    In this video, we take an RMA Armament Level III+ plate and pit it against unrated threats including M855A1, 7,62x54R AP, and even 30/06 AP to see how well it can stand up to these threats at increased standoff ranges. Will the armor survive?

    An old man I used to know had some 30-06 "accelerator" ammo he brought back from Korea. It was 55 grain ammo out of a 30-06. I'd love to see some testing done with it because it had to be wicked fast.

      Funny enough, 55g fmj ball loaded to ~3400 fps will put a neat little hole in your ar 500 plates at close range. Considering that's a 55g 5.56 projectile your 30-06 would definitely destroy that plate.

      Granted, all my plates are metal, but this plate looks like it's an inch and a half thick on video. Very light though. Perhaps worth looking into(or would be if I didn't already have 4 plates and 3 carriets/rigs that I'll likely never need/use in an actual firefight.)

    Very interesting, with round to round minor velocity differences and minor manufacturing variations of the plate that stand off distance might vary a few yards either way shot to shot placement to placement, heck even if the angle of the plate is a few degrees tilted the apparent thickness changes minutely but all these things could go for you or maybe they could stack up the other way too.
    30-06 is an effective round in most loadings, amazing that it’s over 100 years ago that was adopted and it’s still a formidable cartridge. I have never fired one but I have heard enough stories to know they’re effective.
    Have you thought about trying a hunting round like a 444 Marlin with a soft point ? They say that at about 100 yards and under that’ll take any animal in North America. That round I have fired. Based on what some reloads can do from a 14” pistol barrel to a water jug or a disc blade it would be interesting to see what a rifle would do with a few more inches of barrel against a plate.

      @@scottlawrence1826 M855A1 stands no chance of defeating Level IV, at least from a single or at least quite a few shots evenly placed per NIJ testing. Of course in an actual engagement, if you could place 2 rounds very close to each other (inside of 2") the second one has a chance of penetrating because the ceramic strike face would be compromised by the first.
      Defeating ceramic armor is more about speed. It plays heavily into bullet construction, as well as appropriate speed. M995 AP is currently the known "king of the hill" for what I would consider armor piercing 5.56, and most level IV will stop it at NIJ distance (45') from a 22" barrel.

      @🍀Witheringexistence🍀 Because thats what level 4 is rated to stop. Level 3 is rated for 6 shots of .308. Level 4 is rated for 30-06 AP. Where’s the confusion?
      I never mentioned 308 armor piercing, as it’s also a rather uncommon threat.

    I would really like to see this test with various hunting calibers.

    • @Refrigerator_
      @Refrigerator_ 2 роки тому +5

      Why? The most common hunting rounds are 30-06, 308, 6.5 CM, 30-30, and 270. Of all of those the 30-06 has the most penetrating power due to the bullet size and barre exit velocity. If it’s capable of holding a 30-06 black tip (which is what it’s rated for), the calibers with lower Ft-Lb/energy and lower velocity will not go through
      He basically proved it by showing what it was capable of with a higher power round

      I have shot 444 Marlin through a disc used in farm equipment at about 10-15 yards in both FMJ and Hornady XTP hollow point. We shot a plow shear too and the 444 FMJ punched a golf ball sized hole through it, we found the top piece and the bottom but the rest was smithereens.
      The bullet diameter there is .429. Couldn’t penetrate the flat thick center part of the disc where the hub is but did tear 1 1/2” back the thickness of the material.
      I think some chunky hunting rounds would definitely be worth testing. I bet a 375 H&H would be tough to stop too, especially in a solid like a grand slam big game round.
      PS The other rounds we tried basically turned themselves inside out on the plow shear except the .223 FMJ made a bearing sized nick in the edge.

    @ ~ 10:50 mark, that's a large part of the reasoning behind NGSW and 6.8mm Common Cartridge: 855A1 simply poops out against even lighter armor, past c. 130 yards. And that's coming out of the 18 inch barrel; out of a 16 inch barrel, let alone 14.5 inch, the velocity would be even less.

    That M855A1 looks a lot like the Remington Bronze tip ammo of the 1970s.
    Even though the armor stopped bullet hopefully it reduces the blunt force trauma.
    Of course is a person had the Mauser setup that he has why aim for the vest when the neck on up is a softer target and thus easier to defeat the person.

    • @jth_printed_designs

      Your last statement is why I've put less importance on black tip protection. If you're using 30-06 you most likely have a scope and you'll be able to see that I have plates on. At that point, the shooter is likely going to avoid shooting the vest and just shoot my pelvis or head/neck if they are a good enough shot. I think plates should be used to protect against threats from normal fighting rifles, which really doesn't go past .308 if were being honest.
      Level 3+ is a good rating as long as it covers both m193 AND m855. Both of those rounds are too common to drop protection on one of them.

      @@blackhawk7r221 I have mine now, just waiting on the carrier. I originally was thinking of going with level 4, but it occurred to me that anyone using a 30-06 AP would likely have a quality scope and be able to see if I had plates. They would likely just assume that they are level 4 and shoot me elsewhere (the pelvis like you mentioned), so they effectively "work" against that threat on a psychological level. For my purposes a plate that works against common rounds used in common "fighting rifles" is sufficient.

    • @jth_printed_designs
      @jth_printed_designs 2 роки тому +1

      @@blackhawk7r221 Nothing wrong with having those heavy plates either, it's definitely worlds better than steel and they're multi-curve so it could definitely be worse. These new NIJ testing standards (0101.07) are going to shake up the armor industry for the "3+" category and we're probably going to see some great plates come out of it. Might be worth gritting your teeth for a couple more years with the heavy plates to see what comes out. Maybe just look for better shoulder pads in the meantime
