This week, Ginny, Mike and Tom shoot the electric breeze on a variety of subjects, including World Car of the Year, the long-awaited return of the Ford Explorer and Omoda's arrival in the UK . The team also answer listeners' questions to help them find the perfect electric car.
If you have a car buying question or want to be included in our postbag, add your comment below or message us at info@electrifying.com.
Every week, the Electrifying.com meet online to discuss all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we’re all having for our tea and who dumped who in last night’s Love Island. Between these heavyweight subjects, we also talk about electric cars. A lot. Probably an unhealthy amount to be honest.
And when we do discuss cars, we find out a lot. From industry gossip to the more mundane practicalities of electric car ownership, it’s the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we’ve been driving and deliver our own verdicts on the latest electric car news. We also like to have a good laugh at the daftest bits of anti-electric news that we’ve seen in the press.
We can’t promise that you’ll learn much. You probably won’t. But if you fancy 30 minutes of idle chat and gossip about the world of electric cars, we’re here for you. If you like it / hate it / think it’s too long or too short, let us know.

For Mike: I have had an Ioniq 5 since 2021. I am now on my 4th 12v battery, with the first two replacements done under warranty, but last time I got rid of the Hyundai batteries and bought a Gold standard 12v battery with a 5 year warranty. Had it for 8 months and not had a single problem with it. Get rid of your Hyundai 12v battery and buy a decent one. Your problems with 12v failures will disappear.

Left my i3 for a month in an airport car park with 20% charge. It lost nothing, and the 12V was fully charged. So losing 25% in 2 days is ridiculous. . Whilst in a small seaside town in SW France I saw one Citroen Ami EV, but dozens of Méharis and 2CV’s. I’m with Tom on these, and so obviously are many French.

I'm firmly within the tidy cables in the boot, camp. The rest of the boot is like a council tip though. The leaf has the 2 handy nets either side, type 2 coiled and chucked in the left; no bag. The granny cable in the right net with my tyre pump, comes out once a year when visiting family.

I'm with Ginny. Cable goes in the boot in a rough coil that can get rougher, depending on the weather.

For cable storage, the Seat Mii (UP and Citigo too) has a great little polystyrene well, vertically, at the 'front' of the boot. I neatly coil up the charging cable every time, as it fits perfectly. However the adjustable boot floor gets in the way when it's in the higher position.
    My god that was nerdy.

Mike did you get the recent ICCU recall done, and are you still on your original lead base battery? Frankly a lot individuals have replaced their original lead battery with upgraded AGM lead battery. Frankly I would forced the dealers to replace the battery as many here in the US have done. Frankly the original lead batteries Hyundai group sent out were less than stellar, which is the nice way of saying things. But as you know the sweet spot when leaving an EV for a week on end is 40-50% SOC. I would also force the dealer to replace the ICCU which has been stressed though not showing it on dealerships computers. My guess that is ripe for failure very soon.

Really interested in the Cupra Born VZ and just spotted Tom's review on the website. It seems to be everything I feel I'm missing in my ID.3. The ID.3 has great space, efficiency and performance and the tech is fine (higher spec than my golf) but needs a bit more driving spark. Even if I can't stretch to a VZ I suspect I'd get a similar spec Cupra Born next instead of the ID.3.
On charging cables a colleague of mine who is a 3d printer geek printed a hook for me that means I can hang my cables if they are wet from the bag hook - it basically adds a scoop so the cable can hang from it. Cable either goes there or coiled in the bag.

If you are thinking of purchasing a rear wheel drive car, then you also have to consider winter or cross climate tyres. My rear wheel drive BMW rear wheel was confined to my driveway following a reasonable fall of snow. My colleagues reported the same situation with their rear wheel drive cars. After purchasing a second set of alloys and winter tyres, my BMW would sail through snow bound roads. Several car dealerships in my area actually offered a service (at a cost), whereby they would swap out a customers summer tyres for winter tyres, then store the summer tyres until it was time to change them over.

Mike: do you have anything like an OBD monitor plugged in to your Ioniq 5, which would drain the 12V battery? Or do you have any service (intelligent charging, or vehicle monitoring) that would be regularly polling the car's status over the air? I regularly leave my EV6 (same battery, software and architecture) parked up for 4 or 5 days at a time and the traction battery doesn't lose any noticeable charge at all. I left it at Heathrow on 17% for 3 weeks and when I came back it was still on 17%.
My dealership (Gravell's Kia, Swansea) is very good, and I've always had all the software updates and replacements whenever they were available. It might be worth checking with your dealers to see if there is any work outstanding on your car.

Mike’s tale of his Ioniq 5 running out of 12 volt juice raised all kinds of issues. Firstly if you go on a two week holiday leaving the car at the airport and finding that it does not work when you get back then the car is useless no matter what powers it. Secondly, the KW Half Hour team seem to have some sort of death wish when you think letting any car, ICE or EV, getting too far below half full is a good idea. With talk about the EV3 potentially standing out in a crowded sector, I'm wondering how the Skoda Epiq will compare? Hopefully we'll see a quality product, like we did with the Enyaq. But my worry for VAG is they're too late to the small EV market.

    • @BBingo-v5i
      @BBingo-v5i 4 місяці тому +2

Skoda Epiq will compete in a different class with its 4.05m of length conpared to the EV3 with 4.3m. Volkswagen ID.2/ Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq will be the best allrounder sub-compact EV because they offer an optional 56kWh battery pack with 440km WLTP range. That is just 10% more than the Renault 5 electric but in combination with bigger interior and cargo space they offer a much better package.
The EV3 competes with the VW ID.3, Volvo EX30 and maybe the Renault Scenic e-tech

    • @chris-townson
      @chris-townson 4 місяці тому +1

@@BBingo-v5i Very true, but that's the weird thing about Skoda - they seem to straddle classes by extending the platform to produce something that's bigger than the competition whilst offering something smaller too. The Epiq will be 4.1m and the Elroq 4.5m so both cars have a difference of 20cm compared to the EV3.
They did the same when they replaced the Yeti with the Karoq which was bigger but also introducing the Kamiq which was smaller. I'd say the Yeti was the perfect size for most people and offered practically that few cars in the class could match. A real shame they didn't continue with it.

I think it should be abundantly obvious to every EV maker to place their charge ports at the END of the vehicle, not a meter from the end with a door opening the wrong way [F150 Lightning...] and to have a dedicated storage for the charge cable at the same end of the car! If the port is at the front, surely a froot can be large enough for the cables, at least. If at the rear, the cables could be stored on the same side as the port, in that side area between the wheelwell and the boot lid, not under everything, or even better, clipped to the boot lid itself. Open boot, unclip cable, plug in. Easy.

Is the 2 year Chinese development cycle impressive or bad for durability and sustainability? We really need cars to last. The emissions for EVs powered with renewable, primarily come from the build. If you churn through unrepairable quickly designed and abandoned designs, you are DECREASING sustainability.
Case in point. If you desire a part to keep your 1970s BMW or Mercedes on the road you can get it. Scan a classic Mini magazine and you see that these cars are well supported with aftermarket parts you can buy cheaply. But in 4 years if BYD redesigns the Seagull twice, can I get the parts I need to keep it on the road? If they slow down the redesign cycles, concentrate on a GREAT design that stands the test of time with essentially parts sharing for 10 or more year across subtle refreshes, cars remain maintainable/rebuildable. Note that the thing that takes a car off the road and to scrap is when a shunt or repair exceeds the car's value. We've got to break this cycle of buying cars on lease, or buying new cars for sport instead of buying critically and keeping a car for 20 or more years and repairing all the woes that happen to it.

A question that has nothing to do with this podcast. Most manufacturers suggest that you charge to 80% for normal driving and only use 100% for long distance. My question is: "under this regime, is it better for the battery when you need to charge to 100%, to charge on AC and and not rapid/ultra rapid DC. When travelling long distance, which I do quite frequently, I always start off from home on AC charging to 100% but never higher than 90% (more often 80%) on DC when on the road.

Check whether your battery is LFP or NCM. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are generally considered more suitable for frequent charging to 100% compared to nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) batteries. Here’s why:
Thermal Stability: LFP batteries have better thermal stability and are less prone to overheating. This reduces the risk of thermal runaway, making them safer when charged to full capacity.
Cycle Life: LFP batteries typically have a longer cycle life compared to NCM batteries. They can endure more charge-discharge cycles before their capacity degrades significantly. This characteristic makes them more resilient to the stress of being charged to 100% regularly.
Degradation Rate: The rate of capacity degradation in LFP batteries is generally slower than in NCM batteries when charged to high levels. This means that the negative impact on the battery's overall lifespan is less pronounced for LFP batteries even with frequent full charges.
Voltage Range: LFP batteries operate at a lower voltage range compared to NCM batteries. Charging to 100% in this lower voltage range puts less strain on the battery materials, contributing to better longevity.
Application Suitability: LFP batteries are often used in applications where long cycle life and safety are prioritized over energy density. This makes them well-suited for situations where frequent full charges are necessary, such as in certain types of electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems.
In contrast, NCM batteries, while offering higher energy density and thus longer range for electric vehicles, tend to have a shorter cycle life and are more sensitive to high voltage levels, making them less ideal for frequent charging to 100%.

@@timscott3027 I'll try it and see. On DC, at 80% it is in the mid 70kW's and I have seen it at 50kW at 90%. Never gone much beyond that to see what it is at 99%. Maybe speed of charge at that high point is the governing factor as you say.

Someone got a WhatsApp message during the show right when Mike started to cover the mailbag. Sorry Ginny how do you deal with long road trips or travel to long distances chuck your type-2 on top of your luggage?? AC charging is good for overnight at a hotel for example and means your battery is full when you leave in the morning without the need to stop at a fast charger(DC) which could be ICE'd by idiots and the authorities do nothing even if there is signs it takes the enforcement officer to be there at the time.

I predict Ford will likely sell there European division to Volkswagen, they clearly are not selling enough cars in European market and Volkswagen are very prominent in there current vision and aims. Given that they are clearly doing so well in America with cars like the F-150 lightning gaining lots of traction, it makes sense for them to sell it to a company that has been very successful and know what they are doing in Europe to focus on America, I would be very surprised if Ford produces a model that has anywhere near the traction such as cars like the Fiesta and the focus even if they are bought, and if they do get taken over it will likely because they are on the verge of bankruptcy, Ford will never sell there brand unless forced to do so

    Problems ICE drivers don't have:
    1. Where to keep my petrol nozzle in the car?
    2. How much will I be paying for my Kilowatts? (and you know all those chargers are connect to the Internet for payments, but they can't display the price per KW?)
    3. How much fueling should I do on a high speed pump vs with a 5 liter can at home?
    4. Real world range being about 75% of stated range because it takes 10 times longer to fill up the last 20% of the tank.
    5. Will my car with 20% of fuel in it start after I leave it at the airport for 2 weeks?
    6. Inability to build new petrol stations because of the need to provide Infrastructure and grid capacity.
That's just from your one podcast today of stated problems that you are trying to make light of for EVs.

Are you going to address the current concerns over resale values of Electric vehicles given the price slashing of new vehicles being done by manufacturers, i.e. Tesla? I think the UK Company Car culture is extending the "desirability" of electric cars due to the tax incentives available, vs the rest of the world where the private buyer demand for EVs is collapsing globally. What will happen when the Govt needs to top up the missing tax revenue by cutting those incentives? I'm not an EV "denier" I seriously considered an F150 Lightning when selecting my current Truck (F150 petrol V6 twin turbo) because my leisure activities involve towing over 150 miles in a day during winter weather and I couldn't be certain the Lightning would be up to the job.
On the subject of Ford, they have lost so much money developing EVs, I think they have seen the light that the EV Market is saturated and they are backing out of EVs as the demand is dropping. Ford stopped selling cars in the US a few years ago, with the exception of the very tasty V8 Mustangs.😀
