The most underrated part of scouting a prospect is coaching. There are tons of QBs that had more potential to be better if they played for better teams with competent coaching Staff. Like Alex Smith for example. Played like a playoff caliber QB once he left SF. Then got his spot taken by Mahomes. Now granted he didn't have the potential to beat Mahomes spot but imagine if he got with Reid from the jump?
Coaching is the single most important factor. A great example is Josh Allen. Dude had potential coming into the league but if he was drafted by the Browns I guarantee the dude would be considered a bust rn. Great coaching and letting your players develop in the same offensive scheme is such an important factor in success in the nfl

It will pan out just like the 2021 class. They're all 1 read or tuck and run. The one QB whose skillset translates best to the pro game is actually BO NIX. BO NIX takes what the defense gives him and uses one play to set up the next in order to set up the big plays which is exactly what a QB needs to do at the pro level. When you look at these QBs like Caleb Williams, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Bryce Young they all play maddenball at the college level dropping bombs on future insurance salesmen in coverage. Then they get to the pro level where you have to throughly set up PLAY ACTION by using your running game, QB run option, counter run plays, Checkdowns, crossing patterns and slant passes, and they all blankly stare down the field like someone who was clocked in the head with a shovel. @brianbelden2449 now I get what you're saying and bo could be the most "pro-ready" qb - but the draft doesn't work that way, you draft off potential. and, as a patriots fan, I'm wary of players with this label of pro readiness at qb because of mac jones. you need great coaching as mac proved, so why not get the qb with more potential
Im so happy someone covered this. He has talent, it doesnt mean he will succeed.
As always his success will depend on the team he lands on. Teams that are always drafting near the top are not the best places to go, but that's mostly how it works. If it's a team that has a good defense with some good playmakers, then he won't be under pressure. At the same time we have the CJ Stroud comparison that will likely come up, with CJ going to what is considered a bad roster but still thriving.

it also depends his ability to hold up to the pressure of an nfl pass rush. I would call that an intangible attribute that no one can see.
Now imagine him behind a Chicago O line in 2024. With Ryan Poles it certainly wont be the 2023 o line, but it also wont be the best in the league.
He's either gonna thrive or crack under that kind of pressure.
In my opinion the greatest QBs make plays, and off balance throws seconds before a 350 pound monster is face to face with them.

People really like to forget that Mahomes not only went in the 10th round, but backed up Alex Smith for 17 weeks. He was put in on his first game to keep their QB1 from getting hurt after clinching the wildcard.

Caleb's height is a mystery but around 6ft ish def not 6'2".
I did the math on the distance of that 51 yard throw Caleb makes from the opposite hash, and the total yards it goes is about 58.6 yards. Super impressive.

@@VaanRavi It's not, the camera makes the field seem wider and shorter than it actually is. Remember, 58.3 yards is 175.8 feet. It's pretty damn far.
I don't think it's very impressive for a college QB much less a NFL one. Justin Herbert completed 10+ passes where the ball travelled 55+ yards in the air. That 10 was only during his first 20 games too

Agree and I saw every game he played at usc and a few at Oklahoma. That’s his competitiveness but it’s misguided competitiveness. It needs to be broken down and re-directed or he’ll get killed in the pros.

What worries me about Williams is not what's on tape, but instead it's what's not on tape. TLDR: he's never played the type of quarterback play that he'll have to play in the NFL, without the hype and narratives he'd be labeled as someone that needs to sit for 1-2 seasons before starting.
He only plays from shotgun and %90 of the time it's "go make something happen" rather than a proper structured play. He never has played under center with 3 and 7 step drop backs, so there's none of those quick timing passes that are used all the time in the NFL (think nearly Tua's entire playbook). He also doesn't go through proper 1-2-3-4-checkdown read progressions, again mostly because he's told to run around to make something happen.
Of the old fashion red flags: he's not good under pressure, at all. Also he's very prone to hero ball. He's not good at reading defenses. 6 foot 1 in college is 6-0 in reality or even 5-11.
Yes, and also he is weak mentally and I don't think he will be respected as a leader. Say what you will about mental health, but do you really think NFL guys gonna respect a guy who goes crying to his momma when he loses? Idk.
What I do know is that he is going to fumble a lot. He has some of the worst ball security I've ever seen. The way he runs is like he is playing flag football.
Imo he's a 2nd or 3rd round pick disguised as a #1 overall due to hype.
Chicago should draft mhj and trade up for Brock powers. There are plenty of QBs in the draft that have great potential. Pick one of them up instead

The throw to Rice early in the video down the left sideline was a 3 step drop then he climbs the pocket and throws. Towards the end of the video he throws a quick slant after a 3 step drop. Yes he does need to learn how to play under center but he does play on time and in structure as well as goes through his progressions. Is it perfect no but hardly anyone is especially coming out of college. Does he leave the pocket yes but he also keeps his eyes downfield looming to make a play. He doesn't bail the pocket to run like many QBs are prone to do. What wasn't included is his release and how quickly he gets rid of the ball which is important on the timing of the passing plays just like that slant

OK, Caleb is not 6'2" people so please report correct info about the guy. He is listed at 6'1" now so until that is examined more at the combine along with other traits like hand size which believe it or not are both considered important traits of successful QB's in the NFL.

An interesting video would be to analyze the negatives of Mahomes, Burrow, etc when they were coming out and see if they learned or improved on those things. I think it's ok for players to have negatives coming out of college, as good coaching (like Andy Reid & Mahomes) can make raw talent into brilliance in the NFL

They hear Mahomes, Rodgers, and even a bit of Allen like in this video they think that's how successful they will be and will win MVPs and 3 super bowls in 7 years. But it's how they play the position and their game is what's similar not the success. The success depends on a lot of factors such as Williams himself, the players around him currently on what team drafts him, and the coaching he receives

He does what Mahomes does but to an extreme. He’ll have to adjust his game big time. He can still do the magician stuff but that extending the play for 20 seconds before finding an open receiver aint gonna cut it in the league. With that being said, I hope whichever team he goes to doesn’t ruin him

NOTHING IS GUARANTEED but for the folks that dont know CALEB WILLIAMS is absolutely it. I have never seen a QB that has all the tools and mind you even MAHOMES did not show his wears until ANDY REID polished him. CALEB WILLIAMS challenged is the fact that USC and LINCOLN RILEY got to pass happy that I rarely saw an audible but LETS BE REAL CALEB WILLIAMS has inate accuracy superb arm strength and the leadership it takes to be the next GREAT ONE. Not to mention he is sneaky quick and fast on those qb runs. If the Bears do get him they better get a legit headcoach.
Caleb won’t even sniff Stroud’s rookie year success and Stroud inherited what was believed to be a bottom 3 supporting cast and ended up setting records. Caleb will not elevate an offense on that level and I’d be my life on it
It comes down to the team if he’s on commanders or pats expect a Bryce young 2.0 season for a least two seasons which may lead to him not getting a second chance commander have a good qb in Sam Howell who does a lot of things Caleb can do and look how that went no point in drafting a qb if he’s going to be on the ground 70% of snaps at pats got a good defense which limits time of possession but commanders are the equivalent of usc in the nfl, whatever qb gets drafted there will be labeled a bust despite whatever skill set they have. But on the bears or maybe falcons or Vikings come up the board draft him then he’d get fair opportunity to prove himself.

With Williams, the so-called "flashes" are brighter and far more numerous/frequent than those of his peers. His good play greatly outweighs any subpar moments. It is well to remember, too, that he won the Heisman as Sophomore, after not playing his senior year in high school due to Covid.
For fans whose only dose of Williams was his frightful night against Notre Dame (a poor First Half, really, and a one-off anomaly in his charmed career), a note of elucidation:
At N.D. Williams had yet to abandon his dubious decision to play only from the pocket (even when none existed) and eschew running opportunistically this season - a preseason move made presumably with an eye toward his NFL future.
Williams' preemptive moratorium on running was disconcerting - if not disappointing - to observant fans, but didn't seem to hurt SC's offense much in the early going (recall, Williams led the nation in almost every QB passing stat and total for much of this season's first half - and this while playing only two and a half quarters per game, as SC and its top-ranked offense racked up a string of routs scoring 53.2 points per contest).
The new No-Run Williams kept rolling right on through the first two quarters at Colorado, when SC held a 20-point lead against its Week-5 foe at intermission. A day at the office, par for the course.
Then, in an instant, the Wheels fell off.
The Buffaloes were the first ones to crack the code - simply dropping 7 or 8 defenders to flood and choke off the secondary, a tactic which becomes feasible when it's known that a QB won't run. As SC's offense stalled for the first time all season, the Trojans' train-wreck of a defense did its thing as Colorado stormed back, forcing Williams - who a week earlier made his first fourth-quarter appearance since last winter's Cotton Bowl - to play the full game. The clock would eventually save the Trojans - who went scoreless in the final period - as SC scraped by to win 48-41.
The Trojans next opponent, Arizona, now had a template - and indeed the Wilcats' "dollar" defense (eight men deep) neutralized SC's air game. It was at this point - six games into the schedule - that Williams finally realized he'd have to become his old self, at least for one game. Though his natural runner's instincts may have atrophied from long disuse, Williams, returning to form, put his team on his back and Found A Way with his legs - his OT rushing touchdown (No. 3 on the day for Williams) capping a comeback win, 43-41, for a still-unbeaten USC. It would stand as the last of Williams' many clutch showings - dating famously back to his prep days - not to be undermined by his team's defense (to be sure, William's' personal record in Crunch Time isn't spotless, but on balance tends markedly towards success).
After the AU game, fans at last got confirmation that Superman indeed had voluntarily been shelving half of his superpowers, as Williams confounded the press with this remark, accompanied by an emabarrassed giggle and knowing glance toward Lincoln Riley: "I don't really like to run." (This from the man whose legs, chiefly, had carried him from high school higlight reels to the top of the Heisman podium.)
SC's next adversary - and the one who would decisively cause Williams to rue his new mindset (and then more or less scrap it, shrewdly, for the season's remainder) - was waiting in South Bend, champing at the bit. (While SC's embattled O-line, coincidentally, awaited its final collapse.)
Whichever team selects Williams (no doubt he's praying it's Not the Bears), it'd behoove them to steer the thoroughbred Talent back toward his natural style - telling him to Take Off when he sees green grass, permitting Superman access to his full complement of powers.

TLDR but I know you mention CW’s minimal development due to his team’s limitations. I think that more than anything aligns him with Mahomes, for better or worse😬. He needs to land with a top level coach to ensure success.

I like him as a prospect, but I have my concerns just like with any prospect (short of Andrew Luck type of talent). I’ve just read some things that concern me regarding him as a teammate. He made a TON of NIL money, and it’s harder to gel with your entire team (or offense) when you’re making millions and some are making squat. He was in a unique situation in that regard so I guess we will have to see how it plays out. Sounds like he needs to go to a team with a decent offensive line.
Trevor Lawrence, the last generational talent was mid AF while bust magnet like Josh Allen and Justin Herbert shocked everyone. Case in point, CJ. These generational talent guys rarely pan out. It’s much better to draft a physical talent and develop him.

Joe Montana was considered small with a mediocre arm and he wasn’t drafted til the 3rd round. But the new coach at the 49ers in 1979 had decision making authority for drafting players, and he knew that these criticisms paled in comparison to other traits he saw in Montana: his instincts, his competitiveness, and his ability to control a game. That new coach, Bill Walsh, already had a reputation as a superb QB position coach and he knew Montana could be developed to acquire the skills needed to succeed and excel in the NFL. Walsh knew a winner when he saw one. Williams has some amazing natural ability. He may not quite have Montana’s legendary competitiveness or ability to control a game, but he’s no slouch in that regard, either. He really wants it bad. I think he’ll succeed.
Yes in the first play he missed seeing a wide open receiver but the fact that he had the presence of mind to throw it away shows maturity.
Here’s my issue with the bears drafting him; any QB that has had moderate success in the NFL is better than any incoming rookie until that rookie has proven otherwise. We’ve seen so many QB’s come into the league and fail. I think it’s a very poor decisions by the bears to pick Williams over Justin, because it is inherently a risk. I think they could immensely benefit by trading off the pick and reaping the rewards of a couple 1st round draft picks. As a Falcons fan I hope they trade him to use though.

I view him as Trevor Lawrence if he gets drafted by the bears or Washington.
The only chance he has to be “The next Patrick Mahomes” is if a good team trades up for him. Even then that team would give up so much to do it, it’ll hurt his chances of success.
You know the Bears' #1 pick is through the Panthers right? They could've easily been 10-7 this season if it wasn't for three historical collapses against the Broncos, Lions, and Browns (two teams of which were in the playoffs).
So that team plus the upcoming draft and free agency should be good enough to at least make the playoffs, even if they do roll with Fields. Even more so with Williams. Not to mention hugely upgrading their offensive staff.

I just think Mahomes benefited from going to a team with a solid roster and good head coach that had winning seasons every year for the past five years before he even got there. If the Bears have failed so far to develop Fields, I don’t have faith that they’ll develop Williams (who’s a spoiled brat and a diva) any better.

I just think you can’t expect any player to be “The next Mahomes.” No one even expected Mahomes to be this good or he wouldn’t have fallen to ten. We’ve seen what Fields can do, and it’s not much. Plus maybe I’m wrong and Williams ends up being amazing. Just bet on the upside and hope for the best.

On that first int vs notre dame, the problem wasn't his choice to throw, he over threw it badly. That would have been a good throw if he didn't just flick it out there to avoid being sacked. He legit could have thrown a competition there. But he like many of his highlight throws are erratic.
This is not at all a shot against FA (who is only referring to others’ opinions) but “generational talent” has to be used 100x less frequently. It’s lost its meeting and most people who were hyped as such are not. Conversely, iirc, Mahomes wasn’t a generational talent until he played in the nfl. Nobody was taking him #1 overall.
Andy Reid's GM and scout team thought Mahomes was the greatest player they'd ever seen. Sean Payton said Mahomes reminded him of Farve. Caleb isn't the first QB to receive big praise before playing in the NFL.
As a Giants fan, we need to pick up a quarterback in this draft. Perhaps not one of the top 2 or 3 prospects, but somebody who along with Devito to put pressure on DJ. Who I fully believe isn’t the quarterback for the franchise and we need to move on from, instead of wasting yet another year. Yet we only have ourselves to blame after giving him the extension last offseason.
Regardless, I don't trust the Bears to develop any QB even if they do take him.

Exactly he has the tools & talent but he still needs to be developed . The problem is the bears don’t do that, bears have to be patient but the fans are going to expect him to come him & win right away especially after getting rid of a qb like Justin fields

A lot of these comments sound like they want the kid to fail. You for sure have to be thorough when evaluating these College QB’s and pointing out their weaknesses/strengths and things they need to work on for the next level, and Caleb for sure has things to work on. I’m a big time caleb guy but I can see your point. He definitely plays w a chip/angry…but I kinda like that as a qb. My qb coach in college was big on being emotional but calm at the same time. Your team feeds off you so when it’s appropriate, you should be able to get hype or intense out there. Kinda like a Brady, or mahomes…I actually like Caleb’s fire but I get your point

Caleb Williams plays too much Hero Ball and he should work on just taking the checkdown at times instead of trying to be Mahomes
What will hold Caleb back is his intangibles. People compare him to mahomes but I see him as more of a Aaron Rodgers. For how many plays he makes and have a 93 TD to 14 INT in 3 years is absurd.

I think you have to sit him his 1st year, otherwise he could pick up too many bad habits. Let him get used to snapping from center, learn to play within structure, learn to do more than what his one-read offense demanded of him. That's granted his character questions pass.
And if I'm the Bears, and I like Williams, I keep Fields as well. No reason to you have to choose unless someone is offering a Wilson or Watson type trade for Fields, and that's not happening.

The one thing I have been wondering is why people haven’t been talking about and concerned with his mental capacity. He seems to be immature from the videos I’ve seen on him, made a list of the only teams he’ll play for and says he wants to be part owner of the team, and acts like a child when things don’t go his way. To me, that isn’t someone I would want being the face of my franchise. And why is everyone saying that the Bears are going to take him? The Bears aren’t on his list of teams he would play for so what if he pulls an Eli Manning? I dont know man…. It seems like to me that there’s things that these “football experts” aren’t saying for some reason. There were many other players before Caleb that had the same mental aptitude that people talked about all the time…
