- Modern gaming can be a blessing and a curse, mere days after a release we can be inundated with patches. Capcom abstained a few weeks, but in line with their Mercenaries free DLC mode they have a new patch for current generation consoles. What has happened to the Xbox Series X visuals after this patch, what has changed and is it all for the better or worse?
As a full time Software/Hardware Engineer for the past 35+ years I run this channel as a side project to my full time job. This is a bad update. Resolution mode on Xbox should not have had its visuals downgraded. This is disappointing. Give people without a VRR display a 30fps cap option. Don’t downgrade the game for everyone.

Oktober, it's version 1.1 and it's not fixed in the slightest on PS5. It's horrible.
The new 1.05 update has seemingly fixed texture pop in and the bad image quality the last update introduced on Series X. A new video would be interesting.
The resolution mode on PS5 has been brilliant, especially after the latest update. It very much feels like a locked 60fps, with all other graphical effects turned off.
Absolutelly agree! I went through it completely in this mode and did not feel drops 99% of the time.
The graphics look like crap though which is why series X users wanted proper optimisation and not rubbish visuals like the PS5 version. Capcom as usual just took the easy way out and.screwed Xbox users to make the PS5 seem better.
It is quite a massive visual downgrade compared to post patch. Anyone that puts thinks flickering graphics are acceptable in 2023 needs their head examined.
There is zero excuse for this mediocrity or for the worshipping of such a rubbish woke studio that Capcom is today. Bending a knee to remove a funny joke from the original game was just pathetic even without thus other nonsense of rubbish visuals and crap quality ray tracing even on PC.
@DEVILTAZ35 you realize that multiple qualified individuals have already confirmed the PS5 has had a higher internal resolution and better framerate since the demo and beyond, right? The PS5 had bugged AA and nothing more. The Series X got a downgrade because it's performance was lacking, no other reason. If they wanted it to match PS5, the Series X would fall below 30fps. If they do fix the AA on both platforms, the PS5 will still have the lead, same as it always has. It's hilarious the hoops that Series X owners jump through to feel superior. It's just a game and the differences are unnoticeable unless under a microscope. Try focusing on playing instead of simping, the hobby is far more enjoyable that way.

@@mikew1080 I have played both version. PS5 has more stuttering in scene later the Game if it dropped under 48fps with VRR. Xbox can do Low Framerate Compersation in hardware. Feel a way smoother in this situation.
No, the difference is HUGE on SX. It looks terrible now with tons of aliasing, ant crawling, and shimmering everywhere.
They have no right to downgrade what I paid for. This is absurd.
Why have 2 modes that are both full 60fps? Makes no sense. Res mode was 45fps at worst and looked amazing before this garbage patch.
It's not even Parity, the xbox series x version is now the worst version...

When you guys have both PS5 and Xbox on screen, can you be consistent about which side is which? It feels like you flipped them several times throughout the video. It’s not a huge deal of course, just a nice quality of life change for future videos.
Same with patch and pre-patch. Sticking with the same side throughout would be helpful.

Thanks for the update. Debating buying for XSX or PC, thinking mouse control is worth getting off the sofa for with the questionable responsiveness. The original felt great with a GC controller and CRT.

Sounds good, think I'll tryout the demo to decide. Generally I prefer a gamepad to kb&m, but as they've sped up the gameplay a mouse will probably help when it gets tricky.

There was no reason to downgrade resolution mode on SX to help the frame rate. There is a performance mode option for people that prefer frame rate over graphics. The superior VRR on the SX took care of frame drops on the LG C1.
That's good for people with vrr, but this mode is for those who don't have one. They however could program a vrr mode that returns those setting at some point. That would be nice.

There's no such thing as SUPERIOR VRR. PS5 uses the HDMI 2.1 standard. And VRR doesn't fix frame drops, it fix screen tearing.
there 100% was a reason, in that mode it still dropped to the mid 30’s at time which falls out of the VRR range if the XSX console is in 60Hz mode. and the performance gains to image quality reduction ratio is way in favor of performance. image quality is only marginally worse for what is now way better performance
Do you had the loading textures problem or bug when leaving the inventory screen? It is now present on XSX as far as I know, but maybe it is a bug as just only some people noticed
Please report to Capcom. Every version of the game has the texture pop in when you leave the inventory case.
Yeah.. I noticed it too.. also when u turn the camera the texture can take some time to load.
Today's gaming industry is dogsh*t. Many problems on day 1 such as bugs , glitches, framerate issues and more. Then they roll out 50gb patches to address the issues. Personally i don't and haven't pre-ordered a game in my life and saved many $$$.
Now if i need to play a game i might buy it after a year or so cause they'll fix the issues. I recently played RE3 remake for the first time on PS5 and it was basically flawless cause they fixed the issues. I can name many more games but it's gonna be a long list. If anyone bought Ghostwire Tokyo you'll know it had many issues on every platform. Now i want to buy it cause it comes on Series also and they should address issues also.
They need to patch the shimmer. Its pretty bad on certain objects to the point is is distracting in some cutscenes. If HFW can look 20 times better than this and its an open world game there is 0 excuses why a AAA developer cant' implement a better AA solution.
Yeah with VRR the game on my Xbox Series X looked and ran beautifully, now it looks significantly worse to the point of distraction.
Is the shimmering aa now fixed with 1.05 on the PS5? They introduced shimmering to the Series X version with Patch 1.04 but "Changes to the graphics rendering process made on April 7 have been readjusted." On Series X and the PS5 has the shimmering since the Demo.
@@flockelocke2297 Yeah the Xbox version has been restored to what it was and looks great again. PS5 on the other hand should be unchanged based on their patch notes.
Would have liked to have seen the frame time graph for Res mode with RT and hair off.
Just turn the almost meaningless RT off if FT matters so much.

Yea I wanted to wait for the PSVR2 version to play the game at its very best for my first play through but I've gone and bought it flat screen anyways.

Honestly the image quality is good for the ps5 I don’t care about minor aliasing and shimmering ; still leagues ahead of the RE2 / 3 image quality on ps4
Yeah but when i switch from RE4 to RE8 on PS5 the image quality difference is huge. RE4 have better graphics but RE8 is so crystal clear damn.
VRR missing is a bummer. They need to unlock the120hz.
This game is so poorly opimized compared to other Resident Evil games. It's a mess. Hair strand still not fixed, xbox controller not totally fixed, image quality is weird on both versions, what the fuck are they doing

Still cracks me up knowing they didn’t even bother with an xb1 version.
Base ps4 apparently was the cutoff point remember the base xbox one was weaker that and well it will still sell loads on ps4 due to the much larger install base.
The XB1 has been discontinued across the entire "family". So why would Capcom even had bothered in the first place? PS4 however, is still in market circulation.
They should have done like Gears of War 4 did and had framerate/resolution settings for Mercenaries seperate from the main campaign rather than downgrading the entire image quality (on Xbox) to make it a one size fits all solution. I'm disappointed and hope they restore the better image.

I don't understand why you didn't do testing of performance mode with all other graphical effects off? This is by far the most interesting mode, because it basically feels like a locked 60fps on PS5.
Probably because he covered those modes already in his big IGN video and this patch seems to only effect the resolution mode. Plus it's the weekend and he's a one man team, not like DF who have half a dozen guys.

@@jedimindtrickonyou3692 It doesn't just effect resolution mode, the changes to image quality and performance are on both settings! The fps gain on performance mode with ray tracing and hair strands enabled are between 3-15 fps boost over last patch.
@@kevincarneling7118 Perhaps, how do you know that though? Did you run capture of the updated version through Trdrop or something? I wouldn’t trust performance analysis videos from anyone besides NXG/DF.
@@jedimindtrickonyou3692 Yes, i have been benchmarking the performance in both the previous patch and 1.04! You can also clearly see the image quality TAA downgrade in the performance mode after the 1.04 patch. But you don't have to take my word for it, you can check the difference yourself by comparing the disc version vs 1.04. All you have to do is enable VRR on Series X and then turn on the refresh rate counter on your monitor. Then you can do the benchmarking yourself on both versions. It's very simple, no need for DF anymore.

Correct, the full game is on the disc! I reinstalled the disc version to get the best image quality back. Thankfully your saves and progression carries over from later patches to the disc version.
You won't be able to play the mercenary mode that way though
@@fall-neckthetallneck2977 Sadly no, and you would have to play it offline with worse dead zones. Hopefully they improve it with a patch but atleast the option to revert to older patch is there. You also save 44gb of storage space playing the disc version!
I take it this patch also fixed the broken chromatic aberration effect on PS5?

On Series X game is a laggy mess outdoors. Massive frame rate dips. Got a 4K tv, Calibrated hdr, resolution mode on, RTT off, hairstrands off. I played my ps5 copy with the most demanding options and it plays better. Is anyone else experiencing this, or any help?
I play it on performance mode with rt off. And hair strands on. I don't care about rt reflections only about rt gi
That's how you should play games on current gen consoles...in framerate mode only. Cause if you enable one or all of the graphical options it will be lower with too much input lag and you don't want that. Or you can play with all options in 30fps. Now whoever still plays at 30fps good for you but for me i don't like it anymore cause since the PS2 till PS4 era most games had 30fps and seeing devs implement this framerate on PS5 or Series means that either they're not utilizing the full potential of the hardware or the big corpo heads want this too.
Maybe now they can patch the ps4 and one versions? Some textures look like vomit
7:59 the frame rate always drops at this turn, but why doesn't this show up in the graph?
Some of the hitching is due to asset streaming. Usually, in low-key moments, but it exists on all platforms.

@DeMiDroL it doesn't affect frametime the way that frame rate does. That's why it doesn't pick up those hiccups on the graph.

I played disc version offline without any patch ( ps5 ) on performance mode, yh it's blurred, switched to res mode with rt its clean and smooth enough
Hey NX Gamer, what is this exactly actually with RE4 on PS5? The fringy, frizzy shimmering I mean. Is it simply the Anti-Aliasing? This drives me crazy because I play close to a 4k high ppi screen. I don't exaggerate when I say it's a little bit disgusting. There is this cornfield area in Village, it's super clean on PS5 and if you would put that area in RE4 it would be shimmering like crazy. Capcom readjusted the Series X version w/ patch 1.05 and the shimmering aliasing is fixed but the PS5 version has it since release. This can't be a hardware issue when Guerrilla could fix similar issues and still have the same resolution and performance with a much better image quality.

I wish you would do a test on Framerate mode with RT on.
The thing for me is that Framerate mode's resolution looks crisp enough, but the SSR is horrible. So I choose Framerate with RT. I keep the hair off for the same reason I avoid SSR - it looks bad.
In all my playtime with Framerate + RT, I have seen minimal, if any framerate dips. At least noticeable dips. On a display that lacks VRR, I would say any drops have been so negligible that they didn't even register.
Would love to see how stable this combination actually is, because for me, RT replacing the ugly SSR is a big win and, again, I have hardly noted any drops in FPS this way on PS5.
XSX runs at 120hz.PS5 at 60hz it means resolution RT runs absolutly smooth even if fps 38 ,cuz 38×3= ~120.on PS5 resolution RT mode staters as hell.
Armored Core 6 resolution mode runs smooth on XSX( ion120 hz TV) PS5 runs at 60hz and have many statering
Running it in high frame rate mode with ray tracing on it is a solid 60 FPS hair strands is still garbage so I always keep that off
Is the response curve/input lag/deadzone still weird on PS5?
From what everyone is saying, the xbox was apparently way worse and needed fixing sooner, but I found the controls in the PS5 demo very unresponsive and annoying which stopped me from buying.

30fps 4k with higher settings etc & a 60fps performance mode would've been ideal imo. Glad, I finished it on SX before the patch. VRR/120hz res mode, hairstrands and raytracing on -> zero problems. "Shimmering Evil 4" - I knew this was coming.
Hopefully the shimmering will be fixed. One thing you can do if you want to go back to previous image quality settings is to play the disc version offline. Thankfully your saved game carries over when playing pre patch version!

"The PS5 can't manage it so the Xbox Series X won't manage it either" - please explain the logic in that statement as since the Series X is a more powerful hardware platform, albeit only by about 15 to 20%, why is it assumed that just because the weaker PS5 platform cannot reach a certain fidelity/frame rate level the Series X automatically cannot either? Are you insinuating that since the PS5 was the lead platform for development that if the developers cannot manage to push the PS5 to a certain standard of performance that they won't bother even trying on the Series X?
You do at least realize teraflops is a theoretical measurement, and only ONE factor in a multitude of many. I dont know how many times this needs to be beaten into people's head, but Tflops is not the be all and end all for determining the capability of a system. I thought we got past that long ago.
Third party Developers have always used Sony as the blueprint for game development. And that’s still the case today they always put Xbox second. With the exception of the 360 and PS3 generation 👍🏻
If the Series X is so powerful explain why the games don’t look better than anything on PS5?
How is the PS5 outperforming the Xbox series X in almost every game when on paper it's supposed to be the other way round? Please do a video on this.
Sony have admitted publicly they pay for priority optimisation so there is no need to even look at the hardware.
It's telling in the opposition to the Activision buyout their biggest fear is Microsoft 'purposely downgrading' Call of Duty's graphics on PS hardware. Sony have deals with many developers, PS5 first. It's easy to see which games Sony are having a hand in and not. RDNA 2 features in the Xbox are rarely utilised also, which again Sony do not allow developers to use if they agree to handouts and special dev support.
Having said all that, it doesn't really matter. All things are only noticeable in slowmo breakdowns.
Perhaps mark cerny spoke the truth when he said it’s easier for console devs to saturate 36 faster compute units of the PS5 compared to trying to saturate the 52 slower compute units of Xbox Series X which is obviously quite a bit more powerful and there’s no argument about it but maybe cerny is correct
This patch tells you how. “Developer prioritization” when RE4 Remake launched, XSX version was superior to the PS5 in every way though both had many issues. But resolution and frames were higher on Xbox. To “fix” all the issues they applied a patch that fixed those issues while also applying fixes to issues that the Xbox didn’t have hence why resolution dropped on Xbox. It’s now on parity with PS5 but that wasn’t the case when it launched. It’s a bit deceiving as Xbox version was clearly superior in performance and visuals but now they downscaled many features that didn’t need to be downscaled because of PS5.
Should have shown the mercinaries mode and also rainy arias in main game.

Frame rate RT mode when visiting village at night drops fps in my experience.
That is the most demanding segment in the game! It drops alot of frames on every version of the game.
Even drops fps when in Frame Rate mode without RT.
No way I want a rez mode on series X locked at 30 FPS

The texture streaming in Resident Evil 4 Remake on the PS4 is awful. 2023, and to see low resolution textures almost everywhere...
I have a feeling the ps4 version was a last minute port because of the texture work. It was probably designed around the ps5/series consoles and then someone figured out if they lowered everything it would run. Capcom would be dumb to not capitalize on the ps4 consoles one more time.
It’s bad on the Xbox as well. Both series consoles have issues with it.

@@Yodagamer1 no it ain,t a last minute port. capcom. plan on making a ps4 version along wit ps5 and series x. it ain,t the hardware papi. get me. its the software. capcom did a bit of bad job at texture aliasing and optimazation, on all versions i got re4 remake. for my ps4 and ps5. and both got the issue. i hope capcom makes patches. to fix these issues..that u can buy from ps store and ps plus. papi unless capcom says fuck it. snd neglect us fans. unacceptable it should of been held back til april. so capcom fix popout and pop in texture issue. .

I have VRR, so for me the Xbox Series X version is now ugly... The deadzone fix is nice, but the image quality hurts so much.
Play the disc version if you want to go back to the good image quality!

Big bug I found. Any scopes you use will drop frames quite a bit. Ps5 ptw
That's every version. They don't use the fakery that other titles do. It's an actual simulated optic, the game is basically rendering twice. They might be able to improve it some, but it will always hurt performance to a degree.

Most people don't use displays with VRR because most people don't upgrade their TV or Monitor that often.

As someone who plays on my 4090 and 7900x3d I could rip into both of y'all but what's the point.
Strange how 5 fps less than ps5 with identical graphics is seen as some kind of win today because of an abundance of bad xbox series x ports while the console still is more powerful than the ps5 on paper.
It is very strange, indeed. Since every other Resident evil game have had better performance on series x. I don't se any elements of RE4 that would take advantage of the faster SSD on PS5 so it must just be unoptimized on xbox currently.

The Series X looks like ass now.
Texture streaming is way to slow and some textures never load out of low quality at all. The DoF is so low res that it actually clips edges off objects in cutscenes.
Trash patch for Xbox owners….but hey….I guess it’s smoother now 😂
They even patched the demo to hide the fact it looked better before. Trash company imo,regret buying the game so much now.

This is the 2nd time within a month that Series X users cop a graphics downgrade to match crappy PS5 visuals. The exact same thing happened with Outer Worlds Spacers Choice where they too totally ignored the superior VRR window of the series consoles and downgraded foliage density to match the PS5.
This needs to stop or they need to allow a mode for VRR. Xbox needs to wake up and say something about this as they were the ones that touted VRR as the game changer that it is for consoles back on Xbox one x. That console couldn’t really take advantage of VRR on most titles due to an inadequate CPU though.
I am sick of devs just making the game for PS5 and not properly optimising for the superior GPU in the series X and Microsoft does nothing and says nothing about this. They even allow lies on the store about a game being Series X/S optimised when it clearly is not in any way shape or form. Being native Scarlet code base is not the same thing as optimised for the platform.
We saw the exact same thing happen on Xbox one X even thought that has close to a 40 percent advantage over PS4 Pro. Now even though the gap is 18 percent in Xbox favour we will rarely see it due to favouritism by devs and obvious behind closed doors money being handed out by Sony to the devs to make the Xbox version suck if you are a conspiracy theorist.
In all honesty after the shady practices Jim Ryan has been going on with lately I would not put outright bribery past him anyway.
Capcom should be ashamed of themselves screwing with people like this after they have bought the game . I am just glad I no longer fall for AAA dev lies.
The Series X got downgraded because it's performance was lacking. If it wanted to match the PS5 version, it's performance would suffer more. The PS5 has run better since the demo, higher internal resolution and framerate. The only knock on the PS5 was bugged AA. The issue really isn't optimization. The Series X is barely more powerful than a PS5 in the best of circumstances, and only in certain workloads. This fantasy world you live in where the Series X will eclipse the PS5 does not exist. Let it go. The fact is, the Series X will never hands down beat the PS5 in multiplatform games. It doesn't possess the hardware to do so. I can't believe that Microsoft fanboys haven't realized all this marketing is power of the cloud all over again. You have a console, not a super computer. The PS5 and Series X are comparable, not two different tiers of performance capability.

PS5 has big stuttering issues at the castle. The maze seems even worse since the patch. Extremely annoying. Series-X has texture loading delays since the patch, where if you go into your case then back out, textures take seconds to load back in.
So we need more patches.
That texture loading happens on PS5 and PC, probably won't get fixed as the only method right now to get rid of it on PC is to have texture settings at max, which are above the consoles.

I played through the game with frame rate setting , but I tried it after with performance settings and it runs excellent..ray tracing really looks great in re4

And with the last patch (1.004) it weighs 4 GB on PS5, not 18 GB like xbox Series 😅

More likely reason is to improve performance which they also states in the patch notes. However, they should have set a lower resolution target @1440p instead of messing around with the TAA, if they wanted to improve the performance and maintaine the image quality to look clean! They also improved the deadzone on xbox with this patch, why would they improve that if they where paid by Sony?

This game should so have been delayed, seems the console versions of RE4 have all the downsides of previous RE games on PC, like broken AA, and terrible streaming stutter.

Reads like a manifesto, call down. We already know that multi platform games are better on PS5, by and large. I don’t believe Sony has contracts with publishers that requires games to perform better on their console. It’s related to Xbox using DirectX (so Xbox and PC versions are easier to develop a single version, but it doesn’t really extract the most power out of the series X) while Sony has their own bespoke API that requires more work to be done when developing the game. Also, they probably spend more time on the PS5 version since it’s a more popular platform.

Wrong. CDPR has marketing deal with Xbox and Witcher 3 runs worse on XSX in performance mode. Check last DF video on Witcher 3 next gen patches. Xbox is just horribly inefficient to work with for developers
