Fun Fact: when Augustin says, "miercoles," it's actually a low-level cuss. It literally means, "Wednesday," but it's a common self-censor to the curse, "Mierda," which means, "shit," so miercoles is like saying shoot or gosh darn it.
Encanto is one of the most refreshing Disney movies I’ve seen in a while with some of the most unorthodox musical numbers in the show. I think the combination of the bouncy dialogue of the songs combine with the imagery perfectly matching the unique problems the characters face make it very unforgettable.
*What I expected:* A story about a girl without powers going on an epic adventure to save her family and prove to the world and herself that she was special all along! *What I got:* A story about a girl deconstructing the generational trauma that has plagued her family for decades all stemming from the moment where her grandmother watched her own husband’s murder while they were fleeing a civil war.
@@Aichi1138 I also like the theory that Mirabel is meant to be the next “Abuela”, and will take her role when she dies and basically be the leader and will guide the next generation of Madrigal’s
I did find the house thing interesting. While the house does interact with others like when Luisa uses a hallway as a treadmill, the house does help Mirabel the most, helping her with her shoes, communicates with her (non-verbally of course), and primarily seems to focus on her. For example, when Mirabel sets the table, the house hands her the plates but when the rest of the family does the same, the house doesn't help and instead seems to focus more with what Mirabel is doing.
I REALLY love how Abuela Alma is not potrayed as the villain and she's not like the evil stepmother. I was worried that was what she was gonna be but I am glad she wasn't. It was very emotional because I honestly hav someone in my life who is kinda like Abuela Alma (not to her extent though) so it really was nice seeing like something that I could relate to and also have a message that isn't just "This person is evil and horrible". Generational trauma is so hard to handle and deconstruct and I am honestly surprised how well Disney handled it.
Mirabel being the black sheep in the family hits so close, enough to be vandalism. When family doesn’t think less of you for not possessing the same talent but you can’t help but feel a little lesser especially when other people keep mentioning that fact, even unintentionally or without malice behind it. And like Luisa, you try to just useful when you can but when you are eldest it’s almost like being another parent and eventually the pressure gets you. That’s why these two are my favorite in the movie right in front of Bruno
This is very true hearing the remarks when do or don't do something over and over. No matter the context gets so old. She is a character that older watcher as myself can like a lot.
_Subversion #4: There's No Villain._ And THIS is the reason I am absolutely DONE with people making Abuela Alma the villain, some irredeemable monster, those people missed the point SO HARD. Look,as latina myself,I can't lie,my family has suffered generational trauma (no to the point of the movie, but it has). My great grandmother basically raised my family on her own. She wasn't perfect, but she was so loving, she believed you by yourself makes you strong... I miss her. Alma it's not a bad guy. She isn't. She's a traumatized woman, she saw her husband being murdered _right in front of her eyes_ while holding her three newborn children,an entire TOWN had to flee their home because of a civil war. *_Alma realized she fucked up._* She realized she hurt her family, she realized the huge amount of weight she put on their shoulders, she realized, and she opened up,and she apologized. Alma. Is. Not. A. Bad. Guy. She's an antagonist, but antagonist isn't a synonym for villain,it never has been. I,personally, found the ending rushed. Yes we can assume many things happened in the amount of time they rebuilt the house (cause houses take time),but it doesn't take away the rushed feeling. I feel like 30 minutes more with Alma and Bruno would've helped a lot, maybe we could've gotten another song even. But overall, the message of the movie is not a bad one. Saying Alma is a villain is wrong, but I see her many mistakes. And thinking Mirabel should've not forgiven her family or turn against them is just extremely out of character for her. it's fine if _you_ as an _individual_ will never forgive your abusive relatives, but it's shown to be MIRABEL'S decision and nobody else's,that's also very valid. In the end,it's a Disney film, happy endings are expected and they're good things. (Btw no offense but I disagree on Tangled's soundtrack being forgettable, that movie is in my top 3 and nothing will change my mind. But great video,I'll be happy if you've read my thoughts even if I'm writing before I finished the video lol)
I think a part of why people feel so strongly about Abuela is that she reminds people of their own abusive relatives, but in their cases they’ll never get apologies and that relative will never change their behavior, so that anger is redirected towards Abuela, a fictional character who that anger can be placed on without long lasting consequences.
I think a big reason why the songs on Encanto worked better than in most recent Disney Movies is that the songwriter (Lin-Manuel Miranda) actually helped with the script (he has a story credit). So he could control when his music would come and how that would advance the plot
I remember being surprised that Rapunzel is not like on poster because on posters she looked like she will beat someone up with her bare hands and talk about how she needs no prince and in movie she was just a nice girl lmao
The reason the songs in Enchanto are so great, is because they were placed in the most important part of the story. Musicals NEED to put the songs in the most emotional part of the story. The idea is that if a character feels so much they talk -> sing -> dance.
This exactly what I told my family after we came out of the theater of this movie, and how impressed I was at it. When plot also moved through it like on the Bruno song specifically is also not something many film musicals do. Not to mention THEY ARE ANIMATED. Animation let's you make it songs more than people doing a flash mob(which is not always bad) but in animation specifically it's nice to see what the characters are singing about. Sorry for writing a paragraph under your comment
The thing I love the most about Encanto is that when the buff sister says she’s weakening she doesn’t say something too dramatic, she doesn’t go “oh, I lifted 10 donkeys but felt like 500!”, she just says they felt heavy, and that’s an amazing way to explain “it’s something I haven’t felt for so long that I can’t explain it in any other way”
I feel like I notice new details every time I watch it, like how Alma throws out the “imperfect” flower from Isabella’s hair after she hears about the 5 kids. This movie didn’t have to put in so many details, but I’m so glad it did
Forgive me for this lateness, but my favorite detail is her portrayal in we don't talk about bruno. When she's first introduced to the song, everyone goes quiet listening to her talk about her perfect life. Later when setting up the table when the scene switches to mirabel assembling bruno's vision isabela's lines change to "i'm fine" and "i'll be fine" and her expression turns to distress, which is drowned out by the rest of the family, perfectly portraying that all others can perceive in her is her perfection and how she suffers in silence.
Bruno was definitely my favorite character in the movie. After everything he’s been put through, 10 years of the family saying: “We don’t talk about Bruno” and making him out to be the villain, he still loves them, even though he could probably hear them from behind the walls. He’s not resentful, he’s not angry, he’s just sad and alone and in desperate need of a hug. He admits that he’s afraid to face his mother, but the moment he thinks Mirabel is in danger he rides out on a horse to confront Abuela, taking the blame for everything. He’s a good Uncle. When he’s reunited with the family, he’s the one apologizing, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong. Bruno’s the best, and I’m never gonna stop talking about him and singing his praises
@@Blockyraps but that's part of the subtext of the movie! He's dealt with so much shit, and been blamed, wrongly, for so many things, that he thinks he's the problem. It's part of the issue I imagine the family continuing to move past post movie. Bruno needs to gain more confidence, but the family, and the village, need to apologize for treating him wrongly, and learned to treat him better. All he does is see the future. He doesn't control it, and they need to apologize to him for thinking that he does control the future, and tried to hurt them. Also, Bruno is just a super selfish guy. The first time he confronts his mom in 10 years is to go defend his niece by taking all the blame for their house collapsing! 10 years, and that's the first thing he tells his mom! He's not able to stand up for himself, but he IS able to do so for his family.
In their past movies, Disney subverting their tropes has been very tongue-in-cheek. A very "oh aren't you SO surprised??" kind of approach, which was funny at first but eventually just got old. I love that it just feels natural now. They don't need to draw attention to the fact that they're not doing the stereotypical "Disney princess" movies anymore, it feels like they're just focusing on making entertaining, unique stories.
I think another thing that really made me love Encanto was how positive it was about growing out of the toxic family dynamic, and how no one was irredeemable. Such positivity towards fixing a broken family dynamic was so uplifting and refreshing for me. Especially when we're in a time where the 'funny, relateable trend' is the borderline glorification of sitting in semi-amused silence at how much you hate your life/family. Also the music is so good! Encanto is the first movie that got me to buy the soundtrack!
If the Executives can keep their hands out of it, forcing Sora to be a background character like he was in frozen There are a *LOT* of great options from the Disney revival age to draw on ...though, Encanto definately deserves to be the flagship "Hallow Bastion" world
This is definitely a movie that gets BETTER and not worse over multiple watches. There's so much detail, so much to catch, so much depth that can be ignored if you're spending the whole time being confused that the plot isn't a big adventure story. The first time I watched it I was like, ok, that was interesting but I don't feel like there's much to talk about. Then I watched it again, and boy am I glad I did! I totally missed how deeply this film touches on trauma and expectations.
Another factor i love about encanto is how they didnt force their voice actors to reach a ridiculously high note in there songs like how others do (i.e. Frozen 2 Into The Unknown) like they really gotta know it's okay to lower the tone of their songs so that their voice actors can comfortably sing it over and over again during recording sessions
Disney originally planned Elsa to be the villain and Let it go has going to be a villain Song, but because the writers loved the song they changed Elsa into a tragic hero and the story was rewritten allover again, but that caused new problems. The reason why Elsa's ice powers are not explained is because the writers thought it be too overcomplicated for the kids to understand. If that's the case then how is changing Elsa from a villain to a hero a good idea again, because so far the story is a mess????
The highest note I noticed was when she said "like you blessed us all those years ago, when you gave us a M I R A C L L L L E" And tbh it kinda threw me out of the song a little bit but that didn't matter anyways cause that's when the song ended
@@sumsum3873 They did a graphic novel but uhhh...it's not great. I think the people who worked on the movie have even said they don't consider it canon
I got say I love how Columbia is represented, it’s great to see different culture represented in Disney movies, but this movie makes Columbia feel like a character itself
The biggest thing I noticed while watching your video is that this video bucks the typical Disney tropes entirely by just... doing its own thing. A lot of the previous movies, Moana, Tangled, Frozen, have made a thing of kicking the typical Disney tropes. The movies will commentate on them, pointedly deconstruct them, and just generally make a show of being self-aware and doing something different. Encanto on the other hand, just... is different. It doesn't feel the need to point out Maribel has no love interest, it doesn't joke about the parents being alive, it doesn't set itself up to look like it's going to do things the classic way just to make a show of doing something else. I really appreciate that here, and it makes the other movies feel like a growing/transitionary period for these Disney films. And now that we're past the point of making fun of the old formula and theatrically breaking it down, we can chill out and just make new movies.
This movie feels so out of place compared to other Disney movies and I love it. I love how much it’s set apart from other films the company has produced. This movie feels real, feels thought out, feels authentic. It’s one of the best Disney movies I’ve seen (next to Tangled because that’s just always been a personal favourite)
It probably feels out of place because it takes BIG inspiration from Latine Magical realism. This genre was pioneered by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was Colombian and an award winning author (He also got a Nobel prize!!)
I watched half of this review and decided now was the time to watch Encanto, So while I started the video knowing very little, I came back to finish the review knowing the full story. My God, its such a good movie.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but the two songs entirely in Spanish are sung by well-known Colombian artists! To the point where my aunt (mind you, we are a Latin-American family but we are not Colombian) recognized the artists immediately within the first line or two of each of the songs. It's a neat bonus!
when i first watched the film, and it got to isabela's song my brain was like "what else can i do >>>>> let it go" like both songs are trying to be a "restrained girl is now free, go wild now" song but really only isa's landed for me. and i think a lot of that is because the entire movie up until that point we actually got to SEE how isabela was pressured into holding back her powers, whereas we were really only TOLD with elsa's. i think another reason WECID was a better executed song was bc of how this moment for isa was shared with her younger sister mirabel. there was more pay-off seeing isabela get flower pollen splattered all over her pretty dress, with her hair getting unkempt, and the biggest smile on her face than there was with elsa's transformation by the end of LIG of being a picture perfect royal head to....a picture perfect barbie doll....
Aw, this movie was pretty good. It was very refreshing for the plot to not have a whole "the world is ending" thing even though the movie should have been more grounded. (Looking at you The Mitchells vs. The machines -- that movie should have been about JUST that family like a father and daughter relationship) anyways, I really liked the movie. It was good.
We are on page with this one. Absolutely love this movie. Felt so human that I didn't believe it was a Disney movie. And I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion Waiting on a Miracle, the I Want song, is my favorite.
One of my least favorite things in any media is when at character is made fun of for having traits that don't typically align with their sex, like women being tall/muscular or (more commonly) men being short or less musculine. In Danganronpa, there's a muscular girl who always gets called a certain name by a certain character, and while it's not treated seriously, I fucking hated it so much. I was so happy that Luisa got to be big and buff without anyone in the movie being weird about it.
@@geo8463 Yep, everytime Hiro called her Ogre it pissed me off. I know she didn't personally take offense to it, but it was so annoying. It doesn't help that he doesn't call anyone else by a weird nickname (to my knowledge), she gets singled out.
When I first watched Encanto with my sister, the whole time I was like “when will they fight?” “Where is the villain?” because that’s what I expected from Disney. I was taken aback when there was no villain or major confrontation. I was near crying most of the movie because the whole time I was like: yeah, that’s family. That’s what family is supposed to be. I live in a very complicated family, with all of us having one or two disabilities and my stepmom having 13 chronic illnesses (none of them lethal or dangerous, the amount is just nerve-wracking) and being a lot of people too. But still, or maybe because of all those struggles, we all have a strong bond like the Madrigals. I truly enjoyed that movie.
Based on the points you enjoyed from Encanto (No Love Interest, Parents Involved in Main Character’s Life, No Villain rather a focus on Character Reflection + Introspection), I think you’d really enjoy Moana!
Bruno's green is actually not to show a villainous side, but rather the fact that, while they had this feud, they're still siblings and he loves his sisters (since, as we know, blue and yellow make green, maybe not those shades of green, but green nonetheless). But that's just the tip of this design based iceberg, because the gifts each one has personifies in their outfits as well as in their personality. You can see barbells surrounding Luisa's skirt, all of these medicinal and health related things on Julieta's apron (medicinal herbs both in and on the skirt pockets and on the bib, hands holding hearts also on the pockets, and a mortar and pestle on the bib), hourglasses and chameleons on Bruno's and Camilo's ruanas (Columbian poncho) respectively, so much more if you pay attention.

I love the details in this movie, and there is always something new to find. For example, I just notice that Augustin put the butterfly tile upside down when they are rebuilding casita (16:01).
"Zootopia was... fine" JUST fine?! You crossed the line! D:< I havent seen the movie yet but that feeling on wanting to see it just for listening to the songs its... quite strong.
Two moments that I feel are underappreciated: When Mirabel yells at Abuela, "The miracle is dying because of you!" , Abuela's face shows that she very suddenly and completely realizes her own folly! She'd been denying the evidence of that so hard, with less and less justification, that her denial just breaks open right then. I mean, she had just interpreted Isabella's liberation right in front of her as a bad thing! There are two examples of that kind of sudden realization in the LOTR books that this reminds me of, but I'll skip that here. And also, at the beginning of Luisa's song, the donkeys, lined up with Mirabel, try to slip away, all together, and Mirablel stops them by saying, "Hey, where 'ya goin'?". The donkeys are underappreciated in general.
“I hate frozen” instant like from me. Please continue to shit on Frozen, in every video, I love it. However, can’t believe you don’t enjoy Pegasus from Hercules. I enjoyed this movie for the folk music in it, though I’m not a fan of ‘We don’t talk about Bruno.’ Idk what it is, but I’m just not a fan of the musical progression in that one. I had a different experience than you. Ever since I started studying storytelling more in depth, stories have become less predictable to me. I kinda guessed the entire plot, but that doesn’t make the movie any lesser in terms of quality. Just made me feel superior to my siblings dumbasses. Heh heh. I really did like that the Yiayia was technically the antagonist of the movie, and the house has so much personality that it’s now one of my favorite characters. It definitely falls into the category of cute animal sidekick
I do love Pegasus, but like... it's not like he's my favorite part or anything. The Castia definitely feels like a much more successful version of the ocean from Moana (which I did end up watching after Rambo found out I hadn't of seen it yet. lol)
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 also havent watched Moana, and have no intention to. It did not really grab my attention aside from the water animation. My siblings love it, but it just feels like another Rock buddy-cop adventure.

I just watched Encanto after your review and I gotta say I loved loved loved it!! The movie touched me in a way movies haven't done for years, so thank you for the recommendation!!
I very much appreciated Mirabel's glasses and the moment you took to praise glasses. I agree that we need more heroes with glasses! I look so weird every time I cosplay because I can't see more that 6 inches in front of my face without those suckers!
Luisa was my favorite character cause I can relate as the oldest of my siblings and doing my best to always help my family and her song was my favorite because (I feel the pressure plus, it’s a BOP). Also I can’t roll my Rs ether😅
I couldn't agree more! Encanto is just such a good and enjoyable movie and it is extremely refreshing after such a long time with other Disney animated films. Like I want to see more side material developed for the film like shorts for each of the family members on D+! The songs and the colors just make it soo good 😌
1:09 "It subverts classic Disney tropes" Actually alot of Disney movies don't have a prince charming or any of those tropes. They try to make every movie different from the last. Pinocchio is very different from Alice in Wonderland. When Walt was alive they only made 3 Princess movies. Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. They Started Churning them out in the Late 80's after The Little Mermaid Came out. Even then there was still variety. Lilo and Stitch is very different from Meet the Robinsons.
I was here frame one! I really enjoyed this movie and I definitely enjoyed how it subverted my expectations in a good way. I was expecting Maribel to have to leave the house to find something to fix the candle, but no. It was all at the house which was interesting to me. Waiting on a Miracle personally hit me hard so it’s my favorite song but I like all of them now.
Finally... Someone who also doesn't like Frozen :D Anyway, I love that you mentioned the 'Prince Charming' trope, because I am so tired of it and when I complain about it I got backlash that I don't like love or something. But love isn't just some dude saving a girl, love can be IN THE FREAKING FAMILY.
I thought you were gonna say “Milo from Atlantis” not Harry Potter XD ever since the JK Rowling stuff I’ve just like not even thought about Harry Potter. But that’s a topic for another day XD I loved this review and I also loved encanto so much! Listen to the spanish version of we don’t talk about Bruno, I can’t speak Spanish but I’m like jamming out to that all the time xx
Why I lost faith in Disney was this weird mentality over the course of 20 years of seeing them continue to purge their own troupes by recycling them and call them 'parody' or 'satire'. Which is why I'd like what they've done with Encanto. Its relatable. Its may not be innovatively 'original' but its not trying to make a mockery of their past works. Not since stories like Monster's Inc have I ever enjoyed a disney movie for so long. Tangled is okay. Moana is good but its pitfalls lingers at the way they handle the 'mockery' session about princesses and animal sidekicks. I don't like Frozen either. This one's just fun with heart, while taking full advantage of its medium as an animated musical movie.
There actually aren't any Disney tropes other than dead parents. Alot of their movies are very different from each other. Lady and the Tramp Isn't the same as Bambi. When Walt was alive there were only 3 princess movies. Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. They started cherning them out in the 90's. I think the Disney Princess brand makes a Mandela effect. It makes people think they followed those tropes more than they actually did.
13:48 Yes! The movie immediately got brownie points for me for that same reason. It's the first Disney movie with a glasses-wearing, female lead (as far as I know. and don't you dare bring up Princess Diaries because they ditched the glasses and only then called her pretty).
I haven't even fully watched Encanto and I'm in love with it. From what I've seen it stands tall with the Disney 2D Renaissance movies, to the point where it feels like it came from that era.
I loved the songs because they actually sound like a conversation for example what else can I do while Isabella is having her realization of herself mirabel is still telling her to give her a hug 😹
okay, I must say maybe you should watch Moana,, It varies away from the most typical cliches of Disney too, minus the self-discovery adventure but since the parents are alive and the dynamic between protagonists is so fun and genuine with no romantic aspects it ends up really enjoyable.
I'll admit when I first watched the movie I was kind of mixed about it. I thought the animation was beautiful but I was watching it on a small screen so the overuse of flowers and NPC extras just walking in the background was overwhelming on my eyes and gave me a headache---then I watched it on a larger screen and really enjoyed the intricacies (the NPCs still bother me though). I was initially underwhelmed by the low stakes ("So like....the big thing they are fighting is....becoming normal people...like literally everyone else in their town...." like even if they said the bad people would come back if they had no magic would have upped the stakes) but upon rewatch I realized that it was more akin to saving the spirit of their family and even though it is admittedly still low stakes I learned to appreciate that. I also couldn't figure out who was who and thought the Family Madrigal just rushed so fast through everyone that I was constantly asking "is that her sister/brother or cousin?" but eventually once I figured out who was who it got better, though I still think it is an issue for kids as it took FOREVER for my nieces to figure it out. Basically first watch was with my nieces who were saying every line so I couldn't hear a lot of it for myself and generally if I'd watched it in theaters I probably would have had a better experience. Like you the movie crept into my mind and I found myself curious to rewatch it and see if I'd missed something on that first viewing (I kept thinking "the stakes HAVE to be higher than this and I misheard Abuela) but honestly I just learned to enjoy it for what it was and found myself delving deeper and deeper into the little nuances and plot points and animations and song theory and now I've watched like a million videos of people breaking down parts of the movie or vocal coaches/musicians reacting and explaining why the songs are so good and now I can say this might be one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.
Encanto had such a big cast, but all of them so unique and had such a good use of time. My only genuine gripe with the movie is how fast paced it was at the end. It didn't feel right and the "fact" it takes about 20 minutes from Isabellas song, to the end... it's too fast of a development.
Yeah, the only big flaw it has i'd say is the pacing - which, with a 99 minute film with a cast of literally 12 main characters, it was kind of inevitable i guess :') (i'm honestly impressed it managed to make every character so endearing in such a short time) which is why i would love a series inspired by it, especially if it goes into the direct events of the movie instead of just being some spin off! It has a lot of potential ^^
Mariano actually is a prince charming, kinda, just dolores. And not from a vilain, with an engagement with her own sister. Who doesnt even want. And its nice that her connection she has to er family and care , is shown, is what makes her special. Why she becomes the next matriarch
Heroes will Glasses, Milo from Atlantis, Chicken Little, Dexter from Dexter's Lab, Sherman from Peabody and Sherman, Lisa Loud, Peter Parker in the original Spiderman.
I freaking love this Movie, sure I missed when Disney made Evil and Heartless Villains,Encanto is the one exception that doesn't need it,the songs, the Story, the Characters, and Message did things right while Frozen,Frozen 2 Ralph breaks the Internet,Raya and the Last Dragon, and all of the Live Action Disney Movies failed to do,I still don't trust Disney but maybe this could be a new start so yeah Encanto is a 10 out of 10,it's a Movie I originally thought it was going to flop thanks to Raya but won me in the End and it's one of the best Movie of 2021.
Gosh this movie is so goddamn stellar I’m so glad you also like it too!! I really love the representation in this movie and how similar it is to my culture (I’m from south east asia:>). The characters are very relatable and feel so real and lively all at once it’s impressive, their character designs are spectacular too!! Ok more on the representation part I see myself in some of the characters (appearance wise besides personality and other stuff) like they have similar skin tones, curly hair , glasses!! And JUst I’m in awe and feel happy that someone who looks like me is on screen (If u wanna know who it’s mostly Mirabel and Luisa from my friends pov). There isn’t much good rep out there but I’m glad Encanto brings so much to the table in many aspects so yea love this video and movie!!!!
I've wrote an essay on this for class. Dolores is the villain of Encanto Dolores is the one who is actually suffering the most with her gift. Imagine having to hear every little thing. And probably most eager to put the end to the gift. Dolores is actively working against the family. She's miserable. And Mirabel is her weapon. Who eaves drops Mirabel and her dad? Bur what if she knew about Bruno before and she is using this scene to justify her actions later. Also Dolores kind of uses Mirabel outside. You know when she talks to Mirabel about Luisa eye twitching. She says to Mirabel 'the only one who is worried about the magic is you'. Kind of gaslighting. Before she hands over info about Luusa. Like she is planting the seed. Also without the candle she gets to get her man. I think she slightly sabotaged Isabela. She was quick to sweep Mariano off his feet. She actually resents Isabela relationship with him. Also in the outdoor eating scene. When Abuela asks about Dolores date. I think she kind of makes up about the baby. But Mariano wouldn't be wanting Dolores babies. Because he is in love with isabela at the time. That's where Isabela gets the flowers in her hair. Also Dolores was the one who exposed Mirabel in the beginning. 'She didn't get one'. That would have given Mirabel more anxiety. And Dolores is the one who starts the chaos with the dinner by starting the chain. In we don't talk about Bruno. In the group verse where everyone is singing all at once. Her line of the song changes. Before it was The man of my dreams Would be out of reach Betrothed to another It's like I hear him now But in the group verse She actually says The man of my dreams Would be out of reachbut betrothed to another And I'm fine And I'm fine And I'm fine You know the line Mirabel uses in her song to tell us she isn't fine. Also Dolores would've heard Bruno within the walls. Also Dolores is probably around Isabela age. So before the other kids came around it would have been just Dolores and Isabela. Also I think Dolores would have spread rumours to Camillo when he was younger. Like stuff about rats on his back. Camillo would have been a kid. And kids get wild imaginations. So that could explain how Camillo thinks of Bruno. Even their names are suspicious Mirabel means wonderous beauty Isabela means God's oath. Luusa is a warriors name Antonio means priceless Camillo is play on the word Chameleon Dolores means pain or sorrow Also in Welcome to Family Madrigal. Mirabek mentions Beauty and the Brawn. But she forgets to mention The Brain. If Isabela is Beauty and Luisa is the Brawn. Who is the Brain?
I already loved this film, but you helped me understand more WHY i love it😅 (also the fact that i don't shit on you because of the way you talked about frozen tells a lot about how much i liked this video)
7:35 this is the exact same thing I noticed when watching the songs on UA-cam, classic Disney movies were always musicals, they put on abstract shows to tell the story along with the music, but if you were to go into those worlds and ask the characters about the time the sang for several hours straight during what was a montage from your perspective, they would have absolutely no idea what you're talking about since most the singing didn't canonically happen, and neither did any of the surreal visuals, it's all metaphorical theatrics. The two key points that make this apparent in Encanto are: Surface Pressure, the whole song is nothing but abstract representations of what Luisa is singing about, and at the end it shows her huffing and puffing, if you were to ask Mirabel what happened she'd tell you that Luisa just poured her heart out in a standard non musical form. Secondly, Isabela's part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno", the townsfolk that were singing previously all scatter to the edge of the "stage" and motion towards Isabela with their hands as she descends, this is the exact thing performers would be doing during a broadway performance.
For me it's the soundtrack. Being a Hamilton fan since like 2015, I can really appreciate the love and attention Lin put in the sound track, and he's definitely had experience with this style of music before. Enchanto and In The Heights may not have similar nationalities (please correct me, I'm probably dumb for not knowing this but I'm not so sure if the characters of Enchanto are also Latino) but In The Heights is something you can hear in Enchanto's soundtrack. Not to mention the touch of the madrigal at the end of We Don't Talk About Bruno (Madrigal is a song that's ment to be sung by a family. And Lin does this by having overlapping involved, much like he did with Non-Stop in Hamilton but that's not a madrigal)[also yes, their last name is the same as the family sung song which is pretty cool] What I'm trying to say is *I'm a Lin Manuel Miranda simp and I also really love this soundtrack*
Come to think of it I did just get caught up in oh pop song with Frozen. I definitely agree with more narative flow with the songs here. Lin Miranda did a great job. Watching encanto on streaming twice in a week did happen for me.
A large part of frozen issues was the over use of its songs I can still remember going on any social media or even on TV and their would be an add or a recommendation of let it go and it just kept going on and on I remember once my niece going over 1 day for a sleepover with Grandma and complaining that all her classmates where singing let it go and not signing a song she wanted to listen to. Frozen became that must watch movie for little girls and one that had 1 catchy song that kids would call in my country's national radio station and ask them to play let it go so kids going to school can listen to the song, even tho kids stopped asking for the song they still kept playing it because it was high on some American list. The local news even had it play on a concert as an end of the days news segment while the credits rolled, it was everywhere and then the second film came and basically was dead outside of the USA because people where sick of the song, I even remember on the radio they announced the second film and a guy litterly went oh my lord not again please tell me your joking.
i gotta say i watched it yesterday and while i agree that it didnt have some of the usual disney tropes, i still was still able to predict the outcome fairly well still, however it was definitely enjoyable for the most part. I think it helps that the movie just kinda flies on by after the family madrigal when the songs start really pushing momentum, and the dynamic of the family in general was a lot of fun to see. But we don't talk about Bruno
Hopefully you'll get the chance to watch Moana because, besides the animal sidekick, Moana also subverts the same tropes as Encanto: no love interest, two alive and loving parents, and no villain (this one is kind of debatable.) Moana and Encanto are both beautiful, subversive movies!
This might be the only Disney movie that I've ever been happy with watching multiple times in 3 months, it has SUCH good re-watchability Also thanks for the "people who wear glasses are awesome" hehe
Well 3 minutes in ive decided. I'm going to watch Encanto tommrow and come back to this video later Edit: i have returned after watching it's really good, made me cry. And the glasses struggle is relatable. #IhaveAstigmatism
Rapunzel's girlboss expression bugs me way more than the others, honestly. I would've expected a bubbly, jump-into-the-fun type of joy on her face, honestly.
Something I noticed and really respected about the film was it's lack of an action climax where the hero confronts the main threat, be it a villain or the manifestation of the problem. Like, we go from the lowest point, to the climax, and finally to the resolution and conclusion. In Encanto, we go from our lowest point (Casita collapsing and the magic disappearing) to the resolution (Alma and Mirabel reconcile and decide to fix the family). It's a very unique way to conclude, but I think it still works because it's still an emotional pay off. Just like a traditional climax, we go from feeling down to feeling uplifted again. It was cool and I'd like to see more films do that.
On the "Disney B*tch Face": I've seen this referred to as "DreamWorks Face" and have since internalized the fact that it's just a best practice for animation studios and their marketing. The number of examples is frightening
Its been so long since I've enjoyed a disney movie (the last one was moana in 2016) and encanto hasn't only become one of my favourite disney movies, but one of my favourite movies of all time
Your favorite three songs are the same i would pick but different lines. "Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under." "And I owe this all to you, what else can you do?" "Seven foot frame, rats along his back, when he calls your name it all fades to black.
Fun Fact: when Augustin says, "miercoles," it's actually a low-level cuss. It literally means, "Wednesday," but it's a common self-censor to the curse, "Mierda," which means, "shit," so miercoles is like saying shoot or gosh darn it.
ooooo that's interesting
Funny thing is she does actually have a power; shes the only memeber of the family that can communicate with the house
@@zom8979 Abuela has the same power
Her real gift is Empathy. The ability to see the cracks in those around her
@@Aichi1138 fair
A lot of Latinos said that this movie was written as a Latino story more rather then Western one
@@delightfulblueberries7405 wdym? Like western in the cowboy way? Bc latin America is definitely part of the western world

some people made alma the villain.
But the family,at least a good of it looked down Mirabel because she was giftless 😅
_Subversion #4: There's No Villain._
And THIS is the reason I am absolutely DONE with people making Abuela Alma the villain, some irredeemable monster, those people missed the point SO HARD.
*_Alma realized she fucked up._*
She realized she hurt her family, she realized the huge amount of weight she put on their shoulders, she realized, and she opened up,and she apologized. Alma. Is. Not. A. Bad. Guy.
She's an antagonist,but antagonist isn't a synonym for villain,it never has been.
There wasn't really a villain in Bambi.
I think a part of why people feel so strongly about Abuela is that she reminds people of their own abusive relatives, but in their cases they’ll never get apologies and that relative will never change their behavior, so that anger is redirected towards Abuela, a fictional character who that anger can be placed on without long lasting consequences.
There… there was a soundtrack in Tangled?
They likelyget a series, where they can talk that all out, especially with bruno
@@damiankaleomontero496 It was composed by Alan Menkin, but it might be one of his weaker works.
The thing I love the most about Encanto is that when the buff sister says she’s weakening she doesn’t say something too dramatic, she doesn’t go “oh, I lifted 10 donkeys but felt like 500!”, she just says they felt heavy, and that’s an amazing way to explain “it’s something I haven’t felt for so long that I can’t explain it in any other way”
Also fun fact: Isabellas dress (after her song) is also the colours of Colombia's flag
@@aine5762 no need to apologize, but yeah, it shows how much it can hurt to have to force a smile for the sake of others
THATS the only problem I have with the movie. That Bruno has all this lonliness built up to the boiling point and HES the one apologizing
I don't remember Bruno being scared of Abuela tho? She still loves her son and misses him
@@Blockyraps but that's part of the subtext of the movie!

@@passmethesaltplease4175 mirabel said in one scene "youre afraid abuela would see you" and bruno said "yeah i mean yeah that too"
In their past movies, Disney subverting their tropes has been very tongue-in-cheek.
You failed to mention the best and most savage line in the movie: "Maybe your gift is being in denial". Not even Julietta's food can cure that burn
If Nomura doesn't put an Encanto world in Kingdom Hearts, that will be the tragedy of the century
If the Executives can keep their hands out of it, forcing Sora to be a background character like he was in frozen
There are a *LOT* of great options from the Disney revival age to draw on
...though, Encanto definately deserves to be the flagship "Hallow Bastion" world
It would be amazing!
…Sora touches the candle and gets a room for the world and Mirabel is not-so-subtly absolutely pissed off about it
Can't believe Sora is going to Colombia
@@GayAndDog damn, he almost went to brazil

The highest note I noticed was when she said "like you blessed us all those years ago, when you gave us a M I R A C L L L L E" And tbh it kinda threw me out of the song a little bit but that didn't matter anyways cause that's when the song ended

I feel represented and I'm Puerto Rican
Felix and Augustine are THE BEST DISNEY MEN!!! Not one ounce of toxic masculinity in the whole movie!

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but the two songs entirely in Spanish are sung by well-known Colombian artists! To the point where my aunt (mind you, we are a Latin-American family but we are not Colombian) recognized the artists immediately within the first line or two of each of the songs. It's a neat bonus!
when i first watched the film, and it got to isabela's song my brain was like "what else can i do >>>>> let it go"
like both songs are trying to be a "restrained girl is now free, go wild now" song but really only isa's landed for me. and i think a lot of that is because the entire movie up until that point we actually got to SEE how isabela was pressured into holding back her powers, whereas we were really only TOLD with elsa's. i think another reason WECID was a better executed song was bc of how this moment for isa was shared with her younger sister mirabel. there was more pay-off seeing isabela get flower pollen splattered all over her pretty dress, with her hair getting unkempt, and the biggest smile on her face than there was with elsa's transformation by the end of LIG of being a picture perfect royal head to....a picture perfect barbie doll....

"Zootopia was... fine" JUST fine?! You crossed the line! D:<
I havent seen the movie yet but that feeling on wanting to see it just for listening to the songs its... quite strong.
Two moments that I feel are underappreciated:
When Mirabel yells at Abuela, "The miracle is dying because of you!" , Abuela's face shows that she very suddenly and completely realizes her own folly!

I don't like this movie as much as most people but it's enjoyable and the soundtrack slaps
But that’s a topic for another day XD
I loved this review and I also loved encanto so much!
In Moana that was like one line.
Great video as always! Just one thing.... The Family Madrigal is my second favourite song, how could you tear my heart out like that!
The closest i can get to rolling r's is gurgling like Chewbacca
"Yes, Chewie, don't worry. We will be home for Lifeday."
I loved the songs because they actually sound like a conversation for example what else can I do while Isabella is having her realization of herself mirabel is still telling her to give her a hug 😹
Cracking up at how you called Kristoff Sven 💀💀😭, shows how forgettable he was.
okay, I must say maybe you should watch Moana,,
It varies away from the most typical cliches of Disney too, minus the self-discovery adventure
but since the parents are alive and the dynamic between protagonists is so fun and genuine with no romantic aspects it ends up really enjoyable.
Imma sum up your whole video:
The emotions in this movie cut deeper than the machete in Pedro's shoulder
😭😭
I like the upbeat Spanish song a ton. It’s a bop. Also thanks for making these videos they’re awesome.
I love how kids wanted Luisa merch more than the Isabela merch.
I've wrote an essay on this for class.
Dolores is the villain of Encanto
Dolores is the one who is actually suffering the most with her gift.
Before it was
The man of my dreams
Would be out of reach
Betrothed to another
It's like I hear him now
But in the group verse
She actually says
The man of my dreams Would be out of reachbut betrothed to another
And I'm fine
And I'm fine
And I'm fine
You know the line Mirabel uses in her song to tell us she isn't fine.
Even their names are suspicious
Mirabel means wonderous beauty
Isabela means God's oath.
Luusa is a warriors name
Antonio means priceless
Camillo is play on the word Chameleon
Dolores means pain or sorrow
Also in Welcome to Family Madrigal. Mirabek mentions Beauty and the Brawn. But she forgets to mention The Brain.
If Isabela is Beauty and Luisa is the Brawn. Who is the Brain?
"I can't roll my Rs"
*Disappointed noises in Colombian*
And Lin does this by having overlapping involved, much like he did with Non-Stop in Hamilton but that's not a madrigal)[also yes, their last name is the same as the family sung song which is pretty cool]
What I'm trying to say is
*I'm a Lin Manuel Miranda simp and I also really love this soundtrack*
Come to think of it I did just get caught up in oh pop song with Frozen. I definitely agree with more narative flow with the songs here. Lin Miranda did a great job. Watching encanto on streaming twice in a week did happen for me.
*We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no! We don't talk about Bruno!!!*
Love your reviews and you are really becoming a [big shot]
11:41 They gave the expression to the other sister, ( _the strong one_ ) instead; a raised eyebrow, a big devilish smirk, all the works.
13:50 Hey, you forgot Milo! You know, from Atlantis, the movie Disney doesn't want anyone to remember?
Now I want to go watch Stargate.
I love this movie so much. The songs are very catchy, the animation is absolutely gorgeous, and the story is just so realistic.
You put every bit of my feelings into words I’d never be able to do! Thank you
i gotta say i watched it yesterday and while i agree that it didnt have some of the usual disney tropes, i still was still able to predict the outcome fairly well still, however it was definitely enjoyable for the most part.
This might be the only Disney movie that I've ever been happy with watching multiple times in 3 months, it has SUCH good re-watchability
Also thanks for the "people who wear glasses are awesome" hehe
Well 3 minutes in ive decided. I'm going to watch Encanto tommrow and come back to this video later
Edit: i have returned after watching it's really good, made me cry. And the glasses struggle is relatable.
#IhaveAstigmatism
Rapunzel's girlboss expression bugs me way more than the others, honestly. I would've expected a bubbly, jump-into-the-fun type of joy on her face, honestly.
Actually,Moana never dated anyone. Like Moana never had a love interest, though I get you don't know because you haven't watched it.
Also Merida. And Raya, if you don’t count the sizzling tension between her and Namaari.
It was trash tho.
You definitely should have gushed about the animation of the skirts. It's honestly amazing every scene
Something small I love is that her glasses aren't magically glued to her face. They fall off, get skewed, and she adjusts them all the time
Actually, we did get the "disney bitch face" from Isabella when she made Mirabel apologize 😌
*realizes Moana has the same subversions you states except #3*
also 4, since the lava monster and crab are both technically villains.
Encanto was probably the best of the newer disneys movie. If you hate frozen you gotta let it go(this is a joke lads).
Its been so long since I've enjoyed a disney movie (the last one was moana in 2016) and encanto hasn't only become one of my favourite disney movies, but one of my favourite movies of all time
Your favorite three songs are the same i would pick but different lines.
"Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under."
"And I owe this all to you, what else can you do?"
"Seven foot frame, rats along his back, when he calls your name it all fades to black.
