Once you get Mingus, it's very easy to get addicted. Then other jazz greats can start to feel a bit ordinary. This is one of the easiest albums to use as an entry point along with Blues & Roots. I really appreciate your website and your wide ranging musical tastes.
I too had anticipated Mingus differently before I heard him. I had an impression of him as highbrow. But on first hearing it sounded like pedestrian big band oompah. How wrong I was when I listened again some years later.
Great video! I teach elementary music, and I think the 4th and 5th graders could understand and would be interested in a lot of what you're saying. I wish there wasn't that picture with the naked woman behind them though.... the cigar I could explain away lol. Anyway thanks for all the background info on Mingus.
Thanks - and I was puzzled by this! Had to look through the video to see where that was, as I couldn't recall there being any images like that. But of course it's the painting on the wall behind the beboppers. No different than Greek statues I suppose, though I guess not all parents see that the same way. If you like, it's quite easy for me just to blur out part of an image, and then make it available to you as a download. If you're interested, it would only take me about five minutes.

Interesting. I think I need to revisit Mingus too. It's been five years since I binged on his stuff.
Great review and insight, thanks!
Thank you 🙏
