Wonderful to see you work!! Icon is absolutely amazing! Always sth new to learn from you.. I find the Cretan style more difficult exactly because it requires "less" painting..
Hello Antonis! Your video is very helpful especially when you explain what you do and give tips. I am currently learning the cretan style in Lebanon and I started writing the pantocrator icon! Will be happy to share the final result with you to know your opinion 😊 God bless you Rita

Im learning a lot looking at you working! I love your technique. I would like to know the terms you use for the underpainting... I guess they are greek words but it would be lovely to have them in writing so I won't forget.... Also the one for the first expressive lines in brown. THANKS for sharing
Hello, very few people know about the mummy portraits of Fayum. They are amazing. I have written about five icons in egg tempra. Now I am studing alla prima portrait oil painting. I realize these traditions are interlinked. You are the first artist I have found using all these traditions, so I am interested in following you. Thank you.
Dear Antonis, I would like to thank You very, very much for your splendid videos. They have given me joyful and interesting moments in a time, where my grown up daughter has been battleling treatment of cancer. In 6 weeks time I will be on less "mom-duty", and will start practising Icon-painting seriously. Thank You again, for Your efforts. Gratefull greetings, Liza from Denmark.
Dear Liza.. I want to thank you so much for taking time to share this with me.... So sorry I couldn't reply earlier to you.... I want you to know that comments like yours give a lot of meaning to my life, although I know how hard this period must be for you, your daughter and family.... I pray for the best.... Keep strong, and if these videos help you transfer in the quiet world of painting then I am truly grateful....i am in a mourning period in my life as I recently lost my parents and quite sensitive right now on the issue.... Be strong and keep up your presence here... I'll be happy to learn that your daughter wins the battles one by one!!! Warm, tight hug!!!
@@PaintingtheLight Dear Antonis. A heartfelt thank you for your very warm and supporting answer, so kind of you. I would like to respond to it, but prefer to do it by mail, if that is ok with you, I have found an e-mail adress. If not, all my sympathy concerning your loss, it sounds overwhelming. thankyou for your lesson. I finally completed my first icon, it turned out really well. I am now on my second. Face of Christ. Blessings Br Francis Mary
Thank you as always antonis I learned a lot from this byzantine style technique and as a bonus I’m glad you didn’t put so much speed I love this icon happy new year my friend!!❤️🎊
Thank you so much for sharing you amazing technique! Can you tell me again what did you use with the cotton around the hair and gold? I have such a hard time drawing on the edge of gold.
Another wonderful tutorial! Thank you for sharing! May the New Year 2021 bring you Joy, Love, Abundance, Creativity and above all Health to you and your loved ones my friend!
If it helps, the base coat of the skin is called proplasmos, and usually the first lines are proplasmos with a little black pigment in the avyoksido, witch is the egg and vinegar mixture
Antonios, do you ever paint icons with acrylic? If so, are you able to do a video on that? Does using acrylic require different techniques with the layering/hatching than egg tempera?
Hi Zach, thank you so much for the question.. Have a great 2021. Acrylic is very similar and very different to egg tempera. It can take harsher handling than egg tempera and could be worked more impasto, but egg tempera is 100% smoother and silkier. Thus, the experience of painting with egg tempera is so much greater in my opinion. Plus the level of painting precision that somebody can achieve with egg tempera is unbeatable by acrylics.
Which size could I use for a, let's say, 30x30 cm icon? Something like n. 2 or thinner? That's still an obscure point to me. Thanks a lot, I do appreciate your work AND your wonderful generosity in sharing your talent as a teacher.
Hello Antonynis Thanks for your fault. I know you a lot ... I would like to learn how to polish the icon inarnish. Thanks for your cooperation in advance
Does someone know who the painter of the original is, that he is making a marvelous copy of? I would really like to see more Icons in this more "realistic" style
Thank you for commenting Jeanette. Yes I'm using egg tempera. You can achieve a very similar effect with acrylic but the experience is not the same at all.... Egg tempera is so silky, smooth and precise....!
Hello! nice video, Antonis. Again I have a question, what pigments do you use? they are natural? Where do you get them from? thank you very much, keep it up!

I love your work, and I also have a question. Is it fine not painting the aura?
Andrei thank you so much!! I believe the halo is mandatory for painting icons!

The original icon is at the Hilandari Monastery of Mountain Athos. No name though....
👍👍👍

Are you using egg tempera? Is it possible to approach the icon with Acrylic paint in a similar way?

I use powder pigments found in every art supplier store I guess...
kalepa ta kala ;)
What is that black coating in face first painted
It's the underpainting...
♥️
what happens if i use acrilics instead of egg tempera? i dont want to invest too much
That's fine. Acrylics are similar to egg tempera. But I think they are more expensive than using egg tempera.
