However, one of my favorite images is that last scene of Elvis on the plane where go transitions from waving 'bye' to Priscilla and turns and smiles/waves to the fans who were there the whole time. Maybe it was on purpose, maybe it's me overthinking things. But I found it another example they used to prove Parker's point.

Unfortunately it was probably just normal back than and so they didn’t care. How Elvis kept going for 4 or 5 years on that deal is inhuman. Please correct me if I have the years wrong.

6:23 I don't think they'd seen that many singers who moved their legs and hips like that. But what's basically happening in this scene is that they're discovering that they have hormones and it's driving them crazy. Don't forget this was in a time when sex wasn't really talked about, especially not with teenage girls.

Yay, another person has done a reaction to this movie finally!
Essentially, Austin Butler did all his own singing for the 50's on up until the 68 Come Back Special stage performances, and then he was dubbed with Elvis's actual voice from the special, same with all the 1970's concert performances. Save for the times when Elvis was singing more casually/off stage, which were still Austin.
The whole carnival setting with the mirror maze ferris wheel was all for the movie, yeah. Just kind of a carni-villain moment for Parker to build tension.
The whole thing in 1958 where they threatened to arrest him did actually happen, but they didn't actually end up doing so. It was essentially on public indecency charges, I think, and maybe for inciting chaos. The one time he did get arrested is when he got into a fight with some guys in the audience at a different time.
As for Priscilla - yeah, they kind of skimmed a lot of their early history, but they didn't /actually/ get together in a formal sense when she was that young. They spent time together while he was in Germany, stayed in touch, then she came to visit him for Christmas a few years later. All of that time he was still seeing other women, etc. Then she convinced her parents to let her stay in Memphis with Elvis' parents when she turned 18 or 19, though most of that time he was away, back and forth, in Hollywood though that is the time period they were more or less dating so they were mostly long distance, and according to her book they were rarely given a lot of time together. They got married when she was about 22. Frowned upon and bizarre, especially now, but in the south in the 50s/60s not an unusual situation.
He did actually have to dodge around the Colonel when planning his Comeback Special, it was intended to be a Christmas special but he literally had one guy who's whole job was just to keep Parker occupied so he wouldn't interfere lol. I think they got into some kind of prank war.
The sad and unfortunate thing with Elvis and all the drugs he was on, is that not a single one of them was illegal. He was a victim of what would now be considered horrendous medical abuse in terms of just being over-prescribed medications, that were just exascerbating existing medical issues he had to the point that he was apparently on the verge of mass organ failure. They skimmed over his last few years of life, but his last couple of girlfriends after he and Priscilla separated have gone on record about how often he had to be hospitalized.
He wasn't totally alienated from his daughter, as it kind of insinuates though - she was actually at the house with him when he passed.

Excellent points. I don't mind the fact they didn't go over the 2 girlfriends because the movie wasn't about them; it was really about his careers and you would need another hour to introduce them and have any time with them. And I rather that hour be used on things other than the woman/family who sued him after his death for money.
the MOST intriguing part of the movie for me was the Comeback Special. I really didn't know much about it. Never even heard 'IF I can Dream' so I thought it was really interesting seeing all the behind the stage stuff. Then to read up on it later and find out that history was even stranger than fiction for this show it makes me want a whole 2 hour movie just on that production, haha.
Overall, it was a fantastic movie. I am still finding new things to focus on every time I see it. You'd need a trilogy just to get through everything in this man's life so what they were able to accomplish with a 2.45 hour movie is fantastic.

7:20 The point of the modern music in this movie is the same as the point of the modern music in 'Moulin Rouge' and 'The Great Gatsby', to show us that while it may seem safe and twee to us now, then that music (jazz, Elvis, the can-can) was all new, exciting and risqué sounding to the people then, same as how our new music sounds to us now. It's to help us understand what it was like then, as well as being a bit of a 'the more things chance the more they stay the same'.

@@willietarkington1628 I felt the same at first but the more I watched the movie the more I liked it. My favorite use of it is the Beale Street scene with Elvis in the car. There is no song from 1956 that would have been able to exude the emotion Elvis was feeling at that moment. The stress, the frustration, the anger, feeling trapped....every song on the radio was one of his songs so that transition from Elvis songs to that opening 'Tiger Man' riff was absolutely perfect to me. Then the Beale St. scene where everyone was going up to him; the staging along with the song made him look like a Boss. Again, looking back at the songs and thinking about Elvis's music because everything in the film was based off his songs, there wasn't anything harder that would have worked as good.

  • @actualkarenokboomer3158

RCA didn't drop him, but you really need to read some biographies. They had control of his music. The Colonel signed over a lot of rights. At Elvis' funeral the Parker was trying to get Elvis' dad to sign more power over. Elvis was an exceptionally generous person. He was really a religious person and believed God gave him money to do things for others. Everyone one of his friends and most of his family became jealous of how much he was giving other people.

Loved your review. Thanks for doing this.
I am not sure if you notice something in the last scene as you did not mention it. Austin Butler morphed into the real Elvis. That’s when I started crying my eyes out. When I watched the movie the second time, I realized that there is original concert footage cut throughout the movie.
Things to note: ( I number these so it would be easier to read.) just for reference, I was born in 1958.
    1. The age difference was not an unusual thing in Elvis’ time especially in the south. For example, in Mississippi the legal age of marriage with parent consent was 13 at that time. Which is repugnant now. (As it should be. ) It was different 62 years ago. Her parents were complicit in the situation.
    2. In the 1970’s Elvis sang Love Me Tender in every concert. I say sing, but the only purpose of the song was to kiss every women in the front row. ( watch the UA-cam video of that song.) I don’t think Priscilla was jealous of that. I think it was the handpicking of those women to take to his suite and have sex. That is what pissed her off.
    3. The 1950’s was a very sexually repressed time in the US. Sex was not talked about. Especially for women. The belief was girls did not need to know about sex until they were married and then their husbands would teach them. Basically, Elvis elicited feelings that a young should not be having. Elvis was a threat to society both sexually and socially. Teenagers needed to rebel and Elvis was perfect for that. Elvis was banned on some radio stations. DJs that defied that rule were often fired.
    4. Elvis would not have been able to pay off the bill the colonel presented to him. He was known for spending massive amount of money. It was pretty common for him to impulsively buy 15 Cadillacs at one time to give out to friends or workers. Once, a women he did not know was passing buy when he was on a spending spree and admired the Cadillac. He just told the salesman to give her one! The same thing happened with jewelry, motorcycles, etc. His dad handled his personal finances. He only had an 8th grade education. Elvis payed massive amount of federal and state taxes as his dad had no idea how to set up tax shelters or investments. Considering how much money he made in his lifetime, the estate upon his death was little.
    5. By all accounts, Elvis hated direct confrontation which explains a lot when it comes to the colonel. I think the colonel was instrumental in moving him from being a regional star to a national one, but he should have kicked him to the curb soon after he got back from the army.
Looking forward to watching another of your videos.

VERY true!! It was extraordinarily common for 15 and certainly 16yo girls to wed in the South then & the 10yr age difference would not have been seen as vast by any stretch. Actually, I think Austin & his current gf have that same age dif lol Of course- neither are legally underage. Nor were Priscilla or Elvis at that time. One simply cannot judge historical figures in any genre or subject through today’s morality lens. What is important is Has the view changed? And yes- it has, thankfully!
My goodness- I had no idea some ppl actually accused/believed Elvis ‘stole’ dance moves from disabled children🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ That’s a scene, a comedic relief scene, in a fictional film. Stunned. And Elvis sang what he was influenced by. If he ‘stole’, then any rapper who’s ever sampled a song is a thief. Equally absurd.
The Black woman who cooked for him at Graceland for 11years- he bought her jewelry, multiple cars, and a HOUSE!
For anyone who’s not seen it, the minidoc (14mins) ‘Elvis and The Black Community: That Echo Will Never Die’ is well worth the watch!
      Stay safe & love much💖

BUT his signature move actually was started by Nina Mae McKinney and did the move in her debut movie “Hallelujah 1929”. And they screamed that way when Elvis moved because it wasn’t known for white artists to do that since that was something black artists had already been doing during that time. That’s why some black musicians was okay because he was putting their type of music to the front but today many ppl see it as stealing. Especially since alot of ppl don’t know how copyright laws were very strict for black artists than it was for white artists of that time. But overall, I think it was a good starter movie for those including myself who didn’t know anything about Elvis. Definitely believe his death was in the hands of the Colonel

I feel bad that you were so confused throughout the movie and missed out on so many things and metaphors. 1) During that scene where Elvis was singing Trouble - he could NOT hear the racist guy speak. In the beginning of that scene, Tom Parker said that at the same time of this event, 3 MILES away, that racist rally was happening. So, Elvis was NOT able to hear someone 3 miles away nor were they able to hear Elvis. It was basically a metaphor for down the street evil is being preached and it is acceptable; meanwhile, the same assholes are calling Elvis evil and unacceptable. That is why the song Trouble was used in that scene - even though in real life, that song was recorded later than that. "I'm evil" was part of the lyrics. That was brilliant! 2) When Elvis said Parker was an "alien". He did not mean from another planet. In America, if you are illegally in the country, you are referred to as an: Illegal Alien. 3) Back in the 40's, 50's and 60's in America, segregation laws were strict and unreasonable (especially in the South - where Elvis was). Yes, Elvis could have possibly been arrested or even worse for acting "non-white". It was a stupid time.

People (45 years after he's gone) still call Elvis King of Rock'n roll, but he did not like that, he considerd that the only King was God, but I consider him to be the King of Music, but what do you think, is he good enough to be called a Music King?
Here are some of his Gospel songs:
Amazing Graze, Take me home precisous Lord, How great though art, You'll never walk alone, You gave me a mountin, Crying in the chapel, Why me Lord (written by Kris Kristofferson), Unchained melody, I'm not sure if it's a gospel song but Walk a mile in my shoes and many more...
    .
If you prefer ballad songs then look at these:
My Way, Suspicius minds, In the Ghetto (written by Mac Davies), Memories (written by Mac Davies), If I can dream that is a tribute (parts of it is taken directly from the I can dream speach by MLK) to Martin Luther King JR and senator Robert Kennedy, What now my love, Walk a mile in my shoes (listen to the words in the beginning), Make The World Go Away, Bridge Over Troubled Water, An American Thrillergy, Hurt, Sweet Caroline, Just Pretend, What now my love, Are you lonesome tonight (laughing versin, or not), Oh Danny Boy (for you Irish people) remember that he sang over 700 songs...
There are some videos of when Elvis joking and messing up, he loved to joke around and pretend that he did not have control, but he had total control, he acctually conducted his musicans and back up choirs all the time !!
He is the only person to have 2 records gone to sell Gold and 2 to to sell Platinum since he died.
Elvis is also in almost every genre of Music Hall of Fame (5 that I'm sure of), no one else is in more then perhaps 2.
Not bad for someone who never took a single singing lesson, yes he sang in church so perhaps he learned a little there, right?
    .
Something else that people tend to overlook:
He always conducts his musicans and backup singers, he never gets credit for being able to do that...
Then imagen you are a singer, you have great musicans, you have great backup singers, no Guest Artists, no Autotune, no Lipsinging and no Fireworks, now all is about your skill, could you handle that pressure?
That is what Elvis did in over 1000 concerts, despite having problems with his health, like his Glaucoma, the headlights must have hurt his eyes like crazy...
He sang over 700 songs, I wonder how he could remember them all, he never vrote a song himself, so he had to remember other peoples songs, well that in it self is amazing in it self...
By the way he had Glucomea and that must have been difficult being in the headlights all the time, that could be why he sometimes closes his eyes, but also sometimes squinting !!
Elvis suits was made of 100% Polyester, or 100 cotton (I'm not sure witch one), it was originally a karate suit, it was very light, but it was hot, so it made him sweat a lot, he got some bad press about that, but if you give it all then you will sweat, it should be positive, right?
About the deep basevoice JD Sumner (a member of The Stamps Quartet) is the Basso Profundo, I think that it's called that, it is the deepest base singer there is...
About him helping others, look at this: ua-cam.com/video/CrJ1c9tm-C0/v-deo.html
Elvis made a show where all the money went to build the Memorial after Pearl Harbour, He talked to the nations about taking the Poliovaccin, Elvis took the first injection himself and he helped to start St Jude hospital against cancer, he also gave away juwelery, gave away cars, gave away houses to total strangers...
He also have a own organisation that helps people get out of Homelessness...
A thing that perhaps you did not know: Elvis NEVER had a show OUTSIDE OF USA, NOT EVEN 1 !!!
Video of Mohammad Ali speech after Elvis died:
    ua-cam.com/video/PO8Kq_3KTyI/v-deo.html
I have to say that I loved being at Graceland and seeing his home, first we were at the house in Tupelo where he lived in his early years, he was born there!!!
I don't regret for a second that I was there, or that I stood at his grave site and said out loud that this is for the humanitarian Elvis/person/man and then I gave him a military salute, the others there just looked at me and asked if I didn't like his music.
So I told them that he was clearly one of the best singers and artists ever, but I loved his big heart more, he helped so many people without getting credit for it, he didn't want the credit of helping others, he did it out of love and respect…

Elvis' each had less than a 5th grade education. Most believe the Colonel had killed a woman the week he left Europe. He also was always trying to disguise where he was from and had unusual accents. Pricilla talked about how charming Parker would be, but a conman has to be charming or he can't get the jobdone.

He did If I can dream that was a tribute to Martin Luther King JR that got killed that year, it is also a tribute to Bobby Kennedy (not the president JFK he got shot in 1963) that got killed then to (1968), the manager did not like Elvis ending the show with If I Can Dream insted of a christmas song, but it went to become a MONSTERHIT
Elvis never knew about the false name that Parker had, so that is in there to make the movie better, that came out 4 years after Elvis died and shocked everyone, that is why Elvis never toured outside of USA...

3:13 If you want another good one there's 'De-Lovely' starring Kevin Kline about composer and lyricist Cole Porter and his wife Linda - he wrote some of the best lyrics of last century.
There's also a 2008 movie called 'Cadillac Records' about the blues (and early rock and roll) artists of Chess Records including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Willie Dixon.

Contributing to the delinquency of minors. I had a friend that in 1967 he was married to a black women and he got arrested for holding her hand on the street in Mississippi.

The police man in the car told Elvis as they were driving to the stage that he'd be fine so long as he "didn't wiggle a finger." So, Elvis did exactly the opposite. He stuck his hand up, and wiggled a finger while dead looking the man in the eyes.
      AHHHH I love it.

This Elvis movie is NOT a biopic because although it is sold as a movie about the relation between Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, and Elvis it also touches on his personal life. And that is where a lot is wrong because it is totally biased in favor of his EX wife Priscilla Beaulieu who, unfortunately, is becoming more and more known as Elvis' wife, not the ex, which can make new fans assume that she is his widow.
It might sound great to many that Priscilla gave the movie her blessing. But the fact remains that she has changed a lot of Elvis history to suit her story. I'm sure he loved her for some of the time they knew each other, but in reality, she barely spent any time alone with him. They met in September 1959 in Germany and he returned to the US in March of 1960. Then they did not have any contact until 1962, the year of her first visit to him in Memphis, from where they (which included his entire entourage) traveled to Las Vegas. She was 17 then (born May 24, 1945). In December she visited again, for Christmas. In 1963 she first moved in with Elvis' father Vernon and stepmother Dee, but after a while she moved into the main house. During these years, Elvis was away from Memphis a lot, making 3 movies a year in Hollywood or locations such as Hawaii. And during all these years he was also still seeing other women. Priscilla herself said multiple times they were hardly ever alone.
According to Priscilla, Elvis had promised to marry her when she was 21. But as her birthday had come and gone and her 22nd birthday was approaching and Elvis still had not kept his word, Priscilla, her parents and the colonel (Tom Parker) visited Elvis on a movie set. Nobody knows what really happened there, except that some time during that visit, Elvis had a mysterious fall in the bathroom. All of a sudden everything escalated and a quick wedding ceremony was arranged on May 1, 1967 (23 days before Priscilla's 22nd birthday) in Las Vegas. The strange thing about that was not just the timing, but also that many people who were close to Elvis were contacted by Parker's people to not attend the wedding.
The whole ceremony took just a few minutes and afterwards they were ushered into a room for a press conference (listen to what the memphis mafia guys say about them getting married at the 24:33 mark of ua-cam.com/video/p8blOqK90PM/v-deo.html). You can hear what Elvis told about the wedding in the recording of the last phone conversation Red West had with him before he died "That wedding thing, that wedding thing. It was in there over and done with so quick. I didn't realize I was married." (ua-cam.com/video/p8blOqK90PM/v-deo.html).
Priscilla soon became pregnant, but halfway through her pregnancy, Elvis already wanted to divorce her. 9 months after the wedding, daughter Lisa Marie was born, after which there was almost no physical relationship between Elvis and Priscilla. By then the 1968 Comeback Special had given a new impulse to his career and from 1969 on he was away from Memphis touring the US for an average of 200 days a year. Both Elvis and Priscilla had affairs during their short marriage. They separated in February of 1972 when Priscilla and Lisa moved to California and Elvis remained in Memphis. He filed for divorce on his 38th birthday, January 8, 1973. The divorce was finalized in October of 1973. Priscilla rejected the name Presley and returned to her maiden name Beaulieu after the divorce, stating she wanted to be her own person. She even started a business under that name. But after Elvis died, she soon changed her name to Beaulieu-Presley and some time after that she dropped her maiden name and started calling herself Presley again.
She had several relationships after her divorce. In 1984 she met Marco Garibaldi with whom she had a relationship for 21 years. They separated in 2006. Together they had a son, Navarone, in 1987. She never married Garibaldi, although she had a much longer relationship with him than she'd had with Elvis, possibly because she wanted to hang on to the Presley name. Interesting detail is that Elvis did not mention Priscilla at all in his will; not even as guardian of his only child, Lisa Marie.
Elvis' cousin Billy Smith and his wife Jo have already said that so many things are not right as far as things concerning Priscilla are concerned. Linda Thompson is right: i.postimg.cc/hjYL9bkt/linda-thompson.jpg and Elvis' bassist from the TCB band, Jerry Scheff, doesn't hold back and tells it like it is: i.postimg.cc/FK2GdjDc/Jerry-Scheff-Elvis-movie-comment.jpg.
Elvis was born in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

This is the problem I have with Priscilla. She chose to leave him, but changed her name back to his after his death? My guess is too make money, and fame off of having his last name again.
Like fairplay to her for reviving Graceland ig, but a part of me will always assume she's dine it for money simply bc of the fact she left him but took up his name again after he'd died. Aswell as, no where in the film did it show that she also cheated on him, why? Probably bc she requested it not to be in there to save face.
