Dawn you have lost the plot it seems, it’s ridiculous that a non-white actress playing a historical figure, have we suddenly become short on white actors? Kevin was right it’s also a one way street. I’m sure there’s other roles she could do. I’m sick of putting non white people in roles which wouldn’t have been historical true or turning favourite book characters black in totally different settings. Why can’t they leave historical programmes etc alone, and just have non white actors in other films or tv, I obviously have no problem with a film being totally cast with non white actors if the context is right. I would think a film about Martin Luther King, played by a white or Chinese person ridiculous and wrong! Everyone needs to get a grip!
No Dawn you can not have a Black woman playing Anne Boleyn in the same way you can not have a white actor playing Jessie Owens . Why mess with historical facts it makes no sense .
I would like to think that historical dramas teach people especially the young about history so what would this be teaching??How to rewrite history and confuse people.

Way back in the 60s my Mother instructed the teacher that ALL my spelling mistakes were to be marked and when the teacher said they only marked the first three because it was important that children learned to express themselves my mother replied - 'she will express herself AND learn to spell in the process. Your methods will only reinforce bad spelling - do your job properly.' It's not a new thing but parents had far more influence back then.

It may seem like it, but comics are not just there to say anything that will get a reaction. That is not funny, except maybe as fart-humour. Last time she called an actor a plank for saying he was scared by the prospect of sex scenes. That actor was being honest and Dawn ridiculed him for it, which is worse than mean. Both Kevin and Mike confessed they would also find it scary and called her out on her dishonesty.

Hamilton wasn’t really a Puerto Rican actor, but now lots of white (and other) American kids appreciate him more for being played by one. The UK was celebrated for having a black Guinevere in Merlin, etc. I think this is much ado about nothing. No one is lacking for a historical piece featuring a white Anne, and no one doubts Anne was white. Art is about making people feel and discuss things in new ways.
Drama is about the inner life. If you are distracted by something as simple as skin colour I suggest you stick to the children's channels.

I'm Dyslexic, so I have an excuse for not having perfect spelling as I can't control my brain doing typos. However, I do have a pet hate of people not knowing simple rules such as "their" versus "there". That "You are" is "you're" not "your". There does need to be standards around English education. If anything, it is not fair on those learning the language from others countries. How are they going to master the language if they are seeing bad examples?

I generally agree. As a diagnosed Dyslexic I would like to point out that the state education system stops trying to teach you things that you might not get a C grade in. Thus only today at the age of 32 I learnt that Deer the animal is not spelt Dear the greeting.

In my experience, foreigners speak better English than 'Native English' speakers. ie. Brits, Yanks, Aussie etc, because they're taught it properly and need to perform it properly in order to pass the exam.

Dawn (a favourite - and I enjoy the exchanges) would be correct in the assertion that "acting" is "acting" and anyone can play a part in fiction- but in the case of historical representation - it is important visually (especially where dramatic licence has been employed and some factual events changed and some other characters are invented) that known historical figures who were white, are represented as white. Lord, we got into trouble for "black-facing" so let's not repeat the error having white characters played by black. Two wrongs do not make a right.
No excuse to change much loved fictional characters either, the Simpsons argument was a silly one too.

A while back I made the mistake of going to see Richard III at the Globe theatre. Given the circumstances, I was expecting Richard to be like he was: a tricky man made up to look as though he had a hunch-back. After all, we have all seen the role played by Laurence Olivier in the film. Imagine my surprise when 'Richard' was a woman wearing a dirty T-shirt. No hunchback, no Shakesperean costumes, just stupid wokery. We left at the interval and I shall never go to that theatre again. It deserves to go bankrupt.

I was at university in the early seventies. No spellcheckers, and I had a tendency to spell believe as "beleive" (don't know why). Anyhow, I submitted an essay to the professor with about three misspellings of this word. I got the essay back with the only comment being " 'I' before 'E' except after 'C' ". Handing it back he said to me "Sorry about this, and I am sure all your teachers have tried to correct your spelling since primary school, For their sakes, I thought I should give it one more try before you leave the education system."
What I love about these bickering moments is that it is an honest debate with real emotions coming out, no hiding of their irritation, negative emotions being allowed to have a seat at the conversation and amongst individuals who clearly trust one another like a close family member despite their disagreements...

The fact is Dawn, Anne Boleyn was not black she was white and therefore should be played by a white actress in the same way that Louis Armstrong was black and therefore if he was to appear in a play or film he should be played by a black actor.

I don't want to sound racist but we need to draw a line here. James Bond is a modern double agent and no limits regarding the colour of the actor. Whereas if I see Lenny Henry in the part of Henry VIII he makes me think of satire.😊
