Thanks for doing this! More Mingus (enough Coltrane) More Monk would be nice too.

I was listening to the Mingus Quintet with Max Roach today one of my favorite Mingus records. It has plenty of the ambience atmosphere and room sound you spoke of. An incredible version of Haitian Fight Song with some very soulful playing from George Barrows. I get goose bumps listening to this. I never get goosebumps listening from a flurry of 16th notes.

Thank you so much, I too am a huge Mingus fan, have nearly all, if not all, of his commercial recordings on LP, and some rare ones such as "Music Written for Monterey, 1965" on the East Coasting label. My Atlantic 70s LPs are promos as I was on Atlantic's mailing list then. My early Atlantics are 1970s pressings (e.g., Blues & Roots, 1970, mastered by Chris Bellman) or from Japan I picked up at Tower in the 1980s to complete my collection. Again, so many thanks for all your posts. Can't wait to hear from Bernie, especially as he's not been interviewed recently.

My granduncle Joe Comfort (1917-1988) taught Mingus bass in Watts, California. Ref. Beneath The Underdog by Charles Mingus.

Very sorry to hear of your mom, ALS, and her and your family’s suffering for it, Ken. 😞

Mingus Moves is such a great record! One of my earliest encounters with Mingus. I’ll be on the lookout for this set - Thanks Ken 🍻✨

Onya Ken! Another superb presentation. It is so good to hear you mention how you like to hear the original sound of the original recordings and hear a piece of history. New mastering may be wonderful for the "fiddlers" but with your work, it is ABOUT THE MUSIC. Dig Jazz and cheers from Oz.

Gary Burton recorded " Duke Ellington's Sound of Love " on his "Picture This " album in 1982. He may have done another version I'm not familiar with. That album has never been released on CD in this country. It's a beautiful album.

Great review! I also have the early years Atlantic box released ~20 years ago, though that was CD only. I shudder at the thought of what they'd charge to reissue it on vinyl at today's prices...

Surely Tom Waits borrowed from the Modern Jazz Symposium LP...
