Glad to see you’re out and about! The countryside you explore is so beautiful. Tip: there is empirical evidence to prove that the vibration from motorcycle handlebars destroy cellphones. I have removed my cellphone brackets from my bikes and bought a Garmin Zumo XT motorcycle GPS instead. Additionally, I also have an Inmarsat satellite phone just in case I ever find myself out of cellphone range. Greetings from Sacramento. 😊 Edit: Since you’re also an aficionado of old school methods, be sure to include a compass in your kit.
Amazing. Dinty Moore Stew is still with us. That was my go-to on a 3 month trip in the early 70’s through México to Guatemala in a ‘66 VW Westfalia bus. Great memories!
Hey thank you for doing these videos that you comically call senior moments you remind me of a friend of mine who is New Zealand's current over 70s mountain bike world champion he's out there doing it you wouldn't even guess he was over 70 well done I enjoy your videos good fun not quite where you are in age but not that far off oh and I love my ADV 390 lots of love from New Zealand
You're a great person and a motobiker...I'm about the same age, 72 years old, and I watch every video of yours...I'm from Slovakia...so I like videos from the USA and specifically yours...keep it up Diz
Hay Neighbor ! what are you doing camping in my back yard ? LOL I've never been to Medicine lake yet... you beat me ! and I think that KTM 390 is a better bike for you ! it's good to see you up and putting around on the bike again after the Broken leg ! in fact I think your getting around better than I do ! GOOD FOR YOU !!!! we should meet up for a ride together some day.... like next summer as it's too cold for me now if I knew where you lived I'ed come visit you ! but alas i don't. we older codgers need to stick together as there are few of us left ! hang in there ! and stay out'a trouble !
Oh, the glories of off-season camping! Beautiful ride! The flip side is cold mornings. I don't like to sit around camp in the mornings in the cold, and if it's too cold to ride in the morning, well... I don't go. ha!
I gave up on using a phone for navigation on my first trip -- it overheated and shut down, leaving me without any navigation. It mystifies me why no one talks about this! Bought a dedicated Garmin.
My wife and I were at medicine lake in September. Didn’t camp there but hiked over to the lava flow on the same trail you took. Also declined to climb the flow (I had an ankle and knee replaced in 2021 - looked like way to much for me to climb :}. Thanks for the drone shots showing what is up there!
Hi Bruce, Great that you took us on your first 390 overnighter, really enjoyed it. Fantastic scenery and boy what a great camping spot, just about as ideal as you can get. Ride safe, Pete UK.
Love the sound of your new bike. I have a Super Duke R 16 I've wearing my backpack on my chest lately because of my tent and pad behind. Looks strange but is convenient for water hose and getting anything out for gas or glasses. Doesn't effect riding . Kinda hassle to put on ,but I like it so far . Thanks for the back up phone tip . Going to check in to that.
Thanks Bruce, Love your videos.. So glad to see you back riding again. After you purchased your KTM 390 adventure I ended up trading my 2021 CB500X for a 2023 KTM adventure and look forward to riding it. I too am getting older and I found the CB500X to be top-heavy. The KTM 390 has a much lower centre of gravity and is also 60 pounds lighter. 👍🏻👍🏻
I considered the CB500X, but like you noticed, it is a bit top-heavy and at 439 pounds, almost the weight of the Tenere 700 that I recently sold. It is also more of a road-oriented adventure bike.
Great job, Great scenery. Just got back from a 3 day trip on my ktm 390 to Borrego Springs, Ca. The 390's are definitely a moto camping machine. Enjoy and ride safe.
Hi Bruce, I really enjoy your adventures, I am nearly 60 and like your style...would like to ask or comment on the fact cell phones are somewhat unreliable..I realize you have SAT backup but have you considered Amateur Radio-as a 2 meter handheld transceiver with an enhanced antenna could be useful utilizing a network of repeaters to enhance range from 30-100 miles to even trans continental -they also tune NOAA weather too and sometimes is just fun to chat with others on the frequency-not really like CB-much more organized and civil ... requires passing a Technician level exam but is not hard to do..I always take one into the back country, camping etc.. just fruit for thought.. stay safe and enjoy your new bike!
Nice video! I am wanting to get out there and camp a little bit as well at the ripe old age of 72. I have switched to a smaller bike also. I am ridding a Honda CRF300L Rally. I am finding it to be a good bike for what I want to do.
Great vid buddy. I stayed at Medicine Lake coming back from Amanda's Rocky Mountain Roll in Montana last August. Great camping but fuel getting there was a challenge, as you mentioned. I'll spend some more time in the area blending it with some more stuff I want to ride in Southern Oregon. Keep up the great content. Like you, I'm a solo senior rider so you content is very relevant to me...
I have a Kawasaki klx 300sm set up for adventure. Use the same tusk tank bag and going to go this week moto camping if I can find somewhere. The east coast sucks for dispersed camping. Going to have to do some stealth moto camping. 😮 Going to put it up on UA-cam when I get it done.
I've watched a couple of your videos (now subscribed) respect to you fella, you're the vision I had of myself until a couple of years ago. I'm 61 years young so a spring chicken in comparison 🙂 Been riding bikes since I was 15, unfortunately being from across the pond, riding was limited to hard top with the occasional jaunt over to mainland Europe but I did get the chance to quit work at 47 and ride around the world for 3 and a half years .. 57 countries and 80+K miles, a lot of it off hard top. Retired to my house in France after the trip and got a few jollies in to Eastern Europe, Ireland and the North of Scotland. (Off topic now but relevant to my first sentence) .... Then 2019 hit!!! Locked up in my house and forced to take a faux "vaccination" to have basic freedoms, which I have to say I agreed with at the start. After the 2nd and then 3rd coerced poisonings I, a formerly fit and healthy ex Serviceman with no medical history developed heart problems which have all but put a stop to any "adventurous" motorcycling activity and curtailed my day to day life. Channels like yours keep the dream alive, keep doing what you do .... thanks
Great to see you back out exploring and sharing your experiences. Had to really look to find Medicine Lake and it looks like a fine ride from Ashland. Paper maps never fail. Incredible view of the lava flow from your drone - as well as the other footage along the way. They really add perspective to the terrain. Safe travels, Bruce!
I'm in my 60's , and use a smart-phone, an old Garmin GPS with updated maps but also paper maps. 3 ways to find my way. But i might just have to dig out one of my old phones and throw it in the bag too, LOL. Always enjoy your Vids
I'm with you on my navigation system. I have an old and new phone both loaded with the maps of where I am going. A paper map usually and an Inreach device. I keep my good phone in my coat pocket as back up for mapping and use my old phone on my quad lock with the vibration dampener.
When your phone loses signal, it continuously sends out a ping. This accelerates the draining of the battery. Maybe your battery was just deeply discharged. I have a Garmin Zumo XT GPS which is hard wired. Pretty good unit.
Thanks for sharing it was great to see you out riding again. I hope I can ride again one day.😊😊😊. Would you mind showing mounting and dismounting with all that stuff on your bike. I'm not as agile as I used to be.😮😊
I have to 'cowboy mount' the bike just like a horse. Left foot on the peg, lean into the bike, the throw the right leg over. I'll put that in a future video.
Been to Spain three years running on the motorcycle and bring a Garmin and two phones . Garmin got water damage last year so phone 2 came into action . Phone 1 is message and bank
I looked at the 390 and it was too high. I want to check out the new Triumph 400 scrambled. I’m 74, I was completely healthy until a few months ago. I had surgery but my right leg and foot makes mounting my bikes difficult, I’m maybe 80% now. I have a BMW 1200GS and Husqvarna 701 but I’d be more comfortable on a smaller, lighter bike. I’m still looking.
I believe KTM has a lowering kit available that includes a smaller rear spring. Not too awfully expensive either. It can be difficult to mount at stock height. However, it's a great bike for us older adventurers.
You may not have gotten the shots you wanted from your GP, but what you got gives a pretty good sense of the views and environment you enjoyed. I'm far away now but from SW BC in my younger years. I like that Oregon/N California area. Thanks for sharing. Just wondering, in a word, you mention feeling a little cramped on the 390, how would you compare just that to the 411? Cheers.
I had mentioned in a previous video that I sold my T7 and purchased a 390 as well, curious, do you travel with extra tubes and tools to change a flat? Personally I've never changed a flat on a motorcycle. I do have AAA though, not that they would be much help other than tow me away.
Yes I carry a spare tube (only the front that can also be used in the smaller rear tire). I also carry a jack, air compressor, and tire spoons plus a can of slime as a first resort. It is not fun to change in the field. If I was close to civilization, I would have the bike towed to a repair shop rather that change the tire in the field.
I enjoy watching your videos and seeing all the wonderful places you ride to. I'm thinking about getting a drone to add a little more interest to my videos. What drone do you use? Thanks :)
The drone I use it the DJI Mini SE. It is compact and does not require registration in the U.S. I use the Litchi app on my Android phone to fly it. Very good drone for the price.
Really enjoyed your first "390 overnighter." You really have is a sense of your experience. Did you miss more luggage space or "loadability" that your T7 afforded?
I carried quite a bit of gear, and my Tusk rackless system worked fine. I will have a video in upcoming weeks describing the Tusk rackless system that I use for camping.
I hope the kids are paying attention. Old dudes with disposable incomes spending lots of $$ on the best gear, but opting for the tiny ADV bike. These aren’t just for beginners.
Yes it does. I use their maps too, but mostly I rely on Gaia GPS subscription. I find their map to be very accurate and detailed for off-pavement exploration. Garmin maps are too generalized.
I should leave a comment. How is the suspension on the little 390? And if you take a radiator hose clamp and attach that can of stew to your exhaust manifold, you would have dinner heated up at the campsite
Glad to see you’re out and about! The countryside you explore is so beautiful.
Tip: there is empirical evidence to prove that the vibration from motorcycle handlebars destroy cellphones. Yes manufactures warn against mounting their phone to anything like bike bars. Normally the first thing to be destroyed are the cameras in the phone.
Great to see you back up to full speed and active again! As a 68 year old I greatly enjoy seeing folks my age out and about.
its good that you know your limitation , we do this for fun , nothing to prove ... enjoy your ride Alain & Yellow
Thank you for the ride!👍🏻
I'm 67.. but when I grow up, I want to be like you! Haha.
Amazing. Dinty Moore Stew is still with us. That was my go-to on a 3 month trip in the early 70’s through México to Guatemala in a ‘66 VW Westfalia bus. Great memories!

Great video,beautiful places.
wow wonderful traveling
Beautiful ride. Looks like the 390 is working well for you. Good stuff.
Epic adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Dinty Moore beef stew… Just had the Large 38 ounce size for dinner and I’m sitting here watching your video, two thumbs up for Dinty Moore beef stew!!
Good stuff
Awesome video...take care of that leg...don't push yourself too hard.
I gave up on using a phone for navigation on my first trip -- it overheated and shut down, leaving me without any navigation. It mystifies me why no one talks about this! Bought a dedicated Garmin.
I only had this issue when I had it in a clear case where it got no airflow, I use a charging quadlock mount now and have no issues.
Glad you took us along for this trip. You have a beautiful landscape in your area.
Loved the music and the gentle pace. This old fella can’t wait to do the same, don’t waste a minute:)
Looks like a fun trip, thanks for the show.

Great video. Interesting to hear your comments on the 390, as I am also thinking of downsizing from Triumph Tiger 800.
So nice to see you enjoying yourself! Safe rides!

You're doing well, sir!!!
Thank you kindly
Can you buy Quadlock in the USA? I mounted my I-Phone om the bike with a Quadlock system. Very good and the Phone is mounted on a shockabsorber.
I'll look into that system.
I'm with you on my navigation system. I have an old and new phone both loaded with the maps of where I am going. A paper map usually and an Inreach device. I keep my good phone in my coat pocket as back up for mapping and use my old phone on my quad lock with the vibration dampener.
That's exactly my method, although I need to get a quad lock system.
I am travelling high risk since I only carry ONE smartphone, no sat and no old school map either. Balls to the Walls I say 😆
Beautifully filmed best wishes

Can you please post were the roads you took
You west coasters do have some beautiful camping areas. Are those free sites?
Not all camping sites are free but I usually get a senior discount so I rarely pay more than $10 per night.
My sort of ride 👌💯👍
Been to Spain three years running on the motorcycle and bring a Garmin and two phones . Garmin got water damage last year so phone 2 came into action . Phone 1 is message and bank
Nice place how long is your rainy season?
It rains from late October to early May, then almost no rain during the summer months.
I looked at the 390 and it was too high. I want to check out the new Triumph 400 scrambled. I’m 74, I was completely healthy until a few months ago. Very nice views from the drone…….what drone are you using.
It's a DJI Mini SE
your video's are great, just for you to know 👍👍music and comment it is very pleasant to watch.
I'm curious whether or not you adjusted the position of your handle bars for better ergonomics.
Yes I did. More upright, plus I added bar risers. Both helped so it is easier to stand now.
P.S. Very nice ride/VLOG!
You may not have gotten the shots you wanted from your GP, but what you got gives a pretty good sense of the views and environment you enjoyed.

Just wondering, in a word, you mention feeling a little cramped on the 390, how would you compare just that to the 411? Cheers.
Similar to the 411. The Royal Enfield comes with a tail rack that is very useful for touring.
I had mentioned in a previous video that I sold my T7 and purchased a 390 as well, curious, do you travel with extra tubes and tools to change a flat? Personally I've never changed a flat on a motorcycle. I do have AAA though, not that they would be much help other than tow me away.

Well said
Your garmin should bluetooth with your phone and use maps then
Yes it does. I use their maps too, but mostly I rely on Gaia GPS subscription. I find their map to be very accurate and detailed for off-pavement exploration. Garmin maps are too generalized.

Building a fire is primal and a big part of the camping experience .
