Let's give Qual some credit. He figured out and learned the defensive spell from seeing it once. If he had the opportunity to run wild and acquaint himself with recent developments in magic, Frieren would've had a way tougher nut to crack.
Did you just judge those fine upstanding dessert loving men by their looks luke? I don't think you caught it, but Eisen said his favorite food was sour grapes. If you recall from the previous episode Fern was complaining that Frieren spent ages obtaining a spell to turn grapes sour. This shows again why Frieren loves magic, she doesn't, she loves the smiles it brings to people she cares about, she loves magic because that's what causes those smiles. Also, while Frieren is undoubtedly strong, that's not the point being made here. It's not that Frieren was strong, it's the importance of time. If we go back 80 years we go to 1943, WW2. This was the time of the development of the v2 rocket and more, the ability to attack cities from different countries all together. From the standpoint of any other war in history the power that the nations involved had would seem biblical....but now? We'd laugh at those pathetic excuses for bombs and fighter planes. Even our nukes have gotten 1000 times stronger. Qual was terrifying, the speed with which he analysed and learned that defensive spell was insane. Had he been allowed to live he might have become a major threat again in no time.
Nah that's only one element to it. She just loves collecting miscellaneous magic like polishing statue, making paper planes fly further, make sure you won't have egg shells when you break your egg. She'll make the whole party change their course for a side quest just to get some random magic. She DOES love magic and is collecting it as a hobby. The smiles, that's bonus to her.
@@rabela1810 False. Incorrect. Wrong. Fellacious. Untrue. Mistaken. Foolish. She repeatedly states that she likes magic somewhat and that the reason she collects spells is because a fool praised her.

5:40 The "gulp" subtitle corresponded to her onamatopeia / SFX in Japanese "gokuri". Japanese has TONS of sound effect words and they are commonly incorporated into speech. For example, any time you see the word "fluffy" translated, it's often just people saying "fuwa fuwa" which is the sound effect for rubbing one's hand over a fluffy surface like fur. You also frequently hear Japanese speakers in anime say, "Jeeeee" ("Jii" in Japanese) when staring at someone which might be translated directly or as just a "*Stares*" subtitle, etc. Either way, that is another SFX term for the act of staring.
it's not that Frieren is super strong (I mean she is, but that’s the point). This demon is also super strong. But it was not a question of power. He was simply ahead of his time in terms of magic development. His spell was so good that no one could defeat it no matter how strong you were. So people studied his magic, invented defenses against it...made it a fundamental spell for all magicians...now it's just a "standard attack spell." Any beginner now knows how to use it or defend against it. Still impressive. His spell laid the foundation for the magic development for future generations. He immortalized himself in history.
The voice actor actually does a ton of voices. Chise Hator from Anctient magus bride, Tome from Mob psycho 100. Klem from How not to summon a demon lord, Juno from beaststars, hinatsuru from, demon slayer, Mjurran from that time i got reincarnated as a slime, Vivy from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. Just to name a few.
HMMM... about that RPG side quest analogy...Himmel's party did cleared LOTS of side quest during their 10 year journey itself. I think it is more appropriate to say that Frieren is playing the New Game+ or new DLC content. Frieren's VA Tanezaki Atsumi is truly talented. In contrast to many VA who are famous for very recognizable voices. Atsumi's voice is VERY VERSATILE and it's near impossible to tell it's the same person. She also got married just not too long ago.
The dessert recommendation scene actually makes a lot of sense. Those dudes were toking on a hooka and I doubt it was tobacco. A couple of stoned adventures are the perfect people to ask for yummy recommendations.
Here's a fun little thing that's really easy to miss. In episode 2 there was a brief (1-2 second) flashback of Fern summoning a small swarm of ephemeral butterflies and being delighted about it, and the hairpin Frieren got her has a primary design that could pass as either a flower or a butterfly.
and spoiler; Sein later buys her a pouch with a butterfly on it for her birthday. It's beautiful how it resonates with the theme of ideas being passed on and living on in others, even knowledge about specific people. It's not unlike Heiter saving Fern, because it's what Himmel would do or like Eisen tricking Frieren to help her, because it's what Heiter would do. God, I love this anime.
As far as Frieren having a cold personality it goes with her name which is German for 'Freeze'. Most all of the characters names are German and relate to them somehow. Fern translates to 'Remote' As for how strong Frieren is you will find out in episodes 8 and 9.
The ending song, “Anytime Anywhere” by Milet is as beautiful as the anime. Arguably the best ending song of the season. It really does blow my mind that Frieren’s VA also does Anya’s in Spy x Family. She’s so talented.
Personally I really like how they depict the demons in this series. Not going to get into it because it'll be fleshed out in later episodes, but it is very good considering how often antagonists are depicted nowadays.
23:49 I think this has less to do with how strong Frieren is, but more with the properties of the passage of time and it's effects on research and technology. Imagine you're a foot soldier, fighting against a tank in WW1. You can't destroy it but somehow seal it for 80 years. 80 years later you return with an Abrams tank, and your once invincible opponent can not inflict any damage on you, and destroying them is as easy as calmly pressing a button.
Better analogy: You are a fighter pilot during the first sighting of a Me-262. Your piston aircraft is going to struggle, so you seal it and come back 80 years later with an F-22.
Fern is the VA for Mercury Suletta (Ichinose Kana) from Gundam the Witch from Mercury. I reconized her pretty quickly heh. Anya's VA (Tanezaki Atsumi) does such a different voice. :) I guess they both have parts in Doctor Stone, one is Hanada Nikki (blond strong lady) and the other is Ogawa Yuzuriha (the brown haired high school friend).
Just came from your original reaction on Patreon! Great call again! Frieren met Fern 20 years after the death of Himmel, so Fern was 8 when they met. Speaking of Frieren's VA, she plays another PERFECT role in "Dragon Quest, the Adventure of Dai". It's a 100-episode show, so it could be another recommendation for a big reaction series.
@@MarcioHuser Ah, totally right. We can tell from this episode that her birthday is in late summer or automn, and they clearly met in automn from the first lecture scene in ep2 with fallen leaves. So they've been together for a little less than 7 years.
Every year for nearly 50 years, Himmel visited the village to ensure Qual was still sealed ... in those 50 years, Frieren helped develop defensive magic that would help her defeat Qual once and for all.
You can find many such cafés in old European cities built on hills (for defensive purposes). Valetta and Victoria in Malta, Prague in Czechia, Split in Croatia… I highly recommend Budapest too.
Probably the case, yeah. But also, even "rough" people wouldn't pick a fight for *literally* no reason. They might pick a fight for petty reasons, but not for no reason. And why would you pick a fight against someone who just wants some sweets?
frieren really is the funniest shit whenever when they introduce new characters and you are german. oh i wonder what "suffering" is going to be as type of character. could be absolutely anything
A skull, a potion that dissolves clothes, a textbook, a hair ornament ... I'm guessing that they've been together for 4 years now ... Intimidating looking adventurers who turn out to be friendly guys is one of my favorite tropes. I'd love a follow-up episode where Fern runs into the same adventurers, but they look normal - her seeing them as intimidating was just due to her being young and inexperienced.
I think the priest died aroung Year 25. Last episode it was year 26 and this one is year 27. Around 2 years now, maybe. But they spent all the past seven years together, above that. Long enough to leart about and get close to anyone. At least for mere humans like us 😁
Freiren met Fern 20 years after Heimel's death. It's now 27 years after Heimel died. So Fern has been Freiren's apprentice for 7 years. Fern said in this episode that she is 16 now. Subtract 7 from 16, and you get 9. Fern was 9 years old when she met Freiren.
@@ImFrelled Right, but I'm guessing that Frieren and Fern have been traveling together for 4 years. First year: "Oh, I like this skull. Maybe Fern will, too." Raw Magic power in Frieren is dependent on two factors an inborn talent of affinity and age. As a basically pseudo immortal race and somebody with great talent she has insane reserves. She didn't show her full power against Qual and the like in the past as she wanted to uphold the illusion of struggle to blind the demon king from understanding the true extent of her power. The demons call her Frieren the Slayer, but the other races call her The Mage of the End.
28:26 that's how I felt when I finish also the ep 3. Next ep it feels the completed opposite XD. I guess that was why they put the 4 first ep the same week
Basically yes Frieren starts as a post-game story and an amazing one No worries the DLC of the game is coming or Frieren the game 2 comes within the next episodes and it will not feel like a post game story anymore after
It is realy nice how power is depicted in this anime. qual didn't get weaker while sealed away and frieren didn't become much stronger. she was barly involved in that fight after all. fern was able to keep him at bay as a young mage, dispite fighting one of the most dangerous demons of his time. he was just beaten by technological advancements. 80 years ago it was the most deadly spell known to men but for fern, it is just a regular combat spell. it is like going back in time to get the red baron into our age and then he gets shot down by a beginner pilot, just because he now has an F16 while the red baron still has his biplane.
It's like, in a world of swords, the guy developed a muzzle loader but in the time he was sealed away, the world developed ballistic weave and automatic rifles.
Qual is like what the atomic bomb was for us. Absolutely terrifyingly powerful when they appeared. But fast forward 80 years and now the two bombs dropped during World War 2 are 1000 times weaker than what we have now. Its not that Frieren is super strong (even if she is), but its that Qual has missed out on "a mere" 80 years of development. Its like if someone used WW2 tanks in 2024. He's now way behind. We dont use cars from 1980. That's what Qual is doing when he was unsealed. Running a car from 1944.
I have a bone to pick with this episode. The big bad demon casts his magic *after* Fern puts up her little defense shields. He should just be able to weave the attacks around. Fern should be putting up the tiny shields each one at the last possible second to intercept each attack. Would have been WAY cooler visually. Each shield blinking into existence just to block the attack at that moment and then blinking out.
I actually started the manga because I didn't want to wait any longer and...Spoiler I'm looking forward to the arc where we meet the Serie in the anime
Yeah, she's probably the oldest living being in existence outside of those giant sky dragons with forests on their backs. She's definitely a fun character as well.
Missing the commentary and having it completely muted during the fight made me think that one of my devices failed and i was trying to figure out what happened.
How dare you luke for judging those fine gentlemen who loves desserts just based from their looks (spits on ground) Nah sorry for pulling your jeets luke I love you.
I’m sorry. Cancelling out the video audio is one thing, but also making it so we can’t even hear you speaking at all for the whole scene is too annoying to listen to. I can’t watch any more if that’s what’s gonna happen.
16:30 she's emotionally immature, and since elves don't procreate that much, she doesn't understand the human perspective of love and affection. Some of us view our pets the same way. You can mean the whole world to them and to you they're beings that will eventually pass
You completely missed the point where Qual's magic became obsolete in 80 years... 80 years ago Qual was boss level. But in 80 years where he was offline, players in the world all gained 10 levels. The point of this story was to describe humanity's speed of advancement as seen from immortal's points of view. Not everything is just about "how strong Frieren is". As you will see, that is barely the point in this anime. Frieren is powerful, but she's not invincible, and she's by far not even the most powerful within this universe. The point of this story - and she keeps making that point to others - is that she relies on her teammates and strategies to overcome challenges and overwhelming foes. If this were just about her kicking butts with her invincibility then how would it be distinguishable from those other isekai crap. Yes you are busy with other tasks it's understandable but it would indeed be sad if you are too distracted to focus and notice details and produce insightful reactions.
Humans have so little time compared to elves and demons. As a result, they are desperate to innovate and develop before they die, to help humanity survive among undying creatures. A similar attitude exists in the real world too. The only difference is that the motive is to achieve our own sort of immortality by making a mark on history great enough to never be forgotten.
I know that people maybe want you to watch these kind of shows but if you really really want a crazy good anime then please watch Vinland saga. Trust me. If you have time to watch all these shows then might as eell watch some shows that are good. I cant imagine in any world where you wouldnt like vinland saga.

"Heh heh. I'll show you around to a nice desert, if ya know what I mean >; )" ... "So to recap, make a left at x street then turn right on y street, follow the stairs up and you'll come to this lovely shop with a great view of the ocean. Best deserts in town for real!"

*Day 169* of recommending the *Beyblade openings* . There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order.

Frieren's VA Tanezaki Atsumi is truly talented. In contrast to many VA who are famous for very recognizable voices. Atsumi's voice is VERY VERSATILE and it's near impossible to tell it's the same person. She also got married just not too long ago.
Who's the lucky man married Tanezaki?
@@TheMightyCrucibleKnight184Miyazaki Yu, also a VA, not as famous though
@@rabela1810 thanks.
The dessert recommendation scene actually makes a lot of sense. Those dudes were toking on a hooka and I doubt it was tobacco. A couple of stoned adventures are the perfect people to ask for yummy recommendations.
Here's a fun little thing that's really easy to miss. In episode 2 there was a brief (1-2 second) flashback of Fern summoning a small swarm of ephemeral butterflies and being delighted about it, and the hairpin Frieren got her has a primary design that could pass as either a flower or a butterfly.
and spoiler;
Sein later buys her a pouch with a butterfly on it for her birthday.
It's beautiful how it resonates with the theme of ideas being passed on and living on in others, even knowledge about specific people.
It's not unlike Heiter saving Fern, because it's what Himmel would do or
like Eisen tricking Frieren to help her, because it's what Heiter would do.
God, I love this anime.
As far as Frieren having a cold personality it goes with her name which is German for 'Freeze'. Most all of the characters names are German and relate to them somehow. Fern translates to 'Remote'
As for how strong Frieren is you will find out in episodes 8 and 9.
I still think that Fern is the actual plant. Since the author likes using terms of nature for the characters. Himmel=Sky, Eisen=iron and so on.
The ending song, “Anytime Anywhere” by Milet is as beautiful as the anime. Arguably the best ending song of the season.
It really does blow my mind that Frieren’s VA also does Anya’s in Spy x Family. She’s so talented.
when you cut off the audio for the episode to avoid copyright a lot of the times we can't hear you commentating
Frieren on top this season🎉
Personally I really like how they depict the demons in this series. Not going to get into it because it'll be fleshed out in later episodes, but it is very good considering how often antagonists are depicted nowadays.
That really surprised me, the way they depict the demons 😁
"How strong is Frieren?"
Yes.
Indeed.
@@emberthecatgirl8796 The only problem with this is that late model P51s and P47s already could content with 262s
Given she states she is now 16 at Year 27 after Himmel's Death, that would place her more like 9
@@MarcioHuser Ah, totally right.
That scene where the dudes told Frieren about the desert is just so damn hilarious ahahaha
Never judge a book from its cover, heh? 😁
You can find many such cafés in old European cities built on hills (for defensive purposes). Valetta and Victoria in Malta, Prague in Czechia, Split in Croatia…
I highly recommend Budapest too.
the adventurers probably knew as soon as she walked in not to mess with Frieren.
Probably the case, yeah.
But also, even "rough" people wouldn't pick a fight for *literally* no reason. They might pick a fight for petty reasons, but not for no reason.
And why would you pick a fight against someone who just wants some sweets?
This show is just a masterclass in storytelling, imo.
I can't believe a character that dies in episode 1 might end up being "Best Boy of the Year". Himmel is such a great character.
In the Last Episode she gathered a spell which makes grapes Sour, fern siad its useless, this episode we got to know, taht it is eisens favorite food.
frieren really is the funniest shit whenever when they introduce new characters and you are german. oh i wonder what "suffering" is going to be as type of character. could be absolutely anything
the hat on the stone probably meant that they were still there until after the strawhat guy died
Maybe Fern will, too."
Second year: "Oh, Fern is like Himmel, so maybe she'll like this potion."
Third year: "Okay, here's a book. I'm not selling it back."
Fourth year: "Alright ... Fern's a girl, so maybe some jewelry ..."
-Opening suggestions:
1. Ergo Proxy, "Kiri" by Monoral
2. The Big O, "The Big O! The Show Must Go On!"
3. World's Finest Assassin, "Dark Seeks Light" by Yui Ninimiya
4. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" by Egoist
5. Mobile Suit Gundam, all openings
6. Schwarzesmarken, "White Forces" by Fripside
7. Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex & 2nd Gig, "Inner Universe" & "Rise" by Origa
-Other suggestions:
1. Wagakki Band, Aria of Life (MARS RED opening)
Dark Seeks Light is quite good song. Nice suggestion. And Inner Universe is just fabulous 😁
I would also add Rozen Maiden "Kinjirareta Asobi" by ALI Project
@@darkelfling65anything from Ali Project is fantastic: Coppelia Hitsugi (Noir), Yuukyou Seishunka (Code Geass) and Kyoumu Densen (Another) are my favorites
Merkur(Mercury) Pudding , said by the Witch from Mercury (Fern VA is the same as Suletta Mercury voice actor)
Fern isn't just any apprentice mage, she is the prodigal student of one of the greatest magic users who has ever lived.
i believe frieren is one of the realistic elf ever createt, its a very deep charakter.
Raw Magic power in Frieren is dependent on two factors an inborn talent of affinity and age.
6:12
Seeing ur reaction to the 'Moe gap' here makes my day
the spells frieren learns seem to be for others like the one to clean the statues for himmel and turn grapes sour for eisen
Basically yes Frieren starts as a post-game story and an amazing one
No worries the DLC of the game is coming or Frieren the game 2 comes within the next episodes and it will not feel like a post game story anymore after
Freiren's ED is really great, and I love it, but IMO Undead Unluck's ed song is even better.
In the next episodes, you will see how powerful freirin is. Especially in the exam arc
Fern and the box she went lil on Metal gear solid rout lol
Ep 3, 27 years after Himmel's death, around 6 months after ep 2 (26 years after + around 6 months looking for the flower)
G.O.T. reads?! What a legend
I have a bone to pick with this episode. The big bad demon casts his magic *after* Fern puts up her little defense shields. He should just be able to weave the attacks around. Fern should be putting up the tiny shields each one at the last possible second to intercept each attack. Would have been WAY cooler visually. Each shield blinking into existence just to block the attack at that moment and then blinking out.
the most ironic thing about qual is that despite being a demon creature with very long life he still got outplayed by time
I actually started the manga because I didn't want to wait any longer and...Spoiler
I'm looking forward to the arc where we meet the Serie in the anime
exam arc
Yeah, she's probably the oldest living being in existence outside of those giant sky dragons with forests on their backs. She's definitely a fun character as well.
your face when you said the potion is useless is soo funny 🤣🤣 2:01 - 2:18
Beautiful story and animation, glad to see MADhouse back in business:)
this is why jp dub is the best their vocal range is insane they can sound like a 5 year old child or a mature hot woman in an instant
Missing the commentary and having it completely muted during the fight made me think that one of my devices failed and i was trying to figure out what happened.
Is your reacrtion to the ending posted? I would really see you react as I see you absolutely loved it.
The only other ED for this year that competes for me is Red:birthmark from g-witch
How dare you luke for judging those fine gentlemen who loves desserts just based from their looks (spits on ground)
Nah sorry for pulling your jeets luke I love you.
That's the episode where states her actual age, and I totally forgot about it 😅
"maybe a birthday present?"
bro got so good at predicting the plot!! 🤣 thank you for the reaction, as always!! love watching it everytime it drops ❤️
Whenever someone shines a light on something that seems outside the main story... I get suspicious 😂
Why did the volume disappear all of a sudden??
It might look like an easy fight but it was far from it.
And Fern is in no way on an normal apprentice level.
Love the reaction!
Funny for me is that Frieren is always lying about her power, even to her comrades.
Love your reaction keep it up
Frieren is top 3 in his verse
Gotta say, the audio of the show in these reactions really messes with me (is it fading in and out?). I get it's done for copyright reasons, but man is it a rough countermeasure.
Imagine when and if he react to To Your Eternity anime after this one. 😅
Frieren don't know she has been followed . Fern conceal mana abilty is to notch and good beyond her master. Can say she is genius to hide mana present.
Did you mute yourself during the fight? or was it for copyright?
I think it was for the copyright
"Heh heh. I'll show you around to a nice desert, if ya know what I mean >; )"
...
"So to recap, make a left at x street then turn right on y street, follow the stairs up and you'll come to this lovely shop with a great view of the ocean. Best deserts in town for real!"
*Day 99* of requesting a reaction to the following openings:
*Chivalry of a Failed Knight* op
*Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress* op
*Kiznaiver* op
You could make a multiple op reaction for this.
2:40 WAIT!!! Have tou cheated us and watched it prior to this react? 😁
This episode taught me how valuable trust is ☕
A shame that the whole dialogue with Qual to completely muted
Oh well...
aw come on, if you wanted to cut the music i get it, but you could have had least put subtitle so that we can see what you said!
the demon mage should have not died qwq
Well tbh intel pentium 1 was awesome, at least few years ago😅
And you alright?
Paradox Live Op reaction???
Frieren is rather bad with hide and seek, no ranger or thief after all.
I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order.
who is even watching this show
Whats Frieren's pov on humans? Just like how we see our pet animals. We know some of them are young and old, we know they have short lives compared to ours and even though we barely understand each other, we still manage to connect our emotions to them
