    Thank you so much for this video. I live abroad with my dog and the veterinary care here is pretty antiquated. I have been giving my dog peas and potatoes for months now and have noticed his energy plummet. When I brought him to the vet they said they didn't know the cause, that it was probably old age or some psychological issue. To top it all off I just bought him a salmon and peas grain-free food thinking that it would help! So glad I found this.

    In the beginning of the grain free diet and heart disease issue I was surprised at how offended owners got when we tried to discuss this with them. We had a lot of owners tell us it’s just veterinary medicine trying to make more money which made absolutely no sense. How does trying to help an owner avoid having to take their dog to a cardiologist increase revenue. It’s not as bad as it was but the degree to which some owners were offended was mind boggling.

      Yes! I was always surprised when clients would take such pride in the specific grain free diet they were feeding. I almost didn't have the "heart" to tell them. And that smirk they'd give you when you offered something better.

      The idea is that vets, like human doctors, get kickbacks in return for recommending specific products. The gifts and perks drug reps are allowed to give doctors (which include everything from free pens and notepads to fancy dinners and paid vacations) have been proven to affect doctors' choice of prescriptions. If doctors are vulnerable to such corruption, what makes vets magically immune?
      Whether or not those kickbacks exist, it's a little concerning when vets act like they're incorruptible by virtue of their profession.

    Interesting. I had my dogs on a grain free diet. The older beagle and older pound hound both developed a cough and decreased energy. The younger beagle had a decrease in energy. I switched them back to a traditional diet, and the older beagle recovered. The pound hound never seemed 100% afterwards (eventually PTS due to renal failure). The younger beagle never seemed to recover, and just seems older than his actual age.
    I am gluten free due to an auto-immune disease. I lost about 20lbs, had decreased energy, and tingling in my fingers. Blood work showed decreased vitamin B. I now take supplements and symptoms went away. My diagnosis was after I had returned the dogs to traditional diet. It made me sick to think that they got sick because of the food I fed them.

    I recognize that correlation doesn't equal causation. In my small sample size of two different breed small dogs, both were on grain free for most of their lives and both have enlarged hearts with one having a murmur.

      Growing up, I had a family dog around the time grain free was becoming super popular so that’s what we fed her. We had her for only a few years before she was put down because of heart failure. She was an older dog and poorly bred, but I personally don’t risk it with grain free dog food until the cause of the rise in dcm is figured out.

    Both of my dogs got malabsorption from eating a food with 15% peas (massive stools, lost weight, silky coats turned soft and fluffy). I wouldnt be surpirsed If peas cause malabsorption of some nutrients dogs need and the heart problems are related to that. The peas also occur in almost all grain free feeds and wet feeds for some reason (live in the EU Area), hard to avoid especially If you have an allergic dog.
    So interested to hear continuation on this.

      This means that sweet potatoes, as a treat, will not harm your dog or cause DCM. Is sweet potato linked to DCM? Researchers analyzed more than 800 compounds in foods that the FDA flagged as being associated with the severe heart disease and found that peas, potatoes, and sweet potatoes were most frequently tied to canine DCM cases.
      causes low taurine 😱

      @@winniepeg2020 wow...this would explain my dog's low energy recently. I always cook peas and chicken, brown rice etc. to go with his dry food. After about 5 months of this I've noticed he's sleeping more and just seems exhausted, even though he's normally very energetic. To make matters worse I just went and bought a whole bag of expensive "grain-free" food with salmon and PEAS as the recipe, thinking I should change to a fancier food because of the energy problem. When I brought him to the vet they had no clue and said it was just old age or psychological issues making him tired.

    It's strange. Many years ago my mother gave her Bassett hound a can food that had peas. That dog would eat all the food except the peas. Those peas were kept beside the bowl, we thought it was a quirk. Maybe there was something wrong with the peas.

    I’m struggling with this in my practice right now. What do you make of the FDA statement last year that they found no evidence of a link? It seems like they’re ignoring evidence, but why would they do that?

    • @DVMCellini
      @DVMCellini  2 роки тому +6

      I think the FDA tends to quickly react to the public then do some research and then backtrack on their initial reaction, a lot.

    What happened to this study? I had a cat that I fed exclusively with the Royal Canin brand and it had a longevity of 17 years, but it died as a result of diabetes. Due to the above, I decided on a new grain-free diet for my kittens, brand ORIJEN, but I was not aware of this alert. Now I'm confused, should I go back to Royal Canin or what has this study concluded? Thanks for sharing 👍

    Is there a way to see if this problem is also "common" in other countries? In my country, I haven't heard anything about it (but food market is terribly under-regulated...). Some friends in Europe haven't heard of it either. Not sure if that can shed light on the problem.

    • @DVMCellini

    I took my baby off of Orijen and onto fresh food due to DCM risk. So it’s not the “grain free” but the problematic ingredients within? So if there is a “grain free” diet without peas, lentils, chicken, turkey, etc? Would that be okay?

    I have fed my small Maltese Carna4 herring, but this does contain legumes. My dog does have allergies w/secondary yeast infection so carbs have to be at a minimum. She does not like raw, fresh, or gently cooked or dehydrated foods. A limited protein of lamb or kangaroo has worked for her tears stains and she is thriving. What can we feed these pups that are prone to tears stains, allergies, yeast, liver shunts, CHF or a grain intolerance. Seems we remedy one condition and have to worry about another

    Apparently Vets think everyone is moronic. Before dog food what do you think pets were eating before dog food existed and do you think wild dog species like wolves, coyotes, foxes etc are eating grain or legume foundation diets.
    My 4 year old fox terrier has never eaten commercial doggie fast food. He eats an animal foundation raw diet of meat, skin, bone, organs, eggs and modest root vegetables like pumpkin and his teeth are perfect, never requires a tooth brush and never had stinky breath. Had no allergy issues is perfect weight and health.
    Anything that can sit on a shelf for perpetuity and not spoil should be a big red flag it pure high heat processed high glycemic garbage

  • @xz3024
    @xz3024 Рік тому

    Honestly, feeding your pet process food all his life is a bad decision, and worse even if you feed him the same brand.
    Imagine feeding a person nothing but the same brand of energy bars for years and expecting a healthy individual….
    Kibble should be a last resort food. Or half the food per day, being the remaining fresh natural food. If that is impossible, at least switch brands frequently.
