its all real, Evelyn in the taxi with Bateman says "your father practically owns the company, you can do whatever you like, silly" had that in mind at the ending. The lawyer covered it up ofcourse.
Patrick Bateman is Patrick Pierce Bateman as in Peirce & Peirce the company... thats why he does no work... and his mum is Bateman "im a child of divorce, give me a break" said by Bateman when arriving late. OR Pierce is his Step-dad
the Lawyer just confused Bateman with the owners previous wifes child, to Patrick Pierce, which is a theme of the movie

It makes sense when he said he “ is trying to fit in” meaning he is trying to fit in with reality but he’s simply not there. I also noticed that the way Jean ( Batemens secretary) was asking Patrick questions and answering them as she was interested in him and genuine. That’s why Patrick was struggling to find the right weapon to kill her with because he was deciding by her response which weapon to use. She seemed to be the only one that cared about him that’s why he didn’t kill her

There is one detail I've never seen anyone talk about this movie: the only person he probably did kill in this movie was the homeless man. Everyone other victim has some ambiguity about their status with either people claiming them to be alive and have just talked to them or the deaths being simply too absurd to believe. Meanwhile Patrick simply stabbed the homeless man multiple times in a dark alley, with a knife, in a fit of desperation and rage. No policeman would investigate that crime, no one will remember the beggar or mention about him to Bateman; a true faceless character in our society.

Therefore if he doesn't know what is actually real, niether do we. We aren't exactly supposed to. The real estate agent old lady explains it why his real crimes are all covered up. If people know there was a murdered case inside that apartment the value will go down significantly and not only for that apartment but the whole building. So she and her company cleaned and covered it up and ask patrick to keep silence to not cause trouble. That was the same case for his murder at the staircase for his apartment building. The others his fake friend and lawyer covered for him because if he was exposed all his inner circle will be in spotflight for all the wrong reason and probably exposes for their other wrong doing. The detectives was obviously trying to tell him this is your alibi at the dinner with patrick and also tells him I know you did it. American psycho wasn't just about him or just him but the whole gang or upper society.

This is the world shown where everyone seems to be a narcissist, so they all turn a blind eye when Bateman, Which happens to be the psychopath of their little group, commits all these crimes. Even the detective when he pulled out the "Huey Lewis" cd is basically telling Bateman he knows he did the murder but basically tells him it's all good , No worries.

I think all of his crimes existed only in his head. In the last scene, his secretary opens his diary and finds violent caricatures of the people he supposedly murdered. Maybe, the whole movie was him drawing sketches in his diary and imagining all the things he wants to do to these people. It gets to a point where he lost track of reality and imagination.
It can also be confirmed by the fact that his lawyer says that Paul Allen is alive because he had dinner with him in London. And the land lady probably found Patrick's behaviour eerie/ strange so asked him to leave.
    And the last thing,
I believe the detective who was after him was a manifestation of his fears self projecting on him. In every scene, the detective seems to be a step ahead of him, confusing him which could be because it was his own second thoughts that made him fear getting caught.

Along with the realtor 's demeanor and the lawyers dismissal of his actions leads me to believe Patrick is protected by his father. Why would someone cover up attrocities from a psychopath that sits and speaks next to you daily? You would always live with the anxiety and fear that one day he could kill you. In my opinion their friends are also some kind of psychopaths and sociopaths. Everyone have his own fetish to kill someone. That represents the business cards that they put on the desk to compare it. They were all the same except some tiny details that refelects their fetishes and characters. In the core they have the same narcistic hedonistic character. Therefore everyone knows the other at its best. Tell my your friends and I will tell you who you are. He says "I'm simply not there.", but there's still a small enough part of him left to express that, and that part wants to empathize with others, to be noticed, and experience meaning, all of which he is denied throughout the movie. That’s the problem with identity. Throughout the movie, you see how Bateman is mistaken for another person. But Bateman may have mutually mistaken the person who mistook him for someone else, and in turn killed the wrong guy. Or, the lawyer could have mistook the identity of the man who died for someone else too. As you can tell even in the lawyers scene, he mistakes Bateman for someone else.

A few things I’ve noticed since watching this theory: the business cards themselves are literally a symbol of identity for each of the businessmen, all competing to stand out in this homogeneous society the video talks about. They all obsess over the smallest of details on the cards which helps them do so. With the idea that this is all in Bateman’s head, you can bring it back to the movie’s opening: he insults the bartender and says he wants to stab her to death. Whilst saying this, it’s all seen by the audience through the mirror - this is a different reflection of reality, how only Bateman sees himself.

I have not read the book, so my experience only comes from the movie. The director says she wanted to make it ambiguous (kinda like in the Sopranos finale), but as she said she didn't deliver completely. My theory is that we simply don't know enough to decide, but the hallucination theory is still more valid. All of the kills happen in a completely surreal setting (the whole movie is kinda surreal tho) and besides the homeless man we have no details about, they are all explained to be not real (even though there is always at least a small doubt they may have actually happened, especially because all the killed people never appear afterwards).
When he kills Paul Allen, the bag leaves a huge trail of blood on the floor and is super heavy, in the moment the guy sees him the trail disappears and the bag appears much lighter, as he is holding a carpet.
The final killing spree is completely unrealistic, and even more unrealistic is the police not catching him in the span of an hour, with that huge trail of evidence. Also it is ironic how that scene feels like a complete murdering orgasm, a CATHARSIS, but it's clear it has not actually happened at all. The ATM speaking to him and him blowing up a police car with a 9mm and surviving a shootout with no cover is clearly a narcissistic hallucination.
There are two possibilities, either Bateman has imagined everything from the beginning, or he has killed but most likely not the people shown in the movie, or at least not in the way the kills are portrayed.
But yes, the point of the movie is that Patrick is batshit insane and nobody notices (or cares?) because they are just as detached and vain as him.

Well, first point that's disproves that is the title.
Secondly Bateman doesn't have emotions for other people (Jean), he is obviously sparing her based on his own narcissistic wants- he isn't showing empathy, he's sparing her for his own gain. It serves his twisted mind more to have her be infatuated by him and have feelings for him as a person with humanity, rather than killing her like the other shallow victims.
He is not showing any emotion through the whole movie- never smiles genuinely, gets sad, has remorse, guilt (other than when he takes a considerably larger dose of his medication at calls his lawyer), the only humor he has is serial killer facts (ie. Ted Bundy's dog scene).
Bateman is the prime example of a psychopath in his mannerisms and traits imo

You can't treat this movie like a 1 on 1 conversation with a patient, you have to review it like a movie first are foremost: camera angles, soundtrack, lighting, characters appearance, dialog, plot, story and so on.

I used to think that the cop car blowing up was too much, but then I realized that Bateman is a pretty good killer. He takes to the gun very easily and it even surprises him. If he were recognized as the psycho he really is, he would definitely get some credit for being so efficient and deadly. So not only is he reaching for being different, he's really good at that different life, but nobody will ever credit him for that...not because it's insane to credit someone for being that good at murder, but because everybody simply doesn't care.

That’s so much cognitive dissonance. Wanting to fit in and stand out at the same time. Also he’s “not the killer he thinks he is” because his narcissism of being the best and being an apex predator merged with his psychosis and gives him a fantasy of him being a more inflated mass murder machine. I would like to believe, as someone who listened to the audiobook, that Pat did do at least some of those murders, and the lawyer at the end mistook the Paul Allen he had dinner with in London for someone else. Just as everyone had been confusing people the entire movie (and even moreso in the book) And the bodies and evidence all get cleaned up because nobody cares and everyone has enough money to erase everything. I agree with what Ellis said about the book not being born to be a movie. The book is insanely long because it bores down on the repetition and the methodical routine and inner monologue of Patrick’s life. The book’s length and pacing are trying to make you feel like you’re going insane with Patrick. Like something’s about to break at any moment.

As soon as I saw the police cars explode on his killing spree, I first assumed "Oh, this is a dream, there will be a scene soon where he wakes up or something". Then when he met with his lawyer, at the end of the conversation his lawyer sternly expresses how he had lunch with Paul Allen recently and seems annoyed that Patrick isn't understanding what he is trying to convey. My assumption is that the lawyer was acting as an alibi, and just wanted Patrick to act like it never happened so that he doesn't incriminate himself. Or maybe he actually thought of it as a joke and Patrick really did hallucinate the scene. I still believe most of the killings before that happened though. Especially with the "cranberry-apple juice" stained sheets.

I read the book years before the movie came out and it made complete sense. I was disappointed with the movie as it left a lot of detail out. If you read the book, there is no ambiguity, and the final scene with the lawyer, saying he saw Paul Allen in London is funny - becasue in the book, that was the rumor Partick started after he killed Paul - he started telling people that Paul went to London. Then, after 6 months, the rumour had gone full circle, and as people do to legitimize themselves, they embellish the story. And that was the irony. Patrick is stunned at how superficial people are, even though he used to be like them. He was now happy he was no longer part of that crowd - he was free. People need to read the book.
