- Jeremy Clarkson has questioned how so little of the money in the food supply chains ends up in farmers’ hands when they are taking most of the risk.
He tackled the issue of fairness in the supply chain during a behind-the-scenes tour of Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire on 24 April.
Select members of the press, including Farmers Weekly, were invited to the farm to celebrate the third series of the hit TV show Clarkson’s Farm, which gets its official launch on 3 May on Amazon Prime.

This show has opened my eyes to real farming, I feel so outraged at the way governments treat you or to be more accurate ignore you.
I wanted to say the exact same thing. I couldn't agree more mate. It's the same here in The Netherlands.
Credit to Charlie Ireland too, proving that a good and knowledgeable Land Agent can help cut through all that bureaucracy and red tape to assist farmers at making a profit.
Hey Charlie, hope you are keeping well!
But he probably isn't cheap (not that he should be, he is very competent and worth every penny), Clarkson can afford it but i doubt small farmers can
Very true. 😂@@Uryendel
Charlie seems like a superhero honestly. I never knew how much expertise it took just to do the administration of a farm, let alone the physical work!
I've been watching Jeremy for probably 20 years, he knows how to make a great show, and Im so glad he's showing the reality of how food is produced.
Even if some might be a bit cynical about the show (although I haven’t met anybody), I’d say Clarkson’s Farm has been a real boost for farming by informing people about how tough it is for farmers around the world, but also how rewarding and vital for us all.
there was a review in the Guardian on the first series, from a lady who clearly hadn't seen it. She detected a "contempt for farming and farmers". The reaction iv'e seen from farmers prove her demonstrably wrong even if one hasn't seen the show.
But i guess they took out the old blueprint for destroying everything with Clarkson in it and switched out a few words.
This is a fantastic show. Entertaining. Humorous. Educational. Wonderful characters. Beautiful photography. Great music. Wilman is a genius.
I find the “reality” of this show to give an insight into what it takes real farmers to make a living out of farming. Bad weather, crop failures, animal mortality, cannot be scripted. 🇨🇦
‘Real’ farmers in Europe are mainly huge agro. The couple of pigs Clarkson has are quite and all. Most pig farms here have an average of 5000 pigs. There are 134 MILLION pigs in Europe (almost twice as many as in the US) 95 million cows.
Clarkson runs a very quite eco farm with different crops, a small farm shop and his friends. But it has nothing to do with the real big business that is European farmers. A group of people that received a TRILLION euro in subsidies in the past 30 years
@@MrJimheeren 'huge agro' is very susceptible to market, corporate and government interests though. The farm shop in Clarkson's farm and other farms avenue coupled with big agro arable is not a bad business model.
Thank you Jeremy Clarkson for helping the poor farmer.
Ah yes, the largest group of millionaires in Europe. The farmer, they surely need help from fellow miljonair Jeremy Clarkson.
@@MrJimheeren what delusional world do you live in, I'd love to swing by.
Have to say i have learnt a lot more about farming after watching this show and hats off to the farmers 👏🏻
Season 3 cemented it's greatness. Clarkson has finally done something very good for the environment.
God bless Clarkson for highlighting the Sisyphean task any farmer faces, day after day, year after year.
Had to google sisyphean...!🤔
One of my favourite Greek myths ;)
I have small herd pedigree Herefords, I sold two at market and got 1100 each, over two years they cost me 1900 to produce. Work that out! No subsidies here as too small.
He’s right on the money at the end. It really is a very nice way to spend your time. I absolutely love the show and I’m so happy to see that Clarkson has a side that none of us ever thought he did have. We have all seen him as petrolhead and an anti environmentalists but boy were we wrong.
When I first heard of the show on Amazon, didn't take it seriously as something to watch. Just thought it was Clarkson showing off about how rich he was that he could afford a farm. The show was interesting and seemingly truthful about the reality of how hard farming is.
Love this show as a farmer its so hard it’s so hard to make any money any more
❤❤❤❤
If you listen carefully, you can actually hear his genius... Sounds like static background noise, but it's his genius.
Binge watched series 3 the other night. Roller coaster of emotions and very informative.
Brilliant show. I know this will be contentious, but I think it is the best thing he has ever done. !
Goats are great, so stable, I really like goats milk, goat's cheese and yogurt. Thank you for featuring this Farmer's Weekly, we love Clarkson and the team.
Have you ever tried milking a goat, they're a lot more difficult than cows.
@@TheByard I haven't but I will take your word for it.
We should eat more goat meat too. I think it’s delicious, especially in a Gurkha curry, but quite hard to come by.
I love this show so much!
He is right though the return to farmers and growers is p.ss money! Supermarkets just have to much control,it’s take this our price or we will go and import it.
Supermarkets are run by traitors
I am looking forward to watch
The Chicago Board Of Trade, now CME Group, was established in 1848, specifically for midwestern grain and oilseed farmers, elevators and merchants in the USA, could hedge their risk with futures contracts which still goes on today. Sadly in the UK, we are not as liquid or developed.
Would be great to see Jeremy take the path of regenerative agriculture.
I guess he is half way there already by not plowing and his drill method. Just haven't seen them do cover crops. In their case, it would increase their operational costs hugely in terms of seed and pesticides. I think the real solution for him is organic, to drastically cut down their operational costs. But it requires far more skill than they possess, and it would likely turn the farming community against them, as conventional farmers appear to hate organic farmers.
@@fermewilmotsagriculturebio3434 but can you imagine what it will do for farming ? NPK farming is dying. They would only need to invite someone like Gabe Brown out and I can tell you, a lot more people will get into farming when they realise what can be possible.
@cedriccbass-jp8ky I take all that with a grain of salt. There are plenty of farmer/prophets making most of their income through consultancy, courses, and appearances instead of farming.
While if you look at studies comparing forms of agriculture you see that as long as you work with cover crops the effects on soil regen are basically the same, the rare studies that also look at Nox emissions even show that no till regen makes your soil emit more NOX through asphyxia. Which is hundreds of times worse for the environment than Carbon.
I don't know enough about that farmer/ consultant in particular, but there are charlatans out there, and also ones that have a more hybrid and less doctrinal approach. The guy they had on this season with the mixed crop probably falls in the idealist category, who sticks too close to a doctrine.
Volume on this is terrible, I could barely hear it.
Turn it up then.
Never retire Jezza, we have lost top gear, well we lost it when the three amigos left, anyway the farm show is brilliant. My better half wouldn’t watch TG, but she loves the farm, keep it up and best of luck with the weather.
theres a lot of people stealing from the farmer and the consumer
Best show on the television.
Is there a full version of this interview?
Its heart warming 😊
Everyone involved with food production makes large profits except the farmer. Why is that. Struggling to think of another business that works in a similar fashion.
The most outrageous part in all that is as the farmer earn less and less from their products, consumers have to pay more and more. In france for exemple farmer earn 30cts/L of milk while at the same time the consumer is paying 1,3€/L
Cost of living is simple a scam, 28 pence and yet we pay £1.50 for bread. Good on you Jeremy.
At the end, what television is he talking about that is so great? I Google the last four but couldnt find anything
i wonder if theres going to be a series 4
Being filmed at the moment
I get the impression that Jezza will keep doing it as long as Amazon are happy with the viewing figures. What he earns in royalties undoubtedly allows him to run his farm like one big experiment.
@@justonecornetto80 I bet its the only show amazon have that bump up their subs. I know I only get an amazon sub for when Clarkson farm comes on, I cant be the only one.
Its seems to me uk gov could streamline so much regulation without even removing any requirments. Contacting 6 agencies for planning permission, you could make that one point of contact. We probably need to talk about the regulations themselves too but we can all agree that how its done is bad.
When I used to travel around farms with my father in the 1960's Clarksons farm is what you used to see, a mixed farm, with some arable, a few cows, pigs, hens, true mixed farms, then we joined the EU and farmers specialised to get the most lucrative subsidies, and relied on them. Farms havve to be diverse to survive.
sitting on bales of straw that are worth a fortune this year watch the markets ...
Geeze spoiler alert in the first line.
Son of a farmer, friend of a farmer, and entire extended family of farmers here. Watching this series and observing the red tape, I was flabbergasted. If that same stunt was pulled in South Africa, your political death would be quick. Tiny rural towns would kill for more vehicle traffic, and our farmers would despise being told that they don't actually own their land (building regulations and so on). NIMBYism is very rare here, and a despicable position to hold in anywhere in the world.
No subsidies (all abolished in the 1990s). Just raw market power keeps our farms going. As much as I love Clarkson's Farm, his small farm is around the bare minimum for a viable operation.
The attention he brings to real farm issues in the UK is absolutely amazing though.
Farming the unfarmed starts with regenerative farming management ❤
Best wishes to you two for putting the truth on the media but I don't think the average shopper will take a blind bit of notice....HEH!! Just look who the vote for for heavens sake.
The whole economic system needs changing. Ive never understood the oincept of growth. More people = more problems. 😮
I think Jeremy and Lisa would be better off running an animal sanctuary or safari park cos they love their animals too much!
if it takes one kilo of wheat to make one loaf of bread, man, one might think why bread is still being made in the first place...
???????
Spoiler Alert! Geez.
Oh no, he loses the competition - ruined it for me!
Season three episode 4 was brutal, worse than black beauty. Harrowing indeed.
LOL this video just spolied the fact jeremy lost lol
But on a percentage of profit over expenses he actually won.
ffs i didnt finish s3 and i find out he lost
Woohoo. Brexit has been sooooo good for farming in the UK. Thank you, Farage & Boris & the Conservatives.
#spoilers
Supermarkets should be made illegal in Britain.
Check out Harry’s farm for another impoverished farmer.
Get a grownup to do your video titles. Implied you had given the farm a 3-star review (poor)
No sympathy for these hobby farmers.
