    This isn't exactly symbolism, but when the black male worker starts running it was hinting at the fact that he was Rose's grandfather since her grandfather was an Olympic sprinter who lost to a black sprinter. I think that was really good foreshadowing.

    Two things that break my heart about this movie:
    1) Throughout the movie, Chris continues to say “no, it’s okay, it’s alright, I’m used to it” when faced with racism. Maybe because he doesn’t want to be the angry black man, or because he doesn’t want to upset Rose. This negative view on people who get angry at injustice works to keep them in place, and his attempts to put on a smile keep him in the house.
    2) Rose’s parents ask him about his parents, but they fucking knew he was an orphan, and that’s why they targeted him. He wouldn’t be missed

    • @jubilantsleep
      @jubilantsleep 4 роки тому +327

      Yes to your first point. 100% yes. Every time a black person speaks about our experience in public forum, you can always count on some disgruntled white people who took the blue pill saying "racism doesn't exist," "stop being a victim," etc. Literally every single time. This sadly has convinced a lot of black people to just not speak about it at all, which is exactly what those disgruntled white people want.

      @@josephirizarry5195 I agree, but as the video kind of skirts around, tea is also a symbol of colonialism. Why is "polite" society associated with tea? Because of the British Empire and colonial control of the East. So it's a symbol of genteel society, but also has a much deeper, darker history. She's even drinking it from a china cup that looks ALOT like the classic blue "willow pattern" that became popular in England at the end of the 18th century. That pattern itself was copied from blue-and-white patterns from China, and also ends up emphasizing the idea of wearing another race's "skin" in that the willow pattern is a copy. It's English porcelain pretending to be Chinese. Even if that's not the intended pattern, the pagodas on the teacup in the pivotal hypnosis scene reminds you as you're watching that tea isn't originally British, and that there's a history there of oppression that we ignore. This movie has so many layers. So fucking good.

He described it as the film he never saw being made but wanted so he decided to make it. It was really great seeing it and knowing his insights on everything. Also as a black male who grew up around white people, he really nailed a lot of the social interactions between characters down.

    I'm still at a loss for words on the depth of this movie and my feelings toward it. I guess the best way of putting it is that I love how...deliberate it is. There is nothing extraneous in the movie--it all serves an explicit purpose. From the placement of omegas at the front of the house (barely visible for a quick second at the beginning of the movie) signifying the end of blacks that enter, to the cereal consumption at the end, in which the colored (cereal) had to be separate from the white (milk) and no cereal piece could be eaten whole--it had to be broken, snapped in half first--every image, sound, movement served a purpose that actually ADDED to the main idea. Even the manner in which they flipped traditional jumpscares on their head in the sequence featuring the movements of the maid around the house and the gardener's "Get Out challenge" run, accompanied by very sudden jolts of music, as if they were the impending threat, and the quiet as Chris walks back in the house and is accosted by the mother--signifying that not all true threats come with bells and whistles.
    I could go on about this movie and its symbolism all day, to be honest (the carrying of Chris to the bottom of the house, strapping up, and conversion process and the parallel to slave process and assimilation was insane), but this comment is already far too long 😂 I just really appreciate this film and all the effort out into it.

    It's interesting to add that, intentionally or not, Rose's character reflects on how we see the Southern Belle's archetype versus real life. The Southern Belle is usually a woman is the fish out of the water who knows the horror of slavery and be the progressive one in the white privilege family. But it turns out that in reality, most of the women were just as bad and vicious as their male counterparts who own and abused their slaves. And this personified in Rose in the modern time.

      The reference about deer at the beginning is about Black people, too.
      When Black people were enslaved, they were referred to in deer terminology. Men were “bucks,” women were “does.”
      When Chris’s mother was struck by a car, she bled out on the side of the road and nobody cared to help or noticed her. That’s why Chris stayed behind with the deer. The deer both represents Chris’s mother and the hunting/death/murder of Black people as a whole.

      They did use a house that hearkened back to the white columns of historical slave plantations. The wide, columned, verandah house in this movie is still a housing style in the south. So I was always confused about this being set in the northeast, or within a day's drive anyway of whatever major city they're living in. Because I've never seen that housing style in the northeast. But it's still the predominant style for wealthy homes in the south. Filming outside of Mobile explains how they achieved that. Glad you mentioned this.

      @lelelew2735 7 років тому +35

      yea he definitely showed both in the film.it shows the ones who are most offended and protective could just have those views themselves. like how people say when someone is overly worried about you cheating on them most likely they're cheating themselves ,they throw that guilt onto you so they can feel like a less worse person. some white people get so offended about stuff we could care less about as if they're our "friend" but completly ignore big causes like black lives matter and spit out well all lives matter I don't see color lol.those type of people make me uneasy because they're like roses character sneaky and passive aggressive. atleast when your dealing with blunt racism you know how to deal with it,but how can you deal with someone who's passive aggressive and pretends to be on your side it's like a mind fuck.

    I thought the ending was brilliant. He could have gone for the bleaker alternative and that would also make a good ending. But the fear we feel for Chris when we see the red and blue lights before we know it's Rod is quite enough to convey the message. Making him go to jail would just hammer that down even further. The ending is good because it takes us on a roller coaster of emotions: fear of the cop car, relief for seeing Chris catch a break and laughter at the idea of TSA being badass.

      prncesstrish They want him, want to be him. Many blacks have a swagger that whites and other races usually admire, but there is a thin line between admiration and appropriation. They have more of an "I want it, I will take it" mindset. We are seen as things to benefit off of.
      Ex.
      Miley Cyrus is much like them looking up to blacks. But instead of admiration, she appropriated blacks, and garnered nothing but attention for herself and her gain. She tried to act like stereotypical black women and do "black" things or even speak ghetto like. But now that it has run out of use, she rejects it.

      Siwatu Garrett agree, but that stupid remake was an insult. The old one is basically about how men want women to be robots irl. Which is true often enough that there are wife beaters and rapists. Both want power over women. Wife beaters are huge on brainwashing. And the indoctrination that women are nothing without some man: *ANY* man, is exactly how you pull it off.

    Wonderful job! When I got to the end and saw the cop, my already pounding heart dropped. I thought for sure it was a white cop so I was VERY relieved. This movie is a LOT about mk ultra, or trauma-based mind control, as is the movie Stepford Wives. If you know about it its pretty obvious as all the elements are there (Trauma, disassociation, triggers, programming, mental breakdowns, monarch butterfly...). The fact its not even mentioned in this video shows how little is known about it still.

      Thank you precisely my point. MK ultra and project Monarch are not even spoken of as explanations..when the entire premise of the movie was grounded in those two projects of mind control. Everyone was and is caught up with race in the movie..they missed the main point. They’ve perfected the art of manipulating the conscious individual and programming multiple personalities within them. Destroying the human soul and Image of God.

    I understand when he said he wasn't arrested in the end, but it still bothers me. He still had his hands around her Roses neck, and he touched the gun. just because he got away doesn't really mean anything. Once any police officials find their bodies and check for DNA, It's Chris that they will find. Plus there was witnesses at the party (rich white people) that knew about Chris, and the cop who saw him with Rose in the beginning. Maybe that will come up or not hmm... if there's a part two it would explain that. oh and if Rose died or not. But this movie was amazing, he did a great job!

    At it's core, I like to think that this film was ultimately trying to show the world that there are these glaring issues in the world with race, etc. with the intent to change that. Make this world a better place. But yet still I see so many hateful and racist comments on here. It's so sad. We will never truly move on and grow as a society when still all of these people have this huge ego problem. They were brainwashed at birth to think one way and that's it. This film really was too smart for some of you.

      The visuals were still pretty great though. I also noticed that Peele has a musician's ear when it comes to editing. Notice how deliberate some of his cuts are, and how the flow doesn't just tap every beat in a 4/4 rhythm. Far too many filmmakers these days think they just have to cobble together a few shots in a way that seems rhythmical, but the only way for the audience to actually notice the editing, is by composing it like we compose music: changes, diversity, call-and-response and sometimes even poly rhythms.
      A great example of this is the first hypnosis scene. When Missy says "sink", it's a deliberate rhythmic movement that is hard to explain even in musical terms, but it's a very forward moving little piece of the scene that blends one part into the next. I'm really at a loss for words here, but it gets me in the same way that the intricacies of a great solo does. I'm completely convinced that that particular aspect of film making is more music than cinema, and - without knowing anything about him - I'd wager that Jordan Peele either is, or could easily be a great musician.
