  • My Little Italian House 1st Floor Makeover has begun. In this episode, I visit Recuperando Brick and Stone - www.recuperand...
Less than an hour's drive from Fivizzano, Brick and Stone is an incredible treasure trove of wonderful Italian items, and I found the perfect tiles for my first floor.
Then, my interior designer Malcolm picked out an amazing chandelier for the dining room.

Love how you are embracing speaking Italian! As I was watching you I kept thinking, “That would be me!” I’m learning as well and understand pretty much everything but struggle when I go to have a conversation. I think that I just need to get to Italy so I can talk with someone other than myself😭. I love the tiles !

You are so blessed to possess a house in Italy! I live between UK and Italy and my house it's in UK but wish it was in Italy or in Italy as well. For me, Italy it's the most beautiful country in the world. My family and friends are in Florence. Loved that shop you featured! xx

I feel Julie's enthusiasm for previously-loved items! There aren't a lot of reasonably-priced antique places around here (most of them have hoity-toity prices, and since I'm not hoity-toity, I refuse to pay them lol), but quality previously-loved items can still be found. I got a Larousse Gastronomique, my version of which can go for at least $150, for $25. More recently from the thrift store, I got two duvet covers (which normally are quite expensive for some reason): One a beautiful cotton damask, the other a lovely reversible silk with delicate embroidered flowers on one side, and elegant stripes on the other. Both were exactly what I was looking for. Both together were $17!

I explained, I was American living in Germany. My German was passable, but, my Italian was so dreadful! Oh well, what can I say, I'm American, hah! If I get back to Italy, I will be better prepared, for sure!

We were at Recuperando in September. What they have in stock on the lot is overwhelming. Most of it is not priced and what is priced is an extreme markup. Like those stone sinks. Fortunately for us, our sink is original to our house. Our cousin did purchase a beautiful statue there. The name of the game is negotiation. Haggle the price, don’t pay the top dollar. Our cousin got a bargain. I was in search of a fioriera for my Tuscan kitchen window for my culinary herbs. (I did find some amazing bargains on Facebook Marketplace within 50km of Lucca) but nothing matched what I was looking for. Maybe our next visit.

I'd really like to immerse myself in this video, but the background music is drowning out the dialogue. Some of us are slightly hearing impaired and it's quite frustrating having to turn up the volume to hear what you're saying, just to hear even louder music. It is a lovely vlog, but perhaps keep the music for the background when you're not speaking.

    • @francineh.7825

Julie, "Bravissimo!" to you for charging ahead with speaking Italian. A suggestion from a veteran language learner: if you consciously force yourself to stop saying "uh", you'll improve faster and become more fluid more quickly. Saying "uh" actually distracts the speaker from what they are trying to say. Don't be afraid to speak more slowly in order to accomplish this. In any case...io ti rispetto.
