  • Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela in Montenegrin) is a small artificial island located in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. The island is known for the church that stands upon it, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The history of Our Lady of the Rocks is closely tied to local maritime traditions and legends.
The tradition associated with the creation of the island dates back to the 15th century. According to legend, on July 22, 1452, two local sailors, brothers from the town of Perast, found an icon of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus on a rock in the sea. The legend goes that the discovery of the icon prompted the local seafaring community to start a tradition of throwing stones into the sea at this spot after each successful voyage as a way of expressing gratitude and seeking protection for their sailors.
Over time, this tradition led to the gradual formation of the island as stones were placed on the same spot. The sailors also sank old ships filled with rocks to reinforce the foundation. Eventually, the island became a suitable location for the construction of a chapel.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks was built in the 17th century and expanded over the years. The church houses a valuable collection of paintings, including works by Tripo Kokolja and other renowned artists. The interior of the church is adorned with votive paintings, silver plates, and a famous icon of the Virgin Mary.
One of the most significant events related to Our Lady of the Rocks is the annual Fasinada ceremony. This traditional event, which takes place on July 22nd, involves local residents and fishermen gathering in boats to throw stones into the sea around the island, thereby maintaining the tradition that led to the creation of the island itself.
Today, Our Lady of the Rocks is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its picturesque location, rich history, and cultural significance in the Bay of Kotor. The island and its church are accessible by boat from the nearby town of Perast.
