For me, it was just everyone else was more interesting and he was just a dude. Then the more runs I did and the more I learned about the dnd verse, the more he grew on me
Always liked him as a friend but was a bit put off by the entire Mystra thing. The romance switch got flipped for me when someone told me a) he would very literally love you even if you were a worm (and they were right), b) Mystra told him to kys, c) and when he started to drop the facade of 'Gale of Waterdeep' and fessed up to the insecurity that runs through him like letters through a stick of rock candy from Blackpool. Its a nice change of pace storywise, in a game, to have someone who is into you from nearly the get go, but whos arc is about then having to option to give support as they work through those issues. Or making him worse, whichever. But after the first three boots to stop him writhing in pain, and just treating him with fundamental respect, he is so on board. Also Im a sucker for nerdy men and slow burn romance arc so yeaaaah....

Fortunately, it’s entirely possible to explore the other romances without leaving Gale single-play as Gale! That way, you get to see the romance arcs for the other companions and Gale still gets love.

I like how this kiss somehow makes even more sense in this scenario compared to if you went to Waterdeep with him. The happy/surprised exhales, the soft smile, how he leans back for a moment.. as if he's lingering on your shared past memories for a moment

But in the ascended Gale ending, he’s lost any assemblance of who he was. He’s condescending, cold, and basically a dick. If you say that the old Gale is gone or anything about being disappointed in him (IIRC), he acts wounded but also condescending (again). He’s not the better version of himself that the other ending presents, imo, even though he is a God in this one. It’s *sad*!

Maybe try romancing Astarion on a Gale Origin playthrough. Gale can’t distract from the romance with Astarion if he’s the one having the romance with Astarion!
I turned into a squid and went to hell for Karlach and Wyll while romancing Astarion but his lines were lackluster considering how he's a little selfish and snarky. He should've said something along the lines of, 'so, neither did you think about yourself and nor of me, hero?', or, 'remember when you promised we'd overcome anything together?'. Because when you sacrifice yourself for the greater good, you also give up on your close ones since it's a thing of mutual interests. Or maybe he's just written shallow like that. Compared to him, cottage ending Shadowheart and professor Gale were more emotional to see me.
In my experience with this game. Gale is the best male romance option. He’s loyal, he’s kind, he has ambitions and genuinely loves the player deeply and would NEVER CHEAT!. Halsin is hot but he’s not husband material like gale. With gale there’s a real future together ♥️

I sympathize for him, but Gale just has way more that interests me as a character. He also seems like hed be a cool fuckin friend.

It's always illusion, as far as I understand. I've never reclassed him from evocation and he's been illusion every time.
