    Lines that ruined characters:
    Spongebob: What a lucky break. Now I have a captive audience!
    Patrick: Spongebob, you can't always expect my usual brand of stupidity. I like to mix it up. Keep ya on your toes.
    Squidward: I don't care, this is sooooo worth it!
    Mr. Krabs: Really? He's a mess!
    Sandy: This is a psychologic test to see how much weird gunk folks'll eat. If it's free.
    Mrs. Puff: Why...are you still....ALIVE!?!

    What kind of friend do you have to be. Where you actually torture you own friend by destroying something very valuable to them they really want. Just to find out you had multiple copies of the item you friend wanted all along. Oh yeah that's right, the kind of friend you have to be is a "Patrick Star."
    In fact, yeah. If you ever have a friend like that. Then they are a "Patrick Star"

    I think The Card could've worked if a gust of wind blew the card out of Spongebob's hand and he goes through the construction sites, Goo Lagoon, etc chasing the card down.

      JemTygir Also, the episode should’ve either
      A. Not damaged the card.
      B. Ended with Patrick or Spongebob buying a NEW pack and getting the card, or maybe even Patrick trying to make Spongebob feel better, but this would make the episode a bit longer or the base plot a bit shorter.

      There’s been at least one episode that has done this better. Waiting. While I still I didn’t care for it, mainly for the lack of plot, it at least kept Spongebob and Patrick in character and knew where to focus the message that it was sending.
      A probably better example is the episode where Spongebob loses his jellyfishing net and Patrick makes him a new one. This a moment to savor because either than getting Spongebob his job or the first Spongebob movie I haven’t seen Patrick do many things that can be called unselfish or helpful. In this case Patrick is his usual old self but he does something genuinely friendly for Spongebob.

      That would work but would still feel like a rehash of Missing Identity, particularly if Patrick was helping SpongeBob find the card. They should’ve went a different route with the episode and made it so SpongeBob was doing black market illegal stuff to rack up enough money or trades in order to get the rare card.

    The biggest issue with The Card is that the writers have no fucking clue how trading cards work. Trading cards (like Pokemon or Yugi Yo) have value for each pack you buy, what that means is that each and every card is worth a certain amount of money when you sell the cards; the rarest the card is, the more value it has. For example, there was a rare Pokemon that was in Japanese and there were only five copies of the card. One day, it showed up online and it costed about $1,000 dollars! That's how trading cards work, somewhat.

    Proof modern Nickelodeon can DESTROY a character.

  • @barraki92reborn
    @barraki92reborn 10 років тому +24

    The problem with a character like Patrick (well, Modern Patrick, as I refer to him now) is that this stupidity can't be dismissed anymore as it was early on in the show's history. He knows fully well what he's doing, how he's doing it, and more importantly, WHY he's doing it. In the older Seasons Patrick's stupidity was very much believable, because he WOULD do stupid things for ACTUALLY stupid reasons; he wouldn't just do stupid things for the sheer knowledge that he was causing problems for everybody else around him.
    Take the Fry Cook Games; Spongebob told him that only Fry Cooks can enter the competition and they get into an argument about the importance of Fry Cooks, which results in Patrick joining Plankton's side as the Chum Bucket's new Fry Cook in order to prove to Spongebob he can be a Fry Cook too; even when he knows virtually nothing about being one and doesn't consider who he's working for. Here, you can at least can get a fair enough understanding of why he's doing what he's doing, but you still know it's a stupid decision backed up by at least SOME fragment of logic that's being superseded by a lack of foresight.
    THIS Patrick on the otherhand has full knowledge that he's being an asshole, knows he's making people's lives harder, but he just expects everyone to "deal with it", and the moment anyone questions him THEY'RE the ones being an "asshole". Now this MIGHT work if you assigned Patrick in the role as the villain of the show, but as a Protagonist this just doesn't mesh well AT ALL. Honestly though between the two of them I actually find Modern Spongebob more frightening. Why? Because at least Patrick KNOWS what morality is, he just doesn't care.
    The reason I find Modern Spongebob scarier is because he has no grasp on what morality is anymore, as evidenced when he said "What for?" in a tone that reassembles a serial killer in Little Yellow Book. There is no right or wrong, good or evil, to Modern Spongebob, there's simply only "him" and everything he does just "is"; whether it's in the right or heinously wrong, that doesn't matter to him-there's only him, and that's all that matters.
    That one line of dialogue honestly reminds me of the line from Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger, where the Stranger says "I can do no wrong, for I know not what wrong is." But want to know what makes this all the more frightening? The Stranger was actually SATAN. So when you have a character act so morality deprived that the only thing I can compare them to is an embodiment of Satan in ANY MEDIA when this is supposed to be a *children's cartoon*, something has gone horribly, *HORRIBLY* wrong.

    MrEnter, when talking about Patrick, lines of dialogue and stupidity on purpose: How would you classify that line of dialogue from "I had an accident" (season 3):
    - Sandy: Don't you have to be stupid somewhere else?
    - Patrick: Not until four.
    I mean: Okay, it doesn't have any impact on the plot, but on the other hand it does go in the direction "I know I'm stupid, but I continue being stupid" or "..., but I mix it up anyway" because it seems even here Patrick is aware of his stupidity. Or did I miss the point in some sort of way? (That line suddenly popped up in my mind, so I was curious of your thoughts)

    • @irishhuskie2585
      @irishhuskie2585 10 років тому +33

      Back at that time in the show, Patrick's stupidity was pretty harmless for the most part. His stupidity wasn't used to cause problems, it was used to make jokes, and some damn funny ones at that. I would say that it doesn't have the same implications as the line in this episode.

    • @sebwan

      rushfan2596 This is also what I think about these lines: It's just funny, and doesn't harm anyone. But I don't know, they suddenly popped out in my head without any warning in that context, thus I was just curious about other opinions :)
      And yes, I really miss the old times when Patrick's stupidity was nothing but funny (counting out "I'm with stupid" for instance as exception). Nowadays Patrick is a danger to the society and it's very painful and anything _but_ funny watching him doing stupid (and in addition almost always dangeous) things. They really made a malicious antagonist out of him.

      Well, if that makes sense to a kid, then it probably makes sense to a stupid person.

      Well, that's true. But, two things. One, that line was funny. This fact may seem trivial, but the line was just meant to be a joke, and since it was funny, we could see that. The "brand" line in this episode isn't, and it just makes you wonder if he actually meant it. Second, and more important, Patrick was being a good friend in that episode by trying to get SpongeBob to get over his fear of the outside. Here? He STILL torments SpongeBob about the card afterwards, making the line seem all the more malicious. At least, that's my view.

  • @elchemistgaming4975

  • @frostyfreezyfreeze54
    @frostyfreezyfreeze54 10 років тому +21

    Yeah, I don't think the line holds much weight in the grander scheme of things. There's no possible way that Patrick's stupidity has been a facade for that long. SpongeBob can't be that dense when it comes to his best friend, he would have figured that out a long time ago.
    Mr. Enter, you should do an Animated Atrocity on "You Don't Know Sponge." They violated Patrick's personality for jokes, which according to you, writers should never do. That episode doesn't make any sense.

    Super Mario Logan recently put out an episode that, in my opinion, did this plot a lot better. It's about Jeffy getting a Pokemon card that Bowser Junior really, really wants, and, like in The Card, Junior keeps begging Jeffy to give him the card, and Jeffy says he'll think about it, while he does a lot of things to the card that could really hurt it. But here's the thing: First of all, Jeffy isn't familiar with Pokemon cards, and he just thinks the card is a "Mr. Froggy" card, and he doesn't want to give it to Junior because he likes the frog on the card. Second, he does what Mr. Enter said stupid characters should do, and damages the card for stupid reasons. For instance, when the card gets bent up, he puts it in the blender because, in his own words: "The blender makes smoothies. Therefore, when I put the card in the blender, it will make the card smooth." It's a solid episode, in my opinion, and is pretty much "The Card" done right.

    I just came up with a theory. The original Patrick had his arm or leg cut off or something and it grew into another starfish. This starfish grew a mind of it's own. It eventually attacked and killed Patrick one day when no one was looking and took over his identity to wreak havoc on the innocent. An evil clone, basically.

  • @kingvideogames
    @kingvideogames 10 років тому +6

    Interesting for analyzing that line, but I would like to offer a rebuttal.
    Notice the precise wording he uses.
    "Spongebob, YOU can't expect my usual brand of stupidity. I like to mix it up. Keep YOU on YOUR toes."
    My theory is that Patrick KNOWS what he's doing, but he only does it because he thinks he is amusing Spongebob. Notice how much friends he hangs around with. You can count them on just more than half a hand. The only ones I can think of that he hangs out with on a daily basis is Squidward, who hates him, Sandy, who isn't that tolerant of him when he's stupid, and Spongebob, who was friends with him since birth and trusts with his life on. Being friends with Spongebob that long, he probably has noticed a couple things that Spongebob liked, and one of them was most likely that Patrick is funny when he does something stupid for a stupid reason. Patrick KNOWS that he's stupid around Spongebob, but since most of the time Spongebob either;
    A) laughs at it,
    or B) doesn't forbid it,
    Patrick doesn't really think that his actions are doing any major harm to anyone. Let me put it like this; if Spongebob has no idea of how morals work, than Patrick has no idea on how CONSEQUENCES work.

  • @jaelie8398
    @jaelie8398 5 років тому +1

    I think a good example of Patrick being stupid done right is Wet Painters when he blew another paint bubble and tried to make the bubbles bigger. He was being blatantly stupid, but it was stupid reasons, kind of a "challenge accepted" when Spongebob said things couldn't get worse

    There's this comic I've drawn, in which Ed, from Ed, Edd n' Eddy, watches the Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian take Chris on a journey through time to help him study for his History test, and when the "Double D Day" scene comes up, he greets Edd to wish him a happy birthday, when it's not Edd's birthday. Now, see, HE had a reason for that. He was watching Family Guy, and it talked about "Double D Day", which he took to mean "it's Double D's birthday" If he had just done that for no reason, it wouldn't have been as funny.

    Idk if anyone else mentioned this, but in a pre movie episode 'I had an accident' a joke was made that Patrick was aware of his stupidity, when Sandy asks him 'don't you have to be stupid somewhere else' and Patrick replies 'not until four,' it's a great joke but I think it works there because it can be argued that Patrick was sarcastically responding to Sandy. If not, it's been established that Patrick knows he is dumb such as in 'big pink loser' and pretty much accepts it. In the post movie episodes, as mr enter has explained, it just seems Patrick is being stupid because he can and it seems that he is doing it out of malice. I think that's what differs between the old writers and the new writers. The classical era writers knew to take Patrick's stupidity and put him in a situation and have him do something that Patrick would do in that kind of predicament. They did not rely on his stupidity as the joke itself whereas this is what the new writers seem to think.

    What bugs me most is that they've made similar jokes, and those jokes actually worked.
    "Is it time already to ruin Squid's day? Don't start without me!"
    -
    "Don't you have to be stupid somewhere else?"
    "Not until four."
    They worked because in those instances, Patrick hadn't done anything that bad.
    I mean, in Nematodes, he says he and Spongebob are going to ruin Squid's day, but Squid spend the whole episode being a royal dick.
    In the Accident, all Patrick did was tell Spongebob to land on his 'other bottom', when Sandy told him that he should try to land butt-first to cushion the impact.

    I don't know how serious that line can be taken. Though Thinking Back this makes many episodes where Patrick torments Spongebob or Squidward just awful.
    Spongebob because he's supposed to be his best friend and yet is cruel to him and Squidward because Patrick is rather aware that Squidward hates him and yet Patrick continues to annoy and anger Squidward because he's bored at least Spongebob's obliviousness is an excuse barring Choir Boys.

    • @nascarfanatic2425
      @nascarfanatic2425 8 років тому

      +The4everreival Yeah. Up until Choir Boys, I was convinced that Squidward disliked/hated Patrick even more than SpongeBob. Then after watching episodes like that and Boating Buddies, I'm not so sure now. If Patrick's stupidity has always been intentional, then it's safe to say that his motivation changed after the movie. It seems like before the movie, he knew he was stupid, but he knew that his stupidity could be found to be funny and charming. There's been also justifications on his stupidity. Nowadays, he's just a straight-up sociopath. I think that line was meant to be a joke by the SpongeBob writers, but when you watch some of the things he's done to Squidward, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Gary, and the townspeople, it's very believable he's doing it intentionally, for no particular reason.

    I guess when you heard Patrick say your catchphrase, you decided that The Card deserves to be number 1 on your list.
    So if a character lives by the code of What I'm doing is wrong, I know it's wrong, but I'm going to do it anyway, they have no right to use the stupid or crazy excuse. A stupid character doesn't know what he/she is doing wrong, a crazy character thinks the wrong thing is right and evil characters know what they're doing is wrong.

    The WORST side of Patrick Star, as he’s CHOOSING to be stupid, as he claimed in one scene. This shows that Patrick is creating chaos and getting SpongeBob worked up just for fun and games, and all because he got his hands on a card SB wanted so badly.
    Sure Patrick had spare card at the end and gave on to SB after he ruined the one, but he could’ve done that first rather than just mess with him just because wants to and can. It’s an unforgivable thing to do to your best friend.

    i am literally begging you to do an admirable animation on "scooby doo on zombie island". it was an amazing movie! the storyline was incredible, the animation was amazingly well done, the soundtrack was AWESOME. (which is actually becoming hard to find in scooby doo these days D:). and lets not forget that plot twist with the cat people at the end! i know you liked the soundtrack because you have used "terror time again" in a lot of your end credits on you reviews. WB took a lot of risks making this movie because it was literally standing on the edge of being too scary for kids. but in the end, they made an amazing scooby doo movie, one of my most personal favorites. it truly deserves a review, and i am surprised that you haven't done a review on it yet. i mean, the music was incredible. like you have said many times before "a good soundtrack song should be one that i want to listen to in general, not just when i'm waiting for the show to start." well, i (and i'm pretty sure about half of the population) are addicted to instant favorites like "terror time again" and "the ghost is here (its a fake)". seriously, you have got to review it.

      He is not sorry for injuring Louis, he even uses her bandages as toilet paper.
      When the state thinks he is a bad parent, Peter does not try to prove them wrong, instead he tries to prove one of his best friends is a worse parent.
      The moral of the episode is "If you behave like an idiot, people will treat you like an idiot!" but I don't think Peter makes the connection.

    Dear Mr. Enter.
    I am nostalgia blind. Please help me.
    To explain my situation, there is a cartoon show I watched in my childhood that goes by the name of 'Spliced'. It shaped my taste in my childhood, and still holds a tight grip on my taste today. I've tried critiquing it, pointing out every flaw, ranting, and yet I still find myself unable to dislike any episode. You have displayed a remarkable skill in breaking nostalgia through legitimate means, perhaps you can break my nostalgia.

    A quick editing criticism! When playing audio from other shows, on another track of audio, it seems to be quieter than your voice audio. I'm not sure what editing software you use, but most that I've used allow for the individual increasing and decreasing of volume for certain clips or tracks. Some even have an equalizer that lets you see the levels or volume overall from all tracks and clips at that given time. You could see the volume drop from the end of your speech part into start of the cartoon part; you could balance out the volume of the clips and your voice so that its consistent and I don't have to turn up the volume to hear it better. That would be copacetic. And increase the quality too. :)
