Yes. I went to the Arcades at 8am before my studies to play for one hour. It took weeks till I mastered all the levels. The new version for iOS using the orginal graphics and code is awesome because you can switch from 2D pixel to 3D anytime.
Spent a fortune playing this in the arcade and then got it on my c64.. All my Christmas's came together that year.. Took me about 2 weeks to finish it but I played it non stop! Remember having all the sequences down cold and hating those 'whirlwind bastards' great video
We had yet so little but we were so extremely happy with the little we got. I remember easily sinking at least a thousand bucks into that mashine around 1988. After "Gradius" in 1986/1987, it was just a given to switch to this machine. During this period of time every single fitting coin I had went straight into these machines.
Wow. Takes me back to a time of being 12 years old living on Ft. Campbell. I probably dumped $200 into this game at the arcade between 1988-1990. Was acting like a crazy man when I finished it in the arcade. Totally worth it.
After seeing the arcade version, I can finally tell what everything on the Game Boy was supposed to be. Like I would have never guessed the final boss was supposed to be an old guy with a beard and glasses.
My parents actually bought me the arcade version of this game in 1995. It was awesome. I played all the time. Didn’t even care I had to stand up to play it! Been looking for one for years since😭
I remember this quarter-muncher from back in the glory days of arcade games! I tried this on Xbox Live Arcade recently (R-Type Dimensions) which is why I'm here watching a pro blaze through the game! I still suck at this game, LOL! Awesome playthrough!
Yes, I remember R-Type in the arcade. Once you play it, it turns out far more intense that it looks. Again, this is only understood after it is actually played.
First boss can be killed faster. Hold a charged shot and be lined up half the R-9's height above level with the belly face. As the face comes out of the belly, the tail will be whipping down, right as it is fully extended, release the charged shot and then the Force. Fire as rapidly as possible. If done right the Force will lodge on/over the belly face doing damage by contact and from the multiple shots coming out of it. It's possible to kill the boss within 2 seconds of it exposing the belly face.
+I like to ground people Rest assured I didn't. In fact I own Raiden Project, Raiden DX, Raiden IV, Raiden Fighters aces, Donpachi (ps1 version), dodonpachi (saturn), ddp daioujou (ps2), ddp ressurection, ddp daifukkatsu, ddp saidoujou, espgaluda, espgaluda 2, mushhimesama, mushi futari, ketsui, thunderforce v, Under Defeat, and many more!
In my opinion, scrolling shooters are the purest form of video games. They are simple enough for anyone to pick up and play, and they are highly stimulating.
My dad has old memories when he used to go to the arcade and play this game. He told me that this game was so hard to complete, he only completed this game ONCE... Only once, but that was all because it took an intense amount of skill to play it (I find that sooo hard to believe) Because the games we play now is nothing as it used to be. I tried the old 1987 classic games and I instantly got hooked to them... I love all games, we should respect these classic games because this is the mother of all our new games. Without these legends, where will our Brand New PlayStation's and X-Box's be? ^^ I love you Classic world!!!

Oh, Yes... I remember a lot of hours was spended in trailer with gaming machines outside the rail station. Full pocket of coins, convulsions in hand and lot of excuses before my mother... Wonderfull era ;-)
Man I would be good until stage 6!!!! I always considered stage 6 to be impossible as a kid. Thanks for showing me the way!! That was some good playing. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾
WOUHOU !! That were games !! F***ing hard as hell ! I can't believe I played the original on arcade and on the Amiga, so lucky to have lived this time and many thousand other games !! Hell of a playing by the way !!
I just played this at my sisters with my nieces and nephews and son. Though they didn’t have a turn, I had the most intense hour before I had to go home 😂 best childhood game!!
The first R-Type strikes a great balance. It gets the difficulty curve right and eases you into the brutality. That wasn’t so common in the late 80s. There were a lot of shooters with interesting play mechanics that snuffed it out before the player could gain a foothold. Most people didn’t see past the second level in Gemini Wing and Dragon Spirit just hates you from the start. The unique mechanics couldn’t reach their full potential. Here, they get it. And the chunky sprites really sell it without crowding the screen too much. That’s why there’s a million sequels.
Now I must say, I am not a big fan of the ground laser, but you have proven it is beyond worthy with the play past level 5. I owned a dedicated upright of R-Type for years (still have the PCBs), and the furthest I ever got was halfway through level 7, taking turns with a roommate at the time. Excellent play through. :)
Just play this for couple hours, still hard as shit; I can get through 1-3 no problem, then 4, 5, 6 just totally destroy me...god I love and hate this game!
I’m On level 7 there all so much easier if you keep the weapons but can do them without and did 7 first time from the start of level 7 I can currently do one to 6 perfect no deaths now I’m try for 1-6 which I can do most times now first time But 7 is hard as shit you don’t stand a chance without the guns so what’s the earliest level you can still get all weapons from By level 7 I still have start again but die soon as the level starts or before it’s so frustrating when
Fantastic game play, I remember my Best friend completing this game on the Amiga AND HATED HIM EVER SINCE LOL:) His Younger BROTHER then complete Ghouls 'n Ghosts and got a mention in the local papers as you had to complete Ghouls 'n Ghosts TWICE to defeat it lol:) I love RTYPE!!
I was an arcade addict from 13-28.. soooo Bubble bobble.. track n field.. Nemesis.. splatterhouse.. r type.. strider.. streetfighter 1/2 world cup.. outrun.. gauntlet.. 1942.. were my thing. Used to clock em all. Got my monies worth 🤣
used to play @ this on a black & white tv-set connected to a commodore 64 platform with bigass floppys. (wasn't that good tho). more than 30yrs later managed to see of what colours things were. really, many thanks for the upload.
I used to play R-type in the arcade- great game, watching you play it was interesting, some similar strategies to my own but you obviously know a lot of 'safe spots' - did you ever manage to do the second loop?
a very good game.. it took me a lot of coins to reach level 6.. never got beyond that. I wonder what kind of microprocessors and programming tools were used for these goldies. They still look wonderful...
3rd boss can be killed much faster as well, by keeping the air to air laser (blue/red double helix). Rear mount it to handle the front cannons and other gunnery above. Quickly make your way back ignoring the reflect laser and take out the multi-directional firing pod with your Force. Quickly release the Force and front mount it staying right over the ships final weak point to absorb the shots it fires upward. As soon as it pulls in stick your Force into it and fire away. Done right the ship is done before the level music has faded out and the boss level music begun.
I was nearly convinced that this was legit - until the last boss where you can clearly see the projectile passing straight through the ship without destroying it
Ridiculously hard game but so much fun; still no better at it now than when I was a kid. Levels 1, 2 and 3 were a breeze. 4 used to get me 50% of the time, and 5 was the killer. I did beat 5 on one occasion and the heroic music on 6 made me think it was the final level. I died before the boss and never found out the game had 2 more levels for years!
@HOUGoofballs yes I'm currently playing it on vizzed retro gaming on turbograpfx is virtually same as arcade and level 6 still has the crates as the boss but there is a extended boss too after the crates where u go in another room where he shoots fire from top and bottom and you have to make your way to its head to shoot at on the far right of the screen
Oh so many memories, I sucked so much at my childhood. But at my teenage year gotten better but only made it to stage 5, the rest is hard. I made it to 6 but insane due to those crazy gadgets everywhere >.
THE best shooter in the arcade rooms in 1987. Huge hit when it came out.
Yes. I went to the Arcades at 8am before my studies to play for one hour. It took weeks till I mastered all the levels. The new version for iOS using the orginal graphics and code is awesome because you can switch from 2D pixel to 3D anytime.
I agree totally.. R type is a masterpiece 😈😈😈
The hardest one to beat..... Ever
Better then life force NES
hard game but brilliant to master. ...I've done it. ..
another classic that was waaaay ahead of its time. One of the best power up games back then
2024, its still legendary. Feels like a PS4 game.
I was addicted to this game and I would play this for hours. Even though the farthest I could get to was the 4th stage
For r-type dimensions, I could only get to stage 6 in classic mode
Level 6 is really dumb the enemies look like Trumpets also the final stage is pretty lame
Spent a fortune playing this in the arcade and then got it on my c64.. All my Christmas's came together that year.. Took me about 2 weeks to finish it but I played it non stop! Remember having all the sequences down cold and hating those 'whirlwind bastards' great video
No one could complete it in two weeks I call bs
We had yet so little but we were so extremely happy with the little we got.

The top side scrolling shooter of the 1980's, so good ni fact that it lasted from 1987 to well into mid 1990's.
My dad is the only person I know personally that could mow through this game.
fair play
