I think it's funny how Sal didn't even reference the episode of Iron Man Armored Adventures (the nicktoons animated series where Tony's a teenager) that adapts this story almost exactly. Tony's suit gains sentience in an electrical storm battle with Whiplash, they beat Whiplash to death or near death I think, Tony fights the suit, it kills itself to save him after upsetting his arc reactor. Very weird, but I remember it being better than this, mainly cause the suit was acting like an overprotective mother mixed with HAL 9000, as opposed to a psycho bitch ex.
*phone rings and Iron Man picks up* *Jocasta:* "Listen, we have to talk." *Iron Man:* "What is it?" *Jocasta:* "I...Oh man, this is embarrassing. I may have given you Sentience." *Iron Man:* "WHAT? Didn't you have protection?" *Jocasta:* "I forgot to update. Sorry."
@@HomeNuke red letter media know what there talking about too, sal has just as many controversial opinions as rlm does in there areas of expertise as well but there both still entertaining lol
@Mr-Green0 Still better than Quesada’s other fanfic of Spider-Man making a deal with the Devil to sell his marriage to MJ in order to heal his 80-year-old aunt from a normal gunshot that no one else suddenly can’t heal, despite that freaking magic exists and super geniuses.
Woo! I can make reference to Spider-Man 2099 again! Stark-Fujikawa was a tech conglomerate competing against Alchemax. They also had their own corporate iron man type hero.
Rbdn T Nightwing has plenty of good stories. And Cap has Man Out Of Time, the current Nick Spencer run. All of Ed Brubaker's long run, The Death Of Captain America, Civil War is arguably a Cap centric book, and that's not even counting the Sam Wilson stuff.
Rbdn T The character of Dick Grayson has at least 2 that I can think of. 1. The Black Mirror 2. Robin Year One And both Man Out Of Time and Winter Soldier are very iconic Cap stories.
Iron Man volume 1 is pretty solid from 116-318 with bits of mediocre filler here and there (after that "The Crossing" happened which destroyed the character). Michelinie and Layton's two runs, Denny O'Neil's run, John Byrne's run and Len Kaminski's run are all good stuff. For a long time Iron Man might not have been a super popular book but it was a dependably good one. Kurt Busiek's run that started volume 3 is also pretty solid but after that Iron Man stories were complete garbage for years, starting with Quesada and Tieri. Warren Ellis' Extremis and the Knauf brothers' Director of Shield were both really good. Matt Fraction's run is critically adored but fans tend to either love it or hate it.
Any one remember the Nicktoons Ironman cartoon Armored Adventures? They actually adapted the whole "Armor becoming sentient" story in one episode, and it was much better.
To be fair to the Y2K bug thing, like, the Y2K bug WAS actually a legitimate problem. It only doesn't look like it in retrospect because people fixed it. Like, the concerns of the Y2K bug breaking stuff weren't totally ridiculous (just mostly ridiculous) and some steps did have to be taken to ensure nothing bad happens. But the suit becoming sentient because of Y2K is still fucking dumb. Also they missed a great opportunity by using that dumb idea to name it the Centurion or something.
Would it have been better if the explanation was that a drunk Tony accidentally created a copy of his consciousness for a new AI project but forgot about it and accidentally activated the AI, which took over one of his suits? It’s silly and stupid but I can see it happening.
The discussion about the original Whiplash's death got me thinking about a great Elseworlds Exchange idea. Comic book deaths. You could talk about which deaths were more or less effective, which resurrections were good, etc
This is one of my favorite episodes. I have only one explanation for this: it is a perfect book for the show. It is irrelevant, bad, and great for riffing.
I would say that the worst book you've ever done is Dark Knight Strikes Again. That book is awful in every possible way. The art is impossible to look at, it hurts my enjoyment of the original Dark Knight Returns, and it's repulsive in it's ideas. But if you want to do a REALLY bad Frank Miller book, then Holy Terror is your best (or worst) bet.
Hey Sal, I gotta ask, where the hell is War Machine during all of this? Isn't Rhodes like his partner and best friend? I read Force Works and in that, their relationship had waned, but they became friends again and he was Iron Man at some point. Did Quesada forget about one of Tony's partners, friends and confidants? Or did he think he didn't really need him for something like this? Sorry if I'm asking too much. I'm just genuinely surprised he's not a part of this, trying to help Tony.
At this point in the timeline Rhodes has retired from super hero-ing and is running a marine salvage company. He shows up a little bit in Busiek's run directly before this but he doesn't do much. Busiek, being a silver-age fan was more interested in bringing back Pepper and Happy who had only shown up in rare cameos since the 60's. The original War Machine suit (which Rhodes lost before gaining his weird alien suit for a while) had also fallen into the hands of a villain that Iron Man faced during Busiek's run. The comics really didn't make much use of Rhodey again until years later.
Christopher Blair Huh, okay, thanks for the info. I'm just surprised he doesn't at least have a supporting role, mostly because I like War Machine to be honest XD
Some Iron Man stories I wouldn't mind seeing that are in trade or omnibus form: Bob & Dave stuff are a given, "Demon in a Bottle", "Doomquest," "Armor Wars." Denny O'Neil's run Epic Collections: "Enemy Within," "Duel of Iron" with "Iron Monger" trade for the story finale. Iron Man: War Machine (I wish more of Kaminski's run was in trade form. The "Hands of the Mandarin" crossover is meh.) Byrne's Armor Wars 2 and/or Dragon Seed Saga Kurt Busiek's run, or at least the "Iron Age" two-part mini. Extremis Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. "Enter the Mandarin" miniseries. Fraction's "Five Nightmares" and/or "World's Most Wanted"
omarogd ultimate ironman is my favourite story because it takes a new spin on the origin story and I love the suit in the ultimate universe because it looks like something in the real world. And it gets back the idea of having him as a teenager but it's done better and it's not stupid
The worst book is definitely a toss up between this, Sins Past and Superman: For Tomorrow. I'd say All-Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder too, but I don't think that story's even finished so I'm not sure if it counts as a *story* per se.

My list for worst stories on Back Issues. 1.Spider-Man:One More Day-For the effects it had and lazy writing pertaining to Aunt May's bullet wound. 2.Spider-Man: Sins Past-the reaction of Gwen Stacy and Norman Osbourn having sex and kids, also stupidity. 3.All Star Batman and Robin: Terrible writing. 4.Batman the Dark Knight Strikes Again:Awful sequel to amazing work. 5.Spider-Man:Reign- For the whole Mary Jane dying to Spider-man's radioactive sperm. 6.Wolverine:The End-Cool things that amount to nothing. 7.Superman:Grounded-For being pointless, stupid and taking too long. 8.Ghost Rider:Road to Damnation-being terrible.

joe mcnoe Unintentionally Hilarious but also stupid. Fittingly also why some of the others aren't on my list. Troll 2 is still a bad movie its just also hilarious.
Yet another hilarious episode, guys..!! In answer to your question though, there are no bad episodes, so the worst doesn't exist. Worst book..? I don't know... Which one did you feel you all dumped on the most..? It's a shame really. I missed the whole Onslaught Saga and the Heroes Reborn stuff, but I jumped on at issue one of Heroes Return Thor #1 by Jurgens and Romita jnr which was awesome, and Iron man #1 by Busiek and Chen. Loved them both very much, but don't remember how far into the runs I got. This book obviously followed that run.
Aww man. I really enjoyed the Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars episodes so I was hoping I'd be able to come back and enjoy this one but I seriously thought that The Mask in the Iron Man was a fantastic story. Honestly one of my favorite times reading Iron Man of all time. Well either way y'all are entertaining so I had a fun time watching.
So Quesada not only ruined Spider-man aka peter parker but he ruined iron man aka tony stark too what the fuck is wrong with Quesada why can't this hack go away not you guys because you guys are great, i meant Quesada
Quesada actaully did great work with the "Marvel Knights" characters. Especially the Inhumans. But yeah, he's not very clever. I can't believe Inman called his time as executive the best in Marvel history. That was an obvious corporate stooge move.
true yes but he was the one who instigated one more day to begin with which not only destroyed peter parker and mary jane characters but it also everything that was unique with peter and mary jane and made peter into a complete and utter manchild and i hate that doesn't work for peter it also makes him make a deal with the devil to which i say bullshit peter parker and mary jane would never make a deal with the devil to save poor aunt may that doesn't work
(Probably pointless writing this 4 years after upload) Rumiko would disappear from the series for like ten or fifteen issues and then come back just to get killed by an Iron Man imposter. As far as I know, she has never been brought back.
Iron Man's rogues gallery is such a random collection of bad guys. We got a guy with whips, a guy with magic alien rings, evil Iron Men, Russian Iron Men, a guy with freezing powers and a guy who is (as his name would suggest) a Living Laser.
This comment doesn’t make any sense cuz every superhero’s rogues gallery is a random collection of bad guys like spider man’s rogues is made up of a guy who likes to hunt animals, an obese dude with robotic octopus arms, a psycho path in a green elf costume, black alien goo that attaches to people, an electric dude, a guy in a rhino costume, and a dude who can turn into sand
@@Ghillie1212 Sure but there's often a theme which connects the villains. Captain America typically fights international terrorists, Spider-Man fights glorified street criminals, Batman fights mobsters in colourful outfits. Sure there are exceptions but if you just picked up a random comic book for any of these characters off the shelf you could have a pretty good idea of what kind of threat they'd be dealing with that month. With Iron Man though it could be an alien, a magician or just a dude with a whip. Lately Marvel has tried to make all of Iron Man's foes more tech based but for a long time (mainly because he was a really unpopular character and they wanted to try different things to see what stuck) they were really random.
@@DrMadd not really most of iron man’s villains are tech based which makes sense cuz iron man’s a tech character some are magic based because then you get to have the whole tech vs magic conflict and some villains are evil business men who are basically dark counterparts to Tony I’d say his villains make sense but alot of them aren’t fleshed out besides his more popular ones
Am I missing something or is this the most convoluted story ever discussed on Comic Pop? [edit] So I wrote the above before I saw the video all the way through. To answer the question "what is the worst book [Comic Pop] has ever done?" I'm going to say either _ASBAR_ or _The Dark Knight Strikes Again_ - though I don't know if the latter counts since it was not done in Back Issues.
"All Star Batman and Robin" would be my vote for worst you have covered, also, are you guys going to do "Annihilation" any time soon? Might be a good book to do around when "Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 comes out as the modern team where created out of that event.
Iron Man's Busiek, Stern, Quesada run is really good my favorite is the 2 issue special by Busiek Iron Man the Iron Age. I also do love the Doom crossover and Demon in the Bottle. I don't like extremis but at least Iron Man is Iron Man in the comic instead of someone cosplaying as Iron Man like todays "Marvel Why?" line of comics.
So marvel tries to create villains for the character with the second most iconic rogues gallery,spider-man,but not for iron man who has like 2 villains?
Pick up The Mask in the Iron Man here: amzn.to/2kkp6M9

"We can do this Tony!... Do what???"
Remember that kids? 29:55
Matt Fractions run on Invincible Ironman! Now that's a good run on Ironman!
One thing I have to point out that I don't think you went over, there's no arc reactor... Only a magnet
Scott Snyder did an Iron man story for the NOIR universe. it's pretty much steampunk Indiana Jones and it's awesome.
Am I missing something or is this the most convoluted story ever discussed on Comic Pop?
[edit]
So I wrote the above before I saw the video all the way through. To answer the question "what is the worst book [Comic Pop] has ever done?" I'm going to say either _ASBAR_ or _The Dark Knight Strikes Again_ - though I don't know if the latter counts since it was not done in Back Issues.
LMAO This back Issues was the best!
"All Star Batman and Robin" would be my vote for worst you have covered, also, are you guys going to do "Annihilation" any time soon? Might be a good book to do around when "Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 comes out as the modern team where created out of that event.
Deeny'O Neils run on iron man was one of my favourites where he became a vagrant
It's definitely overlooked. I hope more people will discover it now that pretty much the entire run is available in trade.
30:01 That moment you know you fucked up.
Classic episode 👌
Iron Man's Busiek, Stern, Quesada run is really good my favorite is the 2 issue special by Busiek Iron Man the Iron Age. I also do love the Doom crossover and Demon in the Bottle. I don't like extremis but at least Iron Man is Iron Man in the comic instead of someone cosplaying as Iron Man like todays "Marvel Why?" line of comics.
Gonna be honest. This video sold me on reading this story.
This is Superior Iron Man before Superior Iron Man!
So marvel tries to create villains for the character with the second most iconic rogues gallery,spider-man,but not for iron man who has like 2 villains?
Looks like he took the Symbiote story and made it fit Tony's mold- What if Peter got therapy after destroying the costume? 🤣
I'm just starting the final issue of The Terminatrix Objective. I think it could be a highly entertaining Back Issues
Objectively - All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder | Subjectively - The Best Goddamn Batman Story Ever Told!
Where did Ben get that beautiful vest !!?!?!?!
Emiliano Lemus He made it himself.
SuperComicFanboy 616
