I was doing a tire rotation and oil change. Wife comes into the garage, “why do you keep saying CLICK?” I said, “Wife Unit! How am I supposed to know bolts are properly torqued?!” She said, “Don’t call me Wife Unit” and went back inside. She’s still a keeper.

As a business owner myself the irony that you have two two post lifts and an entire workshop that you pay good money for and you end up working outside on the gravel is not lost on me love the videos keep up the good work
Better doing it that way than pushing that heavy beast
With all the Shit on the back , the Two-Post lift might not have lifted it .

It happens a lot in the mechanic world.

I've a mechanic for 42 years worked at dealers, independent repair shops and have my own shop. And I think your videos are great I've told my workers and my grandsons and everyone to watch your videos they are very educational and I like the way you do things and show how and why. Thank you.
That "brand new" starter that the owner claims they "just installed" didn't look very new at all to me!!!! love your videos, rainman!....keep 'em comin'!

New is a relative term on a vehicle like this with so much character 😳😳😎😎🤣🤣🤣

Or, Powering down … then, makes the power down noise … every time!). Your processes are methodical, I’m sure from years of wrenching. But the comments and noises are purely personal flavor. They are what make you … you. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. Love the videos! PS: If you we’re local, I would definitely trust you with my vehicle repairs.
I do not know about everyone else, but I am grateful for all of the effort you put into these videos!
Agree!! Well done Ray!!
The effort you put into putting these videos together for us is IMMENSELY appreciated. Going across town dog tired in the wee hours trying to find something to finish...that's devotion. Hey Ray, just wanted to say that I’m extremely impressed at how fast you made this new chapter of your life happen. I’m sure it wasn’t as fast for you and your family, but you still pressed in and moved forward.
A little tip on U-Joint, wrap some electrical tape around the joint so that it doesn't fall over on you in tight places. It still allows the joint to swivel, but makes it much easier to get into places like this. A trick I learned removing the upper transmission bolts using 36"' long extensions.
36 foot? Dang that's a long extension. Would give a guy noodle arm quick trying to hold that up! lol 🤣
I use the electrical tape trick all the time!!!
@@brnmcc01 yeah Most of the time it’s 36” worth of half inch extension. But all the beer drinking has conditioned my arms for that exact moment lol
I would have used some anti seize in the bolts as well.

Thank you for driving back to the shop in the middle of the night for us Ray.
Nice to see the amount of dedication it takes to not just do your job but then to put it all on UA-cam. Thought about this myself and I realize the Epic undertaking it can be. Appreciate all your efforts.
Ray congrats on your recent move and new business. We have just put to bed our 7 day business and closed it at end of a seven year lease. We had very little control over costs as it was a franchise format. I really hope you have purchased the building or plans to eventually do so. Keep control of all your actual costs, that way your integrity will be kept intact. Work only a set amount each day, including keeping up with the books and spending quality time with your family. Don't short change the family, They are priority one. Supervise an apprentice or two, do not let your skills and your positive attitude go to waste.
Im getting tired just watching this......truely back breaking work !!! Been there before, done that. We all do appreciate your good hard work. 😅
We appreciate your effort making these videos more than you know Ray. Thanks for the great content, I enjoy your comments while fixing vehicles. Especially the innuendos you sneak in there.
Ohh that start up listen to those timing chains slap. Combined with the scary electrics and a battery that is too small..:no maintenance ever done on this rolling disaster. Excellent stuff Ray. It lives to die another day!

The automotive repair industry needs more honest and reliable mechanics such as yourself Ray. I like to be able to bring my vehicles into a shop and know I am gonna get helped and not screwed. Keep these awesome videos coming!!
I agree with you 100%. I quit working for a shop that was screwing people. I worked the office and did oil changes, tire rotations and a few other small things. Im far from being a master mechanic. More like a shade tree. The owner of the shop was out for nothing but money . He would quote a customer and say they wanted life time warranty parts. Well he would buy the cheap one year parts but charge for the expensive ones. He had a contract with a company that transported disabled and senior citizens. They stayed on top of all the preventative maintenance along with repairs. He would charge them 80 buck for a oil lube and filter package. At the most he would change the filter and top off the washer fluid. I seen him pull some shit. I could not continue to work for someone who was screwing people over. I have lived whats considered in poverty level most of my adult years and know what its like to struggle. I could look these people in the eyes when they came to pick up their cars. His business went under about 2 yrs later. I do have a friend who has his own shop that I met when I sold him parts from the salvage yard I worked at. He is honest, works with people, very good at what he does and even teaches the mechanics class at one of the colleges. He has helped me out in a bind when I get stumped working on my cars.
as a guy who doesnt work on cars, I love your videos
The hand shaking is called subconscious competence. I learned it fast in law enforcement for the defensive aspect of the job so you don’t get hurt. You are perfectly fine! Love the videos as usual!!
Ray I throughly enjoy your channel and content. You bring back a lot of memories growing up when a mechanic went the extra mile for the customer. I had a electrical problem with my car which was problematic. He came out to my work place at 8pm with two books on the electrical he found out that it was a 5 amp connection at the computer. People like you only come along one in a million. You are a very talented person you take your time and explain why you are doing something. You make learning fun.
It is nice to see a pro work the same way as us shade tree mechanics. Laying on our back in the dirt is a place we have all been. You are both informative and fun to watch, I have learned much.
Good to see you in the new shop and doing great work as always man! Gotta replace water pump on my 4Runner this week so that should be fun and prove to me that I am glad I do not do this for a living but guys like you and youtube videos really help me out and I always learn something!

Went through 3 starters on my '71 Cutlass one week because of an exhaust leak. Kept burning 'em up. Of course they died in parking lots. By the time I put the last one in, it took longer to unhook the battery and crawl under the thing than it took to change it out. Thankfully they were all still under warranty.
I think the shaking is muscle fatigue. It happens to the best of us

Thanks for the insight into difficulty of reaching the unseeable/unfindable starter bolt,,,and just how difficult doing filming and editing can be...glad you figured it all out...
Ray, since you asked - I call it the "s" terminal. We run a voltage drop test on the starter motors for new engine installations and measuring the drop in voltage from the key to the s terminal is one of the tests. We call the excited wire a wire that goes to the alternator that energizes the field so the "nator" can do it's nating
"s" for solenoid?
@@boggy7665 yes I think so. Even though we call it a mag switch. So "m" would make more sense. But birg warner calls a different terminal the m terminal. Alot of larger diesel engine starters have that terminal labeled as the s terminal though. Borg Warner, Delco Remy (though they are the same company now). I think prestolite. Look at a diagram for a Delco 50mt, it will have that labeled as the s terminal. I know that is way more information than you asked for... But hey it's the internet where everyone is an expert! Have a good day
Cool Video. I had a F150 Ford which I gave it to my daughter. She had a starter issue. So I helped her replace the starter. The truck was parked for a couple months. But then we put in the new starter, and after that. I was done. And I mentioned to her, she might have to make sure she can hear the fuel pump. After a day went by, she had sent the truck to a junk yard. I told her I wish I was there to help get it started. Dang truck would have lasted her a number of years after that day. she did not try starting very long, just one time and it did not start.
Ya, I agree with the hands. It's when they're shaking and your consciously trying to tell them to stop and they don't, that's a rule I go by. Ive always jiggle my hands to because my brain is making mental note of what where position was the best feel. When I need to be steady I can be steady. Muscle memory is so strong I think we just hone that in over time.

I'm a professional journeyman plumber...yes....I read plans and design waste, water and gas systems for all types of structures ...and do the installs of all 3 including fixtures. I have probably installed a dozen starters in my life...One was just like this (close) in my 2000 V-10 Excursion which had caught on fire when my dad owned it causing the starter to get a little cooked. I cringed as you loosened the last bolt cuz those starters are heavy and will crush your Chiclets (teeth) if yer not careful. Brings back memories....starters used to be easier to get to. I enjoy working with tools...rebuilt a few Baja Bug engines...learned a LOT doing that....Met my wife installing a new clutch in her 79 toyota celica....took me 90 mins....never done one....was easy...she thot I was amazing. Thx for the vid.
Plug GoPro into computer, download files to project folder drive, rename and copy to back up drive, import into editor. Life made less stressful. I was kind of surprised that the ford actually started. Good deal.
One quick tip on that style Ford there is a single wire connector right by the battery that does exactly what you did. All you have to do is touch to positive post. Easiest starter test that I have ever done on any vehicle. Kudos to Ford for that ingenuity anyway.
Appreciate the dedication to put this all together for us. Living out in the sticks, I will lay down a large piece of cardboard when I have to climb under my truck or have to work on the ground. Keep up the grind on this effort. I am happy for you and the rest of Team Ray.
I call that a disposable creeper.
Out in Wyoming we have to do cardboard or a moving blanket on the ground, to lay under the vehicle, because there are little prickly pear cactus plants hidden in the grass! (Hard to remove the spines from areas on your backside that you can't see) 🤣
Had an ex-gf do that in her garage, then she discovered that it was a bad idea to leave big brass staples sticking up out of the cardboard - flat tire
@@lorrainehoffman1307 Anything like sand burrs? Those are nasty, part Kryptonite.
People throw them plastic bed liners away all the time . Pick them up and cut a 4’ X 8’ section out of it , better to lay on than cardboard . Cut with a circular saw . 7/9/23
Lay down a nice big piece of cardboard under there and take a nap. This trick can be deployed while certain family members are visiting.
Ray, don't know if you read the comments. But I have learned so much from you on repairing cars. I own a 2001 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner with the 2.7l 4 cylinder. I onced changed an alternator in my parking spot at an apartment complex. It just happened to be the coldest day of that year. Busted up my knuckles pretty good but I succeeded. I’m 60 now and don’t even change the oil on my vehicles anymore
@rainmanray That model of jump box is only supposed to beep constantly if it detects a reverse polarity condition (cables are connected backwards). It will also show the reverse polarity indicator on the screen which I do see on the video at 7:20. But you are clearly connecting the cables correctly if the colors of the clamps are correct, so that jump box may be defective.
The fact that you'd go to the shop at midnight on Saturday just to get a video out for us is pretty amazing, but between having two young kids, starting your own shop, and putting out a new full length video every day, eventually you're going to get burned out. The dedication to get up in the middle of the night just to find out it was all for nothing! We really appreciate the effort you put in! It was fun to see that whole clip too.
It could have easily been summed up as "i thought i lost the rest of the footage, so i went to the shop at midnight to find that I had the footage the whole time", but we get to see the hard work you put in for ourselves.
I noticed issues like you described when I was in my 20s. The problem has progressed over time and affects both shoulders, neck, throat, arms, and hands. The cause is several collapsed discs in my neck (no trauma or accidents to cause them). Any work I do at (or above) head level becomes extremely uncomfortable after a minute or two from the neck all the way to my hands. I have not yet had to change my line of work but this definitely has made the job a lot harder as the years have gone by. I have to slow down and very deliberately do my work so that I can continue to resist item gravity. I find myself working from the top down rather than the bottom up when possible.
How did my story get into your life?
I'm 66 years old. As I watch this my arms and shoulders and back and forearms are starting to ache. There's a piece of rust in my good eye and I have cramp in my leg.
Anyone relate?
@@porkstack I'm 62 have arthritis in both shoulders haven't had to put a starter in for 12 years I would last about 4 minutes before needing a break.
Love listening to you in the background and watching each repair, learn lots about how best to approach these problems and gives me the confidence to do more myself!
Brings back a LOT of memories....folks need to know WHY mechanics charge for their work .. The stuff is HARD!! One comment and it is along the personal safety line. Noticed you were tightening up the positive post bolts while the negative post was connected.... Was taught and always taught young mechanics to always work on the hot side first with the ground side disconnected THEN connect the ground side. One slip and you can get a face of exploding battery when you ground that hot side by touching that metal wrench against any part of the frame, body or anything metal. Saw it happen once and the mechanic only saved his sight because he had on a pair of glasses that diverted the blast and the flying acid. Safety first..
Because sometimes new starters have a high mortality rate, after working for a short while. I had one screw up after about 5-6months. Drove to breakfast on way to work, thing discharged whilst I ate, cable screaming hot. Got a lift from a bud at werk and a $75 two block tow and new starter install whilst @werk. I was lucky the thing didn't start on fire.
Ray, I would invest in some moving blankets from HF. They are cheap and come in handy for occasions like this one, or for impromptu picnics, beach blankets, and a lot of other things including moving stuff...
Ok I'll be the one to say it.... NO SAFTEY STANDS!? NO GLOVES!? You could have been under that vehicle and if the tire suddenly deflated you'd been a goner. This is YT, never get under a non jacked up vehicle with out a life jacket. Gosh you have so much to learn 😐
If the frame suddenly broke I could have been crushed. There was a lot of weight in the dump bed. 😬

Tygon tubing, (clear tubing to you) 12" pieces different ids. Put one over your hard to reach bolts to use as finger tight extensions. Or you can rotate loosened nuts and bolts. Use it like a sparkplug remover.
We have a fleet of 5.4L F250s at work. Well now half are 6.2L. Had 2 starters fail and each time the braided strap between the solenoid and the main body and crumbled apart. Last one I replaced at a Home Depot parking lot to save the tow. Have had good luck coating starters (entire chassis really) with Cosmoline spray.
You know that starter is pretty fresh with those little rubber drain plugs are still there! We also have a 2001 F250 flatbed kinda like this that just gets used for scrap at an apartment complex. Has 18k miles on it. On its 4th set of tires.
Just watched the end, that looks like a 6.0L diesel coolant reservoir. Not an expert but all of my trucks have the reservoir on top of the radiator. But pretty sure the engine crossmembers are all universal for all engines offered. Say what you want about the 5.4s, but they make adequate power and have been very economical for us.

466k subscribers - on to the next milestone. I think the variety of content in the workshop and back on your property makes for a more rounded picture of what you do. Which is fortunate because you had little choice I guess. More power to you and the family.
Always great to see you work Ray! I was surprised you did not bring an "attitude adjustment tool" with you to rap on the starter in the beginning. Done off camera?
As someone that has removed a "Ferd" starter or 5 I can relate. The last time my son did it for me and replaced the brushes in the motor and it still cranks. A few "love taps" will getcha running in a pinch.

You need to bring back the phone ringing, that's the only thing missing from your new shop! Great choice to go on your own. You are the best!!
The hand shaking could just be a benine tremmer and its actually quite common and a lot of people have it without knowing. Basically the muscles on the top and bottom of your wrist contrast at a different rate and it can be exasperated by getting tired like reaching up and changing a starter. If you put a piece of paper on your hand palm up you'll see it wobbling a little bit on the edges. Some people have it worse then others, I had the same issue since I was a kid and this was my diagnosis after years of tests etc.
We appreciate the effort you go to for the regular updates! A midnight run to retrieve an errant camera... Literally going the extra miles there!
I generally think some people are just worried about everyone's personal health, and they try to help people and be kind. Both my stepdad and dad are mechanics and they do the same thing, just masking it with speed more.

Ray, Are they still makin' cheap aluminum wound starters ? Good copper wound starters are superior.
Nice video and thanks for all the recording and step by step instructions.
I had a VW Rabbit. When the engine got hot the car would die and not start again until it cooled down. 2 independent Mechanics replaced the starter. I went through 3 starters, the original on the car and replacements twice. Last guy even rewired the ignition to another place but left the original in the steering column, I didn't even get a couple miles down the road and it died again, he said, "Well it ran when it left here, so I'm not working on it anymore." Finally, I took it to a dealership, and they found the issue in less than a half hour. 'The heat shield was missing', so when the starter would get hot from the engine, the car would die. So, when the starter cooled down, it would start again. They put a heat shield in and never had that problem again.
if there is one thing I have learned from Rays videos, is I need a cordless ratchet (good one). That looks like your most convenient, time saving tool upgrade (from traditional).
A few years ago I bought an Earthquake electric ratchet. I took it to work at the power station and shaved a ton of time off a valve repair thanks to the wrench. The boss was so impressed that he ordered Milwaukee electric wrenches for us. He liked my electric heated hoodie too, and bought them for us.
Same here been looking at the hercules one from HF. Would love to get the snap on one but kinda pricey for me
I have a basic one. Not sure it saves much if any time per boot, but it saves a lot of effort - and that saved effort means I can keep doing bolts without getting tired abs slow down.
Tip. I noticed someone suggested using electrical tape on your universal but I used heat shrink and the guys love it. Still flexes well and last's longer than the tape. Love your video's by the way.
15 years ago a friend started an ambulance service with a used fleet. Can’t tell you how many repairs I had to make from the gravel. We saved money and time by doing what needed to be done and in a few years had an inside shop which could hold 8 ambulances and two side bays for smaller vehicles. I was wrenching on a unit outside and the new guy asked why I did t bring it inside first. Old habits die hard.
There is only gravel here at the poor farm. A small section of concrete would be a luxury. Rolling a loaded transmission jack in gravel is great fun LOL.
I sometimes find a few love taps with a sturdy wooden stick can temporarily re-alive starters for the purposes of diagnostics, just don't do it in front of the customers as you'll have a hard time convincing them it still needs replacing. I also like to give the old starter a quick jumper test when it's off the vehicle before fitting the new one, but that's a personal preference thing I'm not having a dig, you do good work and I enjoy watching - no complainings from I. Again not a dig, but I've never seen you do bad-earth tests and it has me wondering if crappy earth straps are less of an issue over there? It's personally my favourite thing to diagnose as you confuse the hell out of the customer - "I'm just gonna see if your car has the self-jumping feature" *(attaches single jump cable from battery negative to engine)* "ah yes it does, give me 10 minutes and you'll be good to go" 🤣 As for the 'exciter wire' question I call it the 'signal wire' but then I'm from the UK we give almost everything different names to you guys, was actually rather surprised when I caught you saying "bonnet" instead of "hood" one time 😂 It might have had a dash-swap with a diesel as RPM gauge only runs to 5k which is definitely a diesel thing, I find petrol (or "gas" as you would call them) tend to require more Viva La Revolutions to give the movings, so spin counters usually go higher. As always great work, but then you don't need strangers on the interwebs telling you such things 🤪
Where I live the 10MM wire comes on the solenoid and its about 6 inches long so you have to cut the factory wire and they include a crimp so you can connect the two wires together. It's because to many people were tightening them to much and breaking the solenoid
Hi Ray .. Love the Vids .. Watching you fight with the Universal Joint and socket combination.. Have You tried or looked into "Wobble extension bars".They come in 1/4" 3/8" and Half inch bars . they allow the socket to Wobble but not as much free play as the Universal Joint gives... Hope this helps Andy UK ..
Thank you for your service, Ray. Thanks for the videos, too.
Hi Ray from the UK. Thanks for your videos you make. I'm currently off work due to mental health issues. I look forward every day to your all content keeps me going. Thanks Nige.

See phone misprinted I said from the geniuses I worked with have a great day
I have the same condition as you with regards to the shaking hands, it's not uncommon, it was diagnosed as an essential tremor, its an involuntary rhythmical shaking usually of the hands, its not serious but can be annoying, it becomes more pronounced when you're under stress,I hope this puts you more at ease.
Starter motors 'should' be an easy fix. The emphasis is on the 'should'! LOL! I've changed two on some of my previous cars, but luckily not on a F350. Nice video, Rainman Ray!
Fyi Ray. On the jeep, i know it doesn't matter but the top of the belt run down under water pump. It provides more pressure on idler pully. Check your video. Just thought I'd let you know. Great to see things going so well. Keep'em coming. Have yourself a great day.
3 videos later but you made me look. You are right, he did not put it on the same way it came off.
@@desotosky1372 I'm always rooting for ray.
For your dedication to your craft and steadfast commitment to your subscribers I award you the coveted 👍 and a hearty "attaboy"!
Hey Ray could i suggest that you maybe use your video with a probe attached to it to take a look to see where the bolts are. You often use it to peer into cylinders to assess for piston damage. These work great to also look at areas you can't see with the naked eye. Great video and great job as usual.
Ray the rainy one is working hard for us. He comes clear back to the shop for no reason but to show us his work. What a gladiator for usuns. We may have to hire him to gladiate for usuns.
A Starer issue. I had once a long time ago. It was a re-manufactured starter. Well, after a week bendix was slipping out under load, I took it back & told them, the sales associate took the starter in the back, it was a few minutes, he came back & told me nothing was wrong with it. Sales associate stated that he bench tested it LOL! And I told him, that is not under load cranking a fly wheel is it? LOL! So he gave me another one, but under the condition if this does the same issue he wouldn't exchange it again. After I installed it in my 1969 Ford Mustang, didn't have any issues. Went back with a smile & told him, I told you so. LOL! It a defective stater. If anyone knows about a 1969 Mustang, a child can work on it, that's how simple it is.
Been watching you for a while now.Wish the best for you and your family congratulations venturing out on your own!Your a true professional and awesome troubleshooter.
Unless I'm mistaken, the rate of growth of this channel versus time it has been running predict it could catch and exceed others like Car Wizard in short order. And rightfully so. It's simply excellent and better. Be careful what you work hard for sir, because you're going to have success far beyond what you ever likely imagined.
I like carcwizard when he does buy this not that or actually shows any work. The rest is kind of a waste of time, especially if that hoodie idiot is involved
Used to watch car wizard til i realized we never saw him working on cars, just talk about working on cars...
Same as others, car wizard has so few videos actually working on cars. He talks too much, yes we understand he is a knowledge filled person...its been established. But save that for friday night ask me anything live casts like richard holdener.
Ray makes good videos, has a wide variety of repairs, and he plays the youtube game very well. I can tell he closely follows his UA-cam anylitics. Everything matters, titles of videos, thumbnails of videos, interaction with veiwers, and the time of day he posts the video. Also, probably the most important, he makes a lot of videos! I just looked, Ray has about 100 more videos than car wizard.
It is SO much more fun watching you work than doing it myself! 😎
no joke.!!!!
Other youtubers :never showing there mistakes
Ray : a whole middle of the night episode to look for a go pro and gets distracted 😂
This is why you get our support genuine guy keep up the work
just a few things for everbody. Always disconnect from Negative terminal. It comes off first when disconnecting and goes on last when re-connecting. I noticed you had a wrench on top of the battery. That can be really dangerous.
Good Morning Ray! Glad you were wearing your “bear arms” when you went back to the shop to look for the GO Pro! Love your content! I would probably watch a video of you watching paint dry as long as you had your whitty banter! Keep up the amazing work! You and the Family Unit are Amazing! Here’s to success in your current and future endeavours! Cheers 🍻 ☕️
😂I call it my American Express 😂
(Don’t leave home without it)
Hi Ray,Yes, indeed appreciate the lenghts you go to make your video's, thank you.
One thing i would like to know, what happens to the old starter, surely with a complete dismantling and change what needs to be changed inside with new bits and maybe a new solenoid that starter is good again.
A new starter here (Thailand)for my 17 year old ford 4x4 cost around 260USdollar however after i cleaned it and changed the solenoid it jas costed me 65USdollar, and is as good as new.
Cheers, Reno
Core deposit maybe have a great day p
I used to rebuild starters and alternators but nowadays it's hard to find anybody that sells the rebuild parts have a great day
Initially, you called one of your tools a swivel. I was very concerned that you had forgotten to bring your “wobbly bits” from your previous job. But very relieved that you referred to that tool piece correctly subsequently. 😅
Glad your working for yourself, doing good, I hope to get to your level some day, you gave me the motivation to start my youtube channel. thank you .
Early In my auto fixing "hobby" I was taught to call it a trigger wire but exciter wire works as well..
