I grew up in the 1970's. The pigments on crayons used to be much stronger. It was lovely. By the 80's, it was cheaper to use less pigments and more wax. Very, very upsetting to go from a medium that had the vibrancy of oil pastels, to now a dull candle. Love your videos!
I noticed that too. I grew up in the 60's and remember the beautiful colors. I tried some crayons and found they didn't have the brilliance I remembered.
Yes, I'm being dramatic. I've always wondered how people made crayon art look good. Now I work at a daycare and this is pretty useful information to pass on to the older kids.

Yes, I agree. Textured colouring makes me wanna puke which is why I hated using crayons when I was little. But, in high school I did my final art piece with crayons and it was awesome! I used turpentine on it! I should use crayons more. Thanks for this video.. I may just make a crayon video on my channel too coz you've gone and inspired me!!
I've been sample sheeting and scratching the top wax off of my paper since forever. I guess I was naturally born a crayon *Goddess!* I'd scratch it off with my fingernails though and looking back at that, it gives me the shivers. 😂😂
I'm a guy, and always used my nails too. With pencils I used a tissue to get rid of texture and help with shading. Ahhhh, the good old days before adulting.
If you put a Kleenex around your finger and nail, double it up it works great. Plus what you don't scratch off, you can use the clean part of the Kleenex for texturizing.
Kira Doray Coloring is one of the first creative outlets we receive as children. There are “rules” according to non creatives. Pressing hard was looked down upon in my house. “Do it right or I’m putting them away!” My gramma was a crazy ass creative. I was taught to break crayons into pieces and carve into the side to create purposeful texture and shadow.... it was our secret, which is code for “your mom will kill me if she knew I taught you this.” At home my crayons were perfect, at grammas the had no wrappers, were broken into pieces and some were no longer round. Oh, and they were stored in one of grandpas tobacco tins..... it was the 60’s.
Lol! I used to do the same thing! I scraped it off with my thumb nail then rubbed it enough to warm it up to smudge it. It doesnt clump if you scrape the excess wax off first and dont press too hard.
I'm not an artist but when I do art project for my son's school project I iron the wax crayon picture. It looks like water paint after that and no more waxy surface.
@@cynthiareinhardt4032 Wax paper or turn the page over to the back. I"ve seen some vids that recommend ironing crayoned pictures onto tee shirts by turning the crayoned side touching the cloth & putting a pad of something under the cloth.. Don't know if it works or washes out or gets weird if put in dryer. Might want to dry on a hanger just in case?
When I was on Elementary, me and my friends actually do this with a ruler. We thought scraping crayons is fun until our teacher confiscated our crayons for using it irresponsibly and being messy.
yeah, I used to do this a lot hehe. I still remember once I made a drawing of Ariel under the sea and I colored everything with the crayons/ruler technique 🤣 it was so fast I made the same drawing 3x, since my classmates really liked and wanted a piece too lol I was in 1st or 2nd grade
OMG, I am an old man over 75 & back in the 1950's I used my pencil eraser to enhance all of my drawings. I always got an A on those papers. What I couldn't figure out is why the other kids didn't pick up on it. I got many blue ribbons for my coloring back then. Thanks for the memories.
I spent 36 years with crayons in my elementary classroom so I had to check out your video. Sometimes you have to embrace the waxy-ness, though. There are a lot of very good resist techniques.......
I have always hated the texture of wax crayons since I was kid and preferred to work with the sketch pens. Now I may go and try this method of coloring.
I like this video more than anyone would understand. It explains why I've always hated crayons and "coloring" (though I'm an artist). Its the texture, and yes the wax bothers me too. So glad someone else understands!
Hi, I teach students with special needs. I will use some of this video and show this to them. It will be great for their fine motor skills and crayons are an inexpensive tool that they all have at home. Thanks! They will think you are very cool.
Cryde Golem I’m a special education teacher, my students have disabilities that effect them academically and physically. I’m the same person, I was logged in my school computer. 😊
I got 850 awesome points. When I was in elementary school in the 80s my art teacher taught us a method where you color a design using pressure, then cover that design with a black crayon; again using pressure. You then proceeded to scratch of whatever areas you wished to expose with a penny then used a hairdryer on low to lightly melt the left over built up wax to create cool ass pictures.
My son gave me a box of crayons after he finished his school year over a decade ago; I found them while packing for a move last week. I had never had such a box when I was his age, and I cherish them to this day. Does not mean I use them, I prefer acrylic paint for my medium, but they were not only a gift, but something I'd always wanted and never told anyone. ANYONE. EVER. I'll cherish this box of 64 for the rest of my life for multiple reasons, but probably never use them. Textures have their places, and I enjoy the work of many people who use other mediums! I just find acrylic paints work best with me, or I work best with them, however you want to see it.
Same. Same. That was me as a kid, with the scraping and the hard pressure. I also like to put a piece of paper over it, and iron it. Now, sometimes there is a little bleed, but overall it looks pretty dope.
When I was a kid I actually used to use a sharpener and sharpen my crayons if they got too dull, I got good at being light handed by doing this as well
A major flaw that my traditional art used to have was that I always left the color textured and not properly shaded. It took a huge jump in quality when I started applying shading techniques and pressing the pencil/crayon hard enough to mak the color solid. Wish I started doing this a lot sooner.
Holy crow, this is genius! I also hate that waxy feel of crayons (or oil pastels) and therefore never used them. Even as a kid I was all about those coloured pencils. But this makes me want to try them again because the idea of a giant scratching ticket is just too beautiful to pass up! (Also love that glossy finish.)
Oh my god. I used to do this all the time as a kid, and I always used to think I was crazy because no one else seemed to do it. I just always hated the texture and I liked my drawings to look smooth as hell
I started doing this after seeing this video when it came out and forgot who i learned it from but I just found your channel again and honest to god you inspired me so much im glad i found this again.
I discovered this as a kid and decided that since it stuck strong enough to make a noise, I wanted to see just how strong it was. I don't remember the maximum it could lift, but I do remember it was easily able to lift sticky notes. I think it might've been able to lift note cards?

SwanStar Designs what’s turpentine?
@@gibgabs2899 It's a solvent.. but now that I think about it it was oil pastels I used it with not crayons.
I use turpentine with my colored pencils 😁
@@SNTwistedSeries Yeah it's great to use with pencils.. it works like a paint thinner and makes blending a dream!
I've been sample sheeting and scratching the top wax off of my paper since forever. I guess I was naturally born a crayon *Goddess!*
I'd scratch it off with my fingernails though and looking back at that, it gives me the shivers. 😂😂
Saaaame, it was so satisfying to me and that's why I did it, also I would press so hard on my crayons they would always break
I scratch it off using a ruler ☺
Same
OMG same
@@rossettekylabalunan4241
That's what i do! :D
I started out using my nails... then I discovered that coins did the same thing without making my nails icky... I didnt know other people did this lol
I still use my nails-
I'm a guy, and always used my nails too. With pencils I used a tissue to get rid of texture and help with shading. Ahhhh, the good old days before adulting.
I did that too because I didnt like the little spaces crayon left in the paper
If you put a Kleenex around your finger and nail, double it up it works great. Plus what you don't scratch off, you can use the clean part of the Kleenex for texturizing.
IKR!!!!! I thought this was the only was to color as much as I did it!
I always use to scratch the wax of with my nails. Wish I had thought of the pencil trick.
Me too. She just might be smarter than us. LOL.
Me too. I would never have dreamed of doing this with a pencil because I hated coming across a pencil with no eraser due to overuse as is! Lol
I was just about to comment this. Hahaha
Same
Me too!
I did this growing up and it upset my family and teachers so much so I feel better knowing I’m not alone
How does it upset people
I do it with my nails, and thats why my nails always break
@@joankney8484 ty for sharing I enjoyed
I would do that when I was young, I didn’t know other people did this :000
Me too
Oh ok
I actually tried that when I was a kid, when I used crayons a lot and used to smudge it to look more smoother XD
Lol XD smart :D
same
But smudging it presses it on the paper and makes it look like there's little chunks still (from what little I remember of using crayons)
Lol XD me too honestly kinda mad i didn’t share it with other ppl 😂
Lol! I used to do the same thing! I scraped it off with my thumb nail then rubbed it enough to warm it up to smudge it. It doesnt clump if you scrape the excess wax off first and dont press too hard.
I thought I was tripping when I saw the computer in the back blink
Me too 😂
Same
I didn't even notice that
It’s so cute
It reminds me of BMO! I wonder if that's where the inspiration came from.
Happy to hear I'm not the only one that scrapes the wax off the canvas it's satisfying makes my art look better in my opinion
I'm not an artist but when I do art project for my son's school project I iron the wax crayon picture. It looks like water paint after that and no more waxy surface.
How do you go about that? Do you lay wax paper over the top? How do you make sure you don't get wax all over your iron?
@@cynthiareinhardt4032 You can use newspaper/newsprint! It will absorb the wax.
The real question is: why are you doing your son's homework?
Cynthia Barlow can use wax paper baking paper or normal paper on the other side. Maybe can use a hot air gun or hair dryer. But I haven't tried that.
Finally! Another person with the name Echo! My name is Echo and it gets so annoying when people make fun of it like "Echo, echo..echo..."
Echo sounds like a pretty cool name!
I love the history behind the name echo, greek mythology and all. Very pretty name!
I love the name echo! I have an arabic name and I prefer names that are unique, like yours!

Oh I thought it was a nick name lmao
When I was on Elementary, me and my friends actually do this with a ruler. We thought scraping crayons is fun until our teacher confiscated our crayons for using it irresponsibly and being messy.
@@nauticaslittleworld4152 no
Also, Your* -_-
@@nauticaslittleworld4152 lmao
My teacher is not stupid. Maybe she only said that to lessen the mess
Me too just my teacher never did that
yeah, I used to do this a lot hehe.

Why is it so cute thooo
Great. Now I have to rewatch the whole video which i know is gonna be worth it.
I spent 36 years with crayons in my elementary classroom so I had to check out your video. Sometimes you have to embrace the waxy-ness, though. There are a lot of very good resist techniques.......
First vid I watch of her, could already tell she likes red 😂

Very sassy today... I LOVE IT!!!
I have always hated the texture of wax crayons since I was kid and preferred to work with the sketch pens. Now I may go and try this method of coloring.
I did this earlier this year, it’s amazing! I used your coloring page also
I was really proud of how it looked
"I am a badass with crayons" should be on a shirt.
This has revolutionized the crayon game for me. 🙌🏽
I like this video more than anyone would understand. It explains why I've always hated crayons and "coloring" (though I'm an artist). Its the texture, and yes the wax bothers me too. So glad someone else understands!
This isn't your average everyday coloring. This is

Hi, I teach students with special needs. I will use some of this video and show this to them. It will be great for their fine motor skills and crayons are an inexpensive tool that they all have at home. Thanks! They will think you are very cool.
65musicgurl so what do they need?
@@crydegolem4135 What kind of supplies do they need?
Joanne McWilliams- Foley I was the one asking about what they need that is special.
Cryde Golem I’m a special education teacher, my students have disabilities that effect them academically and physically. I’m the same person, I was logged in my school computer. 😊
65musicgurl ok, but what do they need?
I got 850 awesome points. When I was in elementary school in the 80s my art teacher taught us a method where you color a design using pressure, then cover that design with a black crayon; again using pressure. You then proceeded to scratch of whatever areas you wished to expose with a penny then used a hairdryer on low to lightly melt the left over built up wax to create cool ass pictures.
Am I the only one who thought the laptop was starring into my soul?
@Crella Anore's ONLY girlfriend it blinks a lot ( I believe)
Not until I saw this comment...
I watched this video 3 years ago, I was thinking about it today and now it's recommended to me.
“I don’t Wanna be Reasonable, i Want to Be ama-ZING” 😆👏🏼
Same. Same. That was me as a kid, with the scraping and the hard pressure. I also like to put a piece of paper over it, and iron it. Now, sometimes there is a little bleed, but overall it looks pretty dope.
I have no idea why I just watched this but I don’t regret it. It might come handy one day, maybe perhaps.
Cheers from Mexico City!
When I was a kid I actually used to use a sharpener and sharpen my crayons if they got too dull, I got good at being light handed by doing this as well
I usually do it with my finger nail...I now know as an adult that I could have been using my pencil the whole time...loved the video tho
Louis Baxter
Hahah same I also made it with my nails😂
same i would only use my nails
Jo Lawton there’s a delete button for comments
Same!!!!
Louis Baxter yep me too!
(Also love that glossy finish.)
adult-ing 101
*grabs some crayons*
For me, growing up, the hardest part of coloring was even getting any crayons, much less ones which were intact and went together.
"i don't want to be reasonable i want to be amazing"
I felt that😂
THE SOUND CRAYONS MADE WHEN YOU LIFTED THEM OFF THE PAPER

I discovered this as a kid and decided that since it stuck strong enough to make a noise, I wanted to see just how strong it was. I don't remember the maximum it could lift, but I do remember it was easily able to lift sticky notes. I think it might've been able to lift note cards?
I was a very bored child. lol
*Timp* was the sound i always got
I love the colour coordination of you and the background.... also the technique was cool too.
I’m actually not the only one who hates the texture of crayons so that’s why I use color pencils
MeeEE
Same when I'm in school I always go for colored pencil if I color with crown it bothers me so much
The texture of crayons just bother me 😖
But since they are made from wax too dont you get a wax build up from the pencils too
I love new crayons but I hate old used crayons they feel dirty and nasty to me. I feared the crayon bucket growing up it was so disgusting.
All I could think throughout this vid (this is my first time watching your channel, and I’m a Danganronpa fan) is “Ultimate Artist”
