woooooo did I just hear you say someone say no one could beat them on wonder boy! when I switched my master system on I was wonder boy! awesome isn't even close, I'm too fast on a skateboard for you! and duck hunt don't even get me started.....
I have a story if you care to read it. Back in high school, 1989 I used to play Wonder Boy on my lunch hour at school at the local shopping mall arcade. The music is permanently etched in my memory. I had one hour for lunch so I rushed as fast as I could to make sure I got on the game first. I was usually late for class as most games I played lasted 45-55 minutes. Sometimes the game was already being played by a dirty looking dude in his late thirties. (as a teenager, I assumed he was unemployed), but he was really good at this game as I was. Most times I had the game to myself and a comfy stool. (The arcade provided some stools that were very comfortable). I can't imagine standing for an hour. So I dropped one quarter and I played for the entire lunch hour. I played pretty much every day for 6 months or so and occasionally I would cut class if the class was lame and I wasn't doing too poorly in the subject. One fine day, as the dirty looking dude watched on as well as others who liked to watch the game, (likely waiting for their turn), I remember my heart racing as I got to what we figured would be the final level of the game. It was a sweet success to see the words GAME OVER. I "got the girl at the end", but I expected some sort of story. Either was I was so happy to have finished the game. This might sound lame, but as a guy who didn't really excel at much in my life and rarely finish what I start, I really kicked ass at this game and felt very accomplished. I did graduate high school, and it's decades later, but it was a great time in my life when the only stress I had was from this game. Thanks whoever developed and programmed this game, it was very fun. Thanks for uploading it and bringing me back to 1989.
I was one of the dudes looking at you play. Surely n another country far away, i wasn't that good, but i liked the gameplay and i watched how other more skilled players played
This was the first arcade game I remember playing. It was in holiday at the hotel in newquay, cornwall in 1986. Another memory from that holiday is a queue to play Outrun in the beach front arcade. Upstairs in that arcade, I was blown away by the graphics on a game called Firefox (based on the film). It was laserdisc which was so new and experimental (basically later became dvd). I was 9 years old.
When I was a kid, my best buddy and I played this all night one night at the 7-Eleven by our neighborhood. We were so into it, getting just a little further with each quarter, pumping all our coins into that machine. And then, the effin' storeclerk flipped the breaker for the arcade machine and chased us out. We'd never hated any adult more than that jerk. Makes me happy to finally see this game again, and beat!
Believe it or not, when you get proficient with the skateboard, the game actually becomes easier. The game is meant to be played as speedrunner and the skateboard can actually be controlled in the air.
Wow. I mean WOW! That was a true Wonder Boy MASTERCLASS! Amazing skill. Hats off to you. Some of the later sections and levels are incredibly tricky and to go through the whole game on a single life is an incredible achievement.
Alientcp ye my dad played this on his lunch break in the 1980's and he would play it for an hour or two and he said even though he ALWAYS played it for years he never completed it because at the end he said there was a jump that NO ONE could make on the clouds, but I'm playing on an emulator and am going to try beat him, im on area 7 so im pretty close :D
Quantum Network Yeah, i dont recall where it is, should be around that area, i only made it that far a couple of times and there is indeed an impossible jump. Yeah,Try to do it, but as it should be, start from scratch, and if you fail, you have to do the whole thing again. Im not against the use of emulators, but i am agaisnt the use of savestates. This game has to be beaten as it was designed. Oldschool. XD
Alientcp Yeah true, I don't see any impossible jump here but you and my dad who has played it CONSTANTLY as a kid after work and on his lunch, said that there was indeed that one jump near the end with clouds. I unfortunately did indeed use savestates, but I was using the game gear version which was a little longer with more areas, but I did complete it eventually, biggest anticlimax ever lol. No special ending it just starts again but oh well.
Your dad was stuck same as me, I could get to 7-2 without a single loss of life! I was that good at it but I couldn't make that jump either. It seems like this guy did it in his first try. Its the last scrolling cloud jump in area 4 @ 54:24. I use to get there and then everyone in the shop use to try and make that jump and none was able to do it! To me the distance between the clouds was always too big that you couldn't get to the upper cloud and I swear I have tried every single combination of clouds, waited different times but distance between the two scrolling clouds was always too much for me to get to the upper cloud. I have tried that hundreds if not thousands of times but couldn't do it. I used to play it almost every day for 3-4 years!
@@theDiYwizard I just finished this tonight and this was the hardest part, I slowed down this video to 0.25 and you have to get the jump pixel perfect. Watch for when he jumps and when the cloud is coming down. You have to jump at the exactly the right point. Pretty much it's when the moving cloud touches the static background cloud
I love Wonder Boy. It's an iconic game that I saw everywhere in the arcades growing up (seriously, it was 2nd to Street Fighter in sheer popularity or something). But even though I had it on MAME for years, I couldn't get myself to finish it just because of how long this game is. It's amazing how long they decided to make this game. Players who actually had the tenacity and skill to finish this game back in the arcades must have had some serious stamina.
One of the Best games EVER i had memorized 70% of this huge platform game when i was young ! the Music still moves around in my mind from time to time same like Bubble bobble etc
Haha - I loved this game in my youth. So much fun bunking off school and going to the local Arcade to spend my dinner money on Arcade Games...until the Police started coming in the Arcade looking for kids skipping school ;)
The best game ever for arcade!!! Other classics I loved was Alex Kidd in miracle word, Rainbow Island, Golden Axe & 1942 so many childhood memories would love to do it all over again!!
When my wife was 16, her mum owned a pub that had this game. Her Mum had the key to open it so she used to give her all the money to put back into it. Got to the point she could play the whole game beginning to end on one 20c piece
I really can't believe I watched the complete 1:10:13 hours of this video, I swear that song will ring in my head for the rest of my life. :'( Hats off to you, Turrican, for going through all those long hours to bring us this release! :D
Great childhood memories of this in my village. This game was totally about memory because u had to keep running all the time. And knowing where the bears and frogs etc were.
i've been looking for this game for years, when ever i described it to people they kept say it was joe and mac, but i knew it wasnt, this is actually the game right here, i had nintendo my neighbor had a genesis, so when ever i was at his house we'd play this game,
I started playing WB when I was 9-10 in 1985 or so, made it to 7-2 pretty quickly but just couldn't get past 7-2 -as a matter of fact none of my friends at the local penny arcade could. It was only with the internet and videos like this that I finally beat the game..a good 20 years later.
Although I still do not understand how he did it. I tried hundreds, possibly thousands, of times but I couldn't pass it. Same as you, no one in the shop could do it either and believe me we tried so many ways but the gap between clouds was always too big. So i'm not sure how this guy was able to do it.
At the local laundromat.. 40cents.. play for minimum of atleast 5-10 minutes.. unless you were in the zone and clocked the entire session on one credit - “Rad!” A couple years later you’d pump a golden coin into a machine and get maybe just past the first level.. utter shyt On the 4th stage of Wonderboy (just after the first cave) the theme song changes up.. it sounds almost exactly like an evil rap song from a group out of Las Vegas called ‘Doomsday Productions’ and the song was called ‘Murder Made A Man Of Me’ (1997)
Thank you DtM2000 gor the great clue . Today for the first time i managed to play to a finish and rescue Tanya with a new highscore of 1.902.010 ! This particular jump is indeed very hard to learn. Unfortunately i missed a doll at area 7 round 2 so i didn't reach round 8. Maybe next time ....
It is one of the best games of all times. It is incredible how you make it look so easy. I would not believe that it is possible to finish the game unblemished. I have never seen the ending of the game so I will not watch it now as I would like to get there myself and be surprised but thank you for inspiration.
I played this in the arcades back in the 80s I got so good at it that I went from sticking 20 10ps in to clearing it out in just one 10p but four years later i got the sega master and I have to say thats the best arcade cross over ive played it even had extra levels the original arcade didn't have.
I got a Master System with Wonderboy one christmas. Wonderboy was my favourite arcade game. The machine that I played on made the game more challenging as the stick was always pushing forwards, so one had to ''break'' to stop. I can tell that the Master System programmers paid an awful lot of attention to the game design. It's an almost perfect port.
It is certainly a good port. But I can’t play it anymore. You can’t control the skateboard in the air like the arcade. This is the main advantage of the skateboard in the arcade.
Such an awesome game. I remember being about 3 ft high and having a crowd of gawkers watching me play it. Could only ever make it to level 24 in one game but even now as I watch this vid it makes me appreciate it even more. Memorizing the enemies and hidden spots where you could find dolls and extra lives, the constant pressure of the timer and having to find more fruit to stay alive while also avoiding dangers from every angle. Would love if they remastered it.
It's clear that this is a TAS - the player is able to slip and slide without error and skip all those close deaths every time by a mere pixel. This kind of run was impossible at the arcades.
Seeing how Wonder Boy was actually almost the same game as in the Adventure Island series I searched a bit in Wikipedia and what I found there was quite interesting: it appears Sega, publishers of Wonder Boy, retained the rights to the game's name and characters but everything else went to the hands of Westone, the developer. Westone then worked with Hudson Soft and the Adventure Island series were born, series which became even more popular than the Wonder Boy games themselves. ^_^
As someone who played both back in the day, I don't think the SMS port was anywhere near as good. The main reason was the skateboard in the arcade was controllable while in the air, while this wasn't the case with the SMS port. Also I disagree about the SMS having better sound. Just listen to the sound of getting the fruit for example.
Also in the SMS version you had to constantly hold the attack button to jump high, even if you were running. In the arcade, you only ever had to hold the attack button for high jumps if you were standing still, and you would high jump automatically without holding the attack button if you were moving left or right. Also, you barely seem to speed up at all when holding the button in the SMS version, whereas your walking and running speeds were greatly different in the arcade.
Let me get this straight, SEGA did Wonder Boy first, but Hudson ported the game as “Adventure Island” to the NES/Famicom, which is essentially the same game. Is that about right?
From Germany: My last comment is from 2013. I played it in the pub in 1986/87. I was 14/15. I was addicted to the game. With one credit I sat at the cab for over an hour. And that was the mission: one credit - one goal😅. Never played through. The passage in Round 7 Aera 2 was my achilles heel. In 2015 at 42 years I played through on the original. But only up to Aera 7 Round 4, i missed one dollbonus, only one fucking dollbonus. Had i reached it, the game would have gone on until Aerea 8 Round 4. Insiders know that. But anyway, Tanja was rescued and I had made my peace with Wonder Boy. All these years it had annoyed me that I had not made it as a teenager. With Mame I had practiced all the years (1999-2015), but never made it either. So the real PCB and a cabinet had to come. Man, I've never felt so young since 2015. So many memories and flashbacks while playing this game. The brothers are history ... It's actually just memorizing the levels. If you don't play for a while, you forget so much (watch out, rolling stone in Aera 5 Round 1, don't lose your stone axe). The Cabinet is still here...I rarely play Wonderboy....but it is one of my favorite games of this decade I think..NOW.....i had to do it right now....one mission, just one level....one credit - one goal WONDER BOY ...a masterpiece
Is the System 1 the Arcade? I'm playing this on the Anniversary Collection and, any time I get to the 54:24 mark where you have the descending clouds, there are more clouds than shown here. When I try to jump up the character only lands on the same cloud and I can't get past this part.
All those zillions of years back when me and the other sad arcade hounds were vying for the best viewing position while we weren't playing SFII- most days, a girl would come in, (Yes, a GIRL!) and absolutely OWN this game! She'd play on one credit, NEVER die and keep checking the time in between levels (lunchbreak was our guess.) for about twenty mins or so; she'd then just walk away from the machine, still on her first life, then leave without speaking. (We were too scared to talk to a GIRL!)
Aaaah!!! This is amazing! It was my dream as a kid to finish this game but never managed to... I always got up to the teddy bear. OTL But dude, HOW DO YOU NOT LOSE?! XD Seriously, I was watching this video with my breath sharp at all the moments you were about to lose.. haha, you did amazing, woa, thank you for uploading this. :D
WestOne, the developer of this and its clone, Adventure Island, weren't the only ones that WestOne created for Sega, then recycled for Hudson. WestOne also created Riot City for Sega, then recycled it as Riot Zone (known in Japan as Crest of Wolf) for Hudson.
Here's an idea. How about we start a discussion about a what kind of ending we would have done if we were the game director. Personally, I would have liked to see something happen with all those boss heads. Possibly, wonderboy stood at the top of a pile of them with an, "I ruddy well did it!" look on his face, and then wonderboy scoops up Tina and rides off on his skateboard doing tricks over the credits. At the end of the credits they arrive at their mud hut or maybe treehouse and have a party
I could only get as far as the stages with the spooky music before I would run away in panic. Nevermind the bosses themselves. I had a glimpse of that one day and had nightmares for weeks. Sufficed to say I am a wuss.
WOOOOWW this video game was my best friend!!! I still remember when I used to play it (by the way very well!) and had all the teenagers girls around me!! hahaha the sound effects of this game are really addictive, when you kill frogs, spiders etc....THANK YOU SEGA!!! with only 1 coin I could play 1,30 hr!
not bullshit, me too in 1987: just 15 years old, sitting in front of the cab, over one our of playing and over one millions point. One Credit - one live. besides me my arcade-friends....looking and looking. so much memories by thinking of it.
We kids here in Germany also loved to grow up with our Commodore 64 game collections. Wonder boy was my absolutely fave. No one could beat me. Meanwhile I am 40 but when I see this video it feels like yesterday. 😊

Wonderboy 2 in monsterland was slightly better for me anyway but i loved both.
Street fighter 2

The music for both is excellent

lol good ole days lol am next in line got my quarter up dude....lol
He chased you out for spending money in the store?
I almost had a heart attack when he was jumping the clouds with the skate.

I've done it before and completed the game once.

It's clear that this is a TAS - the player is able to slip and slide without error and skip all those close deaths every time by a mere pixel.
This kind of run was impossible at the arcades.
Hail to the player. One of my favorite games of my childhood, more than 20 years ago :)
I remember playing this on my master system, me and my friends would be screaming every 5 seconds from all the close calls.
Lol the beheaded boss is smiling too at 1:09:38 what a G rated ending :P
never passed over area 6 round 3, thanks for this! such great memories!
This gave me so much anxiety to watch
Ten pence a go in the pub back in the day..and a full hours entertainment...needed a runner to bring pints.
@Turrican0815.... nice video, i played this game years ago, but could never get to the higher levels.now i know what they look like , thanks
Nice man, never completed it back in the day´s. I was fun to watch.
Capolavoro
the most difficult game
Carlos Espinola its a really good game though i love it so much
Gotta get all those dolls if you miss one then good luck starting over
@@moneymoney-ve4jh what even?!
not even close
@@wirti94 how?
YOU ARE THE KING!!!
You are the best! I did never could cross the last hole in 8-3 but you solved so simple. Congratulations!
When you realise the SMS port was a masterpiece. Even longer (10 areas !) + better sounds/music.
But too easy imho
Thanks for doing this!! Really enjoyed playing this game when i was younger :)
Aww yis Memories, This game was my cocaine, i could never stop playing this game
Let me get this straight, SEGA did Wonder Boy first, but Hudson ported the game as “Adventure Island” to the NES/Famicom, which is essentially the same game. Is that about right?
Its same like Adventure island
I was never really good at it, yet, I liked watching people who were, play it.
From Germany:
My last comment is from 2013.
The Cabinet is still here...I rarely play Wonderboy....but it is one of my favorite games of this decade
I think..NOW.....i had to do it right now....one mission, just one level....one credit - one goal
WONDER BOY ...a masterpiece
Is the System 1 the Arcade? I'm playing this on the Anniversary Collection and, any time I get to the 54:24 mark where you have the descending clouds, there are more clouds than shown here.
When I try to jump up the character only lands on the same cloud and I can't get past this part.
THIS IS A CLASSIC!!!! ...AWESOME JOB, CUBEx55
Sega needs to port this to 3DS
@Roymungus its probably garbage lol
@Roymungus I was far from impressed.
The theme reminds me "they don't care about us"
Aaaah!!! This is amazing! It was my dream as a kid to finish this game but never managed to... I always got up to the teddy bear. OTL
But dude, HOW DO YOU NOT LOSE?! XD
Seriously, I was watching this video with my breath sharp at all the moments you were about to lose.. haha, you did amazing, woa, thank you for uploading this. :D
It's tool-assisted.
I used to get to level 7-2 in one life all the time! but never got past it!
Eshlar Tool assisted?
That’s crazy how good u are at this game! And u did it with just one life!
WestOne, the developer of this and its clone, Adventure Island, weren't the only ones that WestOne created for Sega, then recycled for Hudson. WestOne also created Riot City for Sega, then recycled it as Riot Zone (known in Japan as Crest of Wolf) for Hudson.
One of my favourites! Boy I Wonder the best way to access and play this in 2021? Id defo like to.
Bon jeu
Coloré
I thought a game with a caveman was fine but then I saw him riding a skateboard like yup it's one of those games isn't it
Here's an idea.
Awesome vid .... loved playing this as a kid
Joguei muito esse jogo na minha infância, eu tinha medo quando chegava no Boss kkk
I could only get as far as the stages with the spooky music before I would run away in panic. Nevermind the bosses themselves. I had a glimpse of that one day and had nightmares for weeks. Sufficed to say I am a wuss.
+Euquila hope you could sit through it these days ;-)
WOOOOWW this video game was my best friend!!! I still remember when I used to play it (by the way very well!) and had all the teenagers girls around me!! hahaha the sound effects of this game are really addictive, when you kill frogs, spiders etc....THANK YOU SEGA!!! with only 1 coin I could play 1,30 hr!
So true. Every sound is satisfying.
Masterful board control!
10 centavos y ficha 32 episodios y rescatadas a la novia... Una genialidad cuánta nostalgia y recuerdos hermosos
this game was so frickin cool back in th day and even now too...oh th fond memories.
So, this was the original Adventure Island.
this game play is a wonder by itself
Loved this game as a kid. Although my brother always made fun of me for liking this game so much.
congratulations, well done.
I loved this game in the past
oh man I used to LOVE this game I never got to the end but it was still the best game I ever played
i finally found this game after 20 years, played it when i was 5 on arcades and didnt know the name.
not bullshit, me too in 1987: just 15 years old, sitting in front of the cab, over one our of playing and over one millions point. One Credit - one live. besides me my arcade-friends....looking and looking. so much memories by thinking of it.
If you played like this in the arcade where I went in the 80's , you would've been banned! lol.
Knew a guy that could clear this one... He was a dab at Pac-Land too
Great games, great times
I have finished it for first time. I was stacked at 7th level last cloud until I saw your video:)
Same problem for me growing up playing the original arcade
i just had a dream of this game, but a new version which has not even been created yet.
weird dream, thats why im here watching this.
Gotta love these retro games. I think that music must be burned in to my brain
