  • In this clip from Episode 1 of Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers, Moyers and Campbell begin their groundbreaking and timeless conversation with an exploration of the classic hero cycle, including consistent and enduring hero patterns in literature and real life. Campbell encourages the audience to view parts of their own lives as heroic journeys.
"We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero path. And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. And where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world." - Joseph Campbell

This is a great interview. I believe the hero is ubiquitous because the hero or heroine is what societies need to succeed. Further, societies don't even need everyone to BE the completed hero - but, they need everyone to STRIVE to be the hero. Life is an endless cycle of hero journeys for each of us, or at least it should be. That is how we grow, and when the individual grows, everyone benefits. For my post-modern dystopian critique, I'll offer up the notion that modern television/movie entertainment has lost the hero narrative, and chosen to go down the road of nihilism, decadence, and ultimate moral relativity with its story lines and scripts. Examples include recent things I've seen on Netflix like "Leave the World Behind" and "Living With Yourself". So many bad story lines and worse endings.

Learn how to swim instead of clinging to other people coming to save you drowning.
That you must realise there is nothing external that you can take or gain from this world, it has nothing to give you.

Each of us will only ever experience reality to the depth of our inner being, the more you understand and know yourself, the more you can understand others.
That what you see in others is a reflection of yourself, you are not seeing any others as they truly exist, only as they exist for you.

Disjointed, hacked up, out of context bits and pieces of Campbell"s message?
The world needs, for example, the full Moyer / Campbell interviews uncut, But this foumdation is instead hacking Campbell's core messages up into tiny little disjointed hacked up bits and pieces. They are doing that as teasers to commercially monetize Campbel's work.
The very nature of Campell's works must remain freely available, intact, in context, and sui- generis on a "giving foot forward" monetization model, which primarily is not the JC Foundation monetization model.
Does this greedy foundation have copyrights on these works?
Why can't anyone post these works up on IE. You Tube etc. free uncut unedited? For instance the full uncut Campbel / Moyers series.
Why is Moyer not acting to counter this outrage?
How to obtain these works intact & unedited now like when Campbell was alive without profiteering? That would be Campbell's will.
The Campbell Foundation, in the guise of proliferating Campbell's body of work, is instead fragmenting it for commercial monetary motives.
    So aggravating!
Seriously any effort to keep Campbell's work free, and free of being hacked up, and free of being exploited by the world system, then count us in.
Metaphorically speaking: God was out for a stroll one day with the devil following along & imitating God. God was carrying something "he" had picked up along the way. The devil runs up and asks. "whatcha got there God?" God replies, "I got the truth." The devil then says," give it to me & I will organize it for you!".
JC Foundation you need to stop "money changing on the temple steps".

I know it's not free and you need a membership but you can watch the entirely on Netflix.
However, there should be teasers and it shouldn't be the full thing on UA-cam. If so people would watch it on UA-cam and think the have the full knowledge of what Mr. Campbell is talking about.
These teasers shou ok d encourage people to read his books and go on the journey.
Reading the books forces y ok I to do your own research just to understand what Campbell is talking about.

    • @rgcwow
      @rgcwow 2 роки тому

      @@s0medebr1s
More people do not subscribe to Netflix than do. I do not. Further why Netflix, and not media like PBS, and the like? Likely because JC Foundation receives commercial profit from Netflix, but not from media like PBS.
You create a false choice by
your reference to Joseph's work quote, "Not free" which implies that JC Foundation's essentially commercial, and manipulative model is the only model to monetize the proliferation of Joseph's work. Not so!
FYI a wisely executed "open giving foot forward" charitable model will generate many times over the ground swell of participants, and money than what JC Foundation's model will generate. We would donate generously to that, & actively participate gratis in proliferation of that model. And with no objection to an attractive income to its leaders.
Your rationalization that open access to whole "chapters" of Joseph's work would mislead seekers into thinking they have already mined out all Joseph has to offer in that "chapter" (full Video) is the exact opposite of how that works. Namely since Joseph's work is a bottomless mine of ever increasing inner riches the more a true seeker discovers the more that seeker will dig deeper & thereby discover even the more.
Your rationalization would be akin to only releasing the bible a verse at a time for fear the truly hungry seeker will read, or watch an audio visual of the entire chapter of the bible, and then lose interest. Whaaaaat?
Many of JC Foundation's snipit clips are likely misunderstood without the context of the entire video ("chapter") that the snipits were snipped from. Essentially that is JC Foundation proliferating misinformation by their often really sloppy editing. I could go on and on about this severely limiting, essentially commercial, profit driven exploitation of Joseph's work by JC Foundation, which is certainly causing Joseph to "roll over in his grave".
Your reply is a superficial miss leading apologist reply for JC Foundation's nonsense. It is at best a rationalized stretch in your attempt to justify JC Foundation's wrong economic model, wrong motives, and wrong strategy for proliferating Joseph's body of work to the world - "money changing on the temple steps".
More details are in my comment that you replied to.
