- You’ve seen John Wick take out bad guys like it’s nothing, almost like he’s a superhero! But is John Wick 4 actually a superhero movie? Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, definitely makes a GREAT point for this. Sure he’s a blind assassin, and that’s unreal. But what’s most impressive is his ability to read cards. Let us explain…

No normal human can fall down the amount of stairs John Wick has and still be able to function lol
I don’t know, I mean I have heard some medical experts say that surviving that six story fall in the third movie was actually possible, so maybe the stairs was too.
Forget stairs, the number of *FLOORS* would make any superhero nauseous!
Not just the stairs, with the amount of times John just falls off buildings or gets hit by cars, my boi should have died a lot sooner
Well peter griffin maybe

I took it as he recognized that the deck was stacked beforehand and predicted what cards he would get
There's a real guy who can do that, his name is Richard Turner and he was on the Penn and Teller show Fool Us and successfully fooled them, it's really cool what and how he does it
@@josephhenry8977 I didn't know that was a real thing. I was just thinking that since they do mention knowing that the deck was stacked afterwards
Yeah, seems like a bit of oversight from the mini-theory writers here. No superpowers needed
Yeah I’m pretty sure he also says “lemme guess” before saying his cards. Showing he knew that the game was rigged
It’s the only logical explanation, that he was smart and confident enough to make a bet on it.
While that is impressive I think we’re not focusing on the fact that John somehow survived 2 massive falls (one on to a steel beam and the other onto a car) and walked away without a scratch. Now that is superhuman
Let's not forget how many times he got run over in every movie
@@Bobbb-f3i aw man another guy who doesn’t pay attention to the details
If you watch closely, John always reacts to when he is about to get hit by a car by starting to jump so that he lands on the hood of the car instead getting his legs hit full force
@@AUG_Glow So? A car hitting you at 40-50 mph is gonna cause damage and in both 3&4 he got hit multiple times. Cars weigh a couple of ton and at 40mph you think doing a little hop is gonna save him? Also, there were many hits that caught him unaware. If a car hits you at 40 and you jump up so it misses your legs and land on the bonnet, guess what momentum is gonna do? John was really just running off of pure willpower in this movie, his whole body was just shattered by the end of it.
I still don't like how he died. I mean in the 3rd movie, he took so many bullets and survived but then he died in the 4th with just 1 bullet hitting him.
@@FiveEditz05I feel like he most likely isn’t dead and the end scene leaves it open for another installment
@@FiveEditz05it's not "just one bullet".
John basically never stopped. The director stated that the full story, starting from chapter 1, takes place in 7/8 months. It means that John went through EVERYTHING in less than a year, barely recovering from the previous movie's damages if at all. He was a man on a mission, always, and that kept him going. At the end of 4 he reached his peace, beaten his enemies, and like that all the damage he took, the pain of those months, finally reached him.

I don't think Cain is completely blind and it is this scene that convinced me. I don't think they intended to give superpowers so I think more than likely he has a VERY SMALL amount of vision that allows him to see the vague shape of the symbols and colors of the suits. It wouldn't be unreasonable to see a number of blotches and count that you have a number card or see a vague shape of a letter. You have to realize that such skilled assassins probably pay VERY close attention to detail so I think Cain probably just sees enough to differentiate from the cards with reasonable accuracy.
You are spot on. It's way way way more likely he was near sighted as opposed to being fully blind
@@davidpothier6823 exactly. It does depend how his eyes were damaged but I do think it is much more likely that he still has some vision or light sensitivity considering he also wears the dark sunglasses. I realize the glasses were a design choice to make him look a certain way but if we go from a reality standpoint I don't think he would use them if he is actually fully blind.
@@davidpothier6823 that's my headcanon too. i know it's practically a superhuman movie now but at least i find it easier to suspend my disbelief for jw being uninjured after the two falls
The only critique I have of this theory is that Caine told Mr. Nobody that he *gave* his eyes to the Marquis. Not his sight. His *eyes*. I don't think the Marquis would just settle for blinding, he would have Caine's eyes removed, perhaps maybe have Caine do it himself.
Except he clearly stated before the game that he's never played cards before. So he wouldn't know what to call out or what his card would have on it.
Richard Turner does exactly that IRL. It may be a superhuman ability, but not exactly a superpower. Edit: for everyone asking how, the answer is, a ridiculous amount of practice. He’s likely the best cardist to ever exist, so much so that he absolutely flabbergasted Penn & Teller during his appearance on Fool Us. Definitely worth a watch.
How does he do that?
@@Cipher_Paul he got bitten by a radioactive bat
If I’m correct it’s because the texture of the colors on the cards is different.
Yeah, it’s still a cool trick though
Correct me if i‘m wrong but i think the edge of the cards are a little sharper than normally so he can feel it better and he is just fucking amazing at counting cards
I really want a prequel of John Wick so bad. This franchise is surprisingly really great. We need more of this than another Fast and Furious.

my grandfather was such a great card counter he could keep track of everyone's hand at the table. i saw the scene, and knowing how it went it could be this or really advanced card counting.
hes blind
@@b3ck_odealing cards does make some noise, and also it was clear the dealer was cheating to give them all bad hands, which is how I figured he knew (I’m not positive but I believe he “guesses” what his cards are, after everyone else reveal’s theirs)
It's impossible to Determine specific cards using counting strats lmfao. Counting cards only reveals the number of face cards and 10s vs the number of low cards remaining in the deck. This is how you know when it's profitable to bet highly or when you want to keep your bets low. But you can't use card counting to exactly know what's coming off the top of the deck, just to know what the likelihood is that it will be a face card or 10 vs a lower number
When you count cards you are tracking what has been played before. The count goes up or down depending on how many face cards and 10s have already been played. When the count gets high or low enough, the density of face cards and 10s left in the deck becomes extreme. For either high density or low density. and it's very easy to profit by playing with that knowledge. When everyone else is still assuming it's close to random, you actually know the ratios of high numbers to low numbers left. This is how you win as a card counter. You don't actually know the specific cards or their order lol
Counting doesn’t mean crap for poker where the cards are shuffled every hand
John Wick + Fast n Furious is the ultimate superhero crossover
Toreto steals Wicks car and the whole fast family dies.
No
I came here to say "no" alone but someone already did that, so I'll say that I would hate to see the overblown ridiculousness of the action car franchise disrespect the impeccably crafted stunt work and story telling of John Wick.
for everyone that didnt get it 😀🤓😀 its because both frachises use ridiculous action and the characters do ish that no human could ever do or survive. Therefor: ultimate superhero crossover
Canine’s real superpower is not going deaf from exposure to constant gunfire
UA-cam js recommend this to me... I thought matpat came back😭
Caine was the best part of JW4, especially that scene in the kitchen with the Motion sensors
Human touch is already that sensitive in general, the most impressive thing is the fact he can focus on that sense enough to differentiate cards.
Yeah, telling if it’s ink or print is hard enough, but telling the letter is ridiculous
Richard Turner just walked into the room
So I wasn’t the only one that noticed that. At least matpat made it not a plot hole.
It wasnt a plot hole to start with. Cain knew the deck was stacked, and could accurately guess the hand he was dealt. There was a bit of oversight from whoever wrote this mini-theory
@@tylerashby3522 I was looking for this exact response before commenting. I shouldn't be surprised that the average fan missed the point of the card game. The deck was stacked and the hands were being dealt to tell a story, and imply they were hopeless to win.
It's certainly possible he could feel the cards but I don't remember him even touching them. Much more likely is he saw where this was going and guessed what hand he was given based on the story being told. I expected as much after Wick got the aces and eights.
We just forgetting how he threw a sword at someone 10 feet away from him
I’d say that is perfectly feasible, a sword only weighs around 1-4 pounds MAX. So while it may not be efficient, it could theoretically work perfectly fine
@@umbralcrow I would just like to say THANK YOU. I hate how people think swords are so heavy when greatswords (some of if not THE heaviest swords ever) only weigh 5-9 lbs
Im more impressed he threw sword AT SOMEONE and not that he threw a sword
MatPat should do a monthly MatPat theory upload. I already miss his style of theory.
He is just legally blind.
Leave it to MatPat, to turn a plot hole into a super power xD
Him reading the cards isn't related to the plot.
MatPat is wrong anyway as Caine is almost certainly near sighted to a debilitating degree and not fully blind. Like 80% of what he does and how he handles himself in the movie indicates incredible near sightedness and not blindness so the cards thing makes sense as he legit had to look SUUUPER close at them but knew what they were. i don't think he can actually see more than two feet away from himself at most but I dont think he was fully blind
There’s the fan theory that the John Wick universe is actually an older version of The Matrix.
The 5th and final should reveal that. Wick was destined to be the One but got lost in the world and became an unstoppable hitman instead so the plug was pulled.
It would explain the cartoony 'surviving falling off building stuff'.
I mean, who takes the John Wick as reality anymore. It's a comic.
This is always my headcanon. That the John wick world is another iteration of the Matrix after the third movie ending.
Caine: “I’m one with the force and the force is with me”
If I had a nickel for everytime I saw Donny Yen in a movie as a blind badass, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Especially when he isn’t blind irl
What was the first one again?
@@mjrdanishdestroyer01I think Rogue one
Imagine how overpowered this guys would be if he wasn't blind
So… he’s Daredevil?
There is actually a type of blindness where the blind person can "persieve" objects and colors, even though they can't actually recreate them in the mind's eye. Dr's studies have found that many who lack primary visual cortex function can still avoid obstacles while reaching for a glass of water, but still need about 2 seconds of visual time to do so. This suggests that while a blind person might not actually See anything, they might still be able to intuit visual stimuli if not interpret them.
actually he can many card mechanics do this trick where they actually feel the ink by warming or freezing their hands, and there is a blind one that is the master of this method you can find him on youtube
And Wick himself was strong enough to suplex a guy through bullet proof glass. Ofc an old friend of his also had mild superpowers.
So does that mean we will finally get the John Wick/Avengers crossover?
don't think John Wick will make it to that crossover
Caine said Killa was cheating, I thought he was just following along with it. Maybe he used the Tracker’s and John’s hands as references and counted his own hand

John is a superhuman indeed. If he's normal person he would've died after the fall at the end of JW3. And that fall on the van + staircase fall in JW4? He's a super indeed
It doesn't take super human abilities to tell the difference between surfaces; one that is paper and the other slightly colder and less friction surface.
So yes got Caine actually just being a superhero and yes for the blind people it doesnt matter to be blind ur still amazing
The way Caine could know the cards he's holding is by cheating. That's significantly more possible, and demonstrates being a badass assassin by doing it under the noses of professionals.

Inkreading is actually a talent you can teach yourself right now
Step 1: Find a book that you have read many times
Step 2: Set the tip of your fingernail on the lettering
Step 3: Read while Occasionally closing your eyes, and use your fingernail to feel the microcatches of thr set ink
Step 4: Switch it up with new books
Step 5: Continue to read and use your fingertip to feel the physical ink of the book
Step 6: after years, depending on if you can rewire your brain (surprisingly easy and really hard to explain), you'll be able to pick up a random book that you've likely never read... and read it with your fingertips.
Conclusion: This is only the first thing that you need to do to turn yourself into a superhuman.
They're super powers to the uninitiated. But they're just a heightened sense to the ones who know. It's very much reliant on genetics. But having a lot of practice can also bring out these underlying "powers". They're just dormant until you have the need to access them
Caine is not superhuman ,because inked part of the card is relatively smoother than rest of the card and Caine was feeling that smoothness which is kind of hard but we have to keep in mind that he is indeed blind and all of his other senses are lot better than an average human.
False: the ink could have a slightly different texture from the rest of the cars, allowing that to be used rather than the thickness of the ink.
Yes finally someone bring this up, thanks Matpat
I'll die on the hill that the first one is the best in the series, which you can tell was written to be a standalone crime drama. After it's success, however, the studio pushed them into making sequels, and they decided to take advantage of the fan intrigue that was the enigmatic Continental, making it more into a global crime organization, elevating it more into a comic book sorta franchise.

Blind and deaf people just put all their stat points in everything except sight and hearing but put more in everything else
I'm sticking to the theory that the John Wick films are branches of The Matrix... John(Neo) has been imprisoned in a network that forces him to exhaustively never stop fighting for his life. Every single person in his environment can suddenly become a threat, as they can suddenly be possessed by agents. In such a program an agent who possesses a blind man wouldn't need sight because they are aware of the data stream and can act accordingly. In situations that require hand to hand combat ( in the Wick network especially) being blind would actually be an advantage for one of these agents because it would sharpen all of the instinctive attributes of the body it possessed.
A blind person, or rather 1 particular blind person, could play cards by feeling the difference in weight of each card. Only ever saw him once about 30 years ago and don't think I've ever seen anyone capable of it again.
The real superpower was john wick surviving falling down hundreds of stairs and still walking away perfectly fine
Great video
Love John Wick franchise
That’s exactly why when I first watched it, I kept thinking to myself that Caine was just a more grounded version of the Daredevil.
Not John Wick throwing himself 3 stories down onto a car and just walking it off.
Daredevil: *Finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!*
The other possibility is Caine could be faking his blindness
bro calculated the amount of times those cards were shuffled by listening to the sound and calculated what cards he had
I think a thing to remember is the Killa (the dealer) was cheating and gave himself 4 of a kind, and Caine wasn't surprised by the result, so he probably knew that Killa was cheating beforehand.
Since it's unlikely Killa could pull cards out suddenly in front of trained assassins, he probably used marked cards of some kind, whether a certain color or texture. And Caine probably picked up on it right away, but he didn't tell John or the Tracker, because them knowing doesn't benefit him.
Depending on the cards, you can feel a difference between ink and cardstock.
i love you matt pat
Bro can feel colours
