42:07 i love the image of electro sitting in the audience and slowly getting more and more pissed. he goes outside and just starts blasting away while shouting 'what the hell did i just watch? there's no plot to any of it!'
19:35 Funny enough, in Spider-Man PS4, on the JJJ podcast, he is constantly trying to say that it wasn’t his fault that the experiment made Scorpion crazy, and that the idea was to create a not threatening anti Spider-Man. But it was totally his fault.

adam quenano hell no, 90s Peter was far from being a developed character, dude kept going nuts and history was constantly getting erased, things are far better with Zdarsky or Taylor than it was with most writers in the 90s
Mysterio is honestly one of the more interesting villains in Spider-Man's rogues gallery to me; conceptually, the master of illusion and subterfuge guys are just my favorite archetype. It's too bad he doesn't seem to get many good stories to shine in. I guess like my favorite Batman villain, Riddler, they're just more difficult to write for. The most interesting Mysterio story they've done on Back Issues was a Daredevil book for crying out loud....
@Christopher Zubin I wholeheartedly agree. I’m also glad someone else kinda drew the parallels of Riddler and Mysterio be cool and having so much potential as villains. Also what Daredevil story was Mysterio in again?
@@lexofpower2822 Daredevil: Guardian Devil Like Sal says whenever the Riddler comes up, you need to either, be a genius, or you need enough time to write as one, and neither are common in comics.
@@ChristopherZubin personally if I were doing a Batman story where he fights the Riddler, I would make Batman have to fight his way out of a Saw like escape room scenario. That was an idea for a Batman movie I had a couple years back.
Fun fact, the guy who drew this series is notorious for tracing pornographic images for his characters expressions. Also the series has to take place sometime in the late 80’s because Spider-Man fights at Shea Stadium, and based on how it was drawn it had to have been the late 80’s.
Fun story from my pov: I watched the Back Issues episode of the 90s' Symbiote Spider-Man, then I saw this book at the local game and nerdy stuff shop. First comic book I ever bought. Looking forward to what you say in this episode.
Puzzle talk is singlehandedly my favorite tangent ever thanks guys this video was part of my morning routine appreciate y'all starting my day with laughter that made my family ask if I was okay mentally
I think this story would be placed sometime during August or September of 1984 (though no clue where in the Marvel sliding timeline). The symbiote suit debuted in ASM #252 in May '84, as did Felicia's bad luck powers (PPSSM #90), and Reed Richards determined the suit was a living symbiote trying to bond with Peter in ASM#258 (Nov '84), so it's definitely somewhere in that interval. I say August or September because PPSSM #93 (Aug '84) is where Spidey and Cat argue over her disinterest in his Peter Parker identity and her almost revealing his secret to his landlady by going in and out of the apartment window. I doubt it would be October because visually nothing in this book looks like October in NYC--which again, the sliding timeline kind of makes irrelevant anyway--but it is Greg Land so ya never know haha. Also, it might be a fun little nod if David was pegging the canonical date of Uncle Ben's death to August 10th, the date that Amazing Fantasy #15 was published in 1962. In any event, it definitely takes place before PPSSM #98 (Jan '85), when Jonathan "Johnny" Ohnn becomes Spider-Man's greatest foe, the Spot! :P

This book was a lot better than I expected and was reading it at the same time as I was reading the Alien Costume Saga and he really knew his continuity, still gotta check out the sequel though, but yeah sucks that Land is in this, the colorist is pretty good though and helps me stomach the art
4:28 "Here's a puzzle. Try putting it back together. It's your horse." 20:19 Fun fact: Bluebird _is_ a Spider-Man character that coincidentally also first appeared in a retconned story that took place in Peter's highschool days. She was the alter-ego of one of Peter's friends. He got her killed. It'd've been cool if symbiote Mysterio had white wigglers flowing up from his head, evocative of flames, implying that's where the idea for Ultimate Mysterio originated.
Yes! I've been waiting for a Symbiote Spider-Man issue review. I had no idea what the series was about, having picked it up around the time of Absolute Carnage. Glad to have this information.
I would love to see Kingpin in a symbiote. The only thing better would be Felicia wearing it. Imagine her not being able to be picked up by Spider-Man's spider sense and using its mimic features. Instead of looking like Spider-man I assume it would take on her normal costume, and the white cuffs on her hands or the white fluff around the color would be where the "eyes" are located.
yo, i ain't even halfway thru and the punchlines in this episode are a plenty and hitting like TRAINS 💀 legitimately on track to being my favorite back issues, can't even exaggerate that lol edit: is for a fact my favorite episode took me about 2 hours to watch this hour 15 from the constant rewinding lmao amazing job, y'all 🤞 also my new rap name is "the callous"
I’m not a big fan of J. Michael Straczynski’s Spider-Man but I loved his arc issues when aunt May finally found out Peter’s secret. I think it’s one of the most and much needed significant changes to the Spider-Man mythos. It’s actually my head cannon. Love the chennel. Love the content. Big fan
53:44 it’s definitely done this in the cartoons. Spider-man unlimited Venom gets captured a small piece is blown off spider-man finds it they team up to make sure the bad guys don’t use it for evil and it bonds to him as the suit.
While I don't believe in redrawing other peoples art, it would be pretty cool for Greg Land to come back to and take the time to touch up his more awkward frames. He can genuinely be a good artist when he really takes his time.
Sal- He Zaps him Ethan with obvious disdain- With what? 😅 something about that made him look like he was judging someone through gossip he heard second hand
34:29 Hardrock? And where's his two lackeys, Coco and Joe? Seriously though, I love how this whole episode went off on about five or six tangents, from jigsaw puzzles, to validating Peter's virginity and when he lost it, to debating crappy supervillain names. I love it. XD
3 men in plaid and jeans talk about jigsaw puzzles, why do I love this

"Hey Uncle Ben check out this piece!" 🤣 omg that was too much. 58:31
The amount of math going on in Sal's head deducing Peters first bang, Sherlockian mental palaces fall short
Tons of fantastic conversations in this episode! I especially loved the Ben-i-verse, the opening with Ethan, and the whole "pity sex" convo.
the Cats non sequitur at 41:45 is insanely funny! I've re-watched it 5 times!
To be fair Spiderman 30 years ago is better than he was 5 years ago.
Agreed 100%. I miss the 80’s Spider-Man.
Tony Stark The Spencer, And Zsadarsky are good but the development is gone.

"Hey Uncle Ben, check out this piece".
Weird how they put that story or Symbiote Spider-Man into this episode about puzzles...

Felicia's face at 23:40 is classic Greg Land

I've been watching these to help me fall asleep for years now. Thanks for the new episode.
The first five minutes of this episode are glorious.
The first name that comes to mind for a Venom Mysterio Mash-up is Ven-terio, but that just sounds like an STI.
Damn Aunt May sounds as harsh as my mom in this story

Comicpop consistently puts out content! Very addicting and I am always very excited
47:33 lol I was bummed Sal forgot the puking in helmet scene from earlier. Nice save!
This episode was quintessential back issues ,love it !
I've listened to the Puzzle part so many times now. Comedy gold!
"Hey uncle Ben, check out this piece!" 😭
I also like the idea of Mysterio's plan was just to outright kill Mr. Mistoffelees.
I’ve been sitting on this video waiting for when I had to work late... and alas, that day has come.
These videos are always a blast, can't wait for the next one!
So DC movies came out in the Marvel universe...? Batman is just a media character to Mysterio?? Don't tell Grant Morrison!
Grant Morrion: How deep can I make this rabbit hole go further?
Now I have a New Favourite episode. Great work Everyone
this feels like a story sal enjoyed, which is always a treat!!!
REALLY? Nobody on that couch thought to joke about flipping Hard Rock's name? Where are you at Ben!?
“I was a big deal in the twenties” @comicpop that had me crying at work! 😂
Less than 3 minutes into the episode, and it's already hilarious
I stopped watching Back Issues to come watch Back Issues.

Omg a Back Issues on my birthday? This is the best present ever!!
the puzzle bit was so fucking funny
Watching a random back issues episode during the election because I’m so anxious of the results and this is my comfort show

Ethan, the puzzle expert over here.
thanks for making fun content for this international student away from home during these times
Mysterio: Don't try to eat it.
Kingpin: I don't want it.
53:35 I think this is the explanation of the symbiote being in the MCU, even tho not really explained here I feel like they used this as reference

I am watching this video from the past...so the time of when this happened in Marvel comics....oh no, I have gone cross-eyed.

I think the longest running Broadway show at the time this book is set was A Chorus Line which is basically Cats but about human dancers
