  • The Motorcycle Song
words and music by Arlo Guthrie
    CHORUS:
    I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorsickle
    And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorsickle
And I don't want to die
I just want to ride on my motorcy...cle
It was late last night the other day
I thought I'd go up and see Ray
So l went up and I saw Ray
There was only one thing Ray could say, was:
    CHORUS
Just last week I was on my bike
I run into a friend named Mike
Run into my friend named Mike
Mike no longer has a bike. He cries:
    CHORUS

I'm 70 now... been singing that song on my motor cyc-le since I come home from 'Nam and bought my first real scooter. My dog sings it with me sometimes. Added a verse.. I don't want to play my fiddle... I just want to ride my motor cyc-le. If you are still alive stay safe and see you on the other side.

My father has sung this song to me and my siblings since I was a infant. He’s gotten away with singing it for over 30 years

I was at this event. It was a benefit for the Worthington (Massachusetts) Health Care Center. Guest included Steve Goodman, who was great. I shot 4 rolls of film (I'm in the brown shirt center stage, ground level) that day. I was a junior in high school from Chicopee, Mass., looking to get into a photo journalism career, and attend a college like Hampshire, or the New York School of Arts, ... not to forget Suffolk University in Boston. I like so many of this period, didn't see it materialize. I'll be 64 years old in 6 months, ... have a factory job, trying to find a way I can semi retire early. The one thing I DO HAVE after all these years, are the negatives, all 136 frames I shot that day, in B&W with my 35mm Nikkormat camera. All are in mint condition, in my present darkroom. So are the best laid plans of mice and men. For those of you who have a desire to venture, go for it. Go for it and accomplish your desire> Don't turn into a somewhat old man with regrets, looking for old memories on You-Tube!Peace to you all.

I'm glad Arlo decided to expound on the significance of the pickle. It really puts the whole song into context.

This was my grandfather’s favourite song. He would blast it on his old record player! Every time I think of him I play this song. I just love it! Now I play it to my kids.

I remember before helmets just swinging a leg over my Honda and going. My long hair blew back like a wind sock and I wore cheap sunglasses. The road curved uphill around the reservoir and i leaned into it. I parked by the dam and smoked a joint while the bike ticked and clicked cooling off.

I am 63. Fourty years ago I was on a dangerous hike in the Himalayas silly enough during the monsun season. On my way an American from Atlanta Georgia joined me. Trying to get back Alice we kept on sinnig a changed Version of Arlos song: ".... I dont wanna die, I just want to keep my feet dry...." The Song kept us in a good mood to get through all hardship... thank you Arlo, 40 years later...

My dad used to sing this to me when I was little. Now I sing it and play this video for my baby boy who just turned a month old. No matter how cranky he is this song calms him down.

I started listing to Arlo's songs from the beginning. Now here I am 66 years old and your still playing your songs like it was yesterday. If people could understand what your singing about. All those years ago and your still hanging in with the best of them.

Arlo was one of my late father’s favourite musicians. My dad also rode motorcycles. He would take me and my sister for rides on the back of his bike. He introduced us to this song when we were little kids, in the late seventies. We both got our love of motorcycles and Arlo from our dad. This song and the story make me laugh every time!
