As an artist, one doesn't show what is there. It is the process of allowing the viewer to "see" what isn't there. And you summed it up exactly with your a statement of "showing what you've experienced" in your work. Excellent thought and video. Thank you for sharing this...
I am not in the least bit, an abstract painter. With that said, the motivations such as what your painting says about you and how what you are painting makes you feel are just as important for more realistic artists. For that reason and that I adore your art, I pop in from time to time to see what you are up to. I always leave with something important that I can apply to my own style of watercolor painting. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful use of color, your instinctual processes and your talent. I find both you and your art to be a great blessing.
I've been working on a desert scene and I think from this "lesson " you've shown me that I should try yet again and rearrange it! This will be no. 6! But you really helped me so much. Thank you!
I love the softness in the sky against the crisp darks of the foreground. I agree that one can find more freedom and spontaneity in repeating paintings. I find that's when my own style grows stronger. Thank you Angela!
Angela, as a new painter I found myself frustrated and I put my watercolor away for awhile. Then I watched one of your videos and I pulled them out again. You're a great teacher. Thank you.
I just found this video...SOOOOO EXCITED TO TRY IT TOMORROW....purple is my favorite color. I'm VERY NEW to watercolor and so far, I'm loving your channel....thank you!
I have had it my mind that doing a first and then subsequent painting(s) of the same scene or object is very important for experimenting and learning. It was nice to see someone of your skill level reinforcing the idea that attempting a given painting more than once is important for incrementally improving artistic ability and the painting itself. Thank you for being being open and honest as a teacher - the best teachers are the one's where you feel they are not holding back in demonstrating how they were once where you are now as a student and how they got to where they are as a skilled artist.
I love your work...I painted in my younger years while my boys were in school. i had a very successful painting at that time. I am now 78 and picking it up again. I can not believe what is available on line. I am very happy I found you.
I learned to paint before UA-cam and it's so wonderful to be able to see and share resources to help artists grow. It's a new world of availability, for sure!
Yes! Redoing a paint is not declaring the other(s) a failure, instead exploring more of the feelings that the image evokes ;) Thank you for a beautiful opportunity, teacher ;)
Wow! It's perfect. I love this painting and those streaks in the sky. It's a beautiful scene, a beautiful sunset and you painted it well. I am glad that you kept the foreground simple. By the way, I love green and purple together!!!Great video - thanks!
This was a very nice demo. Thank you. I really like your thinking process, not just about the painting process but also about the, let's call it, philosophy, of making art. Well done. :)
A really genuinely honest way of showing me how to get a natural sky and makes it look so easy more practice time for me im thinking Thank you for sharing this ❤️
It had never occurred to me to try and evoke what I feel when I paint. l thought I should be painting my interpretation, not feelings. Thank you, Angela.
Angela - you constantly amaze me - still trying to paint more loosely and not create mud! Love your style and want to adopt it, because it is what my "feeling" of what watercolor should look like. Still struggling, still trying! Love your philosophy and style!
The sky is feeling awesome, so beautiful. You are such a gifted teacher, I feel blessed to watch as you explain your thoughtful, feeling decisions about your next move and colors. Just so helpful. Thank you very much. I’ve been painting with acrylics for decades and now at almost. 77 I’ve become entranced by W/Cs. I’ve been watching your videos on my tv for 3 months and others as well, but you are the best. Loved the 4 studies on one pg that I just watched. Thanks for making free videos for those of us who cannot afford to pay for lessons.
Hi Angela! I’m so excited to have found your channel! This is a gorgeous painting. Watercolor is so intimidating for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Angela, you are a very good teacher......I have been trying to paint more intuitively and your lessons really do help me. I just started watercolour last year ....it is quite the opposite of my usual acrylic painting....but I am progressing and feel that I am ' loosening up '.... I look forward to more of your instruction. Thanks so much.
Interesting that when you added those stronger clouds, I suddenly noticed the pink in the Sky. Beautiful ! Now this Painting is ALL about the Sky as everything in the composition now points to it & that huge expanse of green field takes a second seat.
Thank you, Angela, for saying it's okay to do over a painting. I'm currently painting a landscape of a family's beef farm. It's been in the family for over 100 years. They want a landscape that shows a broken down barn, some cows and the green land. The only problem is, the only photo I have to go by was taken in the winter when the large expanse of land is brown. The trees are only dry limbs and, it is out of focus.....LOL. I'm on my second try. Talk about using my intuitive imagination! This lesson you just posted helped a lot and gave me permission to add purple for my darkest darks.....love it. I have a touch of Aliziren Crimson in the sky. So, even tho I've treated the bushes and trees in the distance with a muted green.....I'm going to add a light glaze of purple in front of them......they reach all the way across the painting. Of course, when I do that, I have to use the purple other places, such as shadows on the dominant Oak tree by the falling down barn. I'll also put it in the shadows of the barn and shadows under the black cows. This painting isn't going to be as loose as I'd like it to be because, my customer is very explicit on what they want to see in the painting. Sorry this is so long. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. When I finish this commission, I'm going to do my own loose landscape.
Redoing is my theme song! I'm finally at a point where I embrace painting a picture several times. My granddaughter wanted a Stargazer Lily. I made five paintings...finally, the 5th painting made me smile and I knew that was the one. On another note, Angela, welcome back to this Friday evening!
LOVE how you created this sky, Angela. Secondly, learning the fabulous word "crepuscular." I appreciate your extensive vocabulary and grammar. I learn on ALL levels in one of your tutorials. Thank you! Frances (Fanna) Turano Happy owner of: "If You Can't See the Forest, Let Go of the Trees."
wow! This was been my best painting experience with you in ever!.. I was totally with you the whole way and could feel the emotions as you explained it. I can't wait to create a painting that gives me a repeat of this class experience. REALLY GREAT STUFF! THANKS Angela, I really enjoy working with you and learning as we go along. I wish I could package what I am experiencing. Afraid I'll wake up tomorrow and won't be able to recapture it. This is fun. Thanks again.
Thank you Angela for another jam-packed vid, your information and instruction is feeding my needs as an (dare I say?) intermediate w/c artist wannabe. You really know how to share and encourage. Thanks for letting me know in this (yet another free tutorial) about the ways I can access more time with you in all your internet offerings. I continue to save toward attending an in-person workshop with you, somewhere, some time.
You are a true inspiration to everyone and such an amazing teacher. I have never learned so much as I do from you talking through your painting process and through your teaching. :)
Hi Angela, the painting is beautiful. I think you did a great job of painting this scene in the reference photo. Your right not supposed to be exactly like the photo, its how you interpret what you looking at is what you paint. Thanks for sharing.😊
You sent me on a hunt to find the first theorist who wrote about signs and symbols - using cave drawings as an example and I cannot find it!! Anyway, because I learned that I can really understand what you are saying about signs and symbols. Funny what will resonate with you! Good stuff Angela.
Just wonderful!!! Admire your simplicity in telling the watercolor story... your living a watercolor painting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Have you published a book of your work or workshops you have done?
Great demonstration...absolutely beautiful and love the colour combinations you used in the sky..Am heading over to your site to check out the information on your new course!! Thanks..
An other interesting video. Hope to do your new course. Love your way of teaching and content. Very helpful. I think I have 7 courses under my belt with you now, which helped me so much to grow as an artist. Thank you.
It was very interesting watching you credit your watercolor landscape, because you worked on dry paper bringing the wet washes in a bit at a time, without creating back washes. I usually work wet in wet for the first layer, so that could be an interesting technique to try. I was also surprised to see you leave hard edges in the sky. Altogether, after almost 50 years of painting, you definitely showed me some different techniques. I would really like to know more about how you have painted internationally. Thank you.
Taylor D. Angela, I especially love this painting! It did seem to come together from emotion and in your personal artistic style. This painting evokes emotion in me as I watch you create. One thought I have is I know every single artist, creator, presenter that participated in the recent Sketchbook Revival will benefit from not only your painting; yet also your personal descriptive nature. I have forwarded on to some. **I am eager to sign up and enjoy your new Landscape Course. Thank You!!
Hi Angela, I love this painting so much. I love the purple that you used throughout and I especially love the squiggle arch in the sky (right) is just beautiful. Is that a happy accident or do you think you could recreate that effect again? I love your lipstick, too! :)
I've never liked watercolor because it's too abstract and loose. My attitude changed completely when I heard what you said at 4:55. I get it now. Thank you!
Angela! Not only do I LOVE LOVE LOVE this painting, I've watched it a gazillion times! Your sky here is exquisite! I want to buy this painting. Is it possible? Wow what a brilliant piece... Frances (Fanna( Turano Denver, CO USA
I've been watercoloring for about a year and I have seen progress, but is there a faster way to learn then just watching youtube videos? I feel like maybe I need an actual art class. I feel like I need to learn to trust myself and be more creative, but when I do it doesn't always look like I want it to. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
I am not seeing where to sign up for "Heart-Led Landscapes in Watercolor" on your site. (????) I really love your philosophy about painting watercolors.
Hi Angela, beautiful painting . I would love to know the name of that beautiful blue that you used in the sky or did you mix it yourself ? If so , what were the colour combinations? Thanks for a very upbeat and informative channel .
It is so lovely..thanks Angela❤

I’m mesmerized in the first 5 minutes. The sky is just unbelievable!

I really loved the discussion of the journey from what we see to what we feel and what we want to express.Thank you.
I think this is my favorite painting and video of your yet. Watercolor Mastery was transformative. Can’t wait to experience this new class.
I love the softness in the sky against the crisp darks of the foreground. I agree that one can find more freedom and spontaneity in repeating paintings. I find that's when my own style grows stronger. Thank you Angela!

Wonderfully said.
Thanks
Great video!
I agree 100%!
".... of experiments...." but yes, well said
I love those skies that give you a sense of depth and drama - you can feel it expanding as it comes overhead.
Angela, as a new painter I found myself frustrated and I put my watercolor away for awhile. Then I watched one of your videos and I pulled them out again. You're a great teacher. Thank you.

That sky is just killer. I'm very impressed.
So glad I have been able to introduce you to several people here in our Art Club retirement community. You are better than ever! Larry
