I was on the edge of my seat. I should have watched this BEFORE I ordered mine, but I got lucky this time. Great video, thank you
Not sure what you mean. Did it not perform as it should have?
@@BeamMonsterZeus they performed great. I just bought mine before doing any research. At the time they were the cheapest option. I watched the video hoping I hadn't bought trash.
@@LeperKing14 I ordered them online

Took a Level III+ Steel plate from these guys with me to the range today. It's a 6" X 8" side plate. I hit it with 3 rounds of M193 from a 16" barrel, then 6 rounds of M855 from a 14.5" barrel at about 20 ft. The steel held up just fine with only slight dings up front and no buldges in the back. What surprised me just a bit was the first shot blew off all of the spall like it was a cover. It landed about a foot away fully intact with a hole in it. I wasn't expecting that.
These were the first plates I ever purchased and I've since replaced them with their PE plates. I love the PE plates. I can now wear my carrier all day if needed. The steel plates were just too darn heavy for me.
The spall coat is not finished. If you coat it with a rubber seal, like flex seal, you are multiplying its tactile strength tremendously. Make sure it cures well, treat it like a baby, and you'll have yourself a very durable plate. Can't have the best for the lowest price lol I will note though that it makes a lot of sense to have steel at home, soft on your person.
So, what are you thoughts on the PE plates after some time of use?
I think the carrier would have helped the spalling stay in place
Pretty damn impressive for really cheap plates. They sell a 4 plate and carrier for around 150. Was curious if they actually would hold up. Thanks for another great video mrguns ✊🔫🇺🇸
Thank you! Saw a lot of folks complaining about how cheap they are, but nobody could say whether they actually WORKED. I don't care if I'm not tacticool, as long as it stops whatever it's supposed to.
Hey man don't worry!, the wind was no problem as far as the audio portion. It may have bothered you, but was a non-issue, good vid thanks!
Love how the box you used to stand it against says "GLASS handle with care"
Love Tactical Scorpion! Have made 3 purchases recently. Very pleased.
I like how you're not biased and compare value to price. Obviously there's better but that's with everything. Great video man you convinced me to subscribe. 👍
welcome to the channel!
It's been a while since this video was released, but I've got to say that I still appreciate it. Just ordered a set of plates from them. Thank you for the review.
I think I might too 😊 did you opt for all the add ons?
@mariocooldude9092 I got the 3+ with the spall coating, no trauma pads and flat cut. I had pads, though so if you don't I'd get them. But even the flat ones aren't uncomfortable.
@@bence4542 thanks for your time brother 👍 be safe
@mariocooldude9092 No worries, man. I'm happy to help where I can.
I put their spall bags over my plates that had trauma plate also..... i wish you could have tested that too.... the base coat is just to protect plate against sweat etc.
edcrobert T yes im very happy with them and they will protect you just fine! Made from soft armor stuff and are thick with a trauma pad to boot built in! Get them!!
they have base coat option and spall protection option on website. not same coating as rust protection on spall protecvtion
Still relatively cheap today. I bought a set today. $208.00 after tax with the plate carrier included.
@Von Kaiser it's a bit heavy but does the job.
I have multiple now, with two different side plate designs. Without having been shot I can say they're at least well-fitting and offer excellent coverage. Got any questions though? I think I have them figured out
Thank you for doing this test! I bought a full set of this last spring and was curious about its performance.
you're welcome
The sound when that 55gr punched through in slo-mo was epic. Great vid. I love that you do reviews in an easily digestible format.
thank you!
mperr7530 that was crazy!
I’m actually amazed that a 55gr .233 did what it did. So many types of calibers and effectiveness are very interesting
I just ordered a plate some 4 days ago and already got it. I know a lot of people are waiting on average a month. I guess I got lucky.
I was able to snag everything (plates and carrier) with no wait. It’s rare to not have any lead times
I just got a pair today. I paid $88 w/free shipping. I ordered on the 6th and live in las vegas, NV. So ya, 3 day shipping damn near across the country. P.s. the pair also came with a set of trauma pads too. All in all after watching this video I'm quite happy. 😎👍🇺🇸
nice!
Where did you order yours from.Elwood Sherman. Thanks.
Just bought some last week! Glad to know it was a good purchase
I ordered a pair very impressed with the spall coating thanks for the video
If you're concerned about spalling, you can always pick up a fiberglass welding blanket and epoxy about 5 or 6 layers of fiberglass and epoxy should catch fragments as long as the fiberglass wraps back around the back side of the plate as well.
I put a 3a soft panel over mine.. just my preference
Ahhh yes, good ol' Paul Mason brandy! Takes me back to my younger days, don't ever remember chasing it with bullets though...
👍🏽
Thanks for doing this. I've been wondering about these plates for a while now.
you're welcome
Great video man I actually just ordered my plates last Friday and they come in this Tuesday I spent exactly $100.90 I got the deal for two plates and trauma pads for my job and I’m glad I watched these reviews
They're about 17 pounds combined. You wear those daily for your job?
@@bikesnyikes1688 I do. And I also work out a lot so it really isn't much to me
That's the base coat version... They offer a anti spall build up coat that's a quarter inch thick. And right now if you put the whole kit in your "watch" list on eBay and then view it from your watch list it is significantly reduced in price. You get the 3+ which is lighter & stronger than ar500&650...the anti splatter buildup, trauma pads & a plate carrier. All for the price of the base coated heavy ar500 without any add-ons. Black Friday weekend special... Makes a great deal.
Awesome Video.... Thank You for sharing this. I will be picking up a set FOR SURE! Thanks
you're welcome
Phil G. Either get the spall protector that the plates velcro in or get the spall coating!! Fyi
I built a 20" AR for this exact reason.
I have a 16", but at HD distances 50 grain TSX takes care of us sub-20" guys. I think it's good within fifty feet minimum, potentially more depending on elevation and temperature. I'm also very curious what some of the really light weight varmint loads would do - I've seen a solid copper 36 grainer advertised as doing 3700 fps.
angry zergling lightweight varmint bullets would probably not hold together penetrating anything, because they are designed turn into a million pieces upon impacting the smallest of animals.
@@bly4233 Just get non frangibles and try it.
@I AM EL NINO!
There is a video floating around, where they used an AR15 with 20" barrel and and also 2, other AK's maybe another AR also, but started at 200 yards on an AR500 PLATE. They used various ammo manufacturers. And between Wolf Gold and M855, those 2 banged the plate the worst and the deepest on a 1/2" AR500, PLATE.
When they got to 50ft, they refused to shoot the M855. What surprised me, was M193 was stopped all the way to 50y from the 20" barrel.
My statement is this. Do it to a 1/4" plate with the rino liner with a 20" barrel starting at 200 yards, then 150y, 100y, then 50 y....
Only then will we know.
And they make level 4 for that lol.... It's all "bullet resistant" though...
You said highly unlikely to encounter someone with a 20" and 55 grain ammo. I'd be inclined to agree but my HD rifle (only rifle currently) is a 20". I keep a mag of Magtech/CBC 77 OTM in it by the bedside but I stockpile Magtech /CBC M193 which advertises at 3,265 fps. Haha. I tested it on my friends chrono and we got 3,259 10 shot average, 1 was 3,297 if i remember correctly.
When I built my first gun and chose the ammo I had no idea I was building an ideal armor penetrator.
I mainly decided on 20" for superior ballistics and to not be on the carbine bandwagon. However now I want a 10" pistol and a 14.5 carbine.
Ranty rant rant.
Let me guess psa? If you only have one ar why would you do a 20. And to keep my bedside? You cant move that around your house very easy. Idk why peoplr get ars and add huge scopes to them. Its a midrange fighting rifle. Itll be ok if you have 2. I have a 2 16 inch and 1 18 and 1 10.5. 16 is my main battle rifle.
The 20 inch ar is debatable there's plenty of common hunting rounds that are even more spicy regardless of penetration factor getting hit by some of them will still rock your world but it was presented well with the common defensive firearms in the u.s
I shot up the same plates and got the same results with one exception. When I put a plate at a 40-45° angle i did not get complete penitration with 5.56 winchester white box but i did get a lot of spall coating removal . As in a 5-4 in sheet came off.
Great review. Thank you. I thought it would have spalled badly. You've changed my mind about these plates. Thumbs up.

Just picked up a set of level 3 with trauma pads, shipping and tax for 87.87
Of course you have a review video for something I was just looking at online. We have good taste.
I was warned about buying products from Scorpion Gear. That warning is spot on, in my opinion! STG does not stand behind their word or work. They don’t care. If you dare question them the become rude and hateful!
I got these plates and what I did was bought airsoft plates the soft ones put that on the front of the plate and ductaped it to the front of the plate and painted the whole thing with rino liner to stop the sprawling.
I new when I bought my first AR and still my only that it would have a 20” barrel. I love it especially when I slap my bayonet on .
Dude everyone I know from Narf Cackalacky has THE most intense accent... I would never have guessed you're from down that way (although conversely they say I have an "Oregon accent" which I can't for the life of me discern what that is LOL). End of useless post LOL.
OK, just to make it less useless: Keep up the great work mate, I totally agree with and support your position about fighting for 2a/Gun owners voices from within the Social media structure and good on ya for sticking it out and not backing down. Your channel is among the VERY best on the internet and it comes in no small part from your straight-forward review style/presentation and your personality that shows so much in the way you present things (I always think you;re gonna bust up laughing and all I can say is there need to be more LEO's like you in this country and I say that as a former FF/Medic and I mean it as a compliment to you not a knock on law-enforcement in general). You and a few others are the first thing I look to when I'm contemplating a new product and I'm actually bummed if I see you've not reviewed something because it's a missing but important data-point to me. Ok, I've rambled more then enough, cheers mate.
thanks
Excellent video, if I can make one comment it would say the terms are being misused. Splatter/splash is when the projectile does not penetrate an object. The round breaks apart and takes the path of least resistance creating bullet splash or splatter. Spalling is when the projectile penetrates an object and the material the projectile penetrates is projected forward creating spalling.
Whatever the case may be, the manufacturers call it spall.
Technically, spalling is when a projectile does NOT penetrate armor but the kinetic energy transfer causes small pieces of the armor to flake off on the back. This is more pertinent to tanks and other military armored vehicles, but I understand your point. I also agree that the manufacturer identifies the coating as a spall coat.
Equipment: RRA AR-15 16" barrel
Level 3 rated AR500 steel plate. I also attempted to up armor
the plate for a round that went through before.
Firing distance: from behind cover 30' away.
Test 1: standalone plate
AE 5.56 XM193 55gr FMJ- the bullet was stopped by the plate. Dimpled the back.
Test 2: standalone plate
PMC .223 Remington 55gr FMJ-BT
The bullet was stopped by the plate. No back face deformation.
Test 3, standalone plate
Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ
Complete passthrough as expected. The plate failed every standalone test against this projectile.
Test 4 Up-armored Level 3 steel plate. I cut two pieces of 1/4" Lexan to the size of a new L3 steel plate and placed them behind the steel armor. For additional measure I glued Kevlar tape to the back of the last Lexan piece.
Tested this set up twice against Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ.
Results: The bullets penetrated the steel armor plate, but the slugs *were contained* in the first piece of Lexan with one almost making it into the second Lexan layer.
I was not expecting this too work.
What was contained in the Lexan was not the bullet. It was the punched out slugs from the steel armor!
Polycarbonate/Lexan is pretty cheap, but I'm able to get pieces of it for free which made this a really cool test with interesting results.
Awesome video! Was skeptical because of the price but wanted to double check! Thanks for doing this 🔥
My level 3 ar500 steel body armor plates stopped 308 black tip amd other armor piercinf rounds. The spaldong coating perfect took many hits before it started to seperate and i paid 100 for two.
Thank you, I have 3 rigs set up with tactical scorpion, good to know that they can actually stop stuff.
People get really really mad about steel plates. But I'd rather have it than not. And if you coat the plate with duct tape it cuts down on spall even more
Great video! Simple and gets the message across. I'm in the market to buy some of these and it answered all my questions. Don't worry about the wind, it wasn't that bad.
Wearing this rig at my fireworks stand at night for this new years season. Good budget piece. I will opt for a higher end carrier and plates (more comfort) when I can afford to do so. Happy I havent had it tested yet!
Why
I got a set of 3+ plus one to test, with spall coating and it caught multiple rounds of spall.i would still buy a spall catcher.
I was able to punch holes in level 3 steel plate using Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ from an AR-15 with a *16"* barrel. Cheap and common target ammo.
I have a Colt AR15A4 20 inch barrel
What a great gun!! No recoil! And so easy to shoot! Best regards
Just ordered a set of plates, with trauma pads and a Nstar carrier for 109 shipped. Not too dang bad for a throw down
nice!
Lt. Fireguy just wondering how did the ncstar plate carriers turnout just wondering, I’m took into for a cheap plate carrier
I’d be too nervous to shoot steel at ten yards lol
Especially with your legs wide open lol
Also I’m now going to build a 20” barreled AR15 for no reason whatsoever
Put on some saftey glasses and drive on with the mission. A little small arms shrapnel won't cut you up too bad.
WOW awesome! i purchased a set of these a while back! a couple of years ago.I got them on some site that turned extremely blue shortly after my purchase and i could no longer find them on the same site. They cost me 139.99 for two plates and a good carrier. It had a full load out kit with it as well(pistol holster three AR and pistol mag pouches as well, but no cummerbund i purchased one of those later as well as side pouches for side plates which ill get some time soon.I would much rather have the build up coat but i have just the base coat set myself.Although both my plates are curved.Which i feel lucky about instead of the flat back plate.......cool!!! :) Im happy to see the plates are worth the money!
Just got this. My back plate is curved just as my chest plate is though. Just wanted some kind of protection if I have to di-di under fire if the shtf. Nice review. Mine came with four plates.
My first AR was a BCM 20 inch government upper and made A3 clone. BCM had a sale long ago and sold the standard non CHF barrel upper for super cheap many builds later it's still one of my favorites
Where i can buy one
Love these videos, didn't expect to have an armor manufacturer here in NC
I have several "setups"/grab-n-go vests. To buy top armor for every vest would be cost-prohibitive for me. This Scorpion armor will be perfect for my "backup" gear and can even be used for secondary protection. For instance, my buddy has secured plates on the back of the driver's seat in his truck. Paranoia aside, there are a lot of uses for this low budget armor.
Great vid and wonderful way for budget-minded people to be able to afford this kind of protection. You hit a home run with this one! THANKS!
Wow, I am two years late in watching this. 😆 Thanks for the video, I'm going to buy some. On a side note, I enjoy seeing the crops behind you as they grow... last video I watched, the field had nothing in it! In another one... huge tobacco plants. 👍 Take care, man!

Well unless they're running Independence M193 or the CBC stuff that is pushing over 3150-3200 fps from 16" barrel :D
I ended up choosing this exact ammo (Magtech/CBC) to stockpile for my 20" AR specifically because of your review on it! I keep a mag of their 77 grain OTM in it at the bedside as well.
Do you think you could gel test their M193 and 77 OTM? I'd be willing to donate towards it.

Awesome
Should I get this or the level 3+ lightweight version, what's the honest difference overall? How is this product and company holding up in 2022-2023? Thanks 👍
Great video! I love real world testing. Just bought a set of these.
i bought a set for my ana m2 russian plate carrier, but i do wanna get a set of level iv body armor as well, definitely can't beat prices my set of level iii plus tactical scorpion lighter than ar500 steel armor should arrive this week bought curved one for front, flat for back, and set of trauma pads, and spall guard blockers for them.
Flat for back? Better go do some pull-ups and swing a big sword/stick around to build that up. The back muscles are a critical part of maneuvering in plates.
Nice! I didn't buy these when you posted on FB for fear they for fake knockoffs at that price. Next time you post and I'm in front of my computer I'll probably order a set.
I'm sold!! AR500 wants $600 for 2 plates which is ridiculous especially when you can buy these! Thanks for the video! 👍
Truth. A small modification brings it right up there in quality(flex seal on outside)
These won't stop a 5.56 or 7.62×39. This is not the way to go. These plates are thin and don't stop any rifle round

Its funny that you say its highly unlikely anyone will be using a 20" rifle with 55gr ammo. I have a whole collection of 20" Colts 🤣😂 my main gun is a A4 Colt and all i run is hot 5.56 55gr fmj. Still love this armor though. I know that im one of the few who run the 20" master race. Now everyone is obsessed with 7.5, 10.5, 11.5 12.5 and every other sbr lenth. I too have shorties but i love the 20s the most. Glad to see this armor will stop most anyone with there modern short barrel AR
Instead of relying on elements like the small gains of muzzle energy that 4" affords you over the 16"-ers to defeat body armor, maybe a larger caliber firearm for mid to long range and armored targets as a backup at 20", a carbine 5.56, and a "SBR" ak in 7.62? Cover those bases man, all three calibers are excellent in their designed roles.
Definitely impressive for their price point. I would still get the higher end plates, but it is nice there other options to choose from if you don't want to break the bank.
Great video. I used this video as part of my decision-making process to go with Tactical Scorpion. I bought 2 level 3 plates and additionally a package with 2 level 3 plates, side plates and a plate carrier. The plates seem to be good quality and hold up well, at least, based on this video and I do think the plates are made in North Carolina.
I was very disappointed to see "Made in China" on the plate carrier as soon as I opened the package. Honestly, the carrier is pretty heavy duty and I'm sure it will hold up across the long haul BUT I would have paid more for one made in the USA. There was a note in each package stating that if we can't rate at 100% we should contact Tactical Scorpion right away. I did but I've had no response of any type for almost a week now. In the end I'm guessing this is a chinese owned company located in the U.S? Can anyone confirm/deny that??
Where did you purchase it? I see they're on eBay
Thanks or the video 🙏 cuz mine just arrived today 😁
when i saw that Paul Masson box i knew this is my type of Guy.
I bought a nice holster from them and seen they also sell body armors so I looked them up on UA-cam and here I am..
I bought a pair of these plates for $84 @tactical scorpion online.Im planning on getting kevlar back pack plates they are very light they will stop up to a 357 round I will place one behind the plate just for extra armor...

Did you say “highly unlikely to encounter” someone with a 20” AR and 55gr ammo?
It's only the most popular rifle configuration in this hemisphere lol
@@zm1786 I dont know anyone with a 20 incher
I was scratching my head at that one too
@@zm1786 The vast majority of ar's sold are 16" or shorter in pistol configurations, the 18" barrels are far less popular and the 20" barrels are even less popular than the 18" ones. At distances somewhere past 50 yards the velocities out of a 20" barrels are low enough that this plate should stop the bullet.
@@phillhuddleston9445 we've given millions of m16s to south and central American governments. It's literally the most popular rifle south of the border
I like the budget gear videos.
Good demo thanks. One thing I am curious to see is how AR500 armor fares when it's sloped 30 or 40 degrees. It should successfully deflect nearly all common rifle rounds. Although AR15 round at 3200 fps went through AR500 armor, it was significantly slowed down so second AR500 should stop it cold. Since these AR500 armors are so inexpensive another option (besides sloped armor) is to stack two and it should stop any AR15 rounds. Too heavy to be good for mobile armor, but fine for defensive setup.
That's what I was thinking 🤔 is there padding to go behind plates to soften the blow??
Some free advertising for Paul Masson Brandy! Haha
last post wasn't done and wont let me edit, so what I was saying is that it sucks to see one good shot and half of your spall is delaminated, backsplash is one thing but the surface separating is different.
I don't honestly think that this is the build up coat. Tactical scorpion says build up coat is 250 mil thick or 1/4", these are not 1/4" coat
Thanks for this review
Glad i found this video, i have the same plate. Wondered how it'd hold up.
Cool demo :)
Thanks for sharing it !
The other armor ar550 is super strong. But much more heavy.
Duly noted
I would line the front of the steel plate with a soft armor plate
The prices now lol
I got their basic IOTV type vest, two spall coated front/back plates, 2 spall coated side plates, and 4 trauma pads for like 260 on eBay back in November.

Great video. You just got a new subscriber. Greetings from Clayton N.C.
Worth it to stock up on completely
North Carolina??? I'll be waiting for the Mr beast collaboration
Steel is too heavy and spall prone for body armor, but considering the low price, it might work well for vehicle or building armor.
Love your videos! You should do a video on level 3 plates with a kevlar backer or 3a insert. See if it stops m193
