We knew when we bought the van that what with the state of the paintjob we would be painting it on the cheap with a roller.
Flakey paint? Dents? Rust? No problem!
With the terrible old paint job peeling away and having had numerous bodge paint touch ups in it's previous life it was time we went about putting things right. It was an old cheap van and we didn't want to spend money getting it professionally re-sprayed so what was the alternative?
PAINT IT WITH A ROLLER USING CHEAP PAINT OF COURSE!!!
So WHO are WE? We’re Scarlett, Craig and Merlin and along with Helsing, form the PILGRIM PODS!
If you enjoy this video why not check out some of our other content? Delve even deeper into our channel; we thought we’d create a series of vlogs chronicling the conversion of our old panel van HELSING (did you see what we did there?) into a weekend warrioring campervan for ADVENTURING and EXPLORING in the UK.
Each vlog will cover a stage or smaller element of our campervan build, showing our ideas put into action and highlighting our SUCCESSES and FAILURES along the way. With no previous experience this may make for an interesting journey! Our plan is to convert a cheap van on a small budget without cutting corners and at the end, have a campervan to be proud of. We’re hoping you’d like to join us for this journey and that you find our uploads ENTERTAINING and even, INFORMATIVE!
So, in this vlog we're painting our campervan on the cheap using a roller and Rustoleum CombiColor gloss paint. With no previous experience and only some limited knowledge gleaned from the internet were we making a huge mistake?

What a transformation! Well worth the effort. Boiled linseed oil works really well on the exterior plastic and brings them up like new and it’s cheap and lasts ages.
Cheers! 👍😊 We thought about going that route but on this particular aged van the bumpers and trim are grey; I think they were changed to black 2014 onwards. The grey looks a bit wishy washy against the colour so were thinking of painting them black. 🤔🙂
Pilgrim Pods mine are grey too on my 57 plate, trust me, the linseed oil transforms them, makes them look brand new.
@@yeah_right_ok_no1190 you're twisting our arms here. A few folk have said the grey looks good against the new paint.
didnt know that
@@PilgrimPods no mate get a bottle of cherry blossom black shoe polish tip it in a tub and use a paint brush to paint the trim.Do 2 or 3 coats .it goes black.and stays black.Trust me I've done mine
I've just finished doing my fiat ducato using many of your tips and techniques, it's come out amazingly. I used the same paint, rollers and even foam brushes. So thank you 👍
and how does it look like a year later?
That came out WAY better than I expected - nice work!
Feeling slightly more confident about doing the same to my T5...
Same and same! Hope it goes/ went well
Great video. I've got 2 Luton vans for work. 10 plate and 13. Once a year I sand the sils, arches, and paint the doors, wings and bonnet with a gloss roller. Always use metal white gloss sieved and 10% white spirits. Gets a slight orange peel effect but looks great and is a more solid finish then expensive spray. Key is not to use too much paint on the roller and don't apply too much pressure to stop lines appearing
I've watched so many videos and I have to say yours is by far the most helpful and best I've watched and has given me the confidence to paint my van this summer thanks 👍😁
Thanks, glad you have found it useful. Mission accomplished. 🙂
You achieved your aim...I round it really helpful and inspiring
About to paint my rusty 1998 Merc Sprinter...happy days... 🤪👍
Hey Colin, thanks for checking the video out and glad you found it helpful. Best of luck painting your Sprinter mate! 🙂🍻
Very good presentation and paint job
I’ve just repainted my van and those prodec rollers are a gamechanger! One roller covered my whole van. I used gloss foam rollers last time and it was an unpleasant experience as they deteriorated leaving bits of foam on your paintwork and constantly changing them.
Thanks, glad they helped. It's nice to know the video is helping folk and saving them a bit of money in the process! 🙂👍
Looks amazing!!! Thank you for sharing your method. This is THE best DIY van paint job video out there! 👏🏽🙏🏽
Hey Jeremy, thanks for checking the video out and for the praise! I can't take much of the credit though as all I've done is taken the information I've researched, applied it to painting my own van, recorded the process and just offered up a few tips I've personally found along the way. We're just glad folk are finding it useful. I've had a nose at your own channel and it looks really interesting. I certainly need to start taking better care of myself as since I've turned 40 it seems all of a sudden I've started discovering aches and pains! 😆 I'll definitely take a closer look at some of your videos. All the best mate. 🙂👍
What a fabulous job guys! You must be delighted! Helsing looks brand new! What a transformation! I’m sold, I’m going to do mine!
Thanks so much!
I'm just getting my van priced up for vinyl wrap.........you've just changed my mind to paint! 🙌☺️
That is awesome!
Did not realised it's so simple to paint your van, thank you for the video, really useful
I was surprised too when I was doing my own research. Can't go wrong with this method on a tired looking older van though I have to say if ever there's a next time I'd like to have a go at using a cheap spray gun to see what results I can get.
@@PilgrimPods That would be my options next year, painting or spraying, unless I will get acceptable and stealthy colour which is unlikely
Omg you’ve given me the confidence to paint our 1996 mini pick up truck!!! So excited to do this now!! Thank you!
Hi there! This video really motivated me to go paint my van too, I was just curious for the condition of the paint 2 years later, can you do a follow up video on how the paint aged? Or do you have instagram where you can show me some pictures of decay? Thanks a bunch, have a great day :)
Im hear looking for this
I'll put something together. 😊
It never occured to me that you could handpaint a van and I certainly didn't think it could look this great! Amazing job!
Thanks Natalie! Prep is key and with that you can get an awesome finish for very little financial outlay.
Just got my old converted ford transit minibus back on road! It’s running well but look terrible. Thinking of yellow with rainbows. Thanks for the tips You sound like your from England. We are in Doncaster
Do it! Would love to see that. Tamworth here. 🙂🙌
I am an avid vanlife follower soon to join the community. I am well impressed with what you have achieved using a roller, I never thought that was possible WOW the Van looks fab, well done, from Paddy here in Dublin.
Thanks Paddy! We've been following folks journeys in their campervans across social media for years too. We've wanted a campervan for the last 13 years (T25 originally) and are finally at a place in our lives where we can start converting one. 😊 Best of luck in your own journey VERY soon! 😁🙌💙❤
Hi mate just a quick one is it Matt or satin or gloss you used
Well done👍I just experimented on a 06 vauxhall combo van with red hammerite came up really well.Going to get a bigger soon will definitely use your video as help
Class. I wish I could “sign post” as well as you when giving instructions. Great video!
Thanks Bruce! We're learning as we go. Every day is a school day! 😊👍
About to paint my transit, thanks for the tips
Good luck painting the transit mate. 🙂👍
Good on you mate. Your paint job has inspired me to do my own camper van paint job. Thanks
Looks great, I have the same issue on an older relay van which I want to tidy up on a budget so I think I'll definitely give it a go now. It can't look worse than it does!
Good luck! 🤞 We thought ours couldn't look any worse and it turned out alright in the end so we're sure yours will too. 😊🙌
Wow! Looks like it's a brand new one! Well done mate ! 👌
It's made quite a difference hasn't it. Not bad for less than £50! Thanks for checking it out. 🙌
Great video. Thanks. My 34 year old VW is changing from red to forest green!
Amazing thanks. Didn't know I could do this and hate the colour of my van. Very impressed
Thanks, helped me out showing the detail, warts and all! Looks great, given me the confidence to save our LT35 😊
Glad you found the video to be of use. We are rather fond of LT35s! Best of luck with your own paint job. 😁🍻
Looks great! I’m going to paint my caravan soon. Let’s hope that it will look good... thanks for sharing the video!
Thanks for checking it out! 😊🙌 And best of luck painting your caravan. We're sure it'll turn out great. 👍
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Just about to order my paint and rollers
Thanks Harry. 🍻 Good luck with your own. 🙂
A very good job mate I like the colour choice youv,e done well 😊
Man. Love it. I was thinking on taking raptor paint for my future budget van. Well, we'll see
Heard really good things about raptor paint. 🙂
Had no idea diy roller paint could look so good. So much nicer coverage with a roller than the mottled spray can look. I want to buy a used ambulance for camping, and dont want it to look like an ambulance, so now I have a solution, roller it!😀❤
i wasnt liking the color at the beginning...but by the end ..wow what a transformation... flame polish those plastics and thatll be good as new... good job!
Thanks so much! 😊
been thinking of doing this to my Vito once i get rid of the rust. You have done an amazing job well done!
Thanks. I have to say almost two years later it still looks great. I plan to throw up some photos later today on our Instagram page if you care to see the proof of the pudding!
I've used these rollers to paint boats and they give a decent finish - great video.
What a transformation. It looks amazing. Took a lot of time and patience too and well worth it.
Thanks so much! 😊 Will hopefully look even better after a couple more coats and a good polish. Thanks for taking the time to check us out. ✌💙❤
I no what I’m doing this summer
Thanks pal 👍🏻
Good luck mate!
This was so helpful and the results are amazing. I’m going to attempt to do my van 🚐👍🏻
Truly incredible result! Thank you for taking the time to share and in so much detail. Definitely going to do this on my white sprinter conversion. It’s looking a bit tatty and needs an upgrade on exterior. Fantastic job 👌👌
excellent video, ive just bought an iveco daily converted camper, all panels are scabby with rust so definitely going to try your roller paintjob, many thanks 😃👍
Good luck mate!
The rain was a gift you never knew how to exploit it, wet and dry sanding in the rain 😂
Nice job well worth all the hard work looking good now
Thanks David, I appreciate it. 🙂
Very helpful and looking fab. About to do my camper van asap
Thanks! 😊 Best of luck with your own camper! 👍💙❤
Wow! What a difference! Great choice of color on this van! The closeup shots helped a lot with gauging texture of the paint. I love the gloss. I was going to use a truck bedliner paint like Raptor or Durabak but this is a lot easier to roll on and work with. Apparently this is an Alkyd Polyurethane so more durable than oil enamel paint. I tried to find this in the US but only made in UK. Have contacted Rustoleum.
You may want to paint the plastic bumpers with Durabak bedliner paint. For fine roller brushing, use a mohair brush. The version with low texture is lovely for a bumper. No gloss but a satin finish. Sticks well to all surfaces, and has more flexibility than UPOL Raptor liner made in UK. Monstaliner is also good. You will need a Xylene solvent and brush cleaner, not Mineral Spirits. There is a great video on UA-cam on a Durabak paint job on an RV - yellow color - beautiful!
Hey there and thanks for checking the video out. I'll make a mental note of your advice for the bumpers should I have to tackle any again in the future. All the best painting your own! 🙂👍
Hey Lass-in Angeles, what did you learn about the paint in the U.S.? Going through the same thing...
WELL DONE THE VAN LOOKS FANTASTIC :)
Thanks! It couldn't look any worse than it did before we started but we think it turned out well. 😊👍
Amazing SHARING thank you so much for the whole team.
Thanks for checking the videos out Atma! 😊👍
@@PilgrimPods: I really learned a lot from your videos and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS.
Nice steady hand 👍🏻
Id have it all over the plastic bumper 🤦🏼♂️
Just practice Angela. The amount of cutting in I've done painting houses over the years has obviously paid off! 😁👍
Wow that looks great, thank you for sharing, big hugs from MN
Cheers fir this . We’ve been funking up the motor home on the inside and plan to do this on the outer .. great help, thank you .
Good luck guys! If we can get a decent finish we're sure you'll nail it! 😁🙌
Phenomenal job! I am getting ready to do my van which has lots of chipped areas and some rust on the roof.
Good luck Richard, we're sure you'll do a banging job mate. 🙂👍
It looks really great! Well done guys! 👏👏👏
Cheers Lumpy! 🙂🍻
Looks great makes me think about painting my oldschool with this method
You should!
This is great! I’m gonna paint my van too, in a couple of months
Thanks Ingrid and best of luck painting your own van! 🙂👍
Looks great. A lot of work but well worth the saving on a body shop doing it
I will be doing this to my van, I will be using a paint by Sherwin Williams that is used for repainting propane tanks that stay outside they have 2 types and one is used if you have slot of rust, thanks for the tips, I will be using POR-15 to go over spots of rust believe me it works great the rust will not come back.
I'll be sure to take a look at that paint and thanks for swinging by and checking the video out. Best of luck painting your own van! 🙂👍
POR -15 paint is an excellent paint for smoothing over pitted & rough areas but a larger tin doesn't seem to store very well once opened ,I found it needs to be used the same day ,ideal to for sealing rusty petrol tanks on the inside as it's unaffected by petrol , even cellulose thinner can't remove it once dry.
Looks absolutely awesome. Wanting to do this to my astra van.
Get on it mate! 🙂
im well impressed with that mate , youve done a really good job
Thanks a lot! Surprisingly easy to do too and of course cheap. 🙂👍
Thank you for his video... now i already an idea to hand paint my car before christmas day
I plan on painting my van today,so thank you for taking your time to make this video
Good luck! Interested to know what colour you've gone with. 🙂👍
This video has inspired me to give it ago on outs thanks , helsing looks great
How good does that look! This is one job it doesn't look like I'll have to do anymore as the last few vans I've seen have surprisingly good bodywork, but given the result you've achieved I'm sorta tempted to do it anyway.
It turned out all right in the end. 😊 Are you any closer to getting your hands on your own van yet then? 🤞 If you do decide a change of colour is in order providing the van has no issues with the current paintwork you shouldn't have any issues rollering it. You've seen how bad our paint and bodywork was and we still managed to get a decent finish. If we can, anyone can. Good luck in that search! 🙌
@@PilgrimPods Deposit placed so technically I've got a van but we'll see. I tried my best but I don't have your skill to sniff out a bargain so I'll be paying almost double what you have for something a bit older and knowing my luck in much worse condition. Anyway even if it's sound I can't really afford to do anything to it for a while. Timing belt and service is gonna cost me another £500 quid, then there's insurance and tax cause I don't have a driveway. I must be mad to do this.
Apologies Tine, I have no idea how your comment slipped through the net... 😑 New van, exciting times! 😁🙌 I've seen comments in numerous places of the cost of vans increasing due to the increase of delivery drivers etc at this time, but who knows! Fingers crossed you've bagged yourself a good 'un. 🤞 Keep us informed on how you get on with it; either here, Instagram or Facebook. Would love to know how things go. 😊✌💙❤
Wow I never knew you could get a finish like that with a roller, you've done a great job,can I bring mine to you to be done lol. Great work 👍
Yeah, it's not a bad finish for what it costs and opens up all sorts of possibilities for tired old vans. Done with the painting now I'm afraid Paul! 😁
@@PilgrimPods Haha cant blame a bloke for asking 👍
Love your videos by the way, keep up the good work,I'm new to van life.
You call the paint Self Levelling when it smooths itself out.!
Thank you! Really useful, I’m going to try this on my old VW T4 campervan 😊
Thanks Jan! Good luck painting your T4. I'm sure it'll look great. If you have a second to reply, let me know what colour you're going with! 🙂👍
@@PilgrimPods well to make it easy I’m going for close to the original off white. I’m a bit worried about the fiddly bits around the door edges and where they close
My wife and I absolutely love your series, helpful, so down to earth and straightforward. We've watched loads of different ones and your series far and away the best around. Inspired us to but the paint for our van, just waiting for some better weather. Can I ask about sanding please....we have our van in village car park, how much dust etc is there likely to be, dont want to cause issues for neighbours. Could cover neighbour car in dustsheet....how did you find it? Oh for a driveway!!
Hey Damien, thanks for taking the time to check out our build series, we really appreciate it. 🙂 For the prep we did use an orbital sander for some of the larger sections and whilst that did create dust it wasn't of biblical proportions to worry about the neighbours cars etc. Sanding back between the coats created no dust in the air at all because we used wet and dry sandpaper that was obviously wet! 😆 A driveway makes life so much easier (says the person who can't get down the side of the van because his driveaway is too narrow). Best of luck to you both painting your own van! We'd love to see a before and after shot, if you're on Instagram give us a wave so we can follow along. 🍻
@@PilgrimPods Thanks ever so for the encouragement, we're going to buy a couple of large dust sheets to cover neighbours cars by us. Work commitments mean cant start til middle of next month but will send you before and after pics.....excited, very nervous, but excited!
That really looks good. Can’t wait to do my car 🚙 Thanks
Jeepers...just went to see if I could paint my boxer blue van...this video popped up !!! By bugger has the same problem...going to follow vid Cheers bud !!
There's a few of our vans with the same issue... 😄
Looks a great way of transforming the paint work! Nice job 👍
Thanks Ashley. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. 🙂👍
Thanks for the video, inspired me to roller my van as its the typical vauxhall flame red/pink
Thanks and best of luck painting your own! 🙂👍
Quite surprised by what you've achieved. Very well done!
Great job mate, looks bloody fantastic. You’ve given me the courage to give my wifes car a fresh lick of paint 😬
Thanks mate, best of luck!
PROPER JOB FELLA! Looks brilliant , great info , easy listening, keep up the good work .
Thanks Brian, appreciate you checking it out!
That's a brilliant look. Very inspiring indeed.
That’s a real good finish for a roller, fair play dude
I knew a good finish could be achieved but it has turned out better than I expected. I thought I'd have to flat it back and give it a polish to get a nice finish but even without those steps it looks pretty good. 🙂🍻
Leave the fly's and rub them out when it's dry. Genius, you just saved me so much hastle.👍
Makes life easier and it works!
This was very relaxing to watch actually
Just discovered your channel through this video! What an amazing paint job! It really does look like a new van! I’m in the process of hunting for a van to convert now and I’ll defo be doing this when I get one! Happy travels :)
Thanks Jack! 😊 Best of luck in your hunt for a van. 🤞
Thanks! Good luck with the conversion- looking forwards to seeing it!
Great advice and so helpful. Your van looks great. I hope mine will too!
Cheers Reuben! 😊🍻 If we can make this knackered old van look decent (and doing so on the cheap) anyone can! Best of luck with your own mate. 😁🤞 If you're on Instagram give us a nod so we can check your van out!
Good job, Next time use a HVLO electric sprayer ( Wagner brand or similar £75 from Amazon) for the second coat...You will really be amazed at the finnish..
Thanx a lot for thé tips, it looks fabulons. I Hope I will do a beautiful job like you did
I love the roller concept so much more
What a great job! My Ducato self build desperately needs some paint (although not as bad as Helsing!) but iv been reluctant to attempt rollering. Im really tempted to give it a go now!
Go for it! 🙌 If we can do a half decent job anyone can! Taking a bit of sandpaper out of the equation it hasn't cost us even £50, just a bit of time. 😁👍💙👌
@@PilgrimPods I think I will. Only thing left to decide is what colour lol
Great roller job , have had vehicle color changes before and major problem is door jams & under the bonnet or engine compartment
Yeah I hear you there. We should have focused on those areas first and are now touching them up later on. Do plan on getting another couple of coats down all over next year before a final sand and polish so it'll eventually all come together. Priority right now is finishing off the campervan build. 🙂
Well worth the effort. Well done, love the colour!
Thanks Sue! 😊 We appreciate you taking the time to check out our video. 👍💙❤
Quite an improvement at a low cost. I would have pressure washed it first to blow off any failing paint. I'd hate to go to that work and have the sub level paint fail in short order.
Sorry for the late reply Charles, we kind of switched off from all things van related over the festive period. In the video preceding this we jet washed the whole van, in fact we did it multiple times whilst waiting for decent weather to paint; each and every time a little more paint lifted... I don't know if you're familiar with these vans but there are a lot the same age as ours with the same issue with the paint; I'm assuming there must have been an issue at the factory.
Despite our efforts to remove all of the flakey paint we've still encountered issues with what seemed at the time sound paint lifting when the new paint has been taped up. In an ideal world we would have taken it completely back to primer but that would have taken us an absolute age and wasn't really worth doing with a 13 year old van. I guess the beauty of rollering your van is you can always touch it up if need be with minimal prep and it looks as good as new!
@@PilgrimPods Thanks for the follow up. Its a load of work painting something that size with all the prep!
I saw a roller brushed Renault Trafic. It didn't look too bad. Looked to be in the same colour as this.
If the vehicle is a right mess you honestly can't go wrong tidying it up with a roller. Even with just two coats and no polish ours looks a lot better than it did. Needs another couple of coats though and a good sand and polish next year before I call it done. 🙂
Really nicely done with a very satisfying result. I should have done the bumpers too.
Thanks 👍
Wow! You did a fabulous job.
Hey Karen, thanks for the positive vibes! All the best to you and yours. 🙂👍
Amazing job and a great instructional video gives me the confidence to do my own
If you want to do it just crack on! If we can do it anyone can and all it costs is a bit of time a tin of paint, thinners and rollers! Thanks for the support. 😊✌💙❤
Amazing! Thanks for the video. My mind is made up, I'm doing mine now.
Good luck Luke, if I can do a decent job anyone can mate. 🙂👍
looks very good but now I would have to do trims and bumpers in matt black
Thanks Russ, two cans of black bumper spray paint should be arriving tomorrow! 😁🙌
This looks awesome! We are painting our van next week. How many tins of the paint did you use? Thanks Jo
Hey Joanna, one 2.5ltr tin was enough for two coats and maybe a third judging by what is left. Good luck painting your own! 😊👍
I’ve really enjoyed this video, thanks for documenting it.
I have a really tacky old caravan which is a complete eyesore outside the house. I’ve been trying to find out how to paint it cheaply ( without it looking worse) but I’m aware this some bits are fibre glass, moulded plastic & coated aluminium..... so trying to figure out different primers for three materials was a nightmare... this Rustolium combicolour seems to be the best option I think.
Thanks again, best wishes
Good luck! 👍
I'm about to buy a van tomorrow with the ugliest exterior, I'm super excited to try these tips myself!
Did you buy the van? If so, what did you get? And if you did, best of luck painting it! We're sure you'll nail it. 👌🙂
@@PilgrimPods I did buy it! I got a 1986 Dodge Ram Hightop. I'll be painting it when the dry season comes :D
@@sugarycookie6044 cool! 🙌
Amazing job! 👏 We are about to paint our van too, thank you for the info. ✌️
Best of luck with your own painting! 😊 If we can do it and get a half decent finish, honestly anyone can. 👍 If you're on Insta be sure to throw some pics our way! 🙂💙❤
Well done mate - a damn good effort. And good on ya for taking the plunge and painting it yourself. Very brave! I'm, inspired.
I'd like to see the finished result once you have done another few coats and lacquered it.
Also - i'd be interested in the total cost?
Cheers
Thanks Andy! 😊 We couldn't justify the cost of a proper paint job on a tatty old £1500 van so had to explore alternatives. We'll get some more coats on once we've done the conversion and do a follow up once it's all polished up! 😃 Cost so far for rollers and paint is less than £50. I'll add some links to all materials in the description shortly. 👍
Lovely job, will save this for later
great job looks great rob from the toon
Cheers Robert! 😊 A couple more coats and a bit of cutting and polishing and hopefully it'll look even better! 😁🤞
this was a great vid I have a van and I am going to paint it
That's the best hand paint job I have seen.
Cheers Johnny! It's not perfect but looks loads better than the original paint. Another two coats and a final flat and polish next year and I'll be happy. Priority is the campervan conversion so we can get out in it. 🙂
