I actually like the pacing and the power of these decks. Both GKs and ETs have their respective audiences, but I feel that GKs follows a theme (Tribal, playing decks the person is known for, sponsored products, etc.) and ETs feel like higher power commander that isn't quite to the level of cEDH. Because the average power per deck is higher, you can assume that most people interested probably know what a large percentage of those cards do, considering that higher power = usually higher cost = usually longer time investment has been put into the game, its rules, and higher power strategies. I really like that you have the visual of the cards on the sides doing whatever the card's effects are doing, but not going in to great detail on what keywords do, why you are making that play, etc.. It just makes the game go faster and makes it feel like a good game of commander instead of a teaching experience, which is good in its own rights. Of course, misplays, missed triggers, that sort of thing happen and if nobody caught it, it really isn't that bad. Does Kyle win if he remembered a couple draw triggers? Probably not. Does JLK's position get better if he points the grisly spectacle at a non-artifact? No. In the end, this gameplay just feels like a more "normal" way of playing commander and I REALLY hope that more of these types of games, decks, and people come into being because the thought of higher-level, non cEDH (like 7-9 on power levels) decks is AWESOME. :]

TheRegisteel1234 I just looked up a ruling for it and I think they did it right, I’m not 100% sure though. It was 601.2F on what to consider commander tax if you want to check
Commander tax is an additional cost. It's not part of the card's original mana cost, which is the only thing Dream Hall's effect replaces. So, yes, DJ should have paid 2 mana in addition to discarding a card.
As someone one who plays a lot of commander I actually prefer the fast pace of extra turns. It just feels more like a group of friends playing commander than a commander show. However I can see the appeal of game knights for players new to the format (or game). Also sweet thumbnail art.

DJ, you makin' me crazy, dawg! At 22:38 you cast your commander using Dream Halls. The problem is that you had no mana to pay the commander tax, which is still due even if you don't pay its mana cost. As a general PSA: Casting a spell without paying its mana cost does not mean casting it without paying mana. 'Mana cost' in this context refers specifically to the symbols in the upper right hand corner of the card, without regard to extra costs. For example, if my commander requires me to sacrifice a creature when I cast it, that seems very intuitive that sacrificing a creature would also be due when casting without paying its mana cost. Commander tax is an extra cost in the same way as 'sac a creature'.

He's scared of the Oona deck, and if he gets stopped he'll die quickly (he's gotta burn half his tokens to get through his deck, then only has half those cards to actually play via Dream Halls, and the opponents can all use the Halls to cast removal on it if they have any more (although they probably would have already done so).
This is such an amazing show and I hope it continues! It's quick pacing mixed with the light hearted jokes gives us the feel of an accelerated home game. @@JumboCommander yeah, I'd expect the aggro player to run less board wipes. Heres to hoping you meet a new editor willing to share the workload with little to no cost so that more episodes like these gets released. Extra turns and pre-sponsored GameKnights are awesome!
Looks like some people noticed some missed triggers. But most importantly, Josh targeted Scrap Trawler with Grisly Spectacle which species nonartifact creature.

I literally went *Aaaaaw* when Josh said "Roon, you fought well", it was so cute as if he knew he was about to lose the game, this is the level of fondness for my Commander I desire to reach.
Not sure if it's been said, but when you use dream halls to cast your commander, you actually have to still pay the commander tax (and any other additional costs). It's definitely one of those things everyone misplays at first.

Great game! IMO Extra Turns is now so much better than Game Knights, I could take or leave that show but I love this one. It's probably because I already know the game, the rules and the cards, of course.
I feel just the opposite. I've been playing for years but I'm not nearly as proficient as these folks and many others. I like game knights because it's a little bit more about the people and their interactions and not just the game mechanics. Hopefully they keep making both.

I REALLY love the format of this video! It's so much quicker and more fluid. MILES better than the one where you guys freaking commentate on EVERY SINGLE CARD...
Commander Replay would shake his head at the lack of board wipes....
Sometimes you just dont draw them
I picked a deck that was more aggressive on purpose because it's fun to have a lot of interaction in these games.
@@JumboCommander yeah, I'd expect the aggro player to run less board wipes. I'm more surprised that The mill & wheel players didn't run any removal, as normally I'd expect them to be trying to board stall whilst they go off rinsing your deck. Although, I haven't taken into account Michael's comment about not seeing the whole deck. Tymna is such an awesome card, I run her with Bruce Tarl.
this was the best game i have seen so far. its given me so many ideas on how i can make new or current commander decks better. Thanks for doing what you guys do best.
Small missplay with Grisly Spectatle targeting artifact creature but still great episode!!
amazing episode, it seemed so back and forth with DJ and Kyle, I love these kind of games and was done fast enough to not miss triggers and extremely well done as always! Go DJ!!!
Excellent video! I actually really prefer Extra turns style of video over Game Knights so far! The editing is really superb. Keep them coming :-)
This episode brought back one of the reasons we love this channel. Commander gameplay! Really great episode, guests, and decks. Heres to hoping you meet a new editor willing to share the workload with little to no cost so that more episodes like these gets released. Extra turns and pre-sponsored GameKnights are awesome!
Look at that super nerd, incorporating facts into a condensed commander game
for those coming from the podcast episode the krosan grip happens at 19:04
Beat me to it! Haha
LOVE THE VIDEO ALREADY!!! I really wanted 1 or even more gameplay videos before the year ends :D
This may have been the single most epic game of Commander that I've seen on this channel! Great upload!!!
Looks like some people noticed some missed triggers. But most importantly, Josh targeted Scrap Trawler with Grisly Spectacle which species nonartifact creature.
I continue to be impressed by this type of presentaion style. Great veiwing tempo, fantastic editing, and players who understand what the producers are going for!
I literally went *Aaaaaw* when Josh said "Roon, you fought well", it was so cute as if he knew he was about to lose the game, this is the level of fondness for my Commander I desire to reach.
This new video editing setup is really good! It's fast-paced and its easy to follow along with the played cards on the side.
Not sure if it's been said, but when you use dream halls to cast your commander, you actually have to still pay the commander tax (and any other additional costs). It's definitely one of those things everyone misplays at first.
He casted Locust God from his hand since it was bounced.
@@parkerautry93 I was referring to dj recasting tymna
I like these way more than game knights because each turn isn't a full documentary!
Illegal Target with that scrap trawler and grizzly spectacle. Bad Josh!
Ep 2 is AWESOME!!! Great flow of game play, epic swingy moments, and fantastic decks.
I love how the level of play was powerful, but not turn 3 infinite combos powerful. I really
think you guys hit the sweet spot on this one.
29:28 uhh nonartifact. But well
Eh it is what it is
Buy dj the jumbo commander won so that's all that matters
@@doncon_380 also dj forgot some battleaxe triggers but well it happens
Came here looking for this.
@@thibaud1330 Also i think Ashlen forgot that last turn to put up a thopter due to the creature in her upkeep. No idea if 1 more flying blocker would have saved her but well.
32:28 - Meeting up with friends for Commander in 2020.
Damn... Kyle seems to be getting stomped in all the videos he's in lately (geek&sundry etc.). But his engine this game has been nuts. Would have liked to see more of it :p
LepraGnom any more of it and he would’ve won
For a few minutes I thought that I was just a slower player than average because I wasn't noticing the superb editing cuts to make this feel even more action-packed. Very interesting game!
29:32, isn't Scrap Trawler an illegal target since Grisly Spectacle can only target nonartifact creatures? Am I missing something?
I noticed that too. Probably just a mistake in the moment.
Great video. Wishing you keep up with this kind of content, Josh. Both Kyle's and DJ's decks were amazing to see.
Kyle's turn there was insane!
wow so good
This was great. Without a doubt, Extra Turns is the best commander content I've seen.
Kyle Hill just nets a view and a like every time. Moar Kyle plz
Yes Please! That guy is so cool!
Absolutely one of the best episodes from you all in recent months. Thank you!
EXTRA TURNS!!!!!!!!!!!!
plz more extra turns
Amazing episode! Great job, everyone! This episode demonstrates EDH/Commander at its best (certainly the best I've seen, anyway) and I was blown away several times, only being a noob Commander player myself. I was really happy to see Kyle and Ashlen return with such strong decks! I wasn't at all surprised to see DJ win, and of course he won on his first outing on The Command Zone, haha! After watching his singleton matches on MTG Arena, I knew that DJ is a great player. I look forward to more episodes, and I hope you'll someday be able to get Day[9] on either an Extra Turns episode or another episode of Game Knights. At the end of Spellslingers season 4 Sean said that he would look into learning how to play Commander, so I really hope he ends up on this channel again.
When I have money I'll absolutely support your sponsors. I love the channel, and I eagerly look forward to any and all future videos, especially the gameplay videos!
29:25 you can't target scrap trawler because grisly spectacle says non artifact creature
Kyle's last turn was epic. That was exhilarating to watch. He came out of nowhere and exploded. That said, every deck had explosive turns after that so that was really fun to watch. I still love game knights, but this is also excellent content. Thanks to Josh and everyone else on the production team.
Great game! IMO Extra Turns is now so much better than Game Knights, I could take or leave that show but I love this one. It's probably because I already know the game, the rules and the cards, of course.
same. Game knights has too much pageantry for my taste. doesn't make it bad, but this format is much more enjoyable.
yeah its better
its like old skool Game Knights
I feel just the opposite. I've been playing for years but I'm not nearly as proficient as these folks and many others. I like game knights because it's a little bit more about the people and their interactions and not just the game mechanics. Hopefully they keep making both.
@@danacoleman4007 I agree. I like extra turns but gameknights is more personal to me. I hope they keep making both
Great episode! and of course great editing, loved the die appearing on locust god, it was so smooth I had to rewind it and rewatch.
29:26 Grisly Salvage can't target a nonartifact creature though...
@@TheHutt0326 I'm aware. I just know for GameKnights they have a judge on call. Maybe not for Extra Turns.
