What if we had the power to SLOW time down?
According to the research of neuroscientist David Eagleman, this isn't just science fiction fantasy. This power is real, and it's found in the difference between "clock time" and "brain time."
"Clock time" exists outside of us. It's constant, and maddeningly indifferent to you.
But "brain time" is shaped by our perceptions. Brain time can fly by, or drag on and on and on.
See, your brain records the events of your life, laying down data on a memory track as you experience things in the moment.
Here's a car crash, a kiss, a raise. These moments pass in an INSTANT, but because they're memorable, your brain captures volumes of footage.
Meanwhile, here's waiting in line, updating your phone, inane chit-chat. Your brain has nothing to do but notice the passage of time, making it draaaggg.
    Not much to capture here.
To understand brain time more deeply, Eagleman ran an experiment, where he dropped his subjects 100 feet... into a net, don't worry... and made them guess how long their falls took. The fall guys all believed they were falling for much longer than they actually were.
What this experiment revealed is that we experience time differently in the moment, from how we experience time retrospectively. And THIS is the secret to slowing time down.
See, when we look back, our memories expand and contract.
The eventful times with a lot of footage, the ones that felt like a blink of an eye in the moment, unfurl and feel longer when we remember them and our brain forms the story.
But the times that felt so long in the moment are then compressed away...the worst of both worlds.
Another one of Eagleman's experiements showed that repetitive patterns cause brain activity to fall, while novelty causes it to spike.
So the core of harnessing brain time is this: if you want to slow time down and make your life last longer, fill your days with as many novel and memorable experiences as you can. Give your brain a reason to pay attention.
The changes don't all have to be big. Learn something new. Take a different route to work. Put down the phone and pick up a deck of cards.
It's possible to look back on a life where you accumulated several lifetimes worth of experiences and memories...just by avoiding the routine and monotony.
If Eagleman's research is true, then variety isn't just the spice of life... it's the secret to making it longer.
    At least, in our heads.

I have used this a lot in Martial Arts and Boxing. Both in training and fighting. Here are a couple of articles on altering your perception of time, the first I wrote over a decade ago and the second is on using peripheral vision/awareness to enhance this, from a different author.
    Time Distortion and Perceptual speed.....
What exactly is time distortion, and how does it relate to perceptual speed? First of all Time Distortion is not really distorting time as the term suggests, but is the ability to "fully" experience time without perceptual gaps.
Perceptual gaps occur when your attention is divided between actually experiencing the moment, and your thoughts (about the moment. Your awareness bounces back and fourth between your thoughts and the actual moment, creating perceptual gaps and making things seem much faster and "unclearer" than they really are!
For example, say your opponent is about to throw a punch at you, you know his fist starts out at point A. and whips out in a blur to point B. (your face?). You may tell yourself "man this guy is fast", or something like that? Or think to yourself "the hand is truly quicker than the eye".
But what actually happened is that your awareness was divided between your thoughts (of trying to follow the continuity of his movement and so fourth) and the actual movement and moment itself! You Saw point A. and maybe A.3 A.6 A.8 and point B of his punch, but A.1 A.2 A.4 A.5 A.7 and A.9 appeared as a blur to you (if at all) because of perceptual gaps in your awareness!
Another example is: Let's suppose you are sparring. Your opponent feints a high jab, lead punch or shoulder fake, you 'think' in your mind, "he's coming with a high jab!" (anticipation/thinking in the future), then as you begin to react or adjust your defenses, he pops you with a low hook kick! Then you think to yourself, oh he didn't come with a jab (as you anticipated) he came low instead! And while you are thinking and realizing this, he is probably hitting you upstairs again! If you would have been in the moment, and totally (externally focused), not listening to your "internal dialogue," but instead completely (experiencing) your surroundings and the "present moment," you would not have gone for that initial fake or feint while trying to anticipate your opponents actions! It is far better to be in the moment and sense or feel what your opponent is doing, rather than anticipating or making an educated guess as to what he will, or is going to do!
So how can we develop and use time distortion? Do you have to become Zen Masters? While that wouldn't hurt, it's not necessary! Here are some exercises you can practice and master with relative ease that will enable you to use time distortion at will! No matter how "fast" your opponent is, his movements will seem to crawl, and you will be able to time everything perfectly! He will find no gaps where you awareness is not present! You will be able to do virtually whatever you want to with your opponent, because you will literally have much more time to do it in. What used to seem like blinding speed to you will now seem slow to you!
And you will also not tend to anticipate and go for feints and fakes and make mistakes, and you will become very aware of all the "gaps" or emptiness in your (opponents awareness) and defenses!
    Exercises.........................
    1. Practice placing your attention on a rapidly moving object without attempting or "trying" to see it or follow the continuity of it's movement. You should feel almost as if you were looking in the opposite direction! You need not "care" if you perceive the object or not.Learn to see things in this way, in this state of relaxed awareness And for the JKD side of this skill! Read page #124 of your Tao of Gung Fu book!
"No mindedness is to employ the "whole mind" as we use the eyes when we "rest" them upon various objects but make (no) special (effort) to take anything in."
    2. Practice quiet meditation, that is tuning in to your senses and what they are continually telling you in the present moment. And tune out to your internal dialogue or "chatter". Continually experience what you can see, feel, hear etc. without verbalizing or mechanically structuring the observations. Get close to the moment, in touch with the present and externally focused! For example when you look at an object, you probably verbalize or think actual words that describe the object "flat, rough, flexible, dry etc.. Instead, try to use your eyes as a sense of touch. Observe and take in the object with out using words/images! Or as Bruce Lee used too practice "the mirroring of the mind "(i.e., allowing perceptions thoughts and emotions to come and go as a mirror "reflects" images or thoughts, but does not cling or stop.) Today, mental exercises and meditation are often preceded by deep progressive relaxation of the muscles and body. As the mind and body tend to mirror each other, how can you have a relaxed, quiet, still and focused mind without letting go of tensions in the body?
Now as for our final question, how does this relate to perceptual speed? Well this is the foundation and basis of perceptual speed! People always tell me the hand is quicker than the eye, or blame their senses for being too slow! When in reality, it is that they are not sufficiently aware of the moment and everything their senses are actually telling them! How far you take this depends on your self discipline and dedication!
    Science And The Martial Arts:
    Deadpan Eyes
    By Christopher Caile
If you have ever faced an opponent who seemed to look past you, eyes fixed, unfocused and slightly narrowed, the experience can be unnerving. Now it turns out that this “look” has a tactical advantage too.
I have always taught my students that when facing an opponent you should never focus (fix your gaze, attention or thoughts) on any specific attack once it is launched. This leaves you more vulnerable to a secondary attack because you then have to shift attention and focus (or worse, your thoughts) to what comes next, and this takes time. Instead I have taught students to focus on the entire opponent, and if an attack comes to keep a general focus (dealing with the attack in peripheral vision and reacting spontaneously) so that you are alert to what might come next (Zen state of mind). This way you are able to pick up secondary attacks sooner, sometimes even before their initiation, since your focus (awareness) is general and always alert.
Recent research has added a new twist. It has been found that when you keep your eyes still, not blinking or moving (as suggested above), the perception of time itself slows. Thus, when you keep your gaze steady and unfocused (on an opponent and any potential attack), not only are you able to pick up secondary movement more quickly, but also these movements will seem to come slower (less condensed in time).
A recent study by Concetta Morrone, John Ross and David Burr reported in Nature Neuroscience found that subjective time is compressed around the onset of the normal rapid, jerky eye movements people perform thousands of times daily. These movements are performed automatically to align subjects of interest (something focused upon) with the center of the eye which can perceive in higher definition (high acuity fovea such as are used in reading or other detailed perceptual activities).
In this study participants compared the time between two sets of two horizontal bars flashed before their eyes, the first set just before and the second set just after a saccade (jerky eye movement). Study participants reported that the time interval between the flashed sets of the two horizontal bars seemed to be equal, when in fact the second flash time was one half of the former. Thus the subjective time was doubled near the saccade onset (the actual gap was 100ms versus 50ms).
This has important potential implications for martial artists. If you allow your eyes to dart around in their natural fast jerky movements trying to focus on an attack (such as the arm or fist of an attacking limb) only to refocus again on a secondary attack, the second attack will seem to come faster. But, if instead you control your eyes to keep an unmoving, non-blinking "unfocused overview" of an opponent, your perception of time and any attack will slow.
This research finding reminded me of the famous essays of the Japanese Zen monk, Takuan Soho, to a master swordsman written three and one half centuries ago. Takuan’s discourses, while not discussing physical aspects of keeping the eyes fixed and unfocused, do discuss a parallel mental state. Relating Zen to the psychology of conflict, Takuan stresses the importance of keeping the mind stabilized (fixed without thought) during conflict. Takuan cautions the swordsman that if your mind becomes occupied with an opponent’s attack (such as a downward sword strike) and if the defender thinks of meeting that attack, his mind will "stop". This will undo the defender and he will be cut down since the mind was stopped (was filled, something which stops the natural flow of spontaneous reaction).
It is in Zen meditation (practice of the mental aspects) that both the fixed, unfocused gaze and the clear mind are practiced. In sitting, most often the student fixes his or her gaze in front, unfocused while keeping (at least trying to keep) the mind clear of thoughts, ideas or images through intent focus on total awareness and perception. This research study may explain yet another reason why Zen meditation can help in self-defense situations.
Hope it provides some insight to some!?! :-)

Well, for me it's different. I'm able to slow motion down anytime when I concentrate/do exactly the opposite. For example, I can see the drops of water in the shower falling down so slow that I can describe their form. If I want to count how many times my mixer turns around, I can slow that down. Even sometimes while being in a conversation, it already happened to me that I see the facial expressions slower and hear the sound normal. But normally I can ignore that and kinda turn my vision back to normal. It definitely comes in handy in Martial Arts, because I'm able to react faster. I once asked a doctor about that and she guessed that it was because my brain seems to be "working faster" and because of my IQ. If someone knows what that exactly is, please tell me.

A waiting room makes us feel time very slow while we are there.
Yet when we think back of when we were in the waiting room, it seems to be fast with almost no memories of it
If your life feels like your now moves slow while when you think back time also seems to be going really fast, then maybe you live a waiting room life.
Bring new things into your life. Try new things out. Dont stay in the waiting room, waiting for good times to come at you.
Yet be prepared, as good times and bad times come at you with same amount as your speed of approaching them.

I have autism and I hated school which was a waste of my life. So time for me was very slow and I couldn't handle it. One problem I had was waiting in line for lunch in the cafeteria because when you're near the back of the line, you're not going to have enough time to eat. That's when a bunch of classmates ignored me when I yelled: "COME ON, HURRY UP!" When going on long distance car rides my parents didn't care how I felt about back roads because they're too slow and are a waste of time when we could have taken the fastest routes that prevent time loss. So the choice my parents made over and over again for back roads could have easily been avoided. They were boring and nothing important was out there for me. I even yelled: "COME ON, HURRY UP!" But in my childhood, I couldn't understand speed limit signs, I do now, so as autistic as I am, I can still drive, so when I drive, I take the freeway. It's faster and easier and doesn't waste time and you can get to your final destination sooner. And most people on the freeway are the ones I pass because they are putsing. As for school, all it did was keeping me sit in one spot for several hours when I could have been at home doing fun things, but I had no choice. So school was actually the worst part of my life. All things that were bad for me took away my time and even slowed my wasted time down. I wish there's a way to speed it up on bad things and slow it down on good things, but we can't. That's just how life is and we have to make due with it, sorry guys.

Sometimes I do a lot of work and look at the clock and see only around 15 mins has passed. I don't have control over this strange almost paranormal phenomenon. It just happens out of nowhere. It also happens during times when I need to get a job done fast but I am sleepy. I give in to temptation to get some sleep but after sleeping for a while and waking up reasonably refreshed; I look at the clock and my jaw drops because only around 10-15 mins had passed.

To slow time down, count every second of every minute and wish that time would speed up as you watch the clock, thinking back to when you couldn't wait for a certain day to arrive or the last minute of work to end. To speed it up, ignore anticipating the clock completely.

I time travel to a parallel reality a few weeks ago. This is not a joke! I had no clue about time travel or how to do it even. This happened instantaneously where I did not even know what happened for a few seconds after until I started seeing complete Randomness happening around me. This led me to Einstein after the fact and quantum entanglement and also quantum physics. I'm not even sure how I got back to my reality but I'm sure it was the same way that led me into a parallel reality is what I'm guessing. I'm pretty sure that it had something to do with the frequency that was happening in my brain. if anyone has any answers it would be greatly appreciated because this has completely boggled my mind ever since. this is also leading me on a journey to figure out exactly what happened and that is why I am here

Einstein is great at explaining scientifically how time travel works but actually making it happen is a different matter entirely. Those who do time travel have not got any clue as to the science behind what is going on. I believe you that you time travelled. It has something to do with the mind and perception. What were you thinking when you did actually time travel? What was your frame of mind? Did you have the timing in your head like a ticking watch?

One point I would like to add is that we are being programmed to feel like time is going by fast. We must think "an hour is an hour, it MUST be long enough". But no, people will just complain and complain all the time😠. Right now a day has 24 hours and people say "If it had 48 hours it would be enough!". And if somehow a day DID start having 48 hours people will immediately say "iT Is sTiLl tOo sHoRT!" like wtf?! How many hours, then, must a day have for it to feel LOONNNGGG???!!! There's never enough money, never enough time, never enough oil, never enough ANYTHING!!! Even if we do have enough and more, people ALWAYS complain! Like, yeah who wouldn't want to have more time but if there's no way to get it then we get what we get and don't throw a fit! If a day only had 12 hours in it, we would WISH that it had 24 hours in it, see what I mean? I've had this mentality and honestly, it makes it seem to me like time goes by slower even if I'm really busy but that's just my opinion and advice so...
