Ya dak sharper the flint is what yyou need man good sharp flint
Ok xnoted my tips are all blunt now
Nice to visit again, thanks for sharing, YAH bless !
Nice to hear from you, brother.Stay safe out there.
I put my thumb on top take a piece of char cloth and tear it in half. Put the two pieces together with the frayed edges toward the edge you are striking. I use cotton wash clothes I get at walmart I buy by the bundle. They make good fuzzy edges to catch a spark.

You might need fresher char cloth. Moisture really affects the ability for the spark to catch. I would also start out with a larger rock too. I know you can do it. Try striking on the corner of the steel,it may shear off larger pieces of steel that last a little longer than the small sparks. It takes time so stay at it. Good luck. 👍👍
Thanks a ton and that's good advice.I had no idea about the charcloth being affected by that. Usually when I throw a ferrod sparks into it.It just lights right up. But I do keep this in my pocket, which is right against my body, so I reckon it probably is damp
How much bigger of a rock do you think would work? I've got one about the size of my fist at the house
@@offthecouch1999I would try a rock that is maybe twice the size of that one you’re using. Also if you’re keeping your cloth in your pocket you really need to keep the moisture out. I would maybe make some new char cloth and try keeping it in a plastic bag and keep it maybe in your shirt pocket. Sparks from a ferro rod are way hotter than the sparks from flint and steel. You’ll get and once you do you’ll wonder why it took so long. Ha ha ha. My wife thought she’d never get it and was ready to give up,now it’s her go to method. 👍👍
@@dthomas5281 Thanks a ton my friend, I will definitely look into this.
I had a buddy once who always lit his isobutane stove with flint and steel.
@@sargevining wow thats really cool.
@@sargevining i reckon it eas common in the 30s ferro rods we just commong out when kephart wrote his book and he had a mixed bag of emotions silmilar to that we all had of grayl just a few years ago
By the way its an honor to see you of all people in my comments section. Thank you a ton for the support and i love your channel btw
I watched you on Shawn Dyer's second discussion on Classic Camping and "Bushcraft". I was impressed on your command of the subjectcand ability to discuss your ideas and impressions clearly.
Did I hear you say you're interested in doing some 1950s Camping? If so, DM me your address, I've got something to send you.
try the file i gave ya and try holding it still and strike the rock on it and throw the sparks into the container of char
Yeah the file works much better. I nwed tk cut it doen smallwr to fit in the csn
Gotta get mean with it sometimes
😅😅 right lol. Love your channel btw
I tried to use a padlock hasp for a couple of years. I had similar results as you. I learned many hasps were plated and/or not the right steel. I switched to a piece of an old file ground smooth. I had immediate great results with char cloth and now use charred punk wood. Try a different type of striker. It might work better.
I've got one from the gather thing that is very similar to what you just said it worked pretty decent, but I just don't have anywhere to store it till i cut it down to fit in my tin. I'll definitely get home tonight and try that. Was gonna spend the weekend out here? But I need to get to work early on monday
Can you actually light a tobacco pipe with a solar ignition flint man thats cool Can you demonstrate ?
@@alexmirzoeff306 yeah definatley.
Ill look for a well lit day and make a video on it
When I do flint and steel I fluff up some jute to hold my char cloth
Hmmmmmm intwresting do you put the cloth in the jute??
@@offthecouch1999 I use the jute to hold the char cloth on the stone that prevents my finger from tearing up the cloth
@offthecouch1999 try holding the steel stationary and strike the flint on the steel
you rock isn't sharp enough, and that steel might not have enough carbon.. I have a firesteel from a Nicholson file from Orion in Australia... that thing throws sparks like crazy.. my only firemaking video on my channel is using that.
Thankd a ton ill.make thw adjustments tonight
