Great work! I’ve just bought a 2005 ford transit with some rust issues on the top that I want to have a go at dealing with although I’ve never done something like this before! Cheers for the step by step walkthrough!
Hi, I have a kia Soul. It has a rust spot near the roof of my car. It is in between the drivers side and the passenger side about four inches diameter. I want to try to fix it myself. Can you tell me all the tools that I will need? I have never done anything like this, but I am willing to to try. I just need to know exactly the tools to get and what products to put on the car. Should I use the same rust remover that you did? Also, what size sand paper should I get? My Kia is a 2011 and I need to get a new car. I hope you can help me.
Im going to do the same on my Sprinter. But… I want to fill the holes with zinc plated metal sheet and soft welded with lead. The old way. My Grand father taught me this 18 years ago… Then a bit of bondo on the top just for smoothing the surface..
Ive Just used maturic acid it remove rust and carbon from oxygen sensor and oxygen sensor adapter and it turned like brand new and what i have is surface rust so lll Just put few drops and hope itll remove rust and itll be ready for paint
what looks like surface rust can sometimes be far worse when you start removing it, sometimes you need to grind off the rust then use a remover to kill anything remaining, I wouldn't just use it on rust without doing some rust prep first, it might work but also might just double the work required to get it right
Hiya mate. My new van has some rust around the holes where a roof rack once was. I’m gonna fit a new one, but I’m guessing if I sand away the excess and treat with kurust, it should be ready for the new rack right?
It will remove the surface rust and make it look tidier for a while, but it will come back. The only way to ensure rust doesn't come back is to cut it out and replace with good metal as I've tried Kurust, Rustins remover, Joblite Remover and it never 100% kills it off so unless cut out, it will slowly come back
Yp pretty much, the roof needed sorting before it got any worse so removed any rust with sanding or grinding, filler over any sanded areas, sanded the filler, primered the filler, then sent the van in for a full respray to get it looking nice again and the transformation at the end makes a huge difference
If the rust is in one small area, do I have to get the whole roof painted? I need to do this fast because the rust has been on there for a couple of months!!!
You don’t need to get the whole roof done unless your repair doesn’t match the paint, general just need a grinder with a sanding flap disc, that’ll remove the rust, then apply rust treatment, apply filler over the top, sand it back and paint with spray paint. It can be hard to match paint though and sometimes rust repairs don’t last long
yes most places will supply whats needed but be warned its not for the faint of heart, getting a colour match to factory paint isn't easy for a beginner, sometimes its just worth paying someone to do it right first time
@@TheCampervanBuilder I have a connect too, just finished the inside and was thinking of maybe spraying myself and attempt a camo pattern but i do like that metal flake through the paint on your one and the whole van looks fresh after its done properly so might pay out after this lockdown is lifted, till then mate keep tinkering.
could you give me a number please mate? I mean a price, not a phone number of a painter. 😂 I'm in Australia and paint jobs seem to cost 1000 - 4000 dollar (AUD). What did you pay only for the roof in UK? Also great video, thanks heaps!
I really don't know who's the destroyer that makes roofs like pools not able to drain easily water, is just so after obsolescence! Those are the enemies of humanity. See if you have to cut your edges around the roof for water to get out of the roof, I have to cut the walls in corners and between back doors joint do water pouring down doesn't obstruct visibility over the back windows.

Wow nice color
Thanks p
Could you link the products you used in the video description?
Pretty drippy, now I'm thinking of some plans myself 🧐🤑
Great stuff. Very useful as I'm gonna give my arches a go now that you have inspired me.
Glad to be of help/inspiration
Looks great in that colour!
Thanks for sharing !
The rust is inside out due to corrosive foams holding the sheetmetal. Rust clusters will pop out soon.
Love your video man I did this yesterday !!
Nice work!
Nice show the results

WOULD THAT BE THE BEST WAY TO GO I HAVE TO THIS ON MY 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO. HOW MUCH IN TOTAL COST? I WILL DO THE LABOR MYSELF
Superb. I need to sort my cars roof. Especially bad at the rear . I want no more rust.
Glad to be of help

@@TheCampervanBuilder Thanks but really surprised its doing amazing job
👍. Great work. Cool vans!
Awesome work !!!
Thanks, it certainly needed it
Hammerite wont withstand road salt. Not designed for vehicles treatments. But on the roof might stay bit longer good luck
Hammerite is shit, you are right! Get the right products otherwise all the good work is a waste.
hey hows the roof doing today how did this hold up?
it did well, looks good still

So after sanding you apply rust converter
Then filler then sanding then primer
Then youve painted it?

@@TheCampervanBuilder I think I might have to do that!!! Also, I work all week. It's not like I have so much time to experiment!!
Owned many very old vans, never had rust on the roof…
I guess you've not had many transits lol
@@TheCampervanBuilder you are right 😂😂😂
Wat should be the approximate cost for this whole treatment?
If done yourself then anywhere from £50-150 ($75-200) for materials etc. If it was done in a bodyshop, easily double that or more
@@TheCampervanBuilder thank you so much for your response
awesome great job
I just liked the video for the accent to start. I'm sure the actual info's helpful though
Good job mate, how much did it cost to get sprayed?
It was quite cheap as I did a deal with a local spray shop where they did a reduced price as I already did all the prep, its worth asking around
