Only suggestion I would add is that if you are concerned about getting cut I would use a pair of tin snips or heavy duty craft scissors. Love the ideas!!!!
I did try using scissors when I was testing things out. They caused the edges to snag when trying to cut the tops off. The do work alright after you get the flat section. Thank you for your suggestion and for watching!!
Great video Wendy, thanks for sharing! I have embossed, cut, etc... with the cans for years now, there's so many things you can do with them, like you said, endless ways! Ha, ha, you are hooked now! Jewelry is really fun to make from them, so pretty! Wait until you try the alcohol inks, you're going to love it. I have used the aluminum tape also, in fact in Oct I made some cards with it and used the alcohol inks. I just taped the strips to card stock, embossed it (that hid the seams) then used the inks to color it. I've die cut words too like you did here. They are harder to cut, yet like you did here, using an extra shim helps. I never thought of the packing tape, great tip! Thanks again, really enjoyed your video, I found it through another group we are both in!
@@fabcraftsandmore Hi Wendy, I mainly use dies, they seem to help the edges from being so sharp, yet sometimes I do metal stamping so I create my own discs, etc....I sand the edges like you did in the video here or use a grinder/sander machine to sand the edges, but with the cans, the grinder/sander machine way almost makes the edges sharper!!!
Great tutorial about cutting aluminum. WOW that is the chicken stock I buy! I NEVER thought of cutting open the carton. EXCELLENT idea!!!!! I will definitely try the foil tape...just because I can peel & stick it on any surface!!!
You can buy aluminum flashing (for roof flashing) at big box building/lumber stores. They come in different widths, anywhere from 5 inches wide to 2 feet wide on long (10-20 ft) rolls. It is also very thin and flexible. The cost is not bad, somewhere between 10-20 dollars for 10 ft rolls. This would eliminate having to cut your stock from a can (safety and convenience). Obviously if you really like the design on the can it may not be the way to go, but maybe worth checking it out.
I wear thin leather gloves to hold the can. To cut the tin I use cheap Chinese scissors from harbor frieght. I also use an awl to create several connecting points around top and bottom and on the length of the can. Experiment away!! Good Vid.
I'm going to get a different pair of scissors and try again. The ones I had cause a lot of jagged edges when I was cutting the top off so opted for the cutter. Thanks for watching!
I love the idea of using an awl to make connecting points for the cutting. I kind of... butcher my cans with an old scissors, so this type of simple guide wound be very helpful for me. Thanks!
I just started doing this hobby and really like it. I cut the tops off using my handheld can opener and cut the bottoms off the same way. Of course the can is still curved and have to cut that part off. I found aluminum sheets at Roses store here in my town and I have no idea what they are used for but they were in the cookware aisle for $1. I bought two and am using them to practice embossing on. I also have soda cans that my neighbor gave me and have used those too. This is a fun hobby but I've already cut one of my fingers and it hurts like a paper cut. Ugh.
Love the cardboard tube idea to hold the can for cutting its fabulous I have a really strong one I have saved i knew it would come in handy for something 😀
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's was really fun. I was so surprised how easy it was to do. I have to admit I was very skeptical that it was going to work. HAHA! Thanks for watching.
Excellent video, thank you - new subscriber 😊. I am obsessed with all things metal, transparent, & magical 😅 so I look forward to seeing what else you create.
Omg, this is fabulous! I have to try this! Oh and that is the soda I drink! Love it! Found your channel while looking for some interesting videos to help jazz up my journals. I love making journals! Anyway, new subbie here, would love to be crafty UA-cam friends, tfs!
I keep a small plastic tray from frozen dinners handy to catch the little bits that are removed from die cut pieces. Punch them out over the tray and they don't escape!
Refreshing that you had a die you got for 60% at Micheals. I feel that is how most of us acquire supplies but feel a little bad that we do not have the latest brand release.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍What a fantastic idea. Now I just needed to go get some cans out of someone garbage. I would use the ornaments on the tree and of course in my Christmas journal. Now I also need some of that aluminum tape. I'm going to try this won. Thanks for the idea. 🌻🌻🌴🌴
Great video! I need to buy a die cutting machine to die-cut 2,000 daises from aluminum cans. What brand of machine would be the best to buy? Not concerned about price, just want the best cuts. Approximately how many blades will I need to buy for the project?
I like my Sizzix. There are also electric ones that you don't have to crank. I would maybe buy two sets of the dies too in case they get dull from cutting that many and an extra set of the plates. Good Luck!!
WILL ALL DIE CUTS, SPECIFICALLY THINLETS?????????? I found a die I want to make a pair of rooster earring but Am having trouble locating any heavier rooster die cuts. Any thoughta
Fantastic ideas! Makes it much clearer and adds more tricks to what I already knew. 😊❤️🌸 P.S. What glue would you use to glue those metal words to the card and the other metal pieces to cards?? Thanks 😊
You've probably found the right glue by now, being a year ago. I just thought in case you hadn't, or anyone else was wondering, I would try Fabri-Fix by Beacon. It glues almost everything to everything. Glass, metal, fabric, plastic etc. I will try it when I get to cutting some of these diecuts myself.
I see this vid is two years old by the time I’m watching it but I have to make a point. Please take this as constructive criticism, especially if you have gotten better at putting them out. Way too much gabbing and nonsense. We want to watch tutorial vids, we don’t need minutes upon minutes of yapping and just saying stuff we already know about working with tin cans! I just keep fast forwarding through so much of this out of frustration. I’m here to learn something, not waste time listening to stuff that is not necessary. Again, please take my comment as constructive criticism. I appreciate you taking the time to upload but 48 MINUTES IS NUTS!
Mi spiace ma sono completamente d'accordo. Credevo fosse un tutorial per incidere l'alluminio ricavato dalle lattine invece mi sembra più la sponsorizzazione di una macchina fustellatrice....senza macchina non si fa niente.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for watching! Do you use dies for jewelry or cut designs yourself?

Do they sell it as think as soda cans? I don't think it would work as well with anything much thicker, but worth a look. Thanks for watching!

GREAT tutorial. thanks for sharing
You're welcome. I had never thought you could do something like this. I was pretty excited! Thanks for watching.
If you have scissors like Tim Holtz that have serrated blades, scissors work out very well.
I should really get a pair of them. I see a lot of people liking them! Thanks for watching.

Isn't it fun?! My husband rolled his eyes when I was grabbing the cans out of the recycle like...Really? Now I can't throw the cans out! LOL!
Oh, I also want to try engraving with my Cricut Maker!!
@@fabcraftsandmore Can't wait to see that.
i would suggest using very long scissors to cut the sides after you have removed the top and bottom.
How about a paint roller? Would that work? (Instead of rag covered cardboard tube?)
Good idea!

Y'all need to watch upcycle design Lab. She has a great tutorial on how to cut those aluminum cans with less hassle lot neater with no jagged edges
I will check her out!! I'm always looking for better ways to do things!
Iron your drink can sheets before using the machine!! ( hottest heat straight on top for 3 minutes)
Thanks! I will definitely give that a try!
Will this dull the die?
I don't do it enough to have noticed, but maybe if you are using the same die over and over again it could. Thanks for watching!
Don't die! DYE, 😂
I'm not sure what you mean, but thanks for watching!!
