Great points! Been a confirmed ground-hunter now for twenty years. Do yourself a favor and try this experiment. Take your hunting clothes outside away from the noise of everyday life, and just rub them, rub them together, or against your chair, whatever you might find in your ground hunting setups. Man-made fibers are LOUD!! Don’t care which one(s) you choose. Then compare that noise lever to natural fibers in the same trials. You’ll be amazed at the differences. I only hunt in wool and it’s made all the difference in the world not being detected by slight movements. Love your videos ,keep em coming!
I'm new to hunting and about half nervous to comment because I currently use a crossbow. I have arthritis in my shoulders and climbing is out of the question. I shot a nice doe that came in within 3 yards and ended up about 20 yards when I took the shot. The pack seat has been great. Thank you for the video and may God grant you many years.
Don't be afraid to comment because of a legal weapon you use. A fella that chooses his friends by the weapon they hunt with in my mind is a small fella.
After a climbing stand failed on me and dropped me 15 feet I began hunting only on the ground. I am enjoying your videos and pointers on ground hunting.
Thanks for the tips my ground hunt consists of using a saddle so I can hide behind the tree and use that as cover and have my feet on the ground so with that said I’m also a double amputee below the knee and wear prosthetics also that’s why I hunt that way
Glad to hear you have a method that works for you..awsome idea to keep you doing what we do. Hope you're successful and enjoy nature all that you need to be happy.
Keeping the Good Lord first is some awesome advice and I am very thankful you use your channel to put out great hunting advice and some great life advice God Bless You Brother!!
Just received my pack seat a week ago. As a retired man I’m also enjoying the chair. Hunting in Michigan I do put a little pad on seat to keep some of the cold ground air from coming up. It has worked well.
I started ground hunting exclusively 5 or 6 years ago. Never regretted it. It’s taught me so much as a traditional bow hunter and now don’t understand why gun hunters even need tree stands. The pac seat is great, bought mine from the original owner. Well worth the price.
Great video and great advice, I started bow hunting over 30 years ago . I live in central Texas so a straight tree where you need it is hard to find so I’ve hunted from ground a lot. I learned that I need to practice more in the sitting position because sitting your using your upper body to draw and the legs less. Also having deer at less than 20 yards really multiples target panic if you have it Lol.
Robert, again a great video. I’ve hunted the ground for almost all of my life. I’m 67. Body position ready matters. If you are right handed, set up pointing your left shoulder where you want to be able to shoot. A bunch of big deer taught me that. LOL. Take care of yourself, and keep those swamps dangerous.
Great video brother, great tips. I’ll add something I’ve learned is in keeping with the idea of being quiet when that close is your chair, I don’t currently have a waldrop seat but you’re slowly talking me into one so I had to shop around, try different seats to find one that didn’t squeak or creak. And clear the leaves out around your feet in case you need to slightly shift your feet when they come in. I’m looking forward to learning more brother, it’s a blessing to me and I’m sure others that you are taking us along. Good luck on your camping and hunting trip
Try making your own “ totes style tree seat “ , light weight, small, portable and easy to add a soft cushion. Plenty of videos on UA-cam to show you how to make them. Cost is sub $20 dollars easily and build time might be 15 minutes? Depending on skill with simple tools. God Bless 🙏😇& Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 P.S. “Dean Torges style tree seat “by “Ouachitamac “channel here on UA-cam
Robert, great points. It’s a true discipline to be perfectly still and know when to move. Your observations are gold. Experience and careful observation begets wisdom. Good luck in your journey.
Lessons learned in real time on the ground are ones hopefully not forgotten. Soft clothes rule, as does covering the skin. I gave away my climber and my hang on stands to my son and grandsons years ago, just wasn't worth it any more. And yes, comfort is everything for old bones and muscles. Sure hope that you able to put one on the ground while at the camp, heck, make it several. Love your videos as always.
Oh I can think of A LOT of times over the years when I turned my head because I heard something and met eyes and a white butt bolting away...all I can say is Don't do that! Lol No really it seems big things make little noises and little things seem to make bigger noises. Deer can sneak in close and make you wonder how it even got there without you knowing. Yet a squirrel or chipmunk will get your attention from 75yards under the right situation. Choosing when to draw is also a major thing...takes experience to pick your moment. Also my longbow shoots 180fps but I cannot allow myself to shoot a deer that has me pegged and staring at me because I've done it a couple times and they react so fast it will easily give you a bad hit, even if your shot was spot on at 12yards. Theirs my 2 cents Robert..hope it helps somebody. Thanks for the good points.
Years ago on a quiet, cold, still morning, I tried to position myself for a shot and the deer, from about 13 yards away, actually heard my whiskers rub on my collar for 15' up! Looked straight up at me, never got a shot off after that....
I was putting a stalk on a big doe. Was just about in range, and NY feathers brushed up against my chest. She zeroed in on me instanty, then bolted. One tip I've used is to put scent on the upwind side of a trail. That way, thier attention is on that and you can draw on them. Works well! Good luck Robert!
Thanks for the tips, been hunting with a recurve for the last 2 seasons and I feel this actually helped me a lot. I got 3 yards from a doe and a nice little forky walked up to 11 yards facing me. What a rush. Never did draw on any because there is bigger deer in my spot but I can’t wait for next season! Aim small!
Great video. I'm a new hunter and only hunt from the ground....I don't like heights. I'm definitely guilty of turning my head when I hear a noise. I wonder how many deer I missed because they saw me turning my head but I didn't see them. I bought a seat that swivels which I like. It doesn't squeak or creak and it allows me to position myself to my shooting lane without having to move the whole seat. This is my 3rd year hunting so I'm hoping and praying this is my year.
Hey, I'm the first one to comment ! Thanks for the videos. Good insights. I use a crossbow from the ground, and I like to almost lay down with only my head propped up.
I found the same thing with being too close. Also, I like to hunt tight in the thick stuff. Now I've learned I need it open enough that I can see them coming from a good distance. If they pop in view suddenly, it is extremely difficult to get positioned for the shot. I shot one the other day that was looking at me, and it didn't end well. So, no more of that. This is a much different game than hunting with a compound or crossbow, and I've done it all.
You’re correct comfort is king for us old humans I use a saddle sometimes but I don’t find them particularly comfortable for me so if I’m not traveling a long distance I’ll take a hang on are hunt from the ground if the ground cover is good 👍✌🏻🇺🇸
Great video sir. Planning of picking up one of those pac-seats when I retire and get back to hunting. Seem to make a lot of sense to me and I like your idea of sitting 15 yards off. The recurve I’m shooting seems to like that 12-18 yard range as well so it will be happy. Lol!
Good stuff RC! Do you find the seat squeaks some with movement? Mine seems too. Also easy on the Northern deer pard. People think I can actually hunt up here 😂
From a Bob Lee recurve (I live about 45 minutes from their store/factory) to a self bow, very impressive Mr Robert. Also I am curious because I have heard you mention it several times, did you have a near miss/ accident that made you quit tree hunting? Love your channel brother!
When sitting up with a tree behind you, don’t try to shoot straight away! Elbow will hit tree and you can’t get to full draw! Happened to me on o nice Kansas buck!
Ground hunting is the way to go, whether its sitting still or still-hunting. Been doing it a long time and i love taking the hunt to the critters. Just whacked a fine 8-point at 20 yards with a 10mm pistol. Eager to try out my new McLean Mountain Outdoors Simple Seat.

I agree . I mostly hunt in merino wool if it’s cold. If it’s warm I wear 100% cotton.
@@jessetaylor9758 cotton kill as the expression goes. Just get light weight merino wool it’s much better. Look into that ,you won’t regret it!👍😁💯🎯
@@anthonyforfare7223 I’m a huge fan of the lightweight merino as well, it’s a way better under-layer than cotton.

Mine makes no noise at all right now.
A bunch of good points. You get away with ZERO on the ground. You are in their domain now.
What did you change in your position to make the pac seat more comfortable and no longer need a pad?
I spread my legs when sitting square but sit a little sidesaddle most of the time.
Yeah, that's the ticket, and I find it best to have my knees bent with my feet closer to me, not way out in front.
Thanks, great feedback, I’ll give that a try…

Hunting on the ground is way better!!! But yeah, you dont get away with anything!!! It’s way tougher!
Can you recommend any ground blinds that are good to hunt with a recurve?
I have not used one in a long time. I had a double bull but I don't think they make them anymore.
That is how I will do it this fall. I am also into comfort and I will not climb trees.
Sir when you're just sitting there waiting to hear things not moving and then you hear something how do you not look to make sure it's not a bear
@@treymurphy6398 not many Bears here and it is very hard not to look.
3rd advantage to a tree stand is early visibility and time to shift position

Deer see blue
To fast pulling back and that arrow sound on the shelf/arrow rest.=busted! They’ll 👀right at ya!
Can you shoot with the pack seat on your back, or does it interfear with your draw?
You can shoot with it on your back. It's narrow and inside your shoulders.
Tree stands are dangerous, heavy, and boring. You can hike farther and hunt safer without it.
