No Doubt Live was always better than the studio cut. It's raw because the band was built for live. The only reason they got popular fast was because of Gwen as their front girl. The same reason why Faith No More became popular, their live shows is always better than the studio cut.

The guy on bass guitar and Gwen had an affair while in the band. He broke it off and she wrote all these songs about him and her sadness. He said it was so hard as she would go over the lyrics with him.

They had a definite ska vibe early in their career, and later as a solo act got a lot of flack for being a culture vulture with her heavy use of harajuku culture and stating she was Japanese. I don’t think sure meant it to be offensive in any way, but it’s just enthusiastic about different musical styles and vibes
