My wife's 2015 Prius has had 3 major accidents involving hitting deers within a timespan of a year, the headlights and bumpers have been replaced everytime. This time I have noticed when they put the car back together that the passenger and driver side headlights are too low and I'm pretty sure they were not calibrated before they released the vehicle back to us, this is the exact video that I needed to learn how to adjust the lights for myself and get it back int specs. I appreciate the time you made by making this video and uploading to UA-cam, it was very informative and straight to the point. ~cheers! 👌

Been a mechanic for 40 years… you teach me something new on most videos… I did not know the right side had to be higher… makes perfect sense… we don’t do head light alignment due to the cost of the machine… but I have done them just the way you do it. Thanks for the video!

Thank you! When I looked under the hood, I thought the adjusters were just that...but I wasn't sure. With your confirmation (about minute 5:00), you gave me the confidence to give it a try. I adjusted them up some to confirm they worked. I still need to work with my wife to get the exact right adjustment but now I can easily do it in less than a minute when we are together at night. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You're amazing! I thought it was really smart to check if it had either automatic light adjustment sensors or manual ones first before you started messing around with it. Great mechanic! :)

This video was very helpful, I have a 2010 pruis that I had to change the bulbs to led and they still were not helping so I ended up installing 55w hid kit and still was not giving light output to the point it should have, this video helped me figure out the actual problem! Thank you so much. It was very nice of you to share and help everyone else out!

Great video. I do projector HID retrofits on vehicles. The headlights on that Prius are D2S HIDs in pretty good quality projectors. You're correct about the right side of the road needing a higher beam of light than the left, but those projectors have built-in 'step-ups' for that purpose. The headlight beams should be even, otherwise you'll have 2 step ups instead of just one. Originally, the passenger light was aimed too low. It should be raised to about where you put it, but the driver side should be raised to match. That way the cutoff line is even, and the step up is even as well. Afterwards, a night time test drive should be done to make sure the light beam stays below the windows of other drivers, unless you have a template 25ft in front of the vehicle

Adjusting the R/H lamp higher will cause the light to beam into the R/H mirror in the front of you or the L/H mirror to your right. Hopefully it won't be a cop and you get written up. Then you will have to go the expensive way. That Prius has a good beam pattern and looks easy enough to adjust. There are so many videos out there how to adjust headlights. With projectors you have a very hot beam and it is allowed because of the distinct cutoff. Old school lamps had a somewhat of a beam and way too much flood. Best beam pattern I ever got from a sealed beam was to use the Hella H4 conversion. It actually had the Textbook Beam pattern that was non existent in any other sealed beam. Worked great on my 55 Chevy truck, 57 Olds Super 88 Tri Power, 70 El Camino, 71 Chevelle, 70 Opel GT, 74 Sportscoach motorhome and 94 Miata. You can get a good education on headlights at Headlight Revolution.
You are going to have to back that car up to get at least 22ft from the headlamp face to the wall. Measure from the floor to the center of the headlight, (Sometimes marked with a dimple). Measure up from the floor at the wall one to two inches lower than the center of the headlight. Make sure tape measurer isn't sitting on a concrete bump at the wall. Adjust the headlights to the one or two inch lower than center mark. On older sealed beams you would adjust to the center of the non-existent hotspot unless you run Hella lamps.
Great news, because that Prius has projectors with a distinct cutoff, you can go to a brighter bulb. Well maybe, My wife's Lexus has special ($$$) Lexus bulbs. There are so many bulbs out there with Junk beam patterns, I suggest consulting Headlight Revolution.
I'm not a big fan of projectors and never off road with them. I feel they need a little flood to escape above the cutoff. Enough to illuminate above the car in front of me to be able to illuminate street signs. I hear newer design headlights are getting DOT approval to do this. Projectors take getting used too and I don't like getting used to anything. LoL
I'm not digging the 6000 and 5000 color temp. I need a little yellow to get contrast.

I recently had my 2008 Prius HID’s converted to LED’s. In 2 months one of the bulbs went out, warranty replaced both headlight bulbs for free. In another month, the OTHER bulb went out. My guy got the idea to use commercial LED’s used on big rigs on my car bc there seemed to be a overwattage problem burning out the bulbs prematurely. Worked like a charm. Problem was I couldn’t see bc beams turned down too low. He fixed it for most part except passenger side can be raised more. Now I have nice bright LEDS on both headlight and fog lights. Better yet, the headlight beams were adjusted (for most part, passenger side bugs me) and my bulbs have not burned out so far. Have you encountered headlight problems with Prius’?

Hi ! My 2008 Yaris has an intermittent problem. Example: I start at home and go to store. Everything is Ok, good idle, good acceleration, no light on dash and no code. When I want to start after 30 minutes, it start but stop after 2 or 3 seconds. Try again, but same result. After 3 or 4 trial, it crank but no start at all. After 45 minutes or 1 hour, it start normally. It is very intermittent. The car as 181,000 km. I suspect the pump relay. My Toyota dealer had never see this !!!
