Footage filmed by Dave Markey in the early 80s
Video by Antony Berrios
Lyrics:
In L.A. Basin, heroin was so passe
We had to find something cheaper
And not so far from West LA
We were all looking for a high different and new
When dope was hard to get
Codeine 4 and Doriden would have to do
On doors and fours, we take our chance
White punks on dope, perfect romance
On doors and fours in '83
When we got loaded taking loads, we'd all OD eventually
Was there a killer or did Jordan Hiller just have a death wish?
His parents didn't need to find their oldest son cold as a fish
When loads were finding the roads to Beverly Hills
Heroin and PCP were a safer bet compared to those six pills
On doors and fours, we never knew
Which one of us was turning blue
Why wasn't anybody scared?
'Cause we were teenagers on loads
So no one really fucking cared
Another good friend's heart explodes
'Cause all the punks are doing loads
But we're all still taking our loads
'Cause all the punks are doing loads
Our arteries and veins corrode
'Cause all the punks are doing loads
Los Angeles' punk scene slowly erodes
'Cause all the punks are doing loads
We lived on violent apathy
This was LA in '83
Straight out of the Hills of Beverly
Old LA punks, they never die from old age 'cause they all OD
R.I.P. to all my friends that had so much more going on in their own heads then we will ever understand..
one of the best things that I have ever read, mad love
agreed, including those that fell victim to other negative impacts... I could share on this if asked. Drugs can be bad
Good shit! That was a thoughtful comment . We all should hope for such optimism in people's hearts when they speak on us when we are gone one day!
Thank you
If you see this comment, I love you.

This is a slice of hardcore street history served up raw and nihilistic as it should be. Mike's writing is as strong as ever, NOFX kicks too much ass for one band
Lol, nihilistic as it should be? 🙄.
@@truth-rewound9317 right or wrong punk was nihilistic. We were a bunch of pissed, off malcontented, disenfranchised kids with no direction. Nihilism and violence were the natural outcome. Things changed over time, more positive messages, more positive scenes, but where this all came of age and where it started are 2 very different places and times. I think Doors and Fours paints a pretty accurate picture of that time. "We lived on violent apathy..." and it wasn't just LA in 83.
@@guerrillapress77 Yeah....Blink 182, I feel, is responsible for changing punk rock forever. :(
@@river_acheron How so? (Genuine question)
@@japgolly Prior to Blink 182, punk rock was (for the MOST part) political, raw, and intellectual.
Blink 182 (they were not the first, but they captured the zeitgeist) made it all about whiny high school problems that don't matter at all. "My girlfriend left me. Waa waa. I'm so lonely". All their songs were about like...depressed teenager problems or phony phone calls. Vapid crap. (Which is NOT punk rock at all, IMO) Also, they popularized that POP punk sound. I know they were not the first, but the were skyrocketed into fame, and then came the imitators, etc. I truly believe that is what led to punk rock becoming, well...emo. (Yes, there was something called 'emo' in the 80's but that was very different. I'm talking about 2000's pop punk emo which Blink 182 and bands like them started. In fact, I think the 'Dammit' album was the catalyst for it all.) I realize I could be slightly biased, as I always HATED Blink 182 with a seething passion. Even as a very young teenager I thought, "Why the Hell are these dipshits so immature?" Well, at least Tom DeLonge sings about aliens and space now. That's a least a step up from singing about girls and fart jokes.
Real punk still exists of course because no genre vanishes completely, (We still have Bad Religion, Rancid, NOFX of course, and The Vandals released their first album since 2004!) but punk rock's time in the sun is faded...at least for now. That's why I'm glad bands like NOFX are actually getting more darker and serious as of late. Even nihilistic. I think things are STARTING to improve a lot and rock in all forms is slowly coming back. *fingers crossed*
this video made me nostalgic and i wasn't even there
SAME
I was in the scene where I live. It got pretty crazy towards the end, when people started dying, dropping out of school, or getting expelled. But, I would do it all over again in a heart beat, you better believe it. Skipping school, taking a bus to Seattle, walking the streets, getting high, having a blast. Good times..
ALSO SAME
I was in the Charleston, SC punk scene the early to late 90s. It was so much like this. And now I’m gonna say goodbye.
Same here man, I think "ludes" were already illegal by the time I was born, but this still makes me think of "back in mah day..."
I am very impressed with the poetic depth of this song. Quite an emotional venture. Thanks NOFX!
Besides the decline, this feels like the longest NOFX song, ever
Ya, last time I heard this song in 99 on a lot of mushrooms, like I am now
Hahahah, I know, right. I didn't check the length, but I knew it was gonna be a longer one when I was a minute in and didn't hear any vocals, yet. Still, though, it doesn't feel that long. This song rips.

@@slashismyhommie8182 Its a new song.
Melvin singing “this was la in 83” is one of the all time great moments on a nofx record
After a lifetime of listening to hundreds of their songs millions times, this one comes from out of nowhere to be probably my favorite. After the last laugh from the last joke, regret remains, and it's real. I love their snotty humor, but it's stark and refreshing to see them treat tragedy honestly and not bundle it with a punchline.
yea man you said it!
The Big Drag
also comes to mind
I think their new songs for m this and double albums the best since thanks for all the shoes. Writing that book let them write about grittier shit and it's just better than errorism and coaster, not that those are bad, this and double album is just on another level.
This song feels like what I feel about my life looking back. I was on the east coast, and it was the '90s and dope was big. Heroin. It was everywhere and I lost a lot of friends to it. Damned near lost myself to it but got off after 10 long years in '03. This song brings back memories I didn't realize I had. Time goes by too fast :(
Great song. Great video.
me too ❤
Who else is digging this oldschool feel of NOFX?
Too good
Fucking loving it
Literally sounds amazing but they have shouldnt this way for 25 years, production wise 🤷🏼♂️ not a bad album
@@jonnywires11 exactly...I've never heard a bad album from Fatty and the Gang.
Old school NOFX sounds nothing like this. They were pretty shitty for the first several years!
Never been into hard drugs, been just once in LA for holidays but this song touches me a lot and makes me feel quite sad, as when you discover that your party buddy is not always so happy he looks like... I love this song and I love you NOFX!
"Why wasn't anybody scared!? Because we were teenagers on loads so no one really fu*king cared!"
This song is so sad and so real at the same time. Good job guys
but as you grow old people lie and make it not real anymore. they are only brainwashing themselves
Can someone help me with what the reference... door and fours. I may be too young lmao
Reference to a drug. Look for doors and fours signification on google.
Drugs, doradin and codine4
Better off not knowing. The 80s were wild
Dammit, Mike! Releasing this song a day after the death of one of the greatest skatepunk out there, RIP Jeff Grosso! Damn!

slowfx is pretty good too.

i liked their first album, heavy petting zoo, though no one else did...
@Matt Coss It was SlowFX's first album.. try to keep up ;)

These new songs are great but extremely depressing. 2 songs about drug abuse and a song about suicide

Being in isolation will make you think about things like this, fat mike has been around since 83 and NOFX took form in 85 so imagine all these people he lost throughout the years to drug overdose. It catches up to you, yes footage in the video is from the slog but mind you he was around during that time frame or moved there from Boston. Loads were really big there most of them in that movie were probably the taking them.
I love this song and footage even cooler directed by dave markey rip julie and big john and others aswell i was 15 in 83 a proud to say i was part of the so cal punk scene and im still here 😆
I was eleven in 83 iwas just getting started in punk but I'm still here I turned 50 in May an old man now but I Still love the music and the people well most of them.
Did u take doors and fours back then ?
My friends that died were more Punk then me.
Rest In Peace Julie of Sin 34
Being from the UK and the same age as these guys I can draw so many parallels between that scene and ours, we were massively into UK bands like Peter & The Test Tube Babies, GBH, UK Subs, Exploited, Anti Nowhere League etc, but the kids, the partying, the scene were pretty much the same. Total nostalgic tug at my heart for those days.
I always wondered how much the uk punks were aware of what was going on in USA.
Favorite NOFX song I’ve heard in a bit
and i've heard quite a bit
My parents met in the punk scene in 1984 in LA. I was born in 1986 while my mom was strung out and OD’d. My dad still hangs out in the punk scene and has a blue Mohawk! He’s taken me to so many punk shows and told me about the 80s. I love seeing these old pics in this video it makes me wonder if my parents were around there!
This song and video both make me nostalgic and sad for all the friends I've lost to ODs. At almost 50 years of age I now realize that all the kids in our friend group has some form of mental illness or trauma
NOFX Lover please comment
This song gave me those chills at 36 like I was 13 all over again.
Thirty years later, that one black dude in the video - "HEY, THAT'S ME!!!"
If he didn't OD anyways

My God this song is sad as f*ck. But still haunting. Thanks.

So cool seeing all this old as fyck footage, especially after reading hepatitis bathtub. #PUNKFORLIFE

Being a teen in the 90's was the best thing ever .. funny that when you are in there .. you don't realise that periode of your life was so special .. best years of my life
I knew. I cherished it for sure.
I really want a fast 11song punk album with Melvin as a lead singer... 2 years Touring... 5 years being dead... 1 year Réunion thing...
Real Recognize Real check out the Hardcore EP, all covers (I think), all Melvin
I like melvin but songs like 100% more fuckeder and Separation of church and skate are where he shines. I do like 6 Years On Dope but I think Fat Mike has the best punk vocals. The rasp in his voice, the deepness of it really screams "Punk" to me
I love the slow, old school and dreamlike aspect of this NoFx
Its nostalgic
Gimme back my school days...no money, but a lot of passion and fun!!

Don't think so, but pretty sure he was in the video earlier than that
This is pretty fucking brilliant. And I think it's always impressive when bands like NOFX who already have a lot of history can put out such good music.
Little bit of footage from The Slog Movie mixed in there. Hard hitting lyrics. Sounds like you lost a lot of friends. Sucks huh? It's the one thing I dislike about getting older. Good song. It makes you think. 👍🏻 Excellent footage from "back in the day". Lots of pictures, and videos from the archive. Thanks guys. 🙋♂️

Plenty of nostalgia from what it was like to be a punk back in the day, because punks are getting old. We were behaved like morons, who were young, dumb, and took risks. There are some of us have lived to maybe tell about it. I remember things got so crazy at a punk show once that I....
AnonymousBelle562 what happened?
@Lonely Variety
Various things happened, at different shows. I remember at one show they had the bright idea of passing out free condoms. A bunch of us punks started blowing the condoms up like balloons, and throwing them around. It started to distract people within the circle pit, which created an interesting mess. Lots of people tripping, and there were broken condoms everywhere.
All while this was going on, a friend decided to crowd surf during this chaos, and she lost her bellybutton ring somewhere in the process of the chaos. She stayed after the show looking for her lost bellybutton ring. We found condoms used as balloons🎈, a few 👜wallets👛, a hat🧢 , and 2 left 🥾shoes👞, men’s underwear🩲but no bellybutton ring ⭕️ 🤣
