Great use of 3D example: MGS Snake Eater on the 3DS will use the 3D effect until Snake loses his eye in the story. The rest of the game is then locked into 2D to simulate his loss of depth perception. That’s badass integration right there.

The 3DS really nailed the 3D out of the park. Because of how non-intrusive the 3D was, it never felt like much of a hassle to use. I personally enjoyed seeing 3D remakes of older games. However, I’d pretty much only play them for 20-30 minutes since I was only playing to see how the games look in 3D. Also, did not know the Vectrex attempted 3D. Cool to know :D
Lol that sounds like you've never experienced 3D gaming on any other platform if you really think the 3ds nailed it out of "the park" Lol! You need to try it out on the ps3, many will be happy to agree that 3d gaming on ps3 was the pinnacle of the genre until more recently, the devs really put in intense effort into showing 3d incorporated into what was modern gaming at the time, coming out only a few years before the 3ds it.really brought the innovation that devs would carry onto the 3ds, and now that we have vr games all of the best of the genre are now on the oculus quest and other vr platforms, resident evil 7, medal of honor and now that absolute top, half life alyx will show you how far 3d gaming has come lol
@xg223 wdym lol, resident evil 7 came out in 2017 it’s hardly ancient. And resident evil 4 and 8 are also gonna be coming out in VR. Capcom pretty much built the new RE engine around the initial VR experience of RE 7

I always cranked that 3D slider to max on the 3DS. I hated that my friends had it turned off. 3D without glasses is just so mind blowing to me still. Haven't seen it done anywhere else
I owned my Old 3DS since 2014 and at some point you literally forget the feature is even there, but once in a blue moon i would like to turn the 3D at the lowest possible setting because it made the colors so much more lively and pop off more, specially on Majora's Mask last hours, sky looked marvelous I think another reason i never used it that much was because it decreased the framerate _just enough_ on some games to be noticeable and it was best to keep it off, although i imagine that's not a problem on a New™ 3DS
Same I always kept/keep my 3D on! I really do feel like it helped the games be more immersive to me. And now I want to get my 3DS in play it; which is literally like 8 inches from me lol.
Yeah will never forget the first time I played a 3ds i was sceptical and thought it probably won’t be very good but I was amazed I remember it was a really good effect on donkey Kong country and surprisingly well with Lego city undercover chase returns where when you claimed really high up it actually felt like there was real depth
I absoultely love how Scott can blend an epilepsy warning directly into the script. As opposed to slapping it onto the screen or title and calling it a day.
One of my favorite parts about Scott's content is that the humor is completely timeless. Most channels these days rely on memes or current trends to make jokes, which is potentially funny at the time, but it feels cheap and won't make sense after like a month. Scott's humor feels real and homemade, which is probably why his videos are so widely loved.
The jokes weren't 3D or 4D effecting our seats though they must be too weak to reach the barriers outside our screens or he was making sure it was contained. Bad joking aside. It's not always a hit but when it relates I find it better than when it's just random as sometimes it is and I don't find it landing as much. I mean I'm not laughing at Gex or the Stadia one level humour, I am the more thought out jokes that really really work. That or I'm too normalised to his humour style so I don't find it funny which I have had as a problem with sitcoms as well too so it's maybe just me. Timeless though I mean to me that means if I'm always laughing at it and I'm not laughing at every joke/skit or even the jokes that did on repeat watches compared to TV jokes I will rewatch and it always landing. Scott is good but not as good as writers that sat in a room for much shorter or longer and really makes a good sitcom. Playing Shadow Warrior 3 with reference humour some works others you can tell it's Gex or Bubsy dated or really relying on you understanding it. Nothing wrong with that but it's a challenge compyto March 2022 or before memes compared to something a lot of people are familiar with and using it well, but I think some that can apply and isn't reusing a song or something else but has broad use works really well. Like the joke about PowerPoint worked for me in its context, an old song even if I know it doesn't when shooting demons. Then again sometimes personality or situation humour works but others yeah it falls flat I find at least depends on the person. Slapstick can be a waste though depending on the depth. I agree it being homemade does work than a sitcom or other UA-camrs specific lean in to a meme or other forms of humour and Scott really does think or just have a good way of presenting jokes/speaking script or no script and that's a good thing but it's the similar way I feel about studio vs. concert with music. Sometimes it really works other times it doesn't.
That’s honestly why his raid shadow legends video is my least favourite, I still like it but one day raid shadow legends will stop being a meme sponsorship
It doesn't feel like something Scott would do, but I wonder if someone came up to him while he was trying to write a script at O'dark Thirty in the morning and said "...you're Scott the Woz. You can release a video every _month_ now, and it's gonna be #2 in trending with an assured 800k in views every, single time. Go to bed."
He's been uploading a lot to his Scott's Stash channel lately. I'm glad to have more of his content, scripted or unscripted, and I'm also glad he's maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
That sounds some futuristic shit some company will make in a 5 years and call it innovative, when it already existed but somehow failed It's a such a cool asf feature, I can't wrap my head around that it existed a decade back
@@ivandekad7249 It kind of melded two gaming novelties that just couldn't justify themselves on their own. Motion controls felt wrong when you were trying to emulate movements to an avatar on a TV. 3D couldn't do much worth the price tag and inconvenience to feel like you were looking into the box that used to be your TV. With VR the 1 to 1 movement of motion control really brings it a long way. The 3D gives you the depth perception and feeling of looking into a real place needed to carry it all the way. I agree with Scott 100 percent in that both of these gimmicks needed to go all the way to really justify the physical strain and need of space to really make them worth the extra effort over just using a controller and looking at your TV. In the medium of VR they are something incredible. It's still an inconvenience compared to just turning on your Playstation but you are getting something way beyond what gaming as we know it could ever offer you to justify that.

i've had a new 3DS since late 2015, so i never had to worry about that; as a result i never turned it off unless the game had serious framerate drops with it on some games _really_ chug when running in 3D, like pokemon X and Y and kirby planet robobot
As one of the few people in the world whose parents own a 3D TV, I am an authority on this subject and will tell you this: the added lag of 3D processing makes a lot of games worse, but Shadow of the Colossus looks really good. That's the only one I've tested that works well. And yes, I have also used it with an emulator to play Virtual Boy games as God intended.
My dad bought fully into the 3D craze, we have a 3D TV and a 3D Blu-Ray player at home. Only ever used it to watch 3D movies (alright) or automatic 2D to 3D conversion (tolerable). Never thought about Virtual Boy emulation. Now I gotta dust the thing off.
We bought into it a fair amount I had to re-buy PS3 games without 3D in the older entries (Resistance 1&2 because 3 had 3D for example) which annoyed me. But it's been interesting getting the PS2 collections mostly for the collection aspect of the games I never played and only sometimes used the 3D. Even with games I knew inside and out I didn't notice much like the Ratchet collection. 3D Land for sure I got why and it was made around it (when I bought my first 3DS in 2020 and got 3D Land in 2021) so I kept it on the entire playthrough (not second yet). Am playing through God of War Volume 2 (the PSP God of War games on PS3) with it and its alright. Nothing that useful or as impressive but I would probably play God of War 2 in Volume 1 with the statue and running on the chain to be impressed, a set piece I can see reason in it besides I think Gran Turismo games kind of helped and Killzone 3 with bots was great with it to test it out even if was probably meant for the campaign but didn't feel like replaying it. All I need is my Move controller ms to work and I'm the definition of what Sony wanted. A peripheral user. I always found the 360 games like Crysis 2 or Gears 3 with the TV doing the work to be kind of eh the same way I feel about 'change your TV brightness not the brightness in the game in some old games' when doing that while most PS3 ones building it in or Halo building it in to be better. But I can't play the 3D mode of Halo on Xbox One sadly it just misunderstands it preventing you from accessing it while I could do the Crysis and Gears way of 2D-3D like with every game not 3D compatible on other consoles or GT5 Prologue if I want to besides GT5/6 to feel super stupid about it or see if it actually made a difference with a title with the same content and not using 3D built in to see how pointless it really could be.
I'm not surprised Shadow of the Colossus managed to look genuinely good in 3D considering how high quality that games technical standards have been during each re-release of the game on every new modern console to date.
If Caddicarus can walk into a religious restaurant dressed like Christ Himself for a skit, Scott could hold a parade just to make one big joke for a video.

While the 3D was probably over hyped, the 3DS line of handheld consoles were absolutely solid. It's what kept Nintendo afloat after the WiiU flopped while they were developing the Switch, and the Switch clearly takes inspiration from the 3DS's portability factor. I'm still beating myself up for not getting a New 3DS XL before prices jumped...
We are probably in a good position as the Wii U could have had 3D but the 3DS had it instead. Wish you good luck getting a New 3DS XL whenever you can. See this is why I got a New 3DS XL in Jan 2020 before PS5/Series were going on shelves and before PS3/360/Wii/Wii U/3DS/Vita games move off them (in EB/Gamestop at least can't say for online like eBay but I assume similar may apply with new consoles making the older change things and my local game store apparently matches eBay prices but when I check it's only sometimes the case depending on how low or high they are aiming of a listing). In AU at least can't say for other regions. That and I'm new to collecting too so I caught on I think at the right time to pick up my first of those systems. I did from 2017-2020 searched whatever I could for my 2 Vitas/1 Deluxe Wii U and 1 New 3DS XL and 20 games for each. All my first systems as I missed out on them. Sure I paid $130-148 for each system so that how you will but that was in Jan 2017 for my Vita Slim $130, Wii U $148 I think Feb 2018 (every time I checked the listings it was that in EB) and as I said 3DS but for $148 Jan 2020 with my Vita OLED in 2021 for $200 with 16GB luckily in it XD. But Wii U and 3DS from EB/Gamestop and the Vitas both times form a local game store in my town (both the local one and EB in a town in the middle of no where) as that's the only place I could get one.

3D feels like a precursor to VR. People knew 3D was cool, and that it could do 'something', but the technology to do that 'something' just didn't exist for a while. Once computers became powerful enough, 3D was then able to evolve it's hook, that something that was needed to make it more than a novelty. As someone who's recently gotten a Quest 2, I can definitely say that it's evolved past being a novelty, tho I don't think it'll replace traditional games, like how 3D (graphics) games didn't replace 2D games.
I remember getting a New 3DS XL when I was a child... and I had no idea it displayed 3D images until after I got it... I actually really loved my 3DS though! Easily, one of the greatest consoles of all time! Got it for the games and stayed for the 3D... and the games.

That last sentence is probably the best implementation of a last-second plot twist I have ever seen. The foreshadowing was on point, and the whole narrative was thrown into a different context. Genius.
The Nintendo 3DS was great for its time. The concept of a 3D DS itself was enough to excite people, but I feel like we overestimated what it would feel like.
The concept of 2 players seeing separate things at the same time without two adjacent displays is actually a pretty fascinating idea, I want to know how it works, and that feature without the 3D, could be pretty cook to see in the future without todays big VR headsets that work, but I want to try that out and personally see if it actually looks like a totally different display, or if I can see parts of the other display.
Polarized glasses have two different poles, one for each eye, the split play was just making both eyes of one player first polarization and second player the other instead
@@TurtleKwitty I haven't done research, but didn't the glasses use that flickering technique? I still use the 3DS as a stereoscopic platform. You can easily create 3d images in Paint or programs of the like by making two images: First you make the initial (left) image then make a copy of it which becomes the right image and edit it by moving a few pixels to the right the objects that should appear farther in the screen, then move a few pixels to the left the objects that should pop out of the screen and objects that should stay at screen flat level are left untouched. Then there rs free software to merge both images and create the mpo file, you put that file in your 3ds, watch it with the camera app and voila! the effect is pretty cool.
Honestly, Fire Emblem Awakening looks incredible with the 3D on, the maps feel like you're playing with one of these fold out picture books and the different camera angles let you have some variety in how you'd want battle to feel.
I can't remember if it's better than FEAwakening (I haven't played nearly as much FEA), but FEEchoes:SoV's 3D did a great job of giving the maps depth, so mountains were actually mountains with depth instead of just different colored areas, and, while not as good as Ocarina of Time 3D/Majora's Mask 3D, the 3D was pretty nice in the 3D dungeon areas.
The 3D feature was definitely best utilized in Super Mario 3D Land. When I recently played 3D World on the Switch it was so much more difficult to land jumps as precisely as I could in 3D Land with the 3D turned on.
True but in terms of overall tech that "Simulview" idea is the best application BY FAR. I could easily see people buying one of those TVs just for that feature.

I still think Virtual Boy games should’ve had Virtual Console releases on the 3DS, especially considering both systems used the same technology. It would’ve been great to essentially archive Nintendo’s failed step into 3D in a way that would let the masses experience the 3D effects.
Completely agree it should have happened. Besides they could have changes the colour instead of red or gone further like the Gameboy (I know it isn't the same but I mean they could have done something to expand on it they did 3D Classics). Though would they say 'no don't pirate it' but they really don't want to do anything with it more than any other platform.
yeah, old nintendo consoles are notorious for being nearly impossible to break to the point that people joke about them being Made of an elusive material known as Nintendium. You just can't break one unless you're actually putting a lot of effort into it. Case and point, that one charred gameboy that survived a fucking explosion and works perfectly well to this day. The only thing they had to replace was the screen because that was charred beyond repair, but to this day, none of the internals have even been touched and the thing is still on display at Nintendo's HQ playing tetris. Generally speaking though, the quality for the handhelds starts to degrade by the time you get to the DS. Let's just say that hinge is a pretty big weakspot. As for the switch, while the console itself does live up to the Made of Nintendium moniker, the joy-cons are absolute dogshit in that regard.
I happened to have my 3DS with me on vacation last week, when I was visiting a waterfall and canyon in Iceland. I hate how 2D pictures of canyons look, they all just look like ditches, never as impressive as in person, so I tried taking some 3D pictures and they were pretty decent. Even with the low resolution camera, for this subject just having some depth was way more impactful.

From what I understand, the famicom 3D system also requires a crt to even work properly.
I like your videos :)
@xg223 what? PSVR 2 hardware isn’t out which is why all PS5 VR titles are slated for next year lol
@xg223 yeah and the psvr 2 is exclusive to the PS5, what's your point lol
I like the idea of these more spaced out video releases. Helps Scott flex his creative muscle some more and make each episode feel like an event.

Yeah! I bought a new3DS XL second hand and it's so cool with the face tracking!
I owned my Old 3DS since 2014 and at some point you literally forget the feature is even there, but once in a blue moon i would like to turn the 3D at the lowest possible setting because it made the colors so much more lively and pop off more, specially on Majora's Mask last hours, sky looked marvelous
I think another reason i never used it that much was because it decreased the framerate _just enough_ on some games to be noticeable and it was best to keep it off, although i imagine that's not a problem on a New™ 3DS
Same I always kept/keep my 3D on! I really do feel like it helped the games be more immersive to me. And now I want to get my 3DS in play it; which is literally like 8 inches from me lol.

The way Scott switches from storytelling and explaining to quite literally some of the BEST humor in this platform... is very addictive.
One of the best formulas ever implemented on UA-cam
I absoultely love how Scott can blend an epilepsy warning directly into the script. As opposed to slapping it onto the screen or title and calling it a day.
One of my favorite parts about Scott's content is that the humor is completely timeless. Most channels these days rely on memes or current trends to make jokes, which is potentially funny at the time, but it feels cheap and won't make sense after like a month. Scott's humor feels real and homemade, which is probably why his videos are so widely loved.
TIMELESS!? Just wait until 3d screens become a thing again.
Jokes aside, i now want a phone with a screen like the 3ds
@@bazookasniper5167 Wasn't 3d not included on the touch screen because finger smudges would mess it up?
If there is one thing we know about Scott, he doesn't follow the trends.

I mean there’s a few on the PS4 that get talked about and of course, Half-Life Alyx. Just no true must-have system seller.
It's still an inconvenience compared to just turning on your Playstation but you are getting something way beyond what gaming as we know it could ever offer you to justify that.

some games _really_ chug when running in 3D, like pokemon X and Y and kirby planet robobot
@@ambozz3726 there is a really good emulator for virtual boy you can sideload on to an Oculus Quest.
You say that as if God intended the Virtual Boy.
I'm not surprised Shadow of the Colossus managed to look genuinely good in 3D considering how high quality that games technical standards have been during each re-release of the game on every new modern console to date.

I’m assuming Fates and Echoes also have the same effect.
Agreed. This is the only game I'd use the 3d on. And only a quarter to halfway in intensity.

Though would they say 'no don't pirate it' but they really don't want to do anything with it more than any other platform.
It got hacked on, but yeah it would've been cool if Nintendo did it themselves.

Sorry I’m late! I just filled out my application.
I'm here!
10:45 "Not without surgery."
"...for Mario Clash???"
If these longer gaps between episodes means we get more bangers like this one, I'm all for it
I love how when Scott hit the GameCube with a hammer, it didn't even get scratched.
They just don't make 'em like they used to.
yeah, old nintendo consoles are notorious for being nearly impossible to break to the point that people joke about them being Made of an elusive material known as Nintendium.
@@exyzt9877 I can very much attest to the DS and DS Lite's lack of durability.
@@CrocvsGator I think they might've ran out of Nintendium by then.
@@exyzt9877 nah, the Wii U Gamepad and Pro Controller are hewn from solid chunks of the stuff

HIS EXPRESSION AT 11:00 KILLED ME

That's probably my favourite joke this episode
I happened to have my 3DS with me on vacation last week, when I was visiting a waterfall and canyon in Iceland. I hate how 2D pictures of canyons look, they all just look like ditches, never as impressive as in person, so I tried taking some 3D pictures and they were pretty decent. Even with the low resolution camera, for this subject just having some depth was way more impactful.
Ooo interesting!!! i completely forgot u could take 3d pictures with it. i loved playing with the camera all the time
At 0:24 Scott got more of my respect for using the Glee 3D concert poster as the definition of 2010 3D entertainment........mainly because I own the DVD copy
Man, as someone who’s medically depressed, I love your videos and help me get past the hard times! Thank you for your funny videos!
I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before. Crazy how much history there was to 3d gaming.
Count yourself lucky you've never attempted to use a virtual boy. It's painful and not metaphorically.
It seems that it's a "gimmick" every 8 years. A gimmick dies off once and that's it. Meaning it's not a gimmick, it's just niche
@@horacegentleman3296 well I *had* heard about that one. A lot of the others were obscure tho
Shout out to shovel knight on 3ds, the 3d effect was excellent.
I remember when Nintendo was talking about having a 3d video store for the 3ds, partnered with universal studios. That never came to fruition
I’ve alway’s really loved 3D. I actually remember my grandma taking me to see “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in an imax, and it was the first 3D movie I remember seeing, a whole year before Avatar and it blew my mind, and we had a nice LG cinema 3DTV with the passive glasses ( no charging ). The games would indeed cut resolution, but movies looked really nice on it.
Getting a new Scott the Woz video at the end of a long work week is an amazing gift.
another banger. wild how consistent scott is, no matter what the topic is.
Congrats Scott, you just became the only youtuber I voluntarily "remembered to hit that bell button" for just now.
Initially I was disappointed by the choice to cut out weekly uploads - but with the quality of content he’s been able to produce with more time, I’m a changed man. Plus enjoy your life Scott! I’m happy you have the time to entertain so many of us
2:28 The next 10 secs had me stuck and laughing! You comedic timing and execution is great Scott! Thanks
The fact Scott mentioned the Vetrex gives me hope that he’ll cover the Amiga some day.
I never knew what a Vetrex was until this video, so I don’t doubt he’ll at least MENTION the Amiga.

Hi Scott, Stain here.
I wanna let you know that you are WAY UP THERE on my list of very favorite skit bombers and content creators ever.
I’ve been around for quite some time and you have kept the level of love put into your videos and skits as awesome as it was in the beginning.
Thanks for all the work you’re done. Made a huge part of my youth enjoyable.

13:06 finally Scott talks about one of my favorite 3D platformers
Hearing Scott talk about Sly Cooper honestly made my day even if it was for like 10 seconds and had nothing to do with the actual games
Funny how Scott just posts… whenever the hell he wants now. Honestly good for him. Sounds way less stressful.
10:49 I love how he completely forgets that you can just close one eye
to be fair, I *also* forgot that closing just 1 eye is possible, and didn't remember it until I saw your comment, sooo...
yeah, sleep deprivation is *dangerous*, kids. Get enough sleep, and you can avoid the shame of forgetting what winking is.
I can’t wink
Okay who said you had to wink, you need the one eye to be a constant thing, and if you can’t hold one eye shut there’s always duct tape

1:00 ah yes the 3DS. The console i turned the 3D on maybe all of 3 times over the course of a decade and then left it permanently in the off position. Such a great gimmick/s
i cannot sit here and be lectured about 3D gaming, let alone the third dimension, by a man who has given me ABSOLUTELY ZERO concrete proof that he himself is not 2D. i felt more at home when scott spoke about subjects he has DIRECT personal experience with (virginity, donkey kong barrel blast, madden 08 etc).
There are eyewitness that agree he is in the third dimension, so

Well as a rappresenter of the metal gear fandom, i can say that we are happy to hear that scott talked about a metal gear game for more than 8 seconds
Actually shocked you didn't end the video talking about nintendo's labo 3D thing they tried.
If you’re talking about the labo vr that would probably be more fitting for like a Vr Gaming video
@@SapientialPogonophobic i mean...he talked about Playstation vr briefly as well as the virtual boy and they are basically the same thing

As good as ever. Ideally, one of these at this level a month would keep me happy as an audience member. Keep up the excellent work.
I still always use my 3DS with 3D on to this day. It's such an immersive effect.
the bits here are so high quality, genuine massive quality increase, great work! The doctor bit with mario clash was so damn funny to me
Scott is honestly my cure to depression. He’s so effortlessly and flawlessly funny without relying on memes or trends, honestly the best creator I’ve ever watched. Thank you Scott for making me laugh!!
I am one of those weirdos who really loves 3d. I always have it on with my 3ds and play PC games in 3d on my 3DTV or VR headset. I like to watch sports with the 3D converter on too. Anyhow, it's not for most people but I'm glad whenever it becomes a fad again because it's not a fad for me.
16:08 A Scott The Woz video is the last place I expected to see Foil Arms & Hog, but here we are
I've still got my 3DS, and I still enjoy the 3D features now and again.
The obvious one is Super Mario 3D Land, but also 2 of the Professor Layton Games and the crossover with Phoenix Wright.
The exploration looks really good and helps the world feel much bigger. Plus it helped the puzzles feel fresh and innovative to the other 4 games before it. The only thing that never looked right to me was the pointing when you got a puzzle right.
