The history of the Albanian double-headed eagle

  • In ancient cultures around the world, the eagle has often been regarded as the representative of the gods. Throughout human history, the eagle symbols have played a significant role not only in spirituality but also as symbols of social and political positions.
Unlike the symbol of the single-headed eagle, the double-headed eagle (which we will cover more generally in this video), has a more powerful meaning and is often referred to various empires.
In regards to the highly debated questions behind the history of the Albanian state symbol, we aim to clarify a few misconceptions by mapping out when it first appeared in Albanian heraldry and who they inherit it from.

@progresstothestarsYou sound ridiculous in every word you say. Just BS. First of all the eagle is an Illyrian symbol. Illyrians (our ancestors) used it before anyone else. Then Byzantine Empire took it and continued to use it. It was used by Albanian noble families which ruled the Albanian principalities in the early Middle Ages and then it continued to be used by our national hero Gjergj Kastriot Skenderbe in all of his battles. And we still have that same flag. 🇦🇱🦅. We call ourselves Shqipetare which in Albanian means sons of eagle. Shqiponje means eagle in Albanian. Then we use the word shqip meaning to speak, communicate, to express. Shqiptoj is the verb. So it’s Albanian word. We have the word uje for water and for the sea 🌊 det. Those are Albanian authentic words that don’t have anything to do with your Serbian language. Our language is more rich and way more older than yours. We are autochthonous in those lands. It’s proven scientifically and historically that we are natives in the Balkan while you came in 7th century from the Carpathians in Russia. 👋

The Pelasgians were proto Albanians and were considered barbaric by Greeks. Pelasgian family lists languages in four groups, of which only Albanian is well-attested»
      Oxford University Linguistics
“The speakers of the Indo-European language that would become Albanian and the speakers of the Indo-European language (Hellenic Albanian) that would become Modern Greek were the first to enter the Illyrian Peninsula whose languages are of relevance for modern Albanian linguistics.”:
«Nonetheless, most historians have decided that the evidence linking Albanian to Messapic, which in turn has been linked to Illyrian, is sufficient to see Albanian as a descendant of a language to Illyrian, if not a descendant of Illyrian itself»
It is argued that Albanian's affinities to the Messapic language proved that, at the very least, it was part of the same brandy as illyrian
John Van Antwerp (1991). University of Michigan, Press. Book: (the illyrians were able to rettest into the mountains at the time of slavic migrations and thereby to retain their identities as albanians»
Also «traditionally scholars have seen the illyrians as the proto - albanians».
Scholars like the Oxford Professor of History, Noel Malcolm, link the Albanian origin to the ancient area of Epirus. Again, some will probably oppose this explanation solely due to political bias.
      By Budapest university in hungary:
«The albanians are one of the most ancient people of southeast Europe; their ancestors were illyrians...
      From Linköping university:
«order to understand the Albanian language, one must first understand this country’s history. Being one of the oldest peoples in the southeast Europe, Albanians have a formidable history dating back to the time of Alexander the Great but even further back via the history of their ancestors, the Illyrians.
Published by H. M. Stationary office in university of California
«the albanians, skipetars, epirotes, dardanians are descendants of the ancient illyrians.
This book is by university of california as you can see with the «univ calif» ok the Bottom of every page in the book.
«While the strong men of Albania, like their ancestors Who lived before agamemnon» page 179
Also «the illyrian tribes, now represented by shkypetar or albanians» page 181.
«by constantine A. Chekrezi, A. B. (Harv)» aka by Harvard university (best university in the world), also published in Columbia university as it also says.
«It is generally recognized to-day that the albanians are the most ancient race in southeastern europe. All indications point to the fact that They are the descendants of the earliest pelasgians were represented in historical times by the kindred illyrians, macedonians.» in page 3.
also «this (albanian) language is particularly interesting as the only surviving representative of the so called illyrian group of languages» in page 5.
By University of NORTH Dakota: «the albanians are Among the oldest people of europe. Anciently their country formed a part of the roman provinces of illyria epirus». In page 1
      By Colorado state university:
«Archaeological excavations in central and northwest Greece have brought to light the cultural and skeletal remains of the ancient Illyrians» also:
«the physical activity of the illyrians, ancient albanians...» both of these sentences is in page 1.

I am very sure its done from alba niggaz wich live abroad like everything good that happened in our history . Our recent historians and archeologists have been too busy with politics and they have spend all their energy how to lie and destroy further our country instead of preserving it. What good we had from our history is either albanians living abroad or those that they left like most are doing even now . ofc austrians and other foreigners have done the work we couldnt .Hope this channel will shed a light about us and no matter how little still will help a lot of foreigners wich have touristic interest to understand better our country and they will be amazed to find out that we dont have just cheap seas and montains but also a very ancient culture. By the way, at that time there was no facebook, no youtube and no internet. That means you could not copy something that is used at the other part of the world. The double head eagle in modern Albania was herritaged to us just like our language, which has not been transformed since the Ilirian times like greek or latin.

Who knows why the Romans called the today's center-north of Albania ILLYRIA GRAECA or EPIRUS NOVA with the most famous Greek Colonies such as Apollonia, Epidamnus and Lissos which still can be seen. On the other hand the center-Southern part of today's Albania all the way down to today's Arta in Greece was called in the Roman era OLD EPIRUS or EPIRUS VETA land of the Greek tribes of Chaonians, Molossians, and Thesprotians. The Illyrian tribes living in EPIRUS NOVA were conquered by the Greeks (Macedonians) and fully hellenized by the 4th century BC and thus assimilated. As far as it concerns the Pelasgian Tribes were pre-hellenic and Crete, Thera (Santorini) etc are great examples of early Hellenic History. The "Catalogue of Women" (7th century BC) presents an aitiology for the various tribes of the Greeks (Hellenes), deriving them from Hellen and Pandora, the children of Deukalion and Pyrrha (Πύρρα which in Greek means "red haired" or "fire colored)). Pandora (named after her grandmother Pandora) together with Zeus had three sons: Graecus, Magnetas and Makednos, while Hellen had the three sons Dorus, Xuthus (with his sons Ion and Achaeus) and Aeolos, corresponding to the founders of the seven tribes of the (Boeotian) Graecians, the (Thessalian) Magnetes, the Macedonians, the Dorians, the Ionians, the Achaeans and the Aeolians, respectively. All the following are the most known Hellenic Tribes which inhabited the entire Greek Peninsula, the Islands and most parts of the modern Albania:

THE REST IS THE NEWLY FOUND ALBANIAN NATIONALISM AND PROPAGANDA EVEN IF IT IS FULLY EVIDENT THAT MOST OF TODAY'S ALBANIA HAS GREEK AND NO SO MUCH ILLYRIAN PAST. MANY ALBANIANS ARE EPIROTES WHICH WAS AN ANCIENT GREEK TRIBE. EVEN TODAY, THE SOUTHERN PART OF ALBANIA IS INHABITED BY A GREEK MINORITY WHICH HAS ANCIENT EPIROTE ORIGINS. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED ALBANIA AND GREECE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE STATE SINCE THEY HAVE ONE COMMON HISTORY (WHICH ISN'T ALBANIAN BUT EPIROTE).
Skanderbeg’s (Kastriotis) helmet says clearly his titles and separates distingly the Greek tribes (Emathians and Epirotes) from the Albanian ones on its Inscription. The helmet is made of white metal, adorned with a strip dressed in gold. On its top lies the head of a horned goat made of bronze, also dressed in gold. The bottom part bears a copper strip adorned with a monogram separated by rosettes * IN * PE * RA * TO * RE * BT *, which means: Iesus Nazarenus * Principi Emathie * Regi Albaniae * Terrori Osmanorum * Regi Epirotarum * Benedictat Te (Jesus Nazarene Blesses Thee [Skanderbeg], Prince of Emathia (since he was named after Alexander the Great), King of Albania, Terror of the Ottomans, King of Epirus). So we observe that Epirotans and Emathians as Greeks are separately named from Albanians which means that they were 2 different peoples under Kastrioti's rule.

Skenderbeg, Đurađ Kastriot , was an orthodox Serb. His father Jovan was a ruler of Zeta and his mother Vojislava was the from the Branković family. Skenderbeg 's father was buried in Hilandar, the most sacred serbian monastery and his and the name of his sons - Ivan, Đurađ, Staniša..are written on the walls of Hilandar in Serbian cirilic. This area was inhabited by Ilirians ( Serbs) and Greeks. Serbs are Ilirians who later blended with Slavs.

"There were no noticeable Albanian - speaking communities in the cities of the Albanian coast throughout the Middle Ages. Durrës was inhabited by the Venetians, Greeks, Jews, and Slavs; Shkodra by the Venetians and Slavs; and Vlora by the Byzantine Greeks. Names of towns and rivers in Albania, always a good indicator of settlement patterns, are to a surprising extent Slavic. It is thought that a considerable proportion of the Albanians had already been assimilated by the eve of the Turkish invasion."

I'm sorry but this video is hilarious even more because of the serious narration, I thought i'd see an informative video about albanian history but this is blatant albanian pseudohistory. Some observations I made:
1:51 There is a piece of greek pottery of the archaic period from Laconia, Greece from 560 B.C which you call "pelasgian" simple because you don't want to mention it as greek.
4:17 You say the "slavic" Empire simply because you don't want to call it the Serbian Empire.
4:55 This is the boundaries of the Praetorian Perfecture of Illyricum from the late 4th century C.E. Nothing to do with the actual boundaries of ancient Illyria. You could put the borders of the province of Illyricum from the 1st century and it wouldn't even include modern albania. You obviously use this border to suggest that Greece is included in.
5:30 Double headed eagles were used by Assyrians, Hittites and even Mycenaean Greeks way before you find this symbol in the northen balkans. The Roman eagle was the sacred animal of Zeus/Jupiter/Jove the Greco-Roman god as you mentioned.
5:38 Illyrian Peninsula ??? you mean the Balkan Peninsula?
6:04 The Balkans where mostly latinized or hellenized by that point in time. The byzantine empire was for the most part concetrated around Asia Minor and Greece for most of it's history. The eagle survived from greco-roman times and the two-headed eagle as an imperial symbol derived from Asia Minor and probably Armenia.
6:55 When modern scholars talk about pelasgians we usually mean the pre-indoeuropean, "pre-greek", inhabitants of mainland Greece and the Aegean. But according to tradition the inhabitants of Greece were called Pelasgians after king Pelasgus of Argos who, if we take into account the ancient greek chronology, lived around the 19th-18th century B.C. During this time we know that proto-greeks had already settled in southern Greece so yes actual pelasgians were infact greek speakers.
7:18 The Lemnos stele is written in a Tyrsenian language not indoeuropean and has nothing to do with Illyrian. Illyrian is believed to be indo-european much like modern albanian. The lemnos stele is either evidence of etruscan settlement on the island or evidence of the aegean origin of Etruscans and Rhaetians.
8:34 Dodona is not located on mount Tomor but way to the south near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece and it started as a mycenaean oracle.
8:44 This myth exists but you got it wrong: the eagles collided at Delphi not Dodona and certainly not mount Tomor. Delphi is near mount Parnassus in southern Greece.
10:26 Fun fact the "Illyrian" type helmets were first crafted in Corinth Greece later adopted by Illyrians.
10:40 Amalthea was a goat, Zeus' mother is the Titaness Rhea.
11:00 The "Illyrian" general Pyrrhus was actually an Aeacid King of Epirus the Epirotes being greek people.
11:04 Alexander the Great, King of Macedon was also an Argead king of the ancient Macedonians also being an essentially greek people.
11:44 I've read Arrian and Plutarch don't remember reading that about Alexander.
12:32 If you read the epistole Skanderberg says nothing about Illyrians. He does talk about Epirotes as the elders of his people and also his ancestors following the macedonians of Alexander but this is a kind of anachronism. Like many did during the middle ages Skanderberg claimed ancestry to the ancients to signify the historical and cultural significance of his people.
Modern scholarship agrees that the first albanian nomadic groups migrated south into Epirus only by the late 13th to early 14th century only permanently settling in the northen, north-western parts on mountainous regions from where they eventually spread their dominion assimilating a lot of the greek speaking population.
Albanians have an actually interesting history so I don't understand why you always try to still the heritage of your neighbours and distort historical facts. Come on balkaners you can do better than that...

Both Albanian and Greek mythology descend from Palesgian mythology, and the Palesgians themselves likely inherited it from the Mesopotamians or Levanites. The Indo-Europeans came and assimilated the Palesgians, leading to Illryian and Hellenic cultures.

Dude, these are Albanians.... they don't care about history. They are fanatics, lunatics who want to live in their dreams, thus they fabricate their own pseudohistories just like the Skopjans next to them. You need to understand that we talk of a nation that has as its "national hero" Georgios Kastriotis, a Greek from father/grandfather and Serbian from mother, Albanian possibly only from grandma who fought against the muslim Turks..... when 80% of modern Albanians (Albania and Kosovo) are of muslim background and fought against the Christians on every single war including today (e.g. Albanians were the No1 European nationality members of ISIS in Syria). So much respect they have to their "national hero" that when Erdogan, president of Turkey, visited Tirana they had to cover the statue of their national hero in order to not provoke him !!! You can't make that sh*t up!

Albania is an autochthonous people that has been fighting for its freedom and independence for centuries against enemies and oppressors of all kinds: the Albanians: Through all the struggles and all the historical upheavals, this people has retained its originality; Neither the migration of peoples nor the battles with Greeks, Serbs, Turks and other conquerors and oppressors were able to prevent the Albanians from maintaining their uniqueness pure and unadulterated in race and language, in customs and manners.
      Historian - Hanslörg Frommer

was a German historian and is considered one of the most important antiquarians of the 19th century. The only Nobel Prize winner for literature. The brave ones from Epirus are the Albanians from antiquity, loyal, courageous traditional people whose flag has always been their eagle.

      Johann Georg von Hahn
      Josef ritter von xylander historian
These two represent the thesis of the autochthonous nature of today's Albanians, which is linked to the Pelasgians
The Albanians have a language completely different from that of the Latins, Greeks and Slavs, so they cannot communicate in any way with other peoples".

Have you ever wondered why there are no ancient Illyrian writers?
Why there are only Greek-Roman ancient monuments and temples in Albania and no Illyrian?
Why the modern scientific community and linguists do not find any connection between the Illyrian language and the Albanian language?

The notion of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes has been a persistent narrative, often used to foster a sense of unity and historical continuity. However, a closer examination reveals the complexity and diversity within the Greek population, challenging the simplistic portrayal of ethnic homogeneity and direct lineage from the ancient Hellenes.
To begin with, Greece has been a crossroads of various civilizations throughout history, including interactions with Albanians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and others. This rich history of cultural exchanges has inevitably left an imprint on the ethnic composition of the region. Genetic studies indicate a diversity of influences, reflecting the historical interactions and migrations that have shaped the genetic makeup of the Greek people. This diversity challenges the notion of a singular, homogeneous ethnic origin.
Moreover, the concept of ethnicity itself is complex and dynamic. It is not solely determined by genetic factors but is also influenced by cultural, linguistic, and historical elements. While the Hellenes were indeed one of the ancient tribes in the region, claiming a direct ethnic lineage from them oversimplifies the intricate processes of cultural assimilation, intermixing, and acculturation that have occurred over centuries.
Language, often considered a key marker of ethnic identity, also presents complexities. The modern Greeks language belongs to the Indo-European family but is distinct within this linguistic group. While it has roots in the Hellenic language, linguistic evolution and influences from Latin, Slavic, and other languages have contributed to its unique character. This linguistic complexity challenges the notion of a straightforward, unbroken linguistic continuity between ancient Hellenic and modern Greek.
Historical records further complicate the narrative of ethnic homogeneity. The region has witnessed migrations, invasions, and changes in political control, all of which have contributed to the diversity within the Greek population. The medieval period, for example, saw the influx of various groups, including Slavs and Normans, leaving lasting cultural and genetic impacts.
In conclusion, the idea of Greeks being ethnically homogenous and direct descendants of the Hellenes is a simplistic narrative that does not fully capture the complexity of Greece's history and the diversity within its population. Genetic, linguistic, and historical evidence points to a more nuanced and multifaceted reality, highlighting the need to approach the question of Greek identity with a recognition of the intricate processes of cultural evolution and interaction that have shaped the region over millennia.

@@wardafournello the Greek language was dominant at that time and was often used to communicate with other people who belonged to other nations. It was same as English is used today. That doesn’t mean that Illyrians didn’t have their own language. They had a language, their own culture and civilization, their own kings and queens, etc.
As for the connection of the language, all languages evolve with time, but linguistics say Albanian language is the closest one to the Messapic and Illyrian. Many names, places, names of the Illyrian kings and queens have a meaning in Albanian language. Most of the proof is destroyed or stolen intentionally. Some are destroyed during strong earthquakes in the area and by the non ending wars in this area. Illyrians and Albanians have been in constant battles and wars with other nations for as long as it can be said. Albania 🇦🇱 only after the World War Two didn’t have any wars.

If Albanians are Ilirians, how come there are no Albanian words found in Greek, Italian, Serbian or any neighboring country/language? Also where did the word Albanian disappear in Shqip? Also, Ilirians were described as a nation with very strong sea culture, however nowadays Albanians (compared to eg. Dalmatians) have hardly any sea culture.
I hope I am wrong because I am Albanian, and I'm struggling to find any proper evidence that our "culture " originates from the Ilirian. There is no hard evidence for that, only some vague stories.

An explanation to the goat which one calls "Greek" Amaltheia. The Greeks do not call her that. They call it Aiga or Aix (Greek word for goat, see Wikipedia). Why? Because Amaltheia is not Greek but Albanian. Albanian language is divided into 2 groups. In Geg for North Albanian and Tosk for South Albanian. Here is the explanation: T'amel in North Albanian MILK, Dhia/Dheia in North Albanian GOAT. Tameldhia/Tameldheja means goat's milk. Amel means sweet. According to mythology, Amaltheia fed Zeus with goat's milk because he had to be hidden from his mother when he was a baby. She had saved him with the goat's milk. Either goat milk or sweet milk. Both words are Albanian. I am not a linguist but I do not understand why until today the "Greek" gods have Albanian names and have a meaning only in this language. Until today, no scientist has wondered about this. Maybe they are not allowed to, I don't know. This is a pity, because in my eyes, the ancient Greeks were not the Greeks of today. If you now attack me verbally or try to ridicule everything (Greeks and Slavs always do this when they have no more arguments), then I can only say that I will not answer because the facts have long been on the table.

You do understand that both languages are indo-european and have common roots, also you do know that a large portion of the albanian vocabulary is loanwords from latin, greek and other languages. Some of the greek loanwords are from atleast the 6th century B.C. Amaltheia is the name greeks use for this specific mythical goat/nurse of Zeus. The name either derives from the word "amalthos" which means abundance or "amale" which means tender and "theia" which means divine. I saw that in albanian, milk is qumësht and goat is dhi so i don't get what you re talking about. Also the names of the greek gods all have a meaning in greek and have a indo-european root its actually easy to etymologically explain them.
