I disagree about stacking rocks or carving your name is destroying nature or 'disrespectful'. Humans are part of nature just like other primates. This is just what we do, it's one of our features. Nature cannot be destroyed, that's already the first wrong premise. Nature is chaotic in itself, and living beings are constantly shaping nature and vice versa.
As a Spanish speaker, I'm very ashamed right now. Haha. But you never know in the US if they're gonna go with the Spanish pronunciation or the English. Lol
Yeah I was like huh? Being in SD now I knew better at how to pronounce La Jolla compared to when I use to live near LA and mispronounced Van Nuys! I’m sure you can guess how I said that.
I’d heard you speak Spanish and thought you were pulling our legs! When you get back, try the Scripps Pier at dawn and Fort Rosecrans Cemetery at sunset. Great episode though.
La Joel-La tide pools. Hahahahaha. Kidding aside glad to see you’re in our backyard. Should have organized a meetup. SD has a very robust photography community. We would have loved to meet u in person.
Amen! to the leave nature as you found it if not better then you found it. I pick rubbish up if I see it on my outings leaving places a little better then I found them. Great content can't wait to see the rest of the road trip.
I love the music choice when you were arriving at the ocean for sunset. It felt like you were not only going to take sweet pictures but crush them! Of course, the sea had to take all the glory! Anyway, I really liked your message about not carving into nature. It is very important to always show respect to nature so that it can be enjoyable to everybody!
Another great vid there Brendan and good advice to wash your tripod legs but equally goo advice would be to extend the lower sections by about a foot and keep the locking mechanisms out of the sand/water.
I’m sure you figured this out by now, but La Jolla is pronounced “La Hoya.” Long time San Diego resident, here. I agree with you about carving initials, but rock stacks have saved my butt on a number of occasion in the wilderness when trails are not well marked. Rest assured the sea will take care of those initials in the rocks in short order. Looking forward to seeking out your west coast series,
Something special about seaside photography. Perhaps it’s the trying to have some control over the uncontrollable that attracts us. Looking forward to seeing more of your trip. Thanks for sharing Brendan
Great video Brendan. I grew up in San Diego/Escondido area. Love the weather... Back then we won't say HOW long ago.... I'd take my film Ricoh camera and go down to Sunset Cliffs.
Portland ? ...you gotta go for the history there .....99W south to McMinnevill where the Evergreen Aviation Museum houses Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose ?" - I had to drag my wife out of there at closing time - even she had a blast there....take lots of film ........
Welcome to SD! I work right by the tide pools you were at and I get so upset every time I see the defacing! It's not just you, I shoot there all the time and I struggle every single time to find a composition i like. There's just too many. If you're every back in town and need ideas, send me a note. Cheers.
Love the video and the images are gorgeous. What lovely colours and water movement. I'm loving this road trip already. I'm in the UK but for me USA and Canada have my favourite landscapes.
Man, I have just come back from the same trip and it was kinda feezing weather. I know you’re canadian but I can’t understand you wearing t’s outside ahaha cheers mate, keep up with great work
Love San Diego, everything about it! I was just there in November and I'd recommend "Oceanside" Beach...the pier is incredible at sunset (I have a video on my channel about my trip). Oh and apparently La Jolla = La "Hoya" :P
Wow, I wish I was coming with you guys! It's kind of a dream of mine to travel the west coast! So nice to be watching this, I love the seascape photos you took from the tide pools! And I agree with nature, leave it the way you found it and don't mess with it.. It's such a shame that people are doing this.. I hope they take your message to heart and learn from it!
Couldn't agree more on the rock carving and tree carving and even carving into decks and docks and overlooks. As you said, it is permanent. I'm not sure I have an issue with stacking rocks.
Glad you visited San Diego. That section in La Jolla that you were photographing in is known as Hospitals Reef. I'm there quite often after work to shoot the sunset. Very popular spot for photographers.
All the way to Portland ..... oh so close to the country of Beavers, Moose and Maple Syrup 😆 Really enjoy the story's behind the compositions 😀 The surfer in the water, now there's minimalism at its best 👍👍
Sweet! I live in Sd and I own a taco shop up the street from the tide pools. Let me know when you get down here and I’ll go shooting with you got some great spots
I've no problem with the odd cairn being built coz you can at least disassemble them but totally agree about carving into rocks, trees etc - brainless. Definitely need good high grip soles on footwear for seascapes and I think I need to start loading extra water to wash off my tripod legs, where I go in the UK they don't have taps on the beach like in San Diego.
lol La jolla . the J is pronounced as a H in spanish like (jose) its pronounced LA- Hoy- ya . noww what tripod is that? trying to find a new tripod for traveling . i have the mefoto roadtrip
I'm 100% with you about people carving into rocks and trees but stacking rocks is destroying nature in not sure I follow that logic. Thanks so much for another great video.
Stacking rocks was a huge problem in a place called the Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland. It got so bad that the plants that grew between the rocks were starting to die. These were rare plants that were found in the Med and the Alpine region.
hello Brendan. First i want to thank you for the videos you produce. i admire you photos. i want to ask you something. Have you ever had problem to fly in the airplanes cabins with the filters ? i ask because there are made of glass...thank you !
I'm your huge fan idol Brendan 😊😊😊 I wish you will visit our Beautiful Country the Philippines. I wish that I will meet you soon and take a photo with. You are the King of Photography Brendan 😊😊😊😊
Oh yeah. I'm sorry about that because just only this year that I Subscribe you idol Brendan. 😊😊😊 I hope soon you will come back here again in our Beautiful Country which is The Philippines,It's More Fun here 😊😊😊
Welcome to the PNW, brother! Finally you’re here! Although I’m sad that Seattle isn’t on your list. Try to squeeze in a road trip up north man if you’re still in Portland. Awesome shots as usual 👍🏻
Good to see vids of the west coast. Wondering if you made any stops in Laguna or Newport beach areas. I live about 15 mins from many of those areas, and always shooting seascapes there.
Thank you Brendan for mentioning the initials etched in the rocks. No one wants to see that. You want to enjoy the simplicity in nature, not someone's etchings. Not cool at all. Great shots as usual, love them all!
I couldn't agree with you more about people defacing nature with carvings and cairns. Just don't do it, people! BTW I hope you took a whale-watching tour out of Newport Beach. You may have grey whales or humpbacks in migration. You'll also pass Gilligan's Cove where they shot the cove scenes for "Gilligan's Island". EDIT: just got to the end and I see you're nowhere near SD now. Oh, well.
"The beach is kind of boring and hard to photograph" said no one ever. I literally only go to the beach and never have a hard time with content. Bring an 10 stop ND filter and a tripod and you can create endless long exposures using ocean water.
I can just imagin 500 or moe years ago native americans parents were yelling at their kids that the petroglyphs and other ancient works were defacing nature.
Destroying nature is horrible, there is a rock that looks like an Indian Chief plopping off the sand, it has a heart and some initials carved on to it :/ we can photoshop it out, but I think it’s bad that is the solution to someone’s vandalism.
@@onthemove301 11,000 years ago at the end of the ice age there was no writing systems, no ways of preserving language, no ways of recording history. @@BrendanvanSon Brendan, I wasn't looking for an argument but since you feel strongly here's a counterpoint. Sure, the (probably) teenagers who did their own rock carvings were immaturely selfish. But they may be locals, in what looks like an urban environment, albeit by the sea. It doesn't appear to be a religious site, it doesn't have historical importance. It's possibly somewhere the perpetrators visit quite often and to them it's not so special. I don't like gratuitous graffitti of any kind, but I understand why it happens and has happened metaphorically since the beginning of time.

You should really ask first before you make judgement on my lifestyle.
Totally agree with you about defacing nature. My motto is take only photos, leave only footprints
And only make footsteps that don't destruct.
I see it all too often. People who feel the need to deface the beauty of nature are complete morons, with an IQ of about 30.

Absolutely brutal. Hopefully people are starting to wise up.
I am in Portland if you are looking for anyone to show you the sights around town or the Oregon Coast.
Tides app very good to see tides and moon without internet connection
I have a question for you. I was told a way to increase your viewership is to load it on Reddit. Do you know about this and does youtube allow it?

Brendan van Son awesome. It’d be fun to dedicate a trip just for WA and BC.
Just another 3 hours drive
Cool video. Very close to my home. Nice hair style : )

PS breakfast at 101 Diner in Encinitas!
Great video as always. Seriously beautiful shots 👌🏻 Why would you stop at Portland when Olympic has like the most beautiful coastlines in the country?

Thanks for the comments on graffiti in nature. Grrrrr ...

What would you recommend for a beginner to take a long exposure photo? I have acheap ND filter, but I think it doesn't really make it.
Cheap ones are fine to practice with. I used cheap ones even professionally for a year or so.

How did you get to the red rock crossing spot in Sedona?
There's a trail on the other side called Baldwin trail. You walk from that trailhead.
Beautiful photos. Thanks for mentioning about people defacing nature.
Knock on wood, the piece of equipment that I've damaged is a UV filter that I scratched.
As soon as I saw the b-roll of the names, I got a little heated. Glad you said something.
I agree. People need to stop ruining nature. I went to Lake Tahoe and I photographed bonsai rock and there graffiti everywhere.
Scaring me too.
