Yes, please don’t be a statistic if you are told to evacuate. The insurance part is also informative and will be helpful for people who don’t understand it.
Hurricane evacuations the last ten years prior to Ian had become an exercise in futility in SW Florida. Poor lack of planning on the states part led to it. But really just a drop in the bucket to what ails Florida. We got tired of all the government corruption (municipal, county, state), crime, traffic, failing infrastructures, excessive property taxes, property insurance increases, utility increases, medical costs, declining quality of medical care, and more than anything else the overall drop in quality of life in SW Florida. After 23 years sold our canal front house 2 minutes from the gulf for a 750% profit in March 22. Ian trashed it with 7 foot of coastal flooding. New owner lived there less than 6 months and has resorted to suing the insurance company. 825K to 900K worth of damage from three contractors to repair and the carrier claims its less than 300K so thats all there gonna pay. Refused to pay any costs for displacement. Attorney says they have a solid case but may take years to collect a portion of it. So sad that this has been a self inflicted nightmare from the politicians and state legislators. And people still incorrectly blame it on the weather.
