  • Opinions about Capcom's latest horror adventure. I can't believe this series only has 4 games after 27 years! Do they make them really slow?! Watch out for that chainsaw!

      Depends on what scares you.
The early game atmosphere can be scary for some but after the opening Village fight, you mostly fight them in small groups outside of scripted events. Once the bad weather hits, the village area gets a bit spooky again as visibility drops. I personally didn't find the Castle area scary as the robed cultists kinda felt like I was just shooting Voldemort in the face a lot but that is also where you'll probably need knives or flashbangs handy to avoid instakill attacks.
The first Garrador can be scary, and the Novistadors can jumpscare you because they blend in really, really well with the surrounding area.
On the island, the Regeneradors, particularly the first two as you don't have the bio scope, are scary in how their behavior, movement style, and movement speed can change rapidly. One minute they're slow and lumbering, then suddenly they speed up and close the distance in order to rip a chunk out of Leon's neck. Even worse is how they sorta slither when knocked down and can stretch their arms pretty far to pull Leon towards them. The first Iron Maiden Regenerador will probably throw you for a loop too.

Here's a quirk I noticed... I saw a lot of ppl getting grabbed from behind way more often than I did. Kinda confused as to why
But after playing Mercenaries for a while, it suddenly hit me. Cause I'm a native Spanish speaker, I can hear the enemies yelling "Behind you!"with enough time to move out of the way. Ppl that don't know Spanish get grabbed from behind more often.

Honestly, I don't know Spanish but I just noticed the audio cues since I play with headphones on. The remakes have had some great audio design when it comes to the atmosphere and being able to tell where enemies are.
Also, there's a lot of people who play without adjusting the camera for better situational awareness. Even in this video, it seems like the person playing is only focused on whats in front of Leon despite being in the middle of a chaotic assault from all sides.

I really wish they added subtitles to all the Spanish in the game, I think we only ever get it when Leon himself speaks it (which was admittedly a funny addition- how was his Spanish, btw?), But I wanna know what everyone is saying

Really enjoy hearing your thoughts and I usually find myself nodding along with the points you make, but the criticisms on the combat really stuck out to me because I had such a different experience. Getting used to parrying and ducking grabs made swarms manageable, and I’ve been having fun getting full 150 combo runs on each of the characters for Mercenaries mode the past couple days. The main thing is to not play it like the original and take advantage of all the new tools. And playing with better controls (like mouse and keyboard) already made the game feel too easy at times, so I gotta disagree with the suggestion to have enemies get stunned the same way they did in the original. I also kind of disagree with your opinions on the characters being downgraded unless you’re strictly talking about the voice acting which is more understandable. Felt like I agreed with the rest though, especially on the desire for more new games.

    • @Genasidal
      @Genasidal Рік тому +28

Yeah, I agree w the sentiment on the voice acting for sure. I think the voice acting didn't reach the heights of the original, but I'm fine with the majority of the new cast. But many characters have been improved vastly in my eyes. I don't mind the changes to Leon either - both versions of him are great to me, original or remake! Same goes with Krauser. His original voice actor did a phenomenal job, and it would have been hard to top that, honestly, but the new direction they went with, with his relationship with Leon being expanded to mentorship was super interesting. I do miss his "double-agent" agenda from the original, but I still think the new direction is interesting enough in how they played it.
Ironically, I was also baffled by the controls talk too, bc I had an issue with the movement being LESS responsive than the original, and having that "modern game looseness" to it, where flashy animations need to play out for everything, resulting in unfair hits in things like trying to make sharp turns and getting punished for it. In a game with such a fast pace, having honestly clunky "GTA Style" movement can get really frustrating, REALLY fast. It worked better in the other 2 remakes to here. The same can be said for the bloom aiming on the guns. It was far more reactive on the other 2, and focused in quicker, so the overall nerf to focus speed on the reticle honing in makes absolutely 0 sense to me, from both a gameplay and lore perspective!

I agree with your sentiment too, but I also have to say that I loved the soundtrack for this game. Nerrel cherry-picked a section from the game with little to no music to prove his point, even though the remake boasts a butt-ton of new and remixed tracks that add so much tension and energy to the combat sequences of the game. And I will not take any disrespect on the new remix of Mike's backup ost, that shit had me so hype during my playthrough. (water hall ost got downgraded though tbh)

The first spot you can aim at one is near the collapsed structure at the beginning after the cutscene, then opposite of the side of the collapsed building, then at the cannon. Also the new Ashley system adds another layer of strategy in letting her get picked up on purpose for knife kills, etc.

Honestly one of the main reasons I’m expecting 5 to get remade is that in Japan the remakes since 2 have been much more clearly branded as their own subseries (Biohazard RE: 2/3/4), so especially with the way they handled the setup for 5 in 4 remake I feel like it’s pretty likely they’ll ride the subseries out to the end of the original plotline (because let’s face it, the initial story pretty firmly ended with Wesker dying).

    • @rikterterran3833

    • @Enzed_
      @Enzed_ Рік тому +8

But they can't remake 5 without code Veronica. If they do they'll have to change a bunch of the plot to make it make sense for people who haven't played CV. In the new re4 intro they Leon didn't even talk about the arklay mountains, which means if they remake 5 they'd have to change a lot about Wesker and Chris.

    • @BoxoSpoons
      @BoxoSpoons Рік тому +3

@@Enzed_ My hunch is that if they remake 5 they'll cover the relevant information from CV as a flashback. Maybe something like having the intro/tutorial segment being Chris and Claire escaping the prison island, seeing Wesker there doing his thing, then cut to Chris after 10 years of cat-and-mouse. Obviously you need to show that first meeting for 5's story to land, but considering 4 remake seems designed to be the reveal that Wesker's back in the new version of the narrative I don't think they'll be going backwards.
Also if I can throw in something less concrete, Craig Burnatowski leaked concept art of Wesker from 4 remake a while before release, and in that piece he had his arm burned from Alexia, but in the final game that detail isn't there anymore despite everything else still making it into the final design, so we know for a fact that somewhere along the line in 4R's development there was an active choice to omit references to Code Veronica.

Although it isn't needed, it's clear that a remake of 5 is already on the horizon, already being set up by this games co-op segment with Luis, and the boat section of chapter 4, which is almost like a remake of 5's chapter 3-1 in and of itself. The mid-credits scene also hints at a remake.
Now that 4 is done, it's going to be much easier for Capcom to make what is essentially 4 in Africa. The big hurdle is obviously going to be online co-op if they choose to go down that route.
I don't need a 5 remake in my life, but to play the game with a more competent Sheva in single player, and potentially more horror-driven direction is something that I wouldn't turn down.

    @RoflMaiWaffel Рік тому +5

4:44 I did a little experiment on this. So at difficultly selection, someone who has played the original RE4 is recommended to play Hardcore. In Hardcore, headshots and kneeshots don't always get an immediate reaction and a melee prompt, it can take more than one shot.
However in the difficulty recommended for newcomers (Standard), all the critical shots get a reaction on the first hit. Just like how it was in the original RE4. Except in the original RE4 this goes for all difficulties.
I only noticed and tried this after Mercenaries because, Mercenaries mode almost crucially relies on what I'll call "instant reactions to critical shots" to keep the pace and the combos going.
This tweak is a little odd to me, as if the loss of "instant reactions to critical shots" was a change to subvert expectations of RE4 veterans.

I just love that I can say my favorite two games of all time is Resident Evil 4. I’m on the my 4th playthrough of the remake and I plan on completing it as many times as I did the OG.
The only complaint I resonate with here is the lack of stagger. It’s bad on Hardcore and it’s really bad on Professional. You can shoot an enemy 3-4 times in the face and nothing happens. Also, in Professional, enemies very much have magnetic grabs and it sucks lol. Those, I’m not a huge fan of, but that’s a minor complaint compared to the insane amount of good.
I love the different tone and characterizations and it complements the OG well. The combat is some of the best in gaming, bar none. You really have to think on your feet and pull off the execution. It pushes you in ways I haven’t felt a game do in quite a while.
    God, I love this game.

I feel like the comment at the end about it being a good remix is a great comment. I personally loved it, did not have any problems with the catapults (maybe just lucky?) and the grabby issue was resolved pretty early in the game. I also feel that the whole island base section is infinitely better than the originals due to stronger pacing, controls that match the settings, expanded regenerator section, better Krauser fight, and better all around pacing. I actually found the village section to be the worst part of the game, so it’s funny how now it has the inverse problem of the original.

On hardcore at least, the village section is tedious and really annoying. Ashley almost always gets caught, and you dont have the arsenal to deal with most situations. Once you start the castle, the game becomes more manageable as you have sections which have less enemies, and you definitely have better tools to defend yourself. But it doesnt last forever. Sometimes you will need to use weapons you want to save ammo for (for example the magnum) just because the game will have set pieces that will strip you of all your ammunition.
I understand it creates tense encounters, but the original at least allowed you to have freedom on weapons you want to use, whereas the remake makes you feel like you need to scrap by barely with whatever you have. Not sure I actually like this at all...

LOL yeah but problem is that I started on hardcore.
I will be honest with you, the whole charm thing I ignored on my first playthrough because I felt like I didnt want to deal with this mini game. I never had much love for it in OG.
I dont agree that it should be part of the game mechanics though. It should be optional, or at least give us alternate ways to obtain interesting charms.
As for the cases, well I got the resources case because I thought more resources were always better. Although I dont think it was a good idea to have a crafting system in the first place, over just giving the ammo straight away, so I ended up dropping that case for the handgun ammo one eventually.
I dont accept that hardcore should be a difficulty option built around NG+ though for it to be fun. OG RE at least was built such that every difficulty option would be fun, and it is just a skill issue. It probably still is the case in the remake, but I dont know, just my experience with the game.

The changes to staggering enemies would've been fine if they were consistent--Mercenaries feels a little too easy with the new mobility, even with them throwing dump trucks of enemies at you, so I get why they changed it from one-hit staggers for the main game. The problem is it takes an RNG amount of headshots to stagger. It would've been great if it had just been two to stagger and it usually is on standard. On higher difficulties it's more and feels more variable, Professional is often 4+ headshots and it just feels awful. Any difficulty above Standard feels increasingly frustrating and poorly balanced.

This reminds of Bayonetta 2, and how that game's balance made way more sense in lower difficulties.

Standard Mode is closer to the original stagger-wise, it's weird how they say Hardcore is for those familiar with the original when it actually plays less like it than standard. I agree with a lot of your sentiments, although I actually think most of the characters are better in this version or on par, but I differ on your conclusion as I'd like to see at least CVX and 5 be remade before they stop doing remakes. First of all, it's not even the same dev teams doing the remakes and the new games, and I don't think the fact that they can't "replace" the original doesn't mean they shouldn't be made. The reasons these new remakes can't replace the originals isn't really about quality in a lot of ways, it's about a change in the level of reverence for these older games. Many of the complaints about the RE Engine remakes could actually be applied to the Gamecube remake of the original too, but fans were less concerned about everything being preserved in a 1:1 manner back then. But in the case of CVX and 5, the fact that the campaigns are less iconic means they can treat them more like new games anyway, while still revisiting the characters and plotlines the way the other remakes have. As long as they keep some of Wesker's Bond villain silliness people will probably be less bothered by every alteration.

Either way it's hard to pick out the voices on UA-cam that have genuinely feasible solutions, from a sea of others, and I hope yours gets to reach the ears of some people that need to hear it. A userbase typically is the last place you want to hear technical feedback from, because everyone has their own idea of what should be, but within that userbase, there are passionate fans, that while not working in the industry, can still have legitimately good experience and insight, and those heavy users tend to be the most likely to have carefully cultivated thoughts on things. Actual valuable insight. At the very least they shouldn't be entirely ignored.
I guess that's why one goes to work in QA in the first place. But passionate nerds don't make the products, they just complain in public spaces over and over... 😁🤓

I mean look at the story in the first place, the US presidents daughter is captured and taken hostage in a foreign country and they do what? Send 1 guy with a cool leather jacket and a pistol......by taxi to go save her? We weren't dealing with much realism at all to begin with. Something can be immersive and awesome without having to pass a logical reality check, that's my opinion at least. @Scatmanseth its been almost 20 years so it might be time for someone to tell you that RE4 (and most RE games before this recent reboot) are essentially B movies made into video games. The original concept behind Resident Evil, the series, was "take 80s American action/horror movies and combine them with flashy Japanese anime tropes" the result is a fantasy swat team with color coded body armor weilding personalized weapons in a MANSION filled with monsters. If that doesn't strike you as B movie, you might need to watch some B movies. This recent shift toward "realism" is a little boring. The writing is all very skin deep and basic, which it always kinda has been in RE games, just now it doesn't have the benifit of being absurd/flashy/funny as much as it used to. OG Leon is memorable because of how cheesily written he is. Almost every line he has in OG is memorable and I can probably recite almost everything he says from memory, even after years without touching the game. I just finished another run of RE4R recently and ngl I cant remember most of Leon's lines. He has some good ones but a LOT of the script is trying way too hard to pile on the melodrama. It has the same energy as a direct to streaming service mid-tier show you watch once, think its decent and move on. New Leon is aight, hes serviceable for the role, but OG is iconic for good reason.

I don't see the problem with the stagger system, you have to play it differently since RE4 went from pure action with a horror vibe to a bridge between survival horror and action in this remake. The catapult room sucks because the lighting system makes it difficult to distinguish far-off objects like the exploding barrels from the background (which is probably why the item boxes are slathered with yellow paint).
I actually came away with the opposite impression when playing this remake's Mercenaries mode, enemies probably shouldn't instantly go into their melee interact like that because it completely changes the player mindset. In the original and RE4R Mercs, because it's a guarantee that they'll be vulnerable after a head or leg shot, you are always encouraged to go in on packs of enemies to get the most value out of every bullet. When that's not a guarantee, it means having to be more careful and utilizing your whole toolkit to keep yourself from getting mobbed.
Yeah it sucks to get chain-hit by enemies when you're trying to capitalize on these opportunities, but that's probably the game's way of saying "we gave you enough bullets and grenades to keep enemies spaced out from you, stop trying to hyper-conserve all your resources". Sometimes less control over your situations leads to more engaging gameplay.

Enemy stun is difficulty dependent. Crowd fights are made trivial by throwables. The segment with the catapults is much easier if you take a breath and look for the explosive barrels. Overall some great points made on a first playthrough in higher difficulty setting and I appreciate that you pointed out the PC versions problems and benefits of controls respectfully. im surprised you said Leon feels better to move around in the remake; he moves like RE2R leon with inertia and deliberate animation and input lag between actions, ie he will only start sprinting half a second after the button press. OG Leon is completely snappy and responsive

I concur, especially considering that the stun animations are so inconsistent. Combining this inconsistency with Leon’s lag in moving towards them (and overall slower movement), getting a melee attack in feels more difficult than it needs to be. I’ll either start running only to find that they’re not stunned and set myself up to get grabbed, or I’ll have to wait to see that they’re stunned before I can start moving towards them. Even at a relatively short distance they’re often out of the stun animation by the time I get there and I’m a sitting duck. Overall the inconsistency of the enemy design messes up a lot of the game for me. That’s something that people forget about the OG. It may feel “dated,” a term that I hate, but Leon’s movements are in synergy with the enemy design. These tank controls take getting used to, but they work with a consistency that R4Make lacks. Granted I haven’t finished it yet. Maybe I’ll get used to it by the end. Still, I’m tired of all these annoying weirdos who are so easily impressed by something new and shiny that they act as if this new one is somehow, “objectively better,” another term I hate, than the OG.
Also, I hate how the camera swings around when you get grabbed. I preferred the quick cuts of the original. And the OG doesn’t have MTX, also helping it in my estimation.

No one else highlighted the issues with the gameplay changes, how the game is full of instant grabs and the insane tankiness of the regular ass ganados. Thankfully there's mods now that can make enemies react to bullets more like they did in the original.

Couldn't agree more, in fact this is the only honest review I've seen.
8.5 is a very fair score.
It's a good game but it has some very noticeable issues for me.
    - The removal of certain dialogue and scenes under the pretence that Leon has PTSD and the game has a more serious tone is a complete joke. Leon has more puns now than in the original game as he also pops them off during gameplay. "adios amigo" "sorry ladies, I'm a one gal type of guy" etc. They removed pivotal set pieces like the lava room, giant Salazar statue and laser hallway, and none of the replacements they put in were as good or memorable. There is no shift in tone at all for 99% of the game, so its just an excuse they used to remove things.
    - The PC wokeness like removing Leon's "women" line and Luis' "ballistics" line, when they were not unrealistic or shoehorned in in the original game and made sense for the characters is a shame, after all the things Ada has done Leon isn't allowed to make any jokes apparently. The thing that makes it even more of a joke is they now added jiggle physics to Ashley (literal ballistics) that are over the top and unneeded, so again its more excuses.
    - The atmosphere and level of detail in general especially due to sound design is no where near the original, or other games in the series like 7. There is definitely a noticeable absence of a lot of the original life the game had, even when you factor in the updated graphics. ALL voice acting isn't up to scratch of the original, except Salazar, who actually has a Spanish accent instead of sounding like a cartoon. Look at images of the water room side by side with the remake version and you will understand the lack of detail. The soundtrack is good, but most of it blends together its not like an old resi game where you could finish and remember certain songs from certain areas, although it is a step up from the other remakes. The original soundtrack is definitely better.
    - It's definitely not the first game to use it but the yellow boxes thing has to stop. Handholding in adult rated games is stupid enough, but you could make them brighter like the original game, or put cult symbols on them or something more in-universe. The whole game im wondering who would paint all these boxes yellow, and where did they get all this paint, not to mention why would someone highlight everything useful for me.
    - In terms of additions story wise, everything is done through Files you find in the game. There was a couple of cutscenes where i noticed new footage (Saddler influencing your mind or the Ada and Luis conversations) but most cutscenes have been shortened or dumbed down slightly.
    - The upped enemy speed is good. Very good in fact. But the constant grabbing is boring with how frequent it is, and the non reaction to headshots a lot of the time makes the enemies feel more bullet spongy than the original. You could argue the dodging and parrying make up for this, but for people who wanted to add more realism into the game its strange you can now slide at velocity into groups of enemies spraying away.
    - There are other smaller issues like filling Salazar's throne room with chickens just because there is a side quest involving throwing an egg at a photo in that room, or the opening cutscene showing a woman beheaded that you can find later in the same spot dead but with a head this time, weird things like that.
All in all its amazing game and a good take on RE4, and 8.5 is a very fair score.
I'm just fed up of everyone on the internet acting like this game is a 10/10 and the next coming of God, because it really isn't. I don't know if everyone has been paid off to say how amazing it is, but it is no where near as good as people are making out.

A lot of this mirrors my thoughts on the remake, although my opinions differ on a few things. Gameplay-wise, I think this might be the best of the modern RE titles, although I do have my issues with it. I find Leon to be a bit too weight-y and sluggish for my tastes. One of my biggest pet peeves with a lot of modern games is making player characters less responsive in order to have more natural-looking animations. I think it works for a horror game like the RE2 remake where the locations you are exploring are incredibly dense. But, in a more action-focused title like this, I'd prefer to have more movement speed and responsiveness. So, while I would say that the controls of the remake feel more modern, I wouldn't necessarily say they are better than the original.
That's not to say that it ruined the game for me though. The combat is great fun and I can't stop playing Mercenaries. I actually appreciate how arcade-y they made it feel compared to the main game. I might even end up putting more time into it than the main game because of how much fun it is.
That being said, I don't think the modern RE approach to story presentation works very well here. While you could argue that the writing is technically better in several areas, it removes a lot of the campy charm of the original for me. Please don't misunderstand me when I say this, but I think I genuinely prefer the story in RE Village than the RE4 remake. That's absolutely not to say it's a better game than the RE4 remake, not by a longshot. However, I appreciate how its story took bigger risks and committed to them, making the story more memorable for me.
The RE4 remake's story just plays things too safe for my tastes. It doesn't completely remove the camp from the original, but it doesn't fully commit to it either. This makes the story feel like it lacks an identity of sorts. However, I was having too much fun playing the game for this to be much of an issue for me.

I personally adored what they did to Krauser. I never had any attachment to the original, and now I'm fantasy crafting a moveset for him in a VS game. They actually use Darkside Chronicles to flavor his backstory, and him being the one to kill Luis is way better than Saddler using his hentai penis to kill our boy. He's also my favorite in Mercs mode, he has a fucking Stinger from DMC (fits with him quoting DMC3 Vergil).
Saddler was also improved for me: yeah he had more of a jovial personality but his motivation was just "America bad", which fit the 80s action movie tone but like is pretty boring to me.
Salazar was a straight downgrade, I like his voice but wish there was more back and forth than just all crammed into his boss fight.

if you like grouping 5 zombies up, shooting one of them in the head to stagger, roundhousing all 5 of them to the ground, and slashing them all with the knife, you can't do that in the remake much. They made head/leg shot staggers happen randomly now, the knife breaks and drains your money all playthrough, and the enemy AI is so aggressive that you don't have much time to stagger. Its just a shooting game now with running away to make space, sometimes you can do a kick but not as often, the stars in game need to align to allow that. Wouldn't bother with the remake if you like the feel of the original. Those old tank controls (rigid, yet super fun and satisfying to master, classic Japanese action game controls of the ps2 era) are gone for yet another modern, realistic and muddy feeling game.

Either it completely replaces the original and nobody should ever play the original again or it’s complete garbage and nobody should play it.

To me the biggest blow was (and I am really wondering why absolutley nobody is mentioning that) that Salazar is basicly just a boss fight now! He is barely in the game, there are no radio conversations with him anymore for some reason, they took an awesome character, and said "yeah, we don't need him" Dude, no! This to me, is a huge no go and needs to be adressed! There will be people who will only play this and never even think to touch the original, and they have no clue what they will miss: he took the already best part of the game, and added so much more character to it, and now it is shamefully swept under the carpet, like it was a mistake in the original!

An ideal remake should keep at least 95% of the content of the original. So I think judging from a remake standpoint the ranking would be: RE1R, Dead Space Remake>RE4R>RE2R.
It's a shame that some setpieces were removed, death scenes were censored, but what bothered me about the remake is the lack of polishing by the developers: the game has bad hit detection (ua-cam.com/users/liveUOonbfhrSOA?&t=2h08m42s), enemies attacking from off-screen (something that was fixed in other action games like Devil May Cry 4, in 2008!) and not having the option to put a laser sight on all weapons (especially that the laser removes the crosshair bloom). Del Lago could be improved too, since the fight against him remains the same in NG+, the game could give you an opportunity to use other weapons.

When I played it, I interpreted the groups differently. Rather than being stuck in a massive groups of zombies being a challenge to solve, it was rather where you we’re supposed to be at a massive disadvantage, and the key to the combat was staying mobile and stealthy so that you could avoid that exact situation
