What a beautifully dissonant work of art! There are many subtle shifts from different drum sounds per section to layered vocal effects that ebb and flow to perfectly compliment the dynamic force of Chino's vocals!
It's incredibly fun and inspirational for our own artistic pursuits to dive into these multitracks and study how all these nuances fit together... Join me!
That bass line though.
*After hearing isolated vocals*
Those vocals though.
After seeing them live in San Diego.
My life though
such an underrated deftones song, glad you picked this one
Underrated..?! Look at the Spotify..
One of my absolute favorites of theirs
It's not very underrated, it was mentioned on the album's hype sticker and is one of their top 10 most streamed songs.
Why isn't Hole In The Earth underrated? I don't agree with Saturday Night being the worst deftones album to most and not addressing it's only nationally released single first. I don't understand deftones fans and it's gotten so bad I don't understand deftones.
@@inkult-1887 Mein was also released as a single in March 2007
dude his voice is so magical.
I literally got the chills and teared up the second the chorus vocals hit. One of the most unique singing voices ever.
Chino's melodies and comfort in his dynamic range is so organic and artful. You have a great ear and ability to articulate everything you hear! Thanks Chris!
Chinos in a class of his own
I've been singing along in the car to a lot of Deftones. The dynamics between screams and the breathy ethereal parts are amazing
"Cherry Waves" one of those most haunting songs ever recorded in modern rock.
Chino always described their band's sound as "Mood Rock".
"Xerces" was also beautiful.
My personal favorite off of SNW is Kimdracula, a multi-track of that would be killer
Yes please do this one
You are truly spoiling us with these multi tracks. Thank you so much Chris.
My pleasure!
Lots of good insights too! Thanks from me, as well. 🙏
Chi Cheng was a true genius. Can't even fathom how he would think this stuff up and it just works!
I could literally watch you break down Deftones songs forever. Deftones have been my favorite band since 95 and hearing the songs broken down like this is like listening to them for the first time, which is a feeling I never thought I would get again. For me and every other Deftones fan this is amazing thank you Chris!
Totally undervalued album. That one grew on me with more listens when I first heard it a decade ago.
For me this is the last album,.where i can feel the kind of Deftones spirit which u can feel in white pony,..
It’s an unreal album . Just unreal. Watch the sunset while listening to XERCES
it’s a spiritual experience
@@_-_-_-Prof.BoskoBiathi-_-_-_ well… that’s because it’s the last album with Chi 🥹
@@kaydgaming I mean honestly every album I dig equally in their own way but yeah rip chi fosho :/
I liked it at first, but the more I listened... The crazier .. 😂
I might have a correction - Abe's drums are dragging(vs Chi's bass line). Whenever I'd cover their songs I could never get the feel or rhythm right, no matter what I did. But when I started slowing the timing down *just* to the point of being out of time with the beat, is when it made sense. I was pretty obsessed with it, and also Step's guitar tone.
Light bulb moment.
Added note: he said in interviews he hated his performance on this album bc he was self-conscious and reserved, bc of people's opinions on their previous album.
Where is that interview?
And yeah, I despise meeting Deftones "fans" as most of them only care about White Pony.
Self titled is a fucken masterpiece I don’t care what anyone else says lol
@@MiguelRamirez-cr7gh It's definitely one of my favorites.
And at this point I'm pretty sure you're just the FBI agent assigned to my profile. 😂
@@CFChristian I swear I see you and a couple other dudes on the same videos all the time lol but I’m a couple of months behind you guys it seems
@@MiguelRamirez-cr7gh YESSSSS! self titled and Around the Fur are by far my favorites
I think the key thing I hear with Chino’s voice is actually an emphasis on head voice supported extremely well with the diaphragm, he keeps it very breathy but can maintain those notes with the use of diaphragm.
He has an amazing voice! Great observations!
My FAVORITE Deftones song!
Not enough love whatsoever!
Thank you for this!
It's like a fever dream, but a good one.
I just Love this Band. For 30 years they just are Amazing...
Chino Moreno >>>>>
So awesome job my dude, Xerses from Deftones could be your next project Saludos!
My thoughts exactly. Somewhat similar with the slower chord progression I think.
Yeeaahhhy unbelievable,..thanx chris,..deftones once more,..and cherry waves,.favorite song of my wife,.from a great album,.good job as always,..regards
de loused in the crematorium.... One of my favourite albums of all time!
@@joshuabush2569 i guess u mean comatorium,.not crematorium,...but ur right,.it's a masterpiece as well,..
@@_-_-_-Prof.BoskoBiathi-_-_-_ I do! Haha.. not sure how that happened it must have got autocorrected. Yes one of the greatest albums of all time!
one of my favourite deftones songs! epic and uplifting yet so sincere in its melancholy. people like to describe deftones as having a "dreamy" mood and it applies here, although without the massive electronic layers many of their later songs have but more layers of different instruments.
very glad you picked this one. an unexpected surprise!
I believe this is around the time he was having issues with his voice, too. Not my favorite band, but my friends loved them so I saw them a couple times about a decade ago. Chino is an amazing singer and performer, distinct underrated style imo.
I genuinely think this song is one of the greatest experimental rock/metal songs of all time.
Me too!
This is their most layered album for sure. I also like the writing, which is very atmospheric but the heavy stuff is very mathy and hard hitting with hints of post hardcore. Unfortunetly they went to a more straight forward approach in the next albums, and gotta say the last ones (Gore and Ohms) really fall short compared to stuff from SNW and before.
I agree with this 100%. Love ALL their albums but this was def something more unique. After Diamond Eyes its gotten a bit too straight forward. still love em
OHMS is one of their best most up to date album, your probably forgetting they won a Grammy last year.
This came up on recommended videos. I have a clock with the sheet music of Cherry Waves glossed onto it. Easily my favorite decoration in the house. 😊
Deftones is already a band that you hear something new every single time you listen to a song…even after 100 times……to have the friggen actual audio tracks to pick apart and listen to track by track is a friggen PRAYER answered for me…man I wish I could get my hands on those files and just spend a month locked away listening hahaha…. Thanks for the awesome video man, as usual!!!
Thanks for all your content Chris, specially this one!
Very Bono sounding, lots of inspiration from this breakdown
Thank you Chris, unbelievable session as usual.
Your channel definitely deserves more views. It has helped me and still helping me a lot on vocals and production.
Loved every minute; always learning something. Fantastic as always! 🤩
deftones are always great! really emotional and i was always curious what makes it sound so intimate to me. thanks chris!! waiting for more great stuff 🤍
Amazing Chris. Thank you for these Deftones deep-dives! Xx
You are the best ! thanks for this
This is my favourite deftones song! So fantastic to hear isolated tracks. thankyou!
This is so sick! SNW has to be one of my favorite albums ever. Top 3 favorite when it comes to Deftones. A truly unique album with a dark history which almost led to the band breaking up. Dark times leading up to it. And everyone emailing their parts instead of working together like they always did, in their studio (The Spot? I forget the name). Then there's the Bob Ezrin demos which are so sick! Finger of Death could've been an insane song! Stef's guitar parts are so heavy! Omfg I love it!!!!!! Download them! To anyone who claims to be a hardcore fan and hasn't listened to them, please do. It includes multiple versions of songs that made it and ones that didn't.
I appreciate this band’s talent even more now thanks to you!
Subbed & Thank you 🙏🏼
I'VE BEEN HOPING FOR THE ANALYSIS VID OF THIS SONG, NEVER THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA HAPPEN, LETS GOOOOOO
I always love your breakdowns. Especially if the Deftones
Thanks for this, seriously. Thanks thousand times.
such an incredible song thanks chris
Thanks for this budy You'r The Best !
Great video and that Chino emulatuon at the end, excellent 😁
Deftones is one of my favorite bands and cherry waves is one of my favorite songs! Thanks for doing this
Going by this band and Chino's other projects, the boy knows how to write and produce great songs!
Chills. Production is 🔥, thx for the scream tutorial.
The amount of saturation is amazing! I can't wait to experiment more on my next mixes.
You deserve over a million subscribers. You’re such a talented individual when it comes to music.
Fuck yeah!
I love Deftones so fucking much. And for a music nerd those kind of videos are amazing.
Thank you so much for your content!
One of the best Deftones songs ever. Thanks for the video!
YEAAAA LESSGOO CHRISS! Much love from Indonesia 🇮🇩
I’ve been obsessed with them lately and it’s funny but i love how you’re covering them lately. This is one of my favorite songs ever and top of them. The whole
Record its on. One of the best basslines ever
Wow!!! Thanks for explaining the fair use and how you work with it. Super cool to know. Everything about your channel is phenomenal. I’m a drummer. And collector. I do not do any type of sound or production. But you make everything so interesting. And I understand exactly (mostly everything) what points you make.
Super-cool lesson. I’m not really into the Deftones but really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Top Deftones song. If you like Cherry Waves, you’d love the vocals for 976-EVIL.
DE 🔥🔥
Man, love your videos. Thank you for all these very valuable insights!
18:53 example + chain.
Love these vids, your mix analysises and especially the analysis of Chino's voice and vocal processing is soo good! Would love to see you keep recreating the vocal processing of the vocals!
Thanks! Will do!
Thank you very much for this type of video isolating chino's voice and screams !! i WISH you could do more of this videos about deftones but with their heaviest songs ( like ROYAL, BLOODY CAPE, RAPTURE, or whatever song of their first album ADRENALINE). Im a huge fan of your content please do this more with deftones
brother, ur voice is amazing !!
love Chino's vocals... thanks for this
Thanks for this man. I love these, so great for understanding production. The Deftones’ soundscapes and mixes are like none other 👌🏻 those DRUMS!
Right??!!
11:29 that was honestly the most hillarious and yet acurrate way to describe Chino's singing lmao.
Love these videos man, and this is probably my favorite Deftones records alongside WP
Cherry waves is MY fav deftones track…..Shaun Lopez did a fantastic job mixing. Great vid. Thanks.
Love your videos and in depth analysis. It always teaches a great lesson and is inspiring.
Thanks Jamie! How are you doing?
@@chrisliepe You're welcome! I'm Good! Been creating new music and moving forward. How are you?
Doing great! Excited to hear about your next season!
@@chrisliepe So awesome to hear!!! . Thank you so much! I'm feeling the excitement!
That mix on the drums is FKNG INCREDIBLE
Ok, now I know what my playlist for work tonight will be! Deftones..
Chris you the Goatttt!!!
One of my favorite Deftones songs - Loved your analysis! Would you be able to do a video on Incubus? Specifically the song "Dig"? The vocals in that one have lots of range and broad dynamics that I think you'd be able to tap into really well
I looooove this song ✨ so cool it was featured here!
Thank you Chris! You have to get your hands on System of a down multitracks💪 Their complex harmonies are so hard to sing because they blend so perfectly in the studio mix🤔
i can hear chino got some huge bjork influence in his melodies and singing style.
Ah Chris you did an analysis I've been meaning to ask for. Loved this one😄😄😄😄😄😄😄🙌🙌🙌🙌
Glad you liked it!!
@@chrisliepe God bless brother😊🙌🙏🙏
One of my top 5 favorite Deftones songs
LOVE this song!!
This is awesome!
This is amazing.
Seriously man, I heard you singing over the track in the background at the beginning of your video, I had chills like I had just came out of a walk-in freezer. I know you don’t really do covers here but boy do I wish I could hear your voice over this entire song
I might just have to do some Deftones covers :)
@@chrisliepe Would kill to hear you cover some Deftones man. Loved this dissection and exploration of Cherry Waves, it’s such a complex song.
@@chrisliepe please!
THIS IS SO AWESOME
Chino is basically singing while feeling all the feelings that he transmitted to us. Because I know there’s a meaning and metaphor but for most people is a very emotional song.
Such an amazing bad. Love the Deftones.
Great video i love the Chino break downs so much. If I may make a song suggestion check out his side project +++(crosses) song "Bitches Brew" it has some of his best range of vocal techniques imo. Would love to hear you break it down. Cheers!
since you uploaded the bad deep dive i have watched as many of your videos as possible in every second of me time ive had - your passion and knowledge and articulation is so engaging and enjoyable thank you for giving us this content! hope you'll do something from MJs dangerous album at some point, much love x
Thanks for watching... I'm so glad you're enjoying so much. I'm looking for some Dangerous stuff for sure!
Ugh this is so cool!!!!
Nice to see this brilliant song getting some love!
Never Heard of ‘em
BUT this is so G R E A T!
i would love to hear a breakdown of bloody cape!
Cool, one of my favourites :)
Yeah I really love this song.
More Deftones, woho! Loooove that track
With good headphones / IEMs Deftones songs are just a full joy.
thank you for this!
You're so welcome!
Saturday Night Wrist is my favourite deftones album!
Well then, just found my new favourite channel
Yay :)
Deftones are so bad ass! Chino is an amazing vocalist!
Hey, Chris. You should do an analysis of Rody Walker from Protest the Hero. He has a kind of acrobatic and silly approach, especially on the earlier albums. His lyrics are also super clever too.
I'd love to see this type of breakdown of Beast in Black.
Their music gives me a very childish joy. Yannis Papadopoulos has many great tones as well. Very interesting.
Can't thank you enough so here's another one, thank you!
Hehe...You're very welcome!
Hey Chris - Crazy to be listening to this. I engineered that record with Chino and Shaun. Watching your videos now to learn to sing. I'd love to connect.
A lot of the subtle nuances mentioned, such as the band limiting in the middle was actually Chino just being Chino and backing in/out or moving his hands around his voice and the microphone. As if he knew by placement how the final result would sound. The delay heard on his voice as well was an actual Echoplex, tape and all. This was the most fun album I've ever worked on.
@@ryangorman3061the genius of musicians noone sees or hears about. Thanks for sharing and amazing work engineering. I bet that was epic
RIP CHI CHENG ! So great !
So sick to hear these as well as all the other multitracks you’re getting!
Hey Chris, I really like this "isolated tracks" series of videos. Seems to me lots of people are enjoying them. Do you have access to just about any isolated tracks you could ask for? The reason I ask is I think you'd get an absolutely tremendous response if you were to do an isolated tracks video of early Metallica!
They've had the greatest career a heavy metal band ever had and while James Hetfield is still singing remarkably well for a 59 year old heavy metal vocalist, there was something special about the aggression and ferocity in his voice in the Kill "Em All and Ride The Lightning albums. There was an edge to his voice then that I don't think we ever heard from him again quite to that extent. I especially like his shrieks in Hit The Lights!
I think I will ask about some early Metallica!
@@chrisliepe That would be great! James used to hit some high notes on songs like Hit The Lights - it was kind of like a shriek and it was really cool.
Hell yes Deftones !!
Greatest song ever created imo
