I think the mark of a good analysis is making me want to indulge in the content that it is analyzing more to look deeper myself and I feel like your videos can do that sometimes keep up the great work
I personally found the Doom series the perfect single player game. Sweet, simple, good story, and lots of combat. It has everything it needs to succeed, and such a simple formula to work with. And, despite how linear it is, it’s just so fun to run around with a Sawn off shotgun and tear demons apart with it, or shred them with a chainsaw. Online could’ve been better, but the single player was perfect
That's sort of the entire point -- focus on the gameplay, nothing else. Of course, the new Doom games have impressive production quality -- great music and vocals (well... sound effects), awesome visuals, etc. -- but the _core_ of the game has always been _this._ It's what kickstarted the videogame industry into these hights, and it's what still sells, even among all the stories and concepts that fare better or worse. It's a refreshing return to the roots, while still presenting players the option to go either way -- immerse yourself in the story (and there's a lot of story stuff scattered all around), or just get drenched in demon blood. And either one is _fine._
Single player of Doom 2016 is absolutely perfect. I was even thinking it was the best FPS ever. I was saying to myself that it is at least the best FPS game in the last 10 years.
I agree I think it's better than doing maternal. It's one of the best feeling games control wise layout wise. I had played in like the six or eight years prior to a coming out. The music? Everything. I wish this dude made a longer video about this even though it's not as relevant as it once was, but it's an all-time great FPS game
You're just going about your day as a scientist when a giant hellspawn shows up and rips you in half. And then suddenly you're a clone/robot with your conscious mind uploaded to it!
This is probably one of the better videos about the games plot and intro, I agree with everything you say, especially about how the game lets you know who you are and what you gotta do. but i also like how the game is still like it's original counterpart with the "Kill everything in front of you, as fast and as gory as possible", but also has a modern touch to it with the Glory Kills, really good plot and the background of how badass he is. Great video, Amazing Job. I've subscribed.
Noclip did talk about the intro with interviews from people at ID software. They didn’t go into huge depth into it however. One of them mentioned you could do a mini documentary just on how DOOM started. Yet after that video nobody really did.
I would like to mention that the Codex entry you brought up is 7:17. Which is the opposite of 666/616, i.e. the number of angels and God. We find out later that he was given his demon slaughtering powers from the Seraphim which is another word for Angels. So basically I think that means the Doom Slayer's demon annihilating crusade is divinely sanctioned in-game.
Heh. I'm more of an RPG player so I prefer my world story- and lore-rich -- but Doom, much like Quake, has always held a special place in my heart. The early shooters didn't have much of a story going for them, but the gameplay aspects were _so good_ that people kept playing them... and _still do._ If nothing else, this installment manages to appeal to an _even wider_ audience, since it gives you the option to go beyond carnage -- to tune into the world and immerse yourself in the story that's being told through the various details. Unlike you, I noticed the little details (and the perfect sync with the shotgun -- which, as far as I can see on the videos, doesn't always line up) right from the get-go. It sets the tone of the game _perfectly._ It's a massive "You done fucked up... and the time to reap what you sowed -- is NOW."
And, it takes on a whole new dynamic, on your second playthrough, assuming you've collected the bits of lore. You'll know that you're not just a regular badass. You're THE badass. You're the monster that preys on Hell. They had to drop a temple on you to stop you. And now you're awake. Awake to be the horror, to all the demons. So you likely know Hell, better than anyone at the UAC. This will get especially interesting with say, lore Eternal will provide I'm sure. After all, you "wear the crown of the Night Sentinels" and therefore you're just ONE of the badasses who's terrorized hell forever. Also, the Fortress of Doom will add further depth to his character. It'll become his base. Sure, he has a lot of secrets and such to unlock. But there's also rooms clearly to relax. He has a room that comes complete with gaming PC, older PC for older games, skateboard, 3 different guitars on his wall, and a bookshelf loaded with all sorts of books that reference other Bethesda games, and even Duke Nukem and Half Life, as well as Hellish versions of known books. (50 Shades of Slay anyone?) There's a picture of him holding his rabbit. And that's just one room we know of. He likely has more.
He was the ultimate badass, even amongst the group of badass Sentinels. They bowed to him as a sign that he was the mightiest among them. The one who wears the Crown of the Night Sentinels had to be the strongest in order to rule them all.
@@tromboneman4517 Which is also likely why the Marauders hate him. He was an outsider, yet he was the best of them. Even in the art depicting him, the Sentinels gave him a halo, even during training, the way an Earth artist might give Jesus a halo. There are actually a few fanfictions that explore the idea of the Slayer having his own religion, especially when you consider Dr. Richardson's logs. She's already a believer, and I doubt she's alone. All these people need is to find each other, and boom, organized religion that worships the Slayer. I'm even exploring this in a fanfic of my own.
the part where he said there was no family lore that is a lie his son was killed and he made a deal and got him revived but in a diffrent way then he was exepcting just look it up for more info also the poor rabit... the most tragic part of the stroy...
I am a Wolfenstein kid..thus naturally a DOOM kid. When I played the intro to this game and completed the initial killing..i was satisfied and subsequently very, very tastefully surprised by the elevator scene. It took me about 2 seconds and then I realized the E1:M1 music. Mick Gordon nailed my sentiment. I jumped up and fully went on berserker mode throughout my apartment yelling and laughing like a maniac. I somewhat quickly gained control of myself and had one of the best game experiences of my life. ID software and Bethesda knocked it out to mars on this one. Bravo...Bravo.
and then doom eternal comes along and you realize something. SPOILERS BELOW Violence IS the only thing he has left because, with the past games being made canon, he became a broken man riddled with ptsd after killing for years, choosing to stay in hell at the end of doom64. If you played doom eternal (and didn't skip the cutscenes) you'll know that the first words doomguy has ever said in the entire series were fueled by a murderous paranoia. It truly must be a horrible fate to endure.
It makes the intro scene even better, because imagine how pissed he must be at the UAC when he finds out that, because of them, yet another universe is being invaded by the demons.
Yeah, i instantly fell in like with that intro and i've been preaching the new doom franchise ever since like a religion. This new doom along with doom eternal is a huge middle finger to all those boring shooters with tons of cinematics and boring movie like stories. I love it so much. U just play 99% of the game, nothing is stopping you and it's SO FUCKING GOOD. Id software showed them all how it's done once again. Honestly this is such a manifest to old school shooters. Obviously multiplayer will never break through among players cuz well, yeah quake/unreal tournament like games are just dead. No one like this anymore. That new mode they tried in Doom eternal isn't catchy either. But honestly when it comes to single player experience, i'm buying this game as an experience for people as a Christmas gift, even to people who ain't into videogames. It's just so good, works every time. Even if you're not a nerd, Doom is smth u just know/knew at some point. Everyone does, fucking legend and they did it justice right? One of those games u pirate, go through 4 times, then buy it and go through it 4 more times. Not fanboying, just stating the facts.
I always thought that scene of doomguy smashing the intercom as a way to communicate to the player from the devs: We know you don't care about the story! We just want you... TOOO KIIIIILL! (and have fun)
It's amazing that you can read people that easily from playing doom 3 or four times. Not many people can read the doom slayer like you or other doom fans.
Doomguy does have a motive tho, and it isn't his pet rabbit, he avenged her at the end of Thy Flesh Consumed. It's the ending of Doom 64 that connects to 2016. Doomguy kills the mother demon and scares every demon off, and ends up locking the portal from the inside, trapping himself in hell. He knows hell can't ever be destroyed, so he chose to remain in hell killing monsters for eternity to ensure they never rise again. He does have a bit of a backstory, but not so much tradgey as much as a "wow they really fucked him over" Doomguy looking down at the corpse is reminiscent of the original doom. He beat the living shit out of his commanding officer for ordering his unit to open fire on innocent civilians. Likely why he was so ignorant to Hayden, he knows the UAC is full of bullshit. As punishment for assaulting his C.O. he was sent to the UAC with nothing but a service pistol. Then the events of doom 1 begin where demons invade the uac for the very first time. You know the rest of the story
Seriously. It's rare to use the term "cold open" to refer to a video game, but I'll be dammed if that doesn't perfectly describe the opening to Doom 2016.
After playing much in eternal i must say that new doom is better as a game than 2016 eaven much better but it makes some things much worse... In eternal there is no many showing story by enviroment for example in 2016 doom slayer look at thing, pick up cards and weapons and by looking at his hands and actions what he does to every objective in game we can feel emotions and weight in story. In eternal there no many of it and every thing is just translate more to be ,,very gameish" (this is no bad ofcourse we are here to kill deamons) and all story was literaly written on pages in game we have only show who is bad guy and have no much exposition- card and weapons just are colectable items and any of doomguy emotions was showed allredy in trailers (UAC facility).

Yes precisely.
“I assure you. We had the best of intentions.”

Yeah? Ask him if it was worth the risk.

And in that one scene, Id humanized the Doomslayer more effectively than almost any other game. I knew what he was thinking because it was exactly what I was thinking, and right afterwards, the music blends in, and the shotgun racks, and my first thought was "Okay, kill /everything/. Got it."
I guess I'm the only one who was on Samuel's side then
Honestly up there for favourite video game introductions

Aw man that hurts my case a little bit. :(
Oh well, it's a small thing and it still works, whether or not it was intentional.
They fixed that in Eternal.
Doom Slayer is the walking Middle Finger that wrecks everything in his path.
They need a DLC skin for Doom Eternal where Doom Slayer is a middle finger.
Now I’m thinking about a middle finger with little hands with a shotgun

The part of the intro after the title appears where the Slayer pumps the shotgun in time with the music gave me chills the first time I saw it.
His movements are enough to show his personality, in later missions his expressions get better and better, now that's a badass way of showing a character
Notice how at the end of the song used in the intro, the priming of the shotgun replaces the last two beats.

I love how the opening of the game just throws you into the insane mayhem right from the start
