I think they both know exactly who they worked with esp in re to Sleepers. Both actors despite their greatness have acted in more poor movies than great ones. Sleepers was one of their better ones.
Robert DeNiro was almost Joaquin Phoenix in beard and sunglasses on Letterman level bad here. I kept expecting Dave to say to Bob: "Well, this has been a fascinating interview. I'm just sorry you couldn't have been here for it."
The genius of Letterman is highlighted in the way he handled that sometimes awkward interview. He played into the silences, delivered perfect quips and had the audience rolling.
Younger audiences who aren't familiar with Letterman won't appreciate his legendary style.... this interview went perfectly and so true his style. He made De Niro comfortable to be uncomfortable. Hoffman another legend. Miss these guys on the screen
Love it! That's the way all audiences should appreciate our great actors. For moments in time they entertain us and take us away from every day pressures. Salute!
After analyzing his way of being in shows and interview I believe mr Robert is not a showoff person ..quite protective of his personal and private life ..hating to be hypocrite and not comfortable in the glorifying hypocrisies world of shows and business show...etc
He suffers from massive anxiety. Its so hard to comprehend. A man loved and respected for his craft but out of the movie the character face to face he cant barely function.
OMG that was just gold! Letterman is incredible and those two were funny as hell. Robert is trying not to laugh at Letterman's jokes but he can't maintain composure in the end.
Yes it was. I was with him on it, too. The bad Vibes are killing it here... I bet Dustin made him come to the show with him. Dave'sbeen a good host in my opinion.
Well, I was a bit offended for De Niro. Hoffman touted "Midnight Cowboy". If De Niro had told me that he was my waiter on the night that Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, I sure would remember the story and tell it with respect. I'm Canadian and was 11 at the time and I've never ever forgotten the night that Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. Hoffman may have lost a friend with that one.
Yesterday... (applause and laughs) I went.... (woohooo!!!) to the... (more applause) bathroom (YEEAAHHH!!!) and took... (applause and more laughs) a... (more woohoos with laughs) shit... (ovation).
i hope people can take out the time to appreciate the fact that de niro is sitting on the couch in a certain way just so dustin hoffman doesn't look small..
This is really one of the best late night television talk show segments, ever...A lotta people point out the obvious: DeNiro doesn't really like this format, and is uncomfortable doing it...But he knows it's funny when he plays to that...
It's obvious De Niro is a shy man, sensitive to his environment (which is what makes him such a good actor), it doesn't have anything to do with being a dick. Letterman is more the guy who likes to be funny/in charge. They are just different personalities.
Noo, you also missed the point. De Niro just doesn’t like pricks like letterman, who is so full of himself. Why else would he look away every time he answers a stupid question from letterman, on the only show of its kind, where he never showed up for 30 years. It’s so apparent.
spruceguitar Neither of us missed the point. It’s a little of both. Robert is a reserved person initially in many of these settings, he always has been.
I don't understand why DeNirio said James Dean was one of the actors he admired, yet when Letterman tried to ask him to elaborate, he refused to answer the question. But, Loved Dustin 's response about Dean not withstanding the test of time. "Are you gonna feel that way about Us in 20 yrs"?
Absolutely. These two senior actors are rare breeds in the film and entertainment industry. The roles they played in or acted on were splendid. They make and turn movies to the highest form of entertainment.
DeNiro is the coolest guy on this planet...Dustin has to be the nicest guy. What a pair. Hoffman is still the greatest actor of his generation and funny!
Fricking hilarious. They are ALL in on this appearance... DeNiro is so awesomely dead pan.... Hoffman : " I'm the DeNIro whisperer." I fell off the chair laughing...
Funny interview. De Nero is a legend luv Dustin Hoffman in the Graduate. I actually won free tickets to see meet the fockers at city walk at Universal premiere. Saw Hoffman and Streisand in person that night I will never forget it. Thanks for posting.
@@maryellen968 What are you even talking about ? He doesn't like giving interviews, period. And has a thing against Letterman, there's just a few hosts where he can be himself.

I am just glad I grew up when both of these guys were churning out unbelievably great movies...
De Niro in interviews is one of De Niro's greatest roles
Genius reply

total dud
I wouldn't walk 10ft. to see De Niro, total dick weed!
@@bebo5558 Just like yourself then

Imagine being so iconic that you can't remember if you worked with brad Pitt or not
after you do 40 - 50 movies, it's not too easy remembering one specific film.......
@@mrmustangman but you gotta remember if you worked with someone like Pitt and that was the case with Letterman's question.
No is question was about the film sleepers not if hes ever workd 4 him but if he was in that film with them also
I think they both know exactly who they worked with esp in re to Sleepers. Both actors despite their greatness have acted in more poor movies than great ones. Sleepers was one of their better ones.
NOURA A I play in a band with different people all the time and I don’t remember most of the people that I played with
Love that opening ovation! They certainly deserve it.
absolutely agree!
2 giants in the movie world , pure fact.
People are saying this interview was horrible, but I think this is golden. This is balanced. Letterman did an excellent job with both of them.
Deniro's greatness comes from his looks and his acting. He really doesn't have anything to say.
David Letterman moderated this talk show so well, up to perfection with timely jokes
I know what you mean....but, it wasn't one of his easiest either.
Don Rickles was right about DeNiro. Being with him is like being alone.
He actually said that about Jerry Seinfeld
Clint Eastwood and Bob Newhart also fit the category.
lol just realized he said it about deniro as well lol
U guys talkin to me.... about the me's?!
DeNiro is sooo boring
Two legends 😊
Robert DeNiro was almost Joaquin Phoenix in beard and sunglasses on Letterman level bad here. I kept expecting Dave to say to Bob: "Well, this has been a fascinating interview. I'm just sorry you couldn't have been here for it."
Except that Joaquim was acting for his documentary. Lol
These three will never be duplicated. They represent American cinema and television at their finest.
I don't know what they represent, but I don't think it would be as a sweeping as you think.
Oh pleaseee
Thank goodness they wont be duplicated. Cocky posers.
"Well, you brought a good story down."
And then DeNiro's face
Nothing is funny about Bobby Kennedy's been shot. Then again pretty much everybody got shot in USA.
The genius of Letterman is highlighted in the way he handled that sometimes awkward interview. He played into the silences, delivered perfect quips and had the audience rolling.

Absolutely. He sets up the stage soooo perfectly, your literally caught up in the moment. Entertainment at its best! A true living legend!!
@@franciskarma7139
He did this all the time. People saw it as being rude sometimes but he was just making great television.
Its like Bob and Dustin smoked a joint before they went on! Lol!
Love it! That's the way all audiences should appreciate our great actors. For moments in time they entertain us and take us away from every day pressures. Salute!
Yes, but some how people think their opinions should be broadcasted on entertainment platforms.
i just like the little things that means a lot, like how they are both making sure to seat simultaneously! that's called respect.
Hoffman: "Are you gonna feel the same about us in 20 years?"
Letterman: "Well, not both of you"
CLASSIC Letterman !!
The best!
One of the best chat show one liners ever
I remember watching Midnight Cowboy at the 67 drive in theater when I was a teenager. Wow God i'm old !!
You know it's greatness when the host has to intervene to stop the audience from continuous standing ovation & clapping
After analyzing his way of being in shows and interview I believe mr Robert is not a showoff person ..quite protective of his personal and private life ..hating to be hypocrite and not comfortable in the glorifying hypocrisies world of shows and business show...etc
Seems like deniro didnt wanted to come but hoffman brought him
I agree ! DeNiro has been open for years about being uncomfortable being interviewed.
Who's this 'hoffman'?
Its just how he is
He can barely look at Letterman
Mr De Niro is not comfortable being praised for his work which is commendable.
Robert Deniro is so well composed, doesn't move a bit, while everyone laughed so loud at the jokes
He suffers from massive anxiety. Its so hard to comprehend. A man loved and respected for his craft but out of the movie the character face to face he cant barely function.
you can tell he did not want to be there
After you have been told you are greatest 500 times, it probably gets old.....It's like, "you can leave me alone now."....
Glad to live in the same period of time with such legends and many more…
Man. Dustin Hoffman. 84 years old. That seems impossible to grasp.
OMG that was just gold! Letterman is incredible and those two were funny as hell. Robert is trying not to laugh at Letterman's jokes but he can't maintain composure in the end.
Funny when Rickles almost managed to get Mr T to laugh : "youre ruining my tough guy image !" :p
Dustin Hoffman is a national treasure.
"How Long Have You Guys Been Married." Too Funny.
Hoffman is one of the classiest men in Hollywood. His whole demeanour...
6:23 The funniest part was when Letterman looked at his watch and said "Well Bob I know you got a car waiting."
Brilliant.
Yes it was. I was with him on it, too. The bad Vibes are killing it here... I bet Dustin made him come to the show with him. Dave'sbeen a good host in my opinion.

I've been watching Dave on his Netflix special which is fine, but here he's killing it. He was in his prime
Letterman truly was the best late night host. The way he moderates this with great questions, wit and perfect timing!
De Niro And Hoffman 2 Hollywood Legends!
Watching this reminds me...Indiana is so proud to have helped produce the genius that is David Letterman.
They fell into easy roles, Bob the silent one, Dustin the apologizer, and Dave the accuser. Hilarious. Great comedy.
Silent Bob?

Dave is working extra hard here. Asking incredible, thought-provoking questions.
Bob can’t hit the ball back at all. 💀
Bob did not even want to play. They must have been holding his mother hostage to even get him there. 😂
And Locke has no balls at all!
No Bob wasn’t going to play his game…touché
I remember this show!! I had just divorced at the time and I think it was the first time in months that I realllllyyyy laughed!!!

This interview is great, they're just having fun. I love it!
