    「恭賀新禧」is widely used in Hong Kong, but almost only used in commercials. Maybe it sounds a little too formal. We probably just say 恭喜發財 and 身體健康 when greeting relatives during the Chinese New Year in HK.

    The compound character on your friend's door is actually a combination of 4 Chinese characters. It does not say Happy New Year but something more substantial:
    招财进宝(in traditional Chinese characters, so actually 招財進寶)
    - Attracting wealth, incoming treasure
    You can actually find each of the 4 (traditional) characters in that one compound "character"!

    The best Pen Chai comes from Hong Kong. It’s actually created by Cantonese. In Cantonese it’s called “Poon Choi” literally means Basin of Food. I have tasted the original one from Hong Kong and it’s usually eaten together family and friends. Compared to the one from Chinese cities, HK is still the no.1 spot to have pen chai.

    I think in north China people traditionally don’t use “gong xi fa cai” to celebrate New Year. I guess it’s because traditionally Northern Chinese are less enthusiastic about doing business than Southern Chinese people.

    • @zeflute4586
      @zeflute4586 3 роки тому +4

      As a nothener I think it's roughly true.
      North people like "阖家团圆,万事如意" (wish u a whole and unified family, and everything goes well with good luck). I guess it has something to do with the constant disturbance from the steppe grassland 🤣 .
